Abstract:
Newcomers have little knowledge of the behavioral tendencies of their future supervisors before they join the company; thus, they enter the organization with a “blank slate” regarding their assessments of their supervisors. We know little about how newcomers’ blank slates about their supervisors are gradually filled with mental images—or schemas—of their supervisors and how these schemas influence their adjustment to the organization. Thus, the primary purpose of this study is to examine how newcomers’ schemas of supervisors develop, shape their information seeking from supervisors, and influence their adjustment. Further, previous socialization research has not distinguished between different forms of supportive supervisor behaviors or focused on unique outcomes of newcomers’ personal experience and indirect observation of supervisors’ behaviors. The findings of this study suggest that supervisors’ individualized consideration and intellectual stimulation, both forms of supervisors’ supportive behaviors, have distinct effects on newcomers’ warmth and competence schemas of supervisors; newcomers’ personal experience and indirect observation of supervisors’ behaviors have a unique influence on newcomers’ schemas of supervisors; and warmth and competence schemas of supervisors influence newcomers’ social and task-related information seeking to different extents. The primary contribution of the study lies in explaining how newcomers’ blank slate about their supervisors is filled with warmth and competence schemas of supervisors and how these schemas influence their information seeking and adjustment during socialization.

Abstract:
This paper aims to analyze the square beyond an architectural element in the city, but weaves this blank slate, with its contemporary socio political atmosphere as a new paradigm. As a result, this research investigates the historical, social and political concept of Meydan – a term which has mostly applied for the Iranian and Islamic public squares. This interpretation, suggested the idea of Meydan as the core of the projects in the city, which historically exposed in formalization of power relations and religious ideologies. In this sense, studying the spatial transformation of Iranian public squares introduces the framework, which is adaptable to contemporary urban context.

Abstract:
Learner-centered coaching and feedback are relevant to various educational contexts. Spaced retrieval enhances long-term knowledge retention. We examined the efficacy of Blank Slate, a novel spaced retrieval software application, to promote learning and prevent forgetting, while gathering and analyzing data in the background about learners’ performance. A total of 93 students from 6 universities in the United States were assigned randomly to control, sequential or algorithm conditions. Participants watched a video on the Republic of Georgia before taking a 60 multiple-choice-question assessment. Sequential (non-spaced retrieval) and algorithm (spaced retrieval) groups had access to Blank Slate and 60 digital cards. The algorithm group reviewed subsets of cards daily based on previous individual performance. The sequential group reviewed all 60 cards daily. All 93 participants were re-assessed 4 weeks later. Sequential and algorithm groups were significantly different from the control group but not from each other with regard to after and delta scores. Blank Slate prevented anticipated forgetting; authentic learning improvement and retention happened instead, with spaced retrieval incurring one-third of the time investment experienced by non-spaced retrieval. Embedded analytics allowed for real-time monitoring of learning progress that could form the basis of helpful feedback to learners for self-directed learning and educators for coaching.

Lystar, Kimberley J. "Two female perspectives on the slave family as described in Harriet Jacobs' "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" and Mattie Griffith's "Autobiography of a Female Slave"." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/9987.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis will explore an issue in the history of American slavery: the importance of the slave family to individual female slaves. The slave families examined in this thesis do not consist exclusively of blood relations. They also include groups of individuals who came together and depended on and loved one another as much as blood relations. These bonds of affection also constituted family. In the main part of the thesis two sources will be examined in great detail: Harriet Jacobs' Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, published in 1861; and Mattie Griffith's Autobiography of a Female Slave, published in 1856. The main issue to be discussed is how these two women described the interaction of members of slave families. Jacobs was a fugitive slave living in the North when she wrote her slave narrative, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl in the 1850s. Griffith, on the other hand, was a white women who wrote a slave novel entitled Autobiography of a Female Slave in 1856. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

The purpose of this thesis was to design and evaluate The ContexTable, a context-aware system built into a kitchen table. After establishing the current status of the field of context-aware systems and the hurdles and problems being faced, a functioning prototype system was designed and built. The prototype makes it possible to explore established, untested theory and novel solutions to problems faced in the field.

Abstract:
This microhistory of an African slave in eighteenth-century New France offers a unique series of angles with which we can examine the motivations, struggles and consequences of slavery in Canada. Mathieu Léveillé worked as a plantation slave in Martinique before arriving in Quebec to serve as the colony's executioner. The story of his importation demonstrates how the buying and selling of these persons reinforced the social and economic connections between Canada's elites and the rest of the Atlantic World. Though often imported as objects of luxury, the slaves themselves generally lived lives of social isolation, marred by their image as odd, foreign and deviant. Léveillé's enslaved status therefore made him the ideal candidate to fill the socially maligned position of the bourreau. Léveillé's Atlantic experience of itinerancy and exchange furthermore offers a glimpse onto the modes of interaction among the various marginalized groups participating in that system. While the population of Canadian slaves under the French regime paled in comparison to that of the more southerly colonies, the value of this study derives from exploring the uniqueness of the institution in this understudied context.

Abstract:
In this paper, Kait Spong examines alternative practices of mothering that are strategic nature, heavily analyzing Patricia Hill Collins’ concepts of “othermothering” and “preservative love” as applied to Toni Morrison’s 1987 novel, Beloved and Harriet Jacob’s 1861 slave narrative, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Using literary analysis as a vehicle, Spong then applies these West African notions of motherhood to a modern context by evaluating contemporary social movements such as Black Lives Matter where black mothers have played a prominent role in making public statements against systemic issues such as police brutality, heightened surveillance, and the prison industrial complex.

Abstract:
In July of 2003, a feasibility assessment and preliminary planning process began for creation of a new engineering program at Arizona State University’s Polytechnic campus. The process began with a blank slate and gave the founding faculty team, composed of civil, electrical, industrial and mechanical engineers, unprecedented freedom and flexibility in the design. The team adapted an engineering design process to develop the program’s curricular structure and content. A novel, flexible curriculum addressing the needs of engineering graduates in the modern, global workplace resulted. In this paper, we describe briefly the design process, the resulting curriculum structure, and, in more depth, the program’s mechanical systems concentration.

Abstract:
A review of the developed plasmachemical technologies of pyrolysis, hydrogenation, thermochemical treatment for combustion, gasification, radiation-plasma, and complex conversion of solid fuels, including uranium-containing slate coal, and cracking of hydrocarbon gases, is presented. The use of these technologies for obtaining target products (hydrogen, carbon black, hydrocarbon gases, synthetic gas, and valuable components of the coal mineral mass) meet the modern experimental and economic requirements to the power sector, metallurgy and chemical industry. Plasma coal conversion technologies are characterized by a small time of reagents retention in the reactor and a high rate of the original substances conversion to the target products without catalysts. Thermochemical treatment of fuel for combustion is performed in a plasma fuel system, representing a reaction chamber with a plasmatron, while other plasma fuel conversion technologies are performed in a combined plasmachemical reactor of 100 kW nominal power, in which the area of heat release from the electric arc is combined with the area of chemical reactions.
