Dragonflies often engage in aggressive interactions over access to mates, food, or other resources. We should expect species to have behavioral adaptations for minimizing such interactions with other species because they are not competing with them for mates and often require different resources. We conducted observational trials in natural water pools that pro¬vide new evidence for one such adaptation in the Neotropical dragonfly, Micrathyria atra: males in this species have shorter interactions with individuals of other species than with conspecifics.

The decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, may have been the seminal civil rights event of the twentieth century. It led to the dismantling of the systems of laws that kept blacks shackled as closely to slavery as possible. But the expectations of the lawyers and civil rights leaders that equality would follow such a decision were dashed because they had underestimated both the depth of American racism and the enormity of the remaining task of getting all of America's black agricultural workers into the mainstream economy. The defeat of the Dyer anti-lynching bill in 1922 was a turning point in relations between black Americans and the Republican Party. Little is understood, however, about the role played in the debates by President Warren Harding. This article contends that Harding's conflicted views on presidential leadership caused him to badly mishandle the bill. The President's inability to choose between a restrained and consensual “Whig” approach and a more active “stewardship” role on a wide range of issues resulted in an erratic and ultimately unsustainable style of leadership. In the past, Durham's TV scriptwriting desires had been dashed while he legally sparred with NBC.
