Abstract:
This thesis addresses the observed fluorescence intermittency of single semiconductor nanocrystals, so called Quantum Dots (QDs), which is also referred to as blinking. Despite continuous excitation their fluorescence is randomly interrupted by dark periods that can last over several minutes. Especially the extraction of power law dwell time statistics in bright and dark states indicates very complex underlying processes that are not fully understood to date. Here two approaches are followed to reveal the nature of the blinking mechanism. One addresses the common threshold method for extractio

A healthy human would be expected to show periodic blinks, making a brief closure of the eyelids. Most blinks are spontaneous, occurring regularly with no external stimulus. However a reflex blink can occur in response to external stimuli such as a bright light, a sudden loud noise, or an object approaching toward the eyes. A voluntary or forced blink is another type of blink in which the person deliberately closes the eyes and the lower eyelid raises to meet the upper eyelid. A complete blink, in which the upper eyelid touches the lower eyelid, contributes to the health of ocular surface b

With reference to a generic two-states system interacting with a bath it is shown that to properly describe the evolution of such a system within the formalism of the continuous time random walk (CTRW), it has to be taken into account that, if the system is prepared at time t=0 and the observation of the system starts at a later time ta>0, the distribution of the first sojourn times in each of the two states depends on ta, the age of the system. The hypothesis proposed is that tear film thinning, which occurs prior to full break-up, allows increased evaporation of the tear film. The evaporation produces a localised reduction in the tear film temperature, which is then detected by the temperature sensitive nerves in the corneal epithelium. To test this hypothesis, a series of experiments was completed. The first study, which investigated the pattern of diurnal change in corneal sensitivity, revealed that corneal sensit
