Designers are used to applying a large number of symbols and signs in different media for promotion and communication, which explains the dominant role which symbols play in creating effective messages. With the cultural evolution, visual patterns have been developed and applied to the identification of individuals or groups, such as the seal, family crest and national emblem. In recent years, “individuality” has been a trend fanatically embraced by youngsters; blazon patterns are thereby commonly seen in their clothing or accessories, and popularly used in trademarks or merchandise packing. This study aims to make the origin and conventions of blazon patterns better understood by surveying the most applied pattern styles and colors in the market. The Semantic Differential method will be adopted to explore the images behind the patterns in order to provide a way to better understand the blazons from the perspectives of their design, color, quality, viewpoint, and pattern composition. The objectives of this study are to: 1.Probe into the origin and symbolic meanings of blazon patterns through literature analysis. 2.Understand the connotations of the pattern elements; compare and analyze the design, color and presentation of crown, coat of arms and support patterns applied in trademarks in order to study the minimum recognizability of a blazon pattern. 3.Explore the elements of blazon patterns currently used in merchandise packing and clothing in Taiwan’s market, in order to list the favored patterns applied in graphic visual arts and packing designs. 4.Discuss the color arrangements and images for the current pattern design of crown, coat of arms and supporter.
