Abstract:

Abstract:
Bandsaw blades are one of the most commonly used tools of the wood cutting industry. Their base materials are mostly unalloyed or poorly Cr-alloyed tool steels. After the review of the bandsaw blade’s cyclic load characteristics, we present the typical failures, which can be, originate in it’s cracking. With the use of these information an overall systematization has been set up by the bandsaw blade cracking types and its root causes. The main place of the failure is the weld and the heat-affected zone’s area where the welding can failure or the lack of toughness can produce cracking. An other zone, where cracking may appear is the bandsaw blade’s tooth gullet because it raises the stress intensity factor. Special material testing methods have been made to investigate the tooth gullet’s notch sensitivity from the test results that a comparison of several bandsaw blade base material, are reviewed. With the use of the results a notch sensitivity rating system has been worked out, which can be used to rate different bandsaw blade base material’s notch sensitivity.

Abstract:
Sawing concrete with diamond saw blade is a complex process with alternating loading. However, due to the poor working conditions of the thin circular blade made of high manganese steel core, and the lack of research on its failure mechanism, a large number of used blade are abandoned every year in China and all over the world without steel core reused. Therefore, exploring the failure mechanism of diamond saw blade can improve the cutting quality and efficiency, and extend the service life of the saw blade. In this paper, the failure mechanism of diamond saw blade sawing concrete was analyzed through segment wear experiment and microstructure observation of segments and steel core of failed sawblade. The results showed that the stress concentration exited at the bottom of slot, where it became the most dangerous section. The crack at the bottom of the cooling hole caused the saw blade to deviate violently and bear unevenly. The microstructure is great different along the outer to the center of the steel core. The closer to the teeth of the saw blade, the more obvious the microstructure change, while the central core still retains the original structure. Under the same sawing area of 0.01m2, the stable dust adhesion of plain concrete is less than that of the steel fiber concrete. However, when the dust adhesion increases to more than the stable adhesion, the phenomenon of blockage will occur. Therefore, deflection, crack, wear and burn were the main failure reasons of diamond saw blade when sawing concrete.

Abstract:
An aerodynamic and structural integrated design optimization method of composite wind turbine blade based on multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) is presented. The optimization aims to reduce the mass of blade under some constraints, including the power and deflection at the rated wind speed, and the strength and deflection under ultimate case. The design variables include parameters both in aerodynamic and structural disciplines. In order to keep the shape of blade smooth, the chord and twist distributions are controlled by the Bezier function in the optimization process. 3D parameterization of blade was carried out in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software. Considering tip-loss and hub-loss, aerodynamic analysis was performed by using Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory. Finite Element Method (FEM) was used in structural analysis. Multi-island Genetic Algorithm (MIGA) which has excellent exploration abilities was used to optimize wind turbine blade. RBF meta-model was construct to approximate the accurate structural analysis model by Optimal Latin Hypercube DOE sample points. An example was given to verify the method in this paper. The result shows that the optimization method has good optimization efficiency and the RBF meta-model could reduce the computational cost a lot.

Abstract:
The majority of research tends to focus on the effects of violent video games, and as a result the motivations to play games are understudied. This study used the uses and gratifications theory as a framework for investigating game player’s motivation to play video games for the purpose of catharsis. This study also proposed that in-game variables, such as level of difficulty and content of the video game, all be investigated to see the effects they have on the achievement of catharsis or the development of aggression through other mediating variables such as enjoyment, control, and frustration with the game. It was found that difficulty of the game predicted frustration with the game and that those with more game playing experience reported greater feelings of catharsis, enjoyment, and feelings of control. None of the independent variables were found to attribute to feelings of aggression, including game content. Feelings of control within the game were found to be predicted by game type. Although there were relatively few main effects with the independent variables, correlations show trends in the data between variables that would support the achievement of catharsis through greater feelings of control, enjoyment, and decreased frustration.

Rupakula, Venkata Panduranga Praveen. "Determination of heat (mass) transfer from blockages with round and elongated holes in a wide rectangular channel." Texas A&M University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/4977.

Full text
Abstract:
Mass transfer experiments were conducted to study the thermal performance characteristics of blockages with round and elongated holes, positioned in a 12:1 rectangular channel. Naphthalene sublimation technique was adopted to conduct experiments with four different blockage configurations, flow rates corresponding to Reynolds numbers (based on channel hydraulic diameter) of 7,000 and 17,000, and at three blockage locations. The hole area to channel area ratio for all four blockage configurations was the same at 0.196. The hole width was half the channel height, and the distance between consecutive blockages was twice the channel height. Average heat transfer, local heat (mass) transfer and overall pressure drop results were obtained. The thermal performance for a particular blockage configuration was measured in terms of the heat transfer enhancement and the friction factor ratio. Heat transfer enhancement was measured as a ratio of average Nusselt number on the blockage surface to the Nusselt number for a thermally fully developed turbulent flow in a smooth channel. Results indicate that this ratio ranged between 3.6 and 12.4, while the friction factor ratio varied between 500-1700. The blockage configuration with round holes was found to yield best thermal performance, while the configuration with largest hole elongation was nearly equal in thermal performance. In order to compare different blockage configurations, an average value of upstream and downstream side thermal performances was used. A general downward trend in Nusselt number ratio with elongation of holes was observed on the upstream side and a reverse trend was observed on the downstream side. An upward trend in the Nusselt number ratio with blockage hole elongation on the downstream side of a blockage was primarily due to jet reversal from the downstream blockage and its impingement on the downstream surface of the upstream blockage. Local experiments were performed to compare against the results from average experiments and also to gain insights into the flow behaviour. There was good agreement between the results from local and average mass transfer experiments. The average variation in Nusselt number ratio between local and average mass transfer experiments was about 5.06%.

Quade, Carol Chang. "Who won the blame game? An audiovisual framing analysis of attributions of responsibility in the network coverage of the 1995-1996 federal government shutdowns." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/280218.

Full text
Abstract:
Television news plays an increasingly important role in the interpretation of political events for most Americans, particularly when negative outcomes demand responsibility. The aim of this study was to assess if the major networks attributed more blame to the Republican Congress than to the President in their broadcast coverage of the 1995-1996 federal government shutdowns, to examine the news framing of this event, and to examine the characteristics of the audiovisual messages. Findings suggest that the Republican Congress was blamed more for the shutdowns and received more negative audio and visual attributions than the President. Findings suggest that while the networks presented the shutdowns through more strategy than issue frames, a human-interest frame was identified as a dominant theme throughout the coverage. Results did not support the hypothesized relationship between frames and visual images. Theoretical, methodological and applied implications for political media and suggestions for future research are advanced.

Bennett, Jeffrey. "The Effect of Mass and Web Spacing on the Loads and Structural Response of Increasing Wind Turbine Blade Size." Thesis, KTH, Kraft- och värmeteknologi, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-103434.

Abstract:
The research presented considers the effect of varying shear web spacing and mass for two blades; a61.5m 5MW blade (based on the NREL5MW reference turbine) and a 100m 13.2MW blade (based onthe SNL100 blade). The variations are analyzed using HAWC2 aeroelastic simulations and Abaqus/CAE finite element simulations;and the effect of the variations is measured by comparing natural frequencies, loads, tip deflection, equivalent fatigue loads, material strength and buckling. Additionally, a tool was developed to facilitatethe modeling of blade variations. Varying the web spacing showed that the web placement is able to reduce loads, tip deflection, and equivalentfatigue loads. Mass variations demonstrated that reducing the mass will decrease edge-wise loadingand equivalent fatigue loads. The increase in blade size has shown that edge-wise fatigue loads becomelarger than the flap-wise fatigue loads for the larger blade.

The objective was study structural and morphologic characteristics and evaluate factors related the grazing efficiency in five Pennisetum sp. genotypes (IRI-381, Venezuela, HV-241, Elephant B and Hexaploid) during the dry period of the year. Genotypes were managed under rotational stocking (44 days of resting period and four days of grazing period). The experimental design was complete randomized blocks in split plot (genotypes represented the plots; grazing cycles, the subplots) and four replications. Six replications were used for total, green and dry pre-grazing leaf blade mass. The others variables (green leaf blade accumulation and grazing efficiency) were analyzed using a complete randomizedblocks design with four repetitions. There was variation in the structural and morphologic characteristics of the Pennisetum sp. genotypes. The IRI-381 and Elephant B presented high density of green leaf blade, low percentage of dead material and high density of remaining basal tillers and new aerial tillers, with averages of 5.0 kg DM/ha/cm, 33%, 22 and 146 tillers/m2, respectively. The same genotypes presented greater total and green pre-grazing leaf blade mass, and green leaf blade accumulation and grazing efficiency, with averages of 1374 and 737 kg DM/ha, 654 kg DM/ha/44 days and 80% of the green leaf blade accumulation, respectively. The HV-241 presented high participation of died material in its aerial biomass (55.6%) due to the high tiller mortality (19 and 114 basal and aerial dead tillers/m2, respectively). This genotype stillpresented high grazing efficiency (100% of the green leaf blade accumulation), however low green leaf blade accumulation (155 kg of MS/ha/44 days). Lesser grazing efficiencies were observed in the Hexaploid and Venezuela (59 and 36% of the green leaf blade accumulation, respectively), possibly due to the high losses by grazing (30 and 31% of the pre-grazing total leaf blade mass, respectively). The alterations in the structural and morphologic characteristics of the Pennisetum sp. genotypes suggest that the animal stoking will have to be adjusted to each grazing cycle aiming at the maintenance of forage stand and the quality of the animal diet. The genotypes IRI-381 and Elephant B presented potential to be used under rotational stocking in dry period of the year.

Galadari, Sara Abdullatif. "Framing Race and Blame in the Media: a Case Study on the Chapel Hill Shooting." PDXScholar, 2018. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4251.

Abstract:
This research examines how racism is hidden and denied by the press, and how blame is attributed to individuals in crime news stories. This research heavily relies of van Dijk's (2015) six discursive strategies to reveal how racism is hidden and denied in the press: positive self-presentation, denial and counter-attack, moral blackmail, subtle denials, mitigation, and defense and offense. Specifically, the Chapel Hill shooting is used as an example of a crime news story for my case study. This study will use framing as the primary method, and critical discourse analysis will be used to guide my interpretations of the frames. Frames are defined by Entman (1993) as texts that select "some aspects of a perceived reality and make them more salient" in such a way as to promote a particular problem definition, causal interpretation, moral evaluation, and/or treatment recommendation for the item described. I will examine words and phrases used when referring to the perpetrator and the victims in the crime story, and examine manifest frames. I begin by explicating terms that my research is founded upon: ideology, critical discourse analysis, race and racism, blame, and framing. Newspaper articles are collected and analyzed for van Dijk's six discursive strategies. The difference between national and regional news coverage is also examined. My findings suggest there are two gaps in van Dijk's six discursive strategies. I propose the addition of two discursive strategies that the press use to deny racism: negative self-presentation and contradiction.

Abstract:
Statistics show that the number of mass shootings and involved fatalities have drastically increased over the last five years. The framing of these attacks in the mass media has a substantial impact on the public opinion on the causes of shootings, possible prevention methods and gun control in general. Following study aims to uncover potential ideological influences of political tendencies of liberal and conservative newspapers on the media coverage of the most recent mass shooting in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. A qualitative content analysis with a general structural analysis of 39 articles from the liberal newspaper The New York Times and the conservative newspaper The Washington Times and a more detailed Critical Discourse Analysis of the frames of blame, prevention methods and gun control were conducted. Findings show that The Washington Times´media coverage on blame attributions and prevention methods mainly included frames of mental health. The focus in The New York Times´ coverage is clearly on gun issues and the demand for gun restrictions. The topic gun control is positively framed by The New York Times. The Washington Times, however, framed gun control in connection with conspiracy theories and thus portrayed it in a more negative light. The findings prove an influence of the newspapers´ political tendencies and ideologies on the media coverage of the Florida mass shooting.

Such studies are of great importance because it represents the starting point for understanding the responses of these plants, as well as its adaptive mechanisms, the management of pasture and semiarid environment. The objective of this study was evaluate the structural characteristics and animal performance on pasture deferred formed by grass aforementioned under nitrogen fertilization (0, 80 and 100 kg / ha) and managed under intermittent grazing in semiarid Agreste of Pernambuco. The grazing cycle was 42 days, with 14 days of grazing and 28 days of rest. The animals used in the experiment were sheep with average live weight of 25 kg. The experimental design was randomized block with split plots. In the pre-grazing, the capim-de-raiz presented had higher total forage density (102.30 kg DM/cm/ha) than the sabi grass (73.86 kg DM/cm/ha). For total forage mass and leaf blades mass, the sabi grass had lower forage and leaf blades mass (4257.67 and 1572.00 kg DM/ha) than the pangola grass (6185.48 and 2371.57 kg DM/ha) and capim-de-raiz (6153.92 and 2181.50 kg DM/ha). Regarding the effect of N levels on the structural characteristics of the pre-grazing, it was found that nitrogen fertilization of 80 kg/ha/year resulted in a smaller pasture height, greater total forage and leaf blades mass, as well as higher total forage density. In the post-grazing, forage density was higher for the pangola grass (97.89 kg DM/cm/ha), while the level of 160 kg N/ha/year provided less forage density when compared to the absence of nitrogen fertilization. As for animal performance, the pangola grass provided greater weight gain per animal and per hectare, with averages of 0.19 kg LW/animal/day and 8.3 kg LW/ha/day, respectively. The pangola grass showed better structural characteristics under grazing and provided greater animal performance when compared to capim-corrente and capim-de-raiz. Nitrogen fertilization with 80 kg/ha/year provided favorable structural characteristics in grasses.

Abstract:
碩士<br>長庚大學<br>化工與材料工程研究所<br>95<br>Abstract The pressure drop and mass transfer in a rotating packed bed equipped with blade packings were investigated with the effect of blade. As to pressure drop, the gas flow rate appeared to be a more important factor than the liquid flow rate due to less liquid holdup under centrifugal field. Also, the number of blade provided an insignificant effect on the pressure. Increasing the rotor speed, liquid flow rate and gas flow rate enhanced the overall volumetric gas-side mass transfer coefficient (KGa). The dependence of KGa on the number of blade decreased with the rotor speed but increased with the gas flow rate. During the soluble VOCs absorption, the number of blade provided the larger effect at lower liquid flow rates. However, this behavior was not found in the insoluble VOCs absorption, indicating that the number of blade provided the lager effect at higher liquid flow rate. A correlation for KGa in a rotating packed bed equipped with blade packings considering the effect of blade was obtained from the nonlinear regression of the experiment data.

Full text
Abstract:
In terms of efficiency improvement many methods for reducing the blade tip-leakage mass flow rate have been proposed. Some of these methods are based on increasing the flow resistance with aid of geometrical modifications of the blade tip (squealers, winglets, shrouded blades, etc.) whereas other methods take advantage of aerodynamical resistance with passive tip-injection as an example. The objective of this paper is a combination of both methods in order to achieve higher reduction in tip-leakage mass flow rate. In the first part of this work necessary characteristic parameters of modern low pressure turbine blades in aircraft gas turbines are estimated. These parameters are taken into consideration to calculate the range of physical quantities influencing tip-leakage flow. Subsequently a two dimensional flow model is obtained with the so called discharge coefficient as the ratio of the actual tip gap mass flow rate to its highest possible value. The investigations are based on dimensionless calculations. In the end the results obtained from dimensionless 2D CFD-simulations are presented and compared with the analytical results. This leads to conclusions regarding the impact of various parameters on the effectiveness of the passive tip-injection.

Abstract:
Blade shrouding gives an opportunity to increase the HPT (high pressure turbine) first stage efficiency by 2–3 %. However, if high gas temperature and high circumferential velocity are at the stage, shrouding can be problematic due to load increasing at blade/disk attachment and high temperature of the shroud itself. To make blade/disk attachment more reliable the shroud axial width has to be decreased by increasing a relative pitch of airfoil cascades t (t = t / b, where t – pitch, b – chord) at the blade tip span. According to experience for a flow with β1 = 50 – 85°, M2 = 0.8 – 1, and Re = (0.8 – 1)•106 high efficient cascades with t = 0.93 – 1.05 can be designed. Application of such a profiling for GTE (gas turbine engine) turbine is demonstrated here. In the turbine meridian flow path the blade was drastically tapered to the tip (tip width was 53 % of the mean width and 46 % of the hub width). To lighten the blade a partial shrouding can be also applied. Model turbine tests showed that local cuts at the front shroud area and the aft shroud area at the airfoil pressure side influenced the efficiency weakly. Required shroud temperature is provided with a cooling. The aircraft turbine with a governed cooling system and a radial clearance control is an example here. In this case the shroud had 3 labyrinth ribs. The shrouding decreased radial clearance by 0.8 mm at main design modes that increased efficiency by ∼ 1.5 %. To cool down the shroud the air downstream the compressor was fed into the cavity behind the front labyrinth rib. At maximal mode with full cooling the relative coolant mass flow (to the compressor mass flow) was mc = 1.3 % and gas leakages through the labyrinth were 0.2 %. It gave acceptable mixed temperature of 530°C in the cavity over the shroud. At cruise high altitude mode and a lower gas temperature and partial cooling with mc = 0.4 % and gas leakages of 0.1 % the mixed temperature also did not exceed 530°C over the shroud. The assessment with taking into account changes of the clearance, the coolant mass flow, and gas leakages showed that the shrouding provided the engine economy improvement by 0.7 – 0.9 % for both modes. For GTPU (gas turbine power unit) the first blade shrouding can be more complicated. However, even the slight turbine efficiency increase provides considerable profits due to GTPU huge power output and long term running. So, when GTE and GTPU designing starts, it is reasonable to consider the turbine first blade shrouding. Here the integral evaluation criterion, which includes the assessment of a possible income from the unit full life cycle running, has to be applied.

Abstract:
The degradation of gas turbine parts due to aging leads to changes in airfoil shape and often causes performance loss. Although the degradation mechanisms and their effects on performance are understood in general (e.g. it is well known that fouling of compressor airfoils reduces mass flow and efficiency), the first quantitative relationships between specific types of part degradation and performance characteristics have only recently been published. In this paper the degradation of turbine blades with aft-loaded airfoils is considered. The typical deviations of shape were identified based on field experience. The effects of these deviations on turbine performance were assessed using different calculation methods, including 3D Navier-Stokes calculations and methods based on empirical correlations. The effect of blades-length reduction, chord-length reduction, changes in trailing-edge thickness and shape, and variation of stagger angle were analysed. The analysis showed that for aft-loaded airfoils without shrouds, the major influence on turbine performance is the degradation of radial clearances. A simplified engineering procedure allowing estimation of turbine performance loss due to degradation has been developed. This paper demonstrates how this simplified procedure, can be applied to the estimation of turbine recovery potential during a typical engine overhaul.

Full text
Abstract:
The steam turbine stage efficiency is significantly affected by clearance losses due to leakage flow re-entering the main flowpath. The impact, in terms of delta of efficiency Δη, is usually assessed by assuming the proportionality Δη = K × (mLeak/mMain), being mLeak/mMain the fraction of the leakage flow relative to the main mass flow rate and K the constant evaluated by experimental and numerical evidence. Several studies are present in the literature concerning low aspect ratio blades, where this constant K is found to be equal to 1, or even higher for very low percentage leakage massflow. The main purpose of the current work consists of assessing this factor in the case of steam turbine reaction blades of the HP sector, characterized by a high aspect ratio. A numerical analysis has been set up where the detailed 3D geometry of two HP stages has been modeled and simulated by a 3D-CFD approach. Then a sensitivity analysis has been carried out by varying the leakage flows coming from stator and rotor labyrinth seals, realized by changing the radial gap of the clearance. This analysis has been repeated for several working points in order to obtain the leakage impact in the whole operating range of the reaction stages. The K factor comes out to be close to 0.8 at design point, whilst it increases up to 1 for highly loaded off-design condition.

Full text
Abstract:
A novel reduced order modeling methodology to capture blade-to-blade variability in damping in blisks is presented. This new approach generalizes the concept of component mode mis-tuning (CMM) which was developed to capture stiffness and mass mistuning (and did not include variability in damping amongst the blades). This work focuses on modeling large variability in damping. Such variability is significant in many applications, and particularly important for modeling damping coatings. The damping in each of the blades is assumed to be structural at the blade level. However, variability in the damping coefficients of the blades means that the damping is not structural at the system (entire blisk) level. Similar to the CMM based studies, structural damping is used to capture the damping effects due to the mechanical energy dissipation caused by internal friction within the blade material. The steady state harmonic responses of the blades are obtained using the novel reduced order modeling methodology, and are validated by comparison with simulation results obtained using a full order model in ANSYS. The effects of damping mistuning are studied statistically through Monte-Carlo simulations. For this purpose, the blisk model is subjected to multiple travelling wave excitations. The uncertainty in the various mechanisms responsible for dissipation of energy and the uncontrollability of these dissipation mechanisms makes it difficult to assign a reliable value for the loss factor of each blade. Hence large variations (up to ±80%) in the structural damping coefficients of the blades are simulated.
