Abstract:

A pesar de la investigación más reciente sobre la obra de Blasco Ibáñez, algunas de las deficiencias de su novela titulada Los cuatro jinetes del Apocalipsis nunca se han señalado. La falta de motivación psicológica en las escenas de guerra, la interpretación errónea de la historia alemana, y la dicotomía blanco-negro en su interpretación de los alemanes frente a los franceses son cosas que pueden, de hecho, ser llamados los defectos de la novela. El extraordinario éxito de este trabajo en los Estados Unidos se debe a su gran atractivo emocional para el lector, debido al hecho de que el espíritu anti-alemán en el que la novela fue compuesta apeló al estado de ánimo anti-alemán reinante en los Estados Unidos después de la Guerra . Y, sin embargo, la antipatía de Blasco Ibáñez hacia los alemanes no puede tomarse demasiado en serio, ya que no hay otra cara de este autor, que admiraba la misma gente que eligió para atacar. In spite of the more recent research on Blasco Ibáñez's work, some of the shortcomings of his novel entitled The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse have never been pointed out. The lack of any psychological motivation in the war scenes, the erroneous interpretation of German history, and the black-white dichotomy in his portrayal of the Germans versus the French are things that can, indeed, be called the shortcomings of the novel. The extraordinary success of this work in America was due to its great emotional appeal to the reader, owing to the fact that the anti-German spirit in which the novel was composed appealed to the anti-German mood reigning in the United States after the War. And yet, Blasco Ibáñez's antipathy towards the Germans cannot be taken too seriously, since there there is another side of this author which admired the very same people he chose to attack.

Abstract:

El presente estudio pretende mostrar el interés que puede ofrecer el análisis de una parte de la producción novelesca romántica, repudiada por Blasco Ibáñez: sus primeras novelas históricas. Variantes distintas de dicho género, las tres obras analizadas presentan, aun tímidamente, algunos rasgos que caracterizarán la escritura posterior del autor. Además resultan especialmente significativas en la obra literaria del autor, en tanto reflejan el sostenido interés del mismo por esta especie narrativa. Precisamente con ella inició y concluyó Blasco Ibáñez su producción novelesca.

Los escritores Carmen de Burgos y Vicente Blasco Ibáñez compartieron amistad, ideales y una admiración por el mundo Antiguo que quedó plasmada en su vida y en sus obras. Como tratará de mostrar este artículo, su fascinación por la Antigüedad condujo a ambos a alabar la alegría y la belleza pagana frente al fanatismo y la intransigencia cristiana. L os relatos de sus respectivos viajes a Italia dieron buena muestra de ello, aunque también lo hicieron algunas de sus obras literarias. En el caso de Blasco Ibáñez, destaca, además, su deseo de rodearse de una decoración ambientada en la Antigüedad en la casa que se hizo construir en la Malvarrosa (Valencia), donde podía contemplar el mar desde una terraza con pinturas de estilo griego y pompeyano. El artículo analiza las fotografías que la Fundación Vicente Blasco Ibáñez conserva de este espacio y donde ha sido posible identificar, en el techo, una copia del cuadro del centro de la pared sur del triclinio de la Casa de los Vetios que representa el suplicio de Dirce.

En torno al Centenario de la Revolución de Mayo (1910), Vicente Blasco Ibáñez y Ramón del Valle-Inclán visitaron Argentina. Durante sus estadías en Buenos Aires, los escritores fueron agasajados por el grupo de la revista Nosotros, el cual les brindó banquetes en su honor. En el marco de los estudios de sociabilidad y de los intercambios intelectuales transatlánticos, el presente artículo examina los eventos brindados a Valle-Inclán y Blasco Ibáñez, teniendo en cuenta sus funciones de cohesión y visibilización. También se detiene en sus rituales específicos, en un momento de la historia cultural argentina en el cual emergieron y se consolidaron diferentes prácticas de sociabilidad literaria donde primó el contacto directo entre pares.

En mayo de 1909, tras varias tentativas anteriores, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez viajó a América con un objetivo claro: aumentar la venta de sus obras literarias en el continente. Aunque visitó varios países, Argentina fue la elegida para emprender un proyecto personal que culminaría con la obra Argentina y sus grandezas. El momento no podía ser más propicio: el país se encontraba inmerso en los preparativos de la celebración del primer centenario de su independencia. Consciente de la importancia que tenía este viaje, Blasco Ibáñez –que era una figura conocida en el país– inició unos meses antes una serie de contactos con personajes destacados de la colectividad española y de la cultura y política argentina, todo lo cual se analiza en el presente trabajo.

Abstract:

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, a novel about the Great War, was written in 1916 by the Spanish author Vicente Blasco Ibáñez. Ibáñez was a liberal intellectual and opponent to German militarism and the House of Austria, which had been intolerant and retrograde during its rule of Spain in the seventeenth century. This study explores the imperialist, militarist and cultural tensions of the war through Ibáñez’s novel. The formation of blocks of alliances and the capture of rich territories, according to Lenin, translated into the juxtaposition of the German Reich—represented historically by old Germania and the current German Empire fighting for European supremacy—with the Latinity of Ancient Rome and the contemporary French Republic. This cultural and ideological struggle is reflected in the novel’s characters and dialogue. Ibáñez suggests that the 1914 confrontation arose from the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. In the novel, the conflict is typified in two opposing novelistic characters, a German and a Frenchman, who immigrate to Argentina to escape war and poverty. Both return to their countries of origin rich and related to each other, having married the daughters of a rich landlord, Madariaga, although his sons have become cousins and nephews and they face each other from opposite sides of the battlefield. World War I is an irresistible force the magnitude of which draws together all the characters, Ibáñez was absorbed in narrating the first year of the war, when France suffered bitter defeats, and writing about this ongoing event led to his success in the USA, where he maintained the appreciation of the public by quickly creating a film version of the novel.

To Darío VillanuevaIn this essay I take a closer look at the international dimension of the arrière-garde. I will deal exclusively with the issue of whether being arrière-garde may play a significant role in the international canonization of a writer. My case study is based on Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (1867–1928), a Spanish writer with a world – that is to say, an international – literary career who nevertheless has been excluded from the Spanish national canon precisely because of being ‘arrière-gardiste’. Blasco Ibáñez's world literary career and his exclusion from the national canon are assessed from a generational viewpoint. Because of the limitations inherent to the generation method, though, I will also explore a prosopographical approach by investigating a field shared by a collective biography of writers. Notwithstanding the provisional nature of the data, the approach may contribute to a better understanding of both the arrière-garde as an international phenomenon and world literary careers.

Este artículo se centra en la evolución intelectual de Blasco Ibáñez en la última década del siglo XIX, en torno a la evolución de su ideario religioso –del niño creyente hacia el agnosticismo y anticlericalismo–, y la evolución de su ideario político –hacia el antimonarquismo y el republicanismo federal. A través de la vía del periodismo aprendemos que para Blasco Ibáñez el periodismo sería un instrumento que existe para conseguir metas políticas, con una prosa alejada de la imagen objetiva de la realidad, pero comprometida y desde la plataforma crítica de la opinión, y siempre desde los andamiajes de la libertad de imprenta. España, ya en el albor del siglo XX, responderá con pesimismo a los problemas del presente y el porvenir de su patria. La incultura, el hambre, la economía española, el peso del clericalismo y el fanatismo, la educación, serán temas de suma importancia en sus escritos. No obstante, en ese futuro aciago se pueden atisbar visos de esperanza en el proletariado urbano, en un futuro republicano y progresista.

Tanto Vicente Blasco Ibáñez como Pío Baroja fueron ampliamente publicados en los Estados Unidos y disfrutaron de una relación profesional y personal con sus editores. Sin embargo, el modo en el que ambos afrontaron su entrada en el país les diferenció completamente: Blasco aceptó la modernidad de un mercado mucho más avanzado e incluso aportó ideas para promocionar su obra, mientras que Baroja fue más reaccionario y le costó adaptarse a ese nuevo modo de relacionarse con el público lector. A través de la correspondencia con sus editores vamos a comprobar cómo ambos se manejaron en este nuevo contexto.

Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, fundador de uno de los movimientos republicanos más importantes de la España del primer tercio del siglo XX, fue elevado en vida a la categoría de héroe y símbolo del republicanismo. El gran novelista, periodista y político, utilizó ese carisma para lanzar un feroz ataque contra la monarquía de Alfonso XIII y contra la Dictadura de Primo de Rivera a partir de 1923. Hasta que se internacionalizó la Ley de Propiedad Intelectual, ya entrado el siglo XX, era común la existencia de conflictos entre escritores y editores pertenecientes a diferentes países. El caso de Estados Unidos era especialmente notorio por las diferencias legales que existían entre ellos y los países europeos. La mayor parte de las veces, el comercio de libro extranjero era reducido, por lo que no había demasiadas complicaciones reales, pero con Vicente Blasco Ibáñez fue diferente al ser uno de los más vendidos del país. Tuvo por ese motivo grandes problemas para hacer valer sus derechos entre traductores y editores en el inicio de su carrera americana por desconocer la ley de propiedad intelectual americana. Se añade como anexo una lista exhaustiva de sus obras publicadas en los Estados Unidos.

Justo un siglo después de que Julián Juderías publicase su texto ganador del premio convocado por la revista La Ilustración Europea y Americana en el año 1913 sobre la imagen de España en el extranjero, el prolífico filósofo español Iván Vélez ha publicado su obra Sobre la Leyenda Negra, donde no solo profundiza en la temática abordada por el propio Juderías, Emilia Pardo Bazán o Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, en cuyas obras se acuñó el término “leyenda negra”. Vélez va más allá: además de hacer arqueología del término, pretende mostrar cómo la leyenda negra está más viva que nunca, esta vez bajo formas mucho más sutiles que enarbolan los modernos enemigos de la nación española y de la comunidad hispánica de naciones en la que se encuentra integrada.

Abstract:

Nowadays, one hundred years after the greatest sea and trench battles, a question is posed: how could this Great European War change not only the continental configurations, but also the concepts of war and war literature? Until the nineteenth century, many saw war as some heroic act through which men could prove their bravery in an open fight, facing the enemy directly. By means of new weapon technology, death comes invisibly: gas, submarines, long-range artilleries, mines, airplanes, tanks, and machine guns. War strategies are altered and the feeling of a worthy fight in order to defend one’s homeland is ended. In this article, the great disillusion with war will be exemplified in the following romances: Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet in the Western Front (1929); concerning land warfare, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez’s The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1916), as well as Reinhard Göring’s Expressionist drama Seeschlacht (1917).Primeira Guerra Mundial sobre a Europa e a Literatura de Guerra em Períodos de Grandes DificuldadesHoje, cem anos depois das maiores batalhas navais e de trincheiras, cabe a pergunta: como esta Grande Guerra Europeia mudou não somente as configurações do continente, mas também os conceitos de guerra e de literatura de guerra? Até o século XIX, a guerra era vista por muitos como um ato heroico, pelo qual os homens podiam comprovar a sua valentia numa luta aberta, encarando diretamente o inimigo. Com a nova tecnologia de armas, a morte vem de forma invisível: gás, submarinos, artilharias de longo alcance, minas, aviões, tanques e metralhadoras. Muda-se a estratégia bélica e finda o sentimento de uma luta nobre para defender a pátria. Neste artigo, a grande desilusão com a guerra será exemplificada através dos romances Nada de novo no front (1929) de Erich Maria Remarque, Os quatro cavaleiros do Apocalipse (1916) de Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, abarcando a guerra terrestre, assim como o drama expressionista Batalha naval (1917) de Reinhard Göring.

Although the Generation of ’98 writers represents a group of renown Spanish novelists, philosophers, essayists and poets active during the 1898 Spanish-American war, no previous studies have attempted to analyze the diverse linguistic and stylistic features employed by such writers. This study aims to use computational stylometry to detect hidden stylistic and linguistic patterns employed by three Generation of ’98 writers, namely Pío Baroja, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez and Miguel de Unamuno. We employ a large corpus comprising 1,702,243 words representing nineteen works by the three writers. Several rigorous criteria were satisfied in designing the corpora such as authorship, genre, topic and register. Concordance, wordclouds, consensus trees, multidimensional and cluster analyses were performed to reveal the different stylistic and linguistic patterns used by the three writers. Although we focus solely on the use of the word “árabe”, we show that computational stylometry techniques can be used to help detect hidden stylistic and linguistic patterns employed by different writers. This result is significant since it can help the reader navigate across various possibilities of expressions and terminologies employed by different writers.

Amb aquest article es pretén generar un espai de reflexió sobre les limitacions i els reptes presents en la implicació de la ciutadania en els processos de planificació i transformació urbana a través de l’estudi de cas del barri del Cabanyal a València. Després de divuit anys amenaçat per la prolongació de l’avinguda Blasco Ibáñez, el nou govern local va promoure un procés participatiu durant l’últim trimestre del 2015 per a la redacció d’una Estratègia de Desenvolupament Urbà Sostenible i Integrat (EDUSI) per al barri, amb l’objectiu d’obtenir fons europeus per a regenerar la zona. Un conflicte urbà tan estès en el temps i amb tanta complexitat de capes i discursos com el del Cabanyal permet analitzar la participació social des d’un marc conflictualista que és difícil obviar. A través de la implicació en aquest procés d’investigació de l’acció participativa, s’ha aprofundit en la transformació del conflicte, en les potencialitats d’un enfocament holístic i dialèctic, així com en les limitacions imposades, entre altres, per un marc administratiu molt rígid.

Abstract:

Abstract. The energy simulation is a key tool when designing renovation actions on buildings. In the framework of the InterregMed SHERPA project, bound to trigger and manage energy renovations in public buildings, the digital analysis of an educational building affected by the municipal heritage protection has been carried out. The building is the CIPFP Blasco Ibáñez, catalogued as a monument of local interest in Valencia (Spain) city planning, where the heritage value of its facades (main and interior), roof and internal spatial structure is identified.The methodology used consists in performing an energy audit of the building in order to be able to customize a digital energy model. By means of an hourly dynamic energy simulation tool, the current status of the building and its systems can be determined, and energy renovation actions can be outlined. The use of digital analysis tools is of utmost interest in buildings declared as municipal heritage sites since enables the study to be performed in a non-intrusive manner. Several points of energy improvement are identified. There are some actions that can be performed without affecting parameters protected by the heritage status, and some others which need to be modified in order to be compliant with it. Furthermore, the digital analysis through energy simulation tools also allows to perform detailed calculations about the energy, environmental and economic savings associated with the measures. The assessment has proved the need to promote research and testing of new solutions and technologies to improve the energy efficiency of heritage buildings.
