Full textThe aim of this study is to highlight how producers of teaching materials and the department for adapting teaching materials at The National Agency for Special Needs Education and Schools (SPSM) regard the impact of the ongoing digitization of the teaching aids market with focus on access to and accessibility of teaching materials for students with blindness. Another issue is the responsibility for this group of students to participate through accessibility to the same teaching materials as their peers. The results of the study can be of use to SPSM, publishers, local education authorities and schools. The methodology approach is discursive psychology and the method used is qualitative interviews. In total five separate interviews were carried out at five larger publishing companies, and four interviews with, in total, nine informants at SPSM, the department for adapting teaching materials, were performed, whereof three were group interviews. By analyzing what has been said the participants’ descriptions of accessibility to teaching aids are clarified, and so is responsibility and division of responsibility between different actors, and furthermore the consequences for students with blindness. The study illuminates changed requirements for support from society and teaching materials producers to satisfy the need of teaching materials for students with blindness reading braille, all due to the digitization of the current area. Demands to meet with new needs for changed work models and for an increased cooperation between actors, and within relevant agencies, are highlighted. In the study appear dilemmas arising between the following factors: expenses for accessibility, size of target group and conditions for different actors at a crossroads of government controlled businesses and commercial actors. The study clarifies the school’s responsibility for equivalence in education, which includes accessibility to teaching materials in use. There is a likelihood of a shift with schools and local educational authorities towards central procurement of digital teaching materials, which calls for client expertise. There is also concern about whether that expertise exists. Further research is needed on the increasing amount of digital teaching materials and its consequences for students with blindness. Interesting questions are, among others, how the pedagogical work is affected and which will be the impact on the student.

Full textIn public press as well as in periodicals there has been an ongoing debate that society, public health services as well as habilitative/rehabilitative institutes fail to meet the demands in providing for people living with disability in accordance with LSS, and how the in vivo interpretation of LSS in some instances might be seen to be disparate to its original intentions. Upon inspection there seemed to be a relative scarcity of scientific studies aiming at a holistic understanding of how the situation is perceived and experienced, especially as pertains to low vision clinics. Bearing aforementioned in mind this begs the question of interrelatedness in, and co-construction of, the situational perceptions of health care professionals and patients, of their shared work but also, based on the professionals’ view, the perception of what living with visual impairment entails. A question this paper aims to shed some light on.A multi-method methodology based in a life-world phenomenological approach, complemented with hermeneutic interpretation and subsequently a thematic content analysis was employed in an effort to investigate and, through four (4) semi-structured interviews, bring forth the respondents life-world and in so doing, through a theoretical understanding of the intrinsic interrelation of being and the interpretational process, illustrate their experience and/or understanding of their own as well as the patients situation. The study´s results stresses the importance of taking each individual´s agency, interaction and co-construction of results into concern when evaluating goal-attainment. Furthermore, concrete societal changes such as technological advancement and immigration, albeit outside the influence of both professionals and patients alike, was shown to impact the meeting between these two groups, and consequently the outcome of those meetings.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to describe perceptions and experiences from the [1] pedagogue’s perspective referred to as the respondents when teaching [2]severely visually impaired students with autism spectrum disorder. The respondents taking part of this study are teaching at public special schools focused on visual impairment. A qualitative methodology phemenography has been applied when collecting and analyzing empirical data. A common view of the respondents of the study indicate that availability, perceptivity, complicity, co-creativity, communication and collaboration are fundamental key success factors when teaching. Students with severe visual impairment and autism spectrum disorder often show an anomalistic behavior during complicity. Complicity should therefore be viewed from a holistic perspective, and as a possibility for the student to impact the teaching to achieve best possible result. Teaching should be based on motivation and interest. The respondents of the study perceive it varies what approach they have decided to apply for their teaching. One respondent deviated from the rest in terms of knowledge sharing. Common knowledge in terms of approach and methods, in addition to an understanding of the impact visual impairment in combination with autism spectrum disorder is believed to be crucial to find strategies for successful teaching. All respondents agreed that a topical way of working is a key success factor when teaching. A topical work procedure increases comprehension when combined with working with concrete tasks, emphasize with audio, tactile material and by video record lectures. Audio is of crucial importance. Some of the respondents indicated that “Guiding Collaboration/ICDP” was a key success factor when teaching. The majority of the respondents perceived that the headmaster assumes an administrative function. Student medical services is perceived as concerned despite a multi-facetted role at the school. The respondents had a common view that knowledge about the target group and past experience of development over time are important, and that development focused on accessible and available places for education are favored by knowledge within the field of visual impairment. Research combined with proven experience visualize key success factors when teaching severely visually impaired students with autism spectrum disorder. [1] Definition pedagogue in this study includes special pedagogues, special teachers and pedagogue assistants, therapists. Due to confidentiality, the term “pedagogue” has been used for all these groups. See sample. [2]Within special pedagogic agency of education, classification and categorization of visual impairment are applied according to WHO and Socialstyrelsen (valid from January 1st 2010) (https://www.spsm.se/funktionsnedsattningar/synnedsattning/kategorier-av-synnedsattning/).[Hämtad 2017-03-13].

Full textThis study aims to highlight how student assistants working with students with visual impairment perceive their assignment and professional role. The study is based on a phenomenological approach and previous research. The study results are based on the student assistant's stories about their impressions and experiences. The phenomenology firmly holds that the respondent's impressions and experiences are in the focus of the study. The study was conducted with semi-structured interviews. The respondents were contacted by the vision center or received information from the special education school authorities about the purpose and objectives of the study. The study is based on stories from four student assistants about their impressions and experiences regarding the assignment and the professional role. The results show ambiguous relationships regarding student assistant assignments and professional role in school activities. It can be seen that the student assistants mainly work with aids, visual interpretation or the teacher's tasks. It is also evident that the school management needs to develop their knowledge regarding the assignment and the professional role of the student assistant for students with visual impairment and continuing education is needed throughout the operations.

Full textBackground: Diabetes is one of the leading causes of vision loss and blindness. Since the prevalence of diabetes is increasing, the sight-related complications are a growing global health problem. A better understanding of how people with diabetic retinopathy are experiencing vision loss that affects their daily may be helpful in meeting with these people. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe people's experiences of living with diabetic retinopathy. Method: The study was conducted as a general literature review. Scientific, empirical studies using qualitative and quantitative approach is the basis for the study. Results: The results are reported from three different themes: sense of ownership, sense of limitations and feelings of inadequacy. Discussions: Nurse should be professional in the meeting with the patient. Communication, education and a holistic view of the person's experience of their lives is the basis for the person's care and treatment. It is important with health promotion efforts to prevent complications.

Full textOsteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP) or Tibia-bone prosthesis (TK-Pro) - a costs and quality of life analysis Wahl I., Hille K., Wagner F., Geerling G. INTRODUCTION: OOKP is an extensive procedure for the treatment of severe corneal disease with resulting bilateral blindness. It consists of a number of complex surgical stages with highly trained ophthalmic and maxillofacial surgeons involved. In stage I the keratoprosthesis is prepared from the root of a canine tooth as a haptic and an optic cylinder. Three month later in stage II this prosthesis is implanted into the eye following excision of cornea, lens, iris and vitreous body. If successful this procedure can rehabilitate a patient from blindness to full visual acuity. We calculated the costs of this complex procedure and evaluated the effects on quality of life in a retrospective case series. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The medical records of 32 patients who received an OOKP (N=27) or TK-Pro (N=5) for corneal blindness in a tertiary referral centre were reviewed. The costs for personnel, consumables and infrastructure were calculated for visits to the out-patient clinic, ward (including diagnostic procedures such as x-rays) and surgical theatre of the primary OOKP surgical stages as well as treatment of complications. Vision based daily life activities and quality of life were retrospectively assessed with a questionnaire in 26 out of 32 patients after surgery. RESULTS: The total costs for treatment, including preoperative assessment, stage I and stage II and two years of follow-up were 19.194 €. 336 € for preoperative assessment, 9.015 € for stage I and 7.896 € for stage II. The costs of follow-up visits to the outpatient clinic were 1.947 €. Costs for additional hospital stays to treat complications amounted to 6.756 €. 1.579 € for small operations, such as mucosa membrane revision and 5.177 € for complex operations, including pars plana vitrectomie and pressure relieving operations. At two years follow-up keratoprosthesis surgery was considered morphologically successful in 30 eyes with good kerathoprosthesis integration and position. In two eyes the keratoprosthesis had to be removed during the two years of follow up. Visual acuity in these 30 patients was: >= 0,8 in 20% (N=6); Visus >=0,4 in 53% (N=15); Visus >=0,1 in 70 % (N=21); Visus <0,1 in 30% (N=9). Total quality of life improved significantly (p<0,001), with regards to daily activities 58, 73 and 81% of patients were able to read a newspaper, to recognize faces or to orientate in a room by visual means. CONCLUSION: OOKP is a complex and cost intensive procedure which requires extensive follow-up. Thanks to the high longterm retention rate of these keratoprosthesis and good functional results it leads to a significant improvement in quality of life and hence justifies the financial effort

Betekenisvolle verhoudings dra by tot self-aktualisering.
