Abstract:
Abstract:
Abstract This article investigates the dynamics of contemporary Romanian, focusing on various linguistic structures typically used on social network sites, through which the specific content and interaction strategies are being deployed in virtual communities. The article is part of a larger project devoted to the study of linguistic impoverishment (affecting both the vocabulary and the grammatical structure of the language), social networks being only one of the areas where these “uglified” linguistic structures come from: the mass-media (both print and broadcast), advertising (outdoor, indoor, television commercials), Internet forums, corporate jargon, etc. The structures under scrutiny are mostly loan translations (i.e. calques) from English, false friends, hybrid constructions and, generally, lexical and grammatical oddities (sometimes even in the source language), which, nevertheless, due to frequent use, have entered the active vocabulary of a large category of speakers and are therefore becoming pervasive in everyday conversation. The proliferation of these ‘mongrel’ structures in common parlance is also the result of their migration, on the principle of communicating vessels, to other areas of interpersonal and public communication, that of advertising in particular. Moreover, their oddity and inappropriateness are now beginning to pass unnoticed, as more and more speakers are treating them as legitimate linguistic forms, which often end up being recorded in dictionaries. Our approach combines theoretical insights with practical solutions and the pragma-linguistic perspective with the translator’s corrective input.

Strangeness of Being. On a Current of Bizarro Fiction in Polish LiteratureIn modern culture bizarro fiction is an individual current of horror fantasy. It is distinguished by intentionally iconoclastic character of its artistic visions. To the axiological glittering of bizarro fiction undoubtedly contributes placing of this phenomenon somewhere between the pop culture it is inspired by typical for the kind usage of props and the fiction schema, independent culture overcoming the cultural and social taboo and avant-garde from whom it takes the idea of artistic experiment. Because creators of this phenomenon often use the technique of artistic excess the viewer cannot be sure if — searching for latent sense — they are not the victim of provocation; on the other hand, scandal and buffoonery may constitute amask which enables touching culturally important problems.

Abstract:

Peat, Nicholas. ""Is this Bizarro World?" : the adaptation of characterisation and intertextuality in German audiovisual translation." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2018. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/126015/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contributes to the scholarly understanding of intertextuality, characterisation and translation theory; building upon earlier analyses of audiovisual translation of genre television (e.g. Bosseaux 2015, Knox and Adamou 2011), my thesis undertakes analyses of interactions between recurring characters in the sixth season of the US television programme, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The first major contribution of this thesis is the construction of a model of textual cues for characterisation specifically for audiovisual media (e.g. film, television), including non- English language media, building on Bosseaux’s (2015), Culpeper’s (2001) and Walker's (2012) models for dubbed television, drama and novels, respectively. The scene-based analysis of these textual cues in the original English, German dubbing and German subtitles allows the viability of my model for characterisation to be assessed with regard to the audiovisual-specific aspects they incorporate; examples include the visual features of a character's milieu (e.g. the furnishings with which characters are seen to surround themselves) or the visual representation of mental processes (e.g. hallucinations to which the viewer is privy), neither of which could be discerned from non-visual scripts or prose narration. The second major contribution of this thesis concerns intertextual references (see e.g. Fairclough 2003, Allen 2011) which, as a form of textual adaptation, are used in the text to create characterisation. As intertextual references are adapted in audiovisual translation (see e.g. Pérez-González 2014), the characterisation provided by those intertextual references is also adapted; these adaptations are the focus of analysis. For the purposes of this analysis, intertextual references are categorised as allusions, quotations, adaptations and co-text (categories chosen to reflect how intertextuality can be removed or introduced via audiovisual translation): these categories serve to help discern how specific forms of intertextuality are adapted in translation. These qualitative, scene-based analyses (Bednarek 2012) explore different ways in which audiovisual translation can adapt characterisation; adaptations via translation are considered in accordance with the specific limitations of dubbing and subtitles, as well as Systemic Functional Grammar (e.g. Halliday 2014) and multimodal codes (e.g. Chaume 2012), to explain salient decisions taken by translators. Through so doing, it is demonstrated that characterisation can be analysed in dubbed and subtitled texts and intertextual references can be analysed in terms of the characterisation they convey, which can be adapted in translation as the intertextuality is adapted. These are the contributions of this thesis to the fields of intertextuality, characterisation and translation.

No entanto, as metáforas, muitas vezes, parecem produzir certa facticidade do uso sexual anal, relacionado à penetração e à passividade.
The "anal subject" is revealed as the scientific epistemologies criticism which assumes that neutrality and universality are attributes embracing both those who produce knowledge as well as what is produced. In this perspective, the asshole has been used, metaphorically, in political and epistemological debates which clames for deconstruction of the heterossexual standards and contributes to production of knowledges involved by the body erotization, and also to the creation of policies that privileges anal pleasure and criticizes the reproduction of "north-south" division in Queer Theories. However, the metaphors often seems to produce certain facticity of sexual anal uses, often related to penetration and passivity. The enactment of prolapses in pornography, almost exclusively performed by actresses, made us wonder if pornography can go beyond the meaning of "sexual pedagogy" and going to be characterized as a field of imaginative power and creation of bodily possibilities that challenge anatomical and physiological truths. We ask also about the fact that anal penetration is commonly the only referent for sexual anal pleasure and, consequently, the basis to think about the sexual relations from the "activity/passivity" binarity. Thereby, we chose as the primary objective to analyze the sexuality and eroticism provisions which are driven by pornographic prolapse at the website prolapseparty.com. The research material was consisted of texts, graphics and videos on this website contents and were debated from a post-structuralist perspective, inspirated by Foucault's theories. We believe that the fantasies in this website contents may be experienced by the creation of elements that encourage imaginations about sexual acts going beyond the screen of the computer and being part of everyday lifes. The sexual uses of the asshole does not involve the penetration or the anal insertion, but the holding capacity of elasticity and excrescence, wich have led us to argue that those images engender "sexual pleasures of surfaces". Another important element to mention is the close relationship between the actresses as a way to denote that the sexual pleasure provided by the displacement of the rectum is different from an act of "violence". Finally, the exhibition of techniques that moves and creates genitals and prolapsed anus abdicates from the body naturally and consequently emphasizes that sexual pleasure is manufactured.

Tomalis, Susan M. "Effects of retrieval instructions on children's retention for bizarre and nonbizarre pictures." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/91073.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a transitional period between preschool and first grade during which children develop from reliance on instructions to self-sufficient, spontaneous retrieval. Past research has revealed that retrieval instructions are vital to preschoolers' retention of paired-associates. Preschool and kindergarten children were presented with a mixed-list of 20 paired-associate pictures to learn. Ten of the 20 pairs depicted 2 nouns as interacting in an uncommon or bizarre (funny) manner with one another whereas the other 10 pictures depicted component nouns as normally (nonfunnily) interacting. Type and timing of instructions to learn the paired-associates were manipulated. Funny-group subjects were provided with encoding instructions highlighting the silliness quality of the pictures. Nonfunny-group subjects were provided with encoding instructions which concentrated on the interactive aspects of the pictures. A control group was told to remember the pictures “really hard.” For the former two instructional groups, half of each group served as a control during test-time. These control groups were told to try really hard to remember the pictures. The experimental halves of these groups were given elaborative retrieval instructions at test-time, dependent upon their r e encoding instructions. Reference to the funny pictures was provided for half the Funny group whereas reference to the normal interaction was given to half the Nonfunny group. This study revealed that elaborative instructions do not enhance memory for paired-associates over non-elaborative or control instructions. These preschoolers did not exhibit retrieval deficiencies though control retrieval instructions may have provided sufficient information to enhance memory. As well, non bizarre (nonfunny) interactive pictures were remembered better than bizarre (funny) interactive pictures.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Passionate about travel, the writers of the Pasoptist era were also tempted to explore the Orient, a sumptuous land full of miracles. In the memorials and travel diaries of Ion Heliade Rădulescu, Dimitrie Bolintineanu, Vasile Alecsandri et. a., the colorful, picturesque and bizarre, of the places visited, the unusual atmosphere of this universe are evoked. Contemplative, the Romanian writers expose in detail the coordinates of the oriental space – a mixture of human entities, of sumptuousness, luxury and misery. All of them still experience the feeling that they have entered a real Babylon. The exotic element is highlighted in geographical, ethnographic, cultural-spiritual descriptions, etc. The journey of the writer-travelers through such lands stimulates not only the initiatory adventure, but also the act of writing.

Full text
Abstract:
The transverse eigenmodes of unstable optical resonators have since their first discovery displayed unusual, even bizarre, eigenvalue and eigenmode properties, into which we are gaining new insights even today, two decades later. Many of these properties arise because the unstable resonator eigenmodes are highly nonpower orthogonal or biorthogonal. As one consequence it becomes possible to inject more energy into an unstable resonator mode that one has in the injecting signal. Unstable resonator modes also experience an excess spontaneous emission or quantum noise at a rate significantly greater than one noise photon per mode. A virtual-source analysis, based on adding up all the edge waves generated inside an unstable system, can help in calculating and understanding the complex mode properties of the unstable resonator.

Abstract:
Abstract Head mounted displays (HMDs) are common hardware in a virtual reality environment. Sensors are commonly installed on the helmet to provide information about where the operator is looking. If the operator rotates the helmet, the virtual scene should rotate correspondingly. If the point of rotation (POR) of the operator’s head differs from the POR used to transform the image, the display may behave in bizarre ways. In “enhanced reality” and similar applications the virtual scene must also accurately correspond to the real world. When the virtual scene must accurately correspond to a real scene, it becomes necessary to accurately match the virtual display to the real world. A method for automatically collecting data to align these scenes is described and demonstrated in this paper. A theoretical basis for the method and experimental data are presented. Results indicate that the underlying assumptions of the theory are reasonable and that the errors in the method are reasonable.
