Abstract:
Contemporary architects highlight past ideas and present new manifestos often perceived as utopian. Bjarke Ingels introduced hedonistic sustainability in response to the demand for environmentally friendly and sustainable living through different perspectives. This paper comprehensively explains the concept of hedonistic sustainability through the designs of Bjarke Ingels, a contemporary architect. Literature from various sources is examined to describe Bjarke Ingels' idea. Hedonistic sustainability combines sustainable ideas, fun, and community. Bjarke Ingels's architectural design is applied through simulation and an ironic approach. Its representation facilitates the exploration of the design objects planned concretely. The idea of playful and communality was raised through the design that accommodates various user activities. Bjarke Ingels's idea is expected to contribute to the knowledge and contemporary architecture design process in Indonesia. © 2020 Nita Dwi Estika, Yudhistira Kusuma, Dewi Retno Prameswari, Iwan Sudradjat

Abstract:
The Mountain Dwellings project, located in the centre of the Ørestad district of southern Copenhagen, was built in 2008 by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). Together with BIG’s other housing projects nearby, namely the VM Houses and the 8 House, the building is a part of the urban development carried out under the ‘Ørestad act’, initiated by the Danish Parliament in the 1990s. This promoted the development of a new contemporary urban quarter of dwelling, studying, and working. With an attempt to reinforce the vibrant urban fabric of the district, various buildings of residential units and public spaces have been built, in addition to the improved green areas and rainwater canals.

Kristensen, Bjarke Stenbæk. "The Nothing to be afraid of : Experiments within lyrical animation." Thesis, Konstfack, Grafisk Design & Illustration, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:konstfack:diva-4743.

Abstract:
Practical Approach In this project I have been exploring how to work intuitively and exploratory with animation, lyrical animation, dynamic paintings – whatever you might call it. Traditional animation is meticulous; it has a strong emphasis on planning the storytelling. This approach derives from the fact that the production of traditional animation is extremely time-‐consuming and thus expensive in either time or money. I started this project with an experience of how modern software and hardware can help you bypass these hurdles, and perhaps enabling a more experimental, improvising approach without necessarily compromising the output quality. I have my starting point in illustration and acrylic painting as a medium, which I, in this project have been implementing in the software After Effects Theoretical Approach I make sense of the world through metaphors. The metaphor allows me to understand something even though I haven’t experienced it myself. An experience, a sensation, can have transparent qualities. It can be superimposed onto the experiences of others; scaled up or down a bit or change the time and the setting. Perhaps it is this, which allows us to have empathy? When I tell a story, I am making a room of my feelings that others can step into and we can share an experience. In this project, I have been trying to find a way to tap into the vapors of my imagination. Through intuition-‐driven animation excises, I try to solidify my vague inklings, hoping to make my mind somewhat permeable to yours.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Forecasting the stock market is well-known to be a very complex and difficult task, and even by many considered to be impossible. The new model, emph{Historical Consistent Neural Networks} (HCNN), has recently been successfully applied for prediction and risk estimation on the energy markets. HCNN is developed by Dr. Hans Georg Zimmermann, Siemens AG, Corporate Technology Dpt., Munich, and implemented in the SENN (Simulation Environment for Neural Network) package, distributed by Siemens. The evalution is made by tests on a large database of historical price data for global indicies, currencies, commodities and interest rates. Tests have been done, using the Linux version of the SENN package, provided by Dr. Zimmermann and his research team. This thesis takes on the task given by Eturn Fonder AB, to develop a sound basis for evaluating and using HCNN, in a fast and easy manner. An important part of our work has been to develop a rapid and improved implementation of HCNN, as an interactive software package. Our approach has been to take advantage of the parallelization capabilities of the graphics card, using the CUDA library together with an intuitive and flexible interface for HCNN built in MATLAB. We can show that the computational power of our CUDA implementation (using a cheap graphics device), compared to SENN, is about 33 times faster. With our new optimized implementation of HCNN, we have been able to test the model on large data sets, consisting of multidimensional financial time series. We present the results with respect to some common statistical measures, evaluates the prediction qualities and performance of HCNN, and give our analysis of how to move forward and do further testing.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Meighen Island, in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, is one of the most important localities for study of the late Neogene Beaufort Formation because of the presence of marine sediments interbedded with terrestrial fossiliferous sands. The stratigraphic succession, fossils from the marine beds, correlation with reconstructions of sea level, and paleomagnetic data from the Bjaere Bay region of the island suggest that the Beaufort Formation on Meighen Island was likely deposited either at 3.2–2.9 Ma or during two intervals at ca. 4.5 Ma and 3.4 Ma. The exposed Beaufort Formation on Meighen Island probably encompasses at least one warm interval and eustatic sea-level highstand of the Pliocene. Fossils of plants and arthropods are abundant in the alluvial sands exposed in the Bjaere Bay region. The lower part of the sequence (Unit A), beneath the muddy marine sequence (Unit B), contains plant taxa that have not been seen above the marine beds. Sediments below the marine beds are dominated more by fossils of trees, whereas the organic debris from above marine beds contains many fossils of plants, insects, and mites characteristic of open treeless sites. Regional tree line probably occurred on Meighen Island during deposition of the upper sediments, which implies a mean July climate at least 9 °C warmer than at present. When the marine sediments were deposited, nearshore water temperatures probably did not fall below 0 °C; hence, the Arctic Ocean probably lacked perennial ice cover. This confirms recent modeling experiments exploring the causes of Arctic amplification of temperature that have found the removal of sea ice to be a key factor in resolving previous proxy-model mismatches.

Abstract:
This chapter talks about Joseph Banks's expedition from Iceland to a part of the Danish kingdom, which was suggested by Daniel Solander or Uno von Troil, a Swedish gentleman antiquarian and scientist. It discusses how popularity of vulcanology has possibly influenced Banks's decision for the expedition. It also mentions Bank's meeting with Johann Gerhard König, a Baltic–German botanist and physician, who botanised extensively in the same island as Bank's expedition. The chapter discusses naturalist-surgeon Bjarni Pálsson and Eggert Ólafsson who made a detailed study of the natural history of Iceland between 1752 and 17572. It describes Bank's visit to the Islay in the Hebridean island where he focused his expedition on antiquaries, culture and geology.

Abstract:
Mooring systems utilised for floating structures typically introduce non-linear load-excursion behaviour. This non-linear compliance and the accompanying amplitude dependent natural frequency, influences the Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) response of the structure. The application of linear compliance VIV modelling and experimental data has been demonstrated to produce significant uncertainties regarding VIV onset and response prediction of catenary moored cylindrical structures (Bjarke et al. 2003; Dijk et al. 2003). The vortex-induced vibration issues associated with catenary moored cylindrical structures were investigated through non-linearly compliant elastically mounted rigid cylinder experiments. In particular, third order polynomial, hard spring stiffness, (typical of catenary moorings) was considered. The effect on transverse VIV lock-in and vibration amplitudes was examined using a single degree of freedom experimental rig. The experimental rig consisted of a moderately damped, elastically mounted rigid cylinder, restricted in all but the cross-flow direction through use of linear slide mechanism. The linear and cubic compliance components were independently varied over the non-linear compliance ratio of 0 to 0.3. All experimentation was conducted within the stable sub-critical Reynolds number range. The experimental data was compared to numerical results produced by the VIV modelling software package VisFlo. The program utilises a vortex-in-cell discrete vortex numerical method that was modified to allow the inclusion of varying degrees of structural non-linearity.
