Abstract:
Beech bark disease of American beech (Fagus grandifolia) is caused by the interaction of an introduced scale insect (Cryptococcus fagisuga) and the native fungus Nectria galligena, or N. coccinea var. faginata, which is thought to be introduced. Infestations of the insect precede development of the disease, and N. galligena is often found before N. coccinea var. faginata. Previously published records indicate that the beech scale extends as far west as eastern Ohio (2) and southern Ontario (Sajan, personal communication). The scale is now well established in several locations in both the Upper Peninsula (UP) and Lower Peninsula (LP) of Michigan. The scale insect has been found in beech stands throughout three counties (Oceana, Mason, and Muskegon) along the Lake Michigan shore in the LP, extending for at least 100 km from north to south, and occurring up to about 80 km inland. In the eastern UP, beech scale has been found in four counties (Alger, Chippewa, Luce, and Schoolcraft). The heaviest beech scale infestations are distributed around Ludington State Park in the west central LP and the Bass Lake Forest Campground in the eastern UP. The extent of the insect infestation suggests that it has been present in Michigan for many years, with anecdotal accounts placing the first observations of beech scale at Ludington State Park around 1990. These infection centers are distant from previously known beech scale infestations and are located in heavily used recreation areas, suggesting that the insect may have been transported by human activity. Perithecia of N. coccinea var. faginata were found in Ludington State Park in the LP at N 44° 1.951', W 86° 29.956' and perithecia of N. galligena were found at the Bass Lake site in the UP, at N 46° 27.748', W 85° 42.478'. The identity of the fungi collected from each location was confirmed by measurements of perithecium and ascospore morphology (1). Perithecia at both sites were scarce and difficult to find. Surveys planned for the summer and fall of 2001 will further delimit the occurrence and distribution of the pathogens involved in the disease in Michigan. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the beech scale and beech bark disease in Michigan, with N. galligena and N. coccinea var. faginata identified as the pathogens. References: (1) H. V. T. Abstract:
Four species of stag beetles in the genus Sclerostomus Burmeister from southern South America (composing the subgenera Chileistomus Weinreich and Sclerostomulus Weinreich) are redescribed: S. cucullatus (Blanchard), S. nitidus Benesh, S. tuberculatus (Solier), and S. varasi Nagel. A key to the southern South American genera of Lucanidae and species of Sclerostomus are provided to facilitate identification. The classification of the genus within the Lucanidae is discussed. Nomenclatural problems within Sclerostomus are resolved, and the generic concept is fixed through a lectotype designation for the type species, S. costatus [Westwood]. Lectotypes are also designated for S. cucullatus (Blanchard) and S. tuberculatus (Solier). A neotype is designated for S. varasi, a validly described but heretofore misidentified species. Abstract:
</p><p align="center"><strong><em>Sun drying of coriander: effect of pretreatments and process on physical-chemical aspects</em></strong></p><p><strong>ABSTRACT: </strong>The aim of this study were evaluate the sun drying process of coriander leaves, blanchied and unblanched, and assess the effect of pretreatments on physico-chemical aspects of dehydrated material. Abstract:
The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) may support the densest populations of elk in North America, and a diverse community of large carnivores that prey on elk. From 1984 to 1996, the Jackson elk herd doubled in size exceeding its winter population objective of 11,000 elk by nearly 7,000 animals (Smith and Anderson 1998). In and adjacent to Grand Teton National Park (GTNP), mortality of neonatal elk averaged 15% annually during 1990-1992 (Smith and Anderson 1996). Predation by black bears and coyotes, when calves were less than 4 weeks of age, caused 68% of neonatal mortality. Calves killed by mountain lions were more than 4 months old. Except for hunting, predation was the largest source of mortality of radiocollared elk from birth through adulthood. After 1992, grizzly bear activity on federal cattle grazing allotments in eastern GTNP and the adjacent Spread Creek drainage of the Bridger-Teton National Forest (the East Study Area or East SA) markedly increased as did cattle losses to bears. Personnel of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department attributed 26 cattle losses (25 calves, 1 cow) in the East SA in 1993 to grizzly bear predation (Wyoming Game and Fish Department 1995). The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission, which compensates cattle producers for losses due to grizzly predation, initiated a study in 1994 to quantify the proportion of cattle losses in the East SA due to grizzly predation. One grizzly bear documented killing cattle each year, was captured and euthanized in GTNP in 1996. Grizzly bears are opportunistic omnivores that consume both plant and animal foods (Blanchard et al. 1992). Grizzly bear predation on elk calves less than 4 weeks of age was the primary cause of mortality of calves and a major factor regulating the size of Yellowstone National Park's northern elk herd (Singer et al. 1997). Smith and Anderson (1996) found no evidence of grizzly predation on Jackson elk during 1990-1992. However, mid-summer calf:cow ratios of elk in the Spread Creek area of eastern GTNP declined after 1993. We initiated this study in 1997 to compare causes of elk calf mortality in the grizzly-occupied East SA and the relatively grizzly-free area of GTNP west of the Snake River (West SA). The objectives were to: determine: 1) if grizzly bears were preying on elk calves, 2) whether such mortality was compensatory or additive to other sources of mortality, 3) if changes in neonatal mortality altered the harvestable surplus of elk from the Jackson elk herd for hunters, and 4) any influence of environmental factors, and physiological status on survival of elk neonates.

Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this capstone project is to tell a place-based story about an often forgotten part of campus: the Wash. Beginning as a likely Tongvan campsite, the Wash, after donation to Pomona College as “Blanchard Park” underwent a series of land-use changes. Originally, a designated green space, its present-day composition includes athletic fields, the organic farm and the historic remnant oak grove. Throughout time the value of the Wash changed with its differing caretakers and inhabitants. To bring attention to this evolving landscape and to inform more sustainable and equitable land use in the future, our project aims to acknowledge past narratives about this place, take stock of its present ecological significance and recommend best practices going forward. We accomplished this by putting together a history of the Wash using indigenous knowledge, archival information, biological surveys and GIS.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Knowledge sharing in today’s distributed organizations is a challenge. Hierarchical structures may not support the fast flow of information or the efficient co-creation of knowledge from specialized and tacit individual knowledge bases (see Grant, 1996; Miles et al., 2000; Adler, 2001). There is therefore a need to devise new patterns for leveraging dispersed knowledge within organizations and across organizational borders. In the following we explore internal company weblogs as a potential new channel for sharing knowledge and expertise. Knowledge is deeply embedded in social interaction. Recent advances in ICT have led to the production of social software, the primary purpose of which is knowledge sharing (Teigland & Wasko, 2005). One example of this is the emergence of weblogs (or blogs), personal Web pages that incorporate regular posts in reverse chronological order about a particular topic, current events or personal thoughts and expression (Blanchard, 2004; Herring et al., 2004; Wagner & Bolloju, 2005). Our focus is on internal knowledge blogs. A small proportion of blogs could be classified as knowledge blogs, implying the online equivalent of professional journals in which authors share new knowledge in their professional domains: they report on their research progress, share references and make observations (Wagner & Bolloju, 2005). However, the application of blogs in knowledge management is a new phenomenon, and firms have been slow to do so. Current research fails to promote understanding of the applicability of blogs in networked teams and organizations, and of their role in the social processes of knowledge sharing and creation. Thus we contribute to the emerging literature by exploring the critical factors involved in applying internal company blogs. Most studies have addressed only the rational part of mediated communication, that is, the characteristics of communication technologies and their capacity for managing and transferring information. Our aim in this article is to include the social perspective, and to provide a categorization that combines the rational-social and individual-organizational dimensions. We then report on a mini-case study in order to illustrate the identified factors. We argue that anyone wishing to exploit the potential of knowledge sharing through internal blogs should understand their nature and characteristics in order to be able to make the best possible media choices.
