Besozzi, Michael T. ""To Blaze Forever in a Blazing World": Queer Reconstruction and Cultural Memory in the Works of Alan Moore." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2011. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/communication_theses/79.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a queer analysis of two graphic novels by writer Alan Moore: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen series (art by Kevin O’Neill, 1999-Present) and Lost Girls (art by Melinda Gebbie, 1992-3). These two works re-contextualize familiar characters such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Mina Murray, and Alice to uncover both the liberating desires and the sexist, homophobic, and imperialistic anxieties underlining historically popular fiction. Focusing on three characters utilized in Moore’s work, this thesis argues that the ideological associations with those chosen characters and the reconstructions of queerness in their narratives offer contemporary subjects resistance to limiting cultural tendencies and create an alternative space that call attention to phobic societal constructs. Both Lost Girls and the League series redefine discursively constituted identities and offer the potential to re-write normative codes of sex and sexuality.

Chen, Wei. "Off Bragg blazing for TM polarization with rectangular gratings." Thesis, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/3414.

Full text
Abstract:
Perfect blazing to the m=-l spectral order was once assumed to be possible for only Bragg angle incidence, i.e. for an angled = sin- 1 (^) from the normal to the grating surface, where d/A is the grating period in wavelengths. The diffracted beam is then back in the direction of incidence, an inconvenience in most applications such as multiplexers, de-multiplexers and frequency scanned antennas. Off Bragg blazing is preferable and now can be done with high efficiency. Here off Bragg blazing for T M polarized incidence on rectangular groove gratings is investigated numerically and design curves are presented. It is a consequence of reciprocity that off Bragg blaze angles must occur in pairs #1 and 62 and these are related by a generalization of the Bragg equation sin 9\ + sin 92 — 2 • F°r groove width to period ratios a/d=0.5 perfect off Bragg blazing occurs most frequently for periods 0.9

Mills, Stephen. "Sublime Subjects and Ticklish Objects in Early Modern English Utopias." 2013. http://scholarworks.gsu.edu/english_diss/116.

Full text
Abstract:
Critical theory has historically situated the beginning of the “modern” era of subjectivity near the end of the seventeenth century. Michel Foucault himself once said in an interview that modernity began with the writings of the late seventeenth-century philosopher Benedict Spinoza. But an examination of early modern English utopian literature demonstrates that a modern notion of subjectivity can be found in texts that pre-date Spinoza. In this dissertation, I examine four utopian texts—Thomas More’s Utopia, Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis, Margaret Cavendish’s Description of a New World, Called the Blazing World, and Henry Neville’s Isle of Pines—through the paradigm of Jacques Lacan’s tripartite model of subjectivity—the Imaginary, the Symbolic, and the Real. To mediate between Lacan’s psychoanalytic model and the historical aspects of these texts, such as their relationship with print culture and their engagement with political developments in seventeenth-century England, I employ the theories of the Marxist-Lacanian philosopher, Slavoj Žižek, to show that “early modern” subjectivity is in in fact no different from critical theory’s “modern” subject, despite pre-dating the supposed inception of such subjectivity. In addition, I engage with other prominent theorists, including Fredric Jameson, Jacques Derrida, and Donna Haraway, to come to an understanding about the ways in which critical theory can be useful to understand not only early modern literature, but also the contemporary, “real” world and the subjectivity we all seek to attain.

Designers are used to applying a large number of symbols and signs in different media for promotion and communication, which explains the dominant role which symbols play in creating effective messages. With the cultural evolution, visual patterns have been developed and applied to the identification of individuals or groups, such as the seal, family crest and national emblem. In recent years, “individuality” has been a trend fanatically embraced by youngsters; blazon patterns are thereby commonly seen in their clothing or accessories, and popularly used in trademarks or merchandise packing. This study aims to make the origin and conventions of blazon patterns better understood by surveying the most applied pattern styles and colors in the market. The Semantic Differential method will be adopted to explore the images behind the patterns in order to provide a way to better understand the blazons from the perspectives of their design, color, quality, viewpoint, and pattern composition. The objectives of this study are to: 1.Probe into the origin and symbolic meanings of blazon patterns through literature analysis. 2.Understand the connotations of the pattern elements; compare and analyze the design, color and presentation of crown, coat of arms and support patterns applied in trademarks in order to study the minimum recognizability of a blazon pattern. 3.Explore the elements of blazon patterns currently used in merchandise packing and clothing in Taiwan’s market, in order to list the favored patterns applied in graphic visual arts and packing designs. 4.Discuss the color arrangements and images for the current pattern design of crown, coat of arms and supporter.
