Full textIn popular memory, civilians’ morale during the Blitz remained high, war production was little affected by the bombings and the will to fight the Nazis was stronger than ever in a classless, fraternal society. The ‘People’s War’ turned civilians into extraordinary heroes in their ordinary city life, as this new kind of ‘total war’ was fought equally as hard on the ‘frontline’ as on the ‘home front’. However, since the late 1980s, historians have started to question this seemingly idealised vision of the determined, invincible spirit of the Blitzed population. In The Myth of the Blitz, Angus Calder argues that the image of a nation united in adversity and resisting hardship was almost entirely constructed by the political propaganda of the 1940s. He believes it necessary to critically rethink the collective memory of the Blitz, stating that it has been ignoring ‘how frightening and confusing the period [...] was for the British people’ since ‘the Myth stands in our way’ (1991, p. 18). Taking as a point of departure Calder’s chapter ‘Formulations of Feeling’, the main objective of my thesis is to oppose the historian’s idea that writers during the Second World War had a very limited ability to produce work that stood outside the People’s War rhetoric. Calder explains that although ‘the writer […] is in a position to defy the myth’s status as an adequate and convincing account of human feeling and behaviour’, unfortunately only few ‘work outside the myth’s paradigm’ (1991, pp. 143-144). Whilst it is true that literature ‘was conscripted into the war effort’ by a government that ‘enshrined [it] as a democratic principle’ (Hartley, 1997, pp. 6-7), I believe too reductive Angus Calder and Mark Rawlinson’s argument according to which ‘the character of wartime writing was strongly determined by its relations to the discourses with which, in the broadest sense, Britain’s war effort was administered’ (Rawlinson, 2000, p. 205). I contend that it is unwise to consider that authors writing in a time of overwhelming social and cultural propaganda could not critically reflect on their surroundings and solely contributed to a literature that aimed to form a coherent defence of war. This thesis is therefore one of the first pieces of research to take Angus Calder’s theoretical framework of the ‘myth of the Blitz’ as the main point of reference to discuss lesser known women’s texts of the 1940s. In his study, Calder deconstructs the ‘myth’ by confronting it with historical facts. In my thesis, I follow the same method by comparing specific values of the ‘People’s WaR4 rhetoric against the literary production of women writers. I have selected three main aspects of Calder’s work crucial to his definition of the constructed and superficial rhetoric of the ‘Blitz Spirit’: ‘class’, ‘patriotism’, and the more abstract ‘representation of the hurt body’. I analyse several novels by different authors in three separate chapters dedicated to each theme. Through the close reading of the nine texts I focus on, my aim is to shed light on forgotten authors who produced works that present us with a vision of the war that questions, and even challenged the propaganda setting they were written in. My main objective is to help place women writers in a category of valuable, talented and recognised war writers by highlighting their ability to maintain their individuality and capacity to criticise even when surrounded with Churchill’s very forceful propaganda.

Full textBill Brandt's quite rigorous works cover nearly half a century and encompass the four major kinds of photography (i.e. social photo-reportage, portraits, nudes and landscapes) with a true sense of poetry. Born in Hamburg in 1904, the denial of his German origins led him to fully identify himself with England where he lived most of his life in London until his death in 1983. This thesis aims at highlighting Brandt's modernist path as he constantly used the reflexive capabilities of photography as a way to satisfy his own quest for a native English identity. Beyond the geographical and cultural journeys experienced by the photographer before his arrival in England, the root causes of his quest actually lie in more tenuous matters related to memory as well as historical and genealogical perspectives. This personal quest for redefining his identity resulted in a progressive reshaping of his own works and practice of the medium to push back its inner limits: firstly driven by a scopic appetite, he then explored the many spatial and diegetic dimensions of image until finally evolving towards a more haptic and sculptural serenity as he was receiving a proper artistic recognition, hence offering a rereading of his modernist contributions

Full textThe United States' Public Education system shared concerns regarding declining achievement results across the nation. Numerous research studies suggested significant correlations to various variables, such as, SES (Socio-Economic Status), LEP (Limited English Proficiency), IEP (Individualized Educational Programs), ethnicity, and student mobility. The literature suggested these areas of concern need continued research to address specific issues, such as, how to close the educational gaps between students in these categories and students without these characteristics.
The Primary Investigator completed a case study to assist decision makers with transient students at a Midwest near-urban elementary school by specifically focusing on fifth grade students from the class of 2019. The methodology created by the Primary Investigator differentiated among Persistent, Transitional, and Transient mobility populations who entered a supplemental reading model program called, Blitz. The Primary Investigator divided mobility groups into specific categories to determine if needs were met for transient student populations, as compared to non-transient students. Few studies had addressed programs that specifically focused on methods of measurement tool that allowed for comparisons among mobile students in settings where non-mobile students reside.
The Primary Investigator's methods used in this case study allowed decision makers to continue to develop their program to fit the needs of all students at the case study school and to make decisions as to the effectiveness of their efforts to assist their Persistent, Transitional, and Transient students in their large near urban elementary school.
Results indicated there were improvements in each mobility group that participated in the Blitz supplemental reading model. Students in the most transient group significantly increased achievement and decreased variance in scores when compared to the Persistent population. The Primary Investigator's collected data suggested that students in the Persistent population averaged the highest achievement scores for all data sets. Achievement scores of students in the most Persistent populations who were of Caucasian and African American ethnicity and of low SES-socio-economic status did not have negative impacts on scores. Overall, this case study supported a positive effect of additional reading assistance on a student's independent reading ability and Communications Arts achievement in this large near-urban Midwest elementary school.

Full textThere are several pathogens causing bovine mastitis, but only Streptococcus agalactiae is feasible to be eradicated from a herd. Two herd data ( A and B ) were used to evaluate the economic and technical viability of the eradication of this pathogen, based on this pathogen attack program. It was used a 24 month period data from production; somatic cells count (SCC), clinical mastitis and expenditures. A cost-benefit analysis was carried out through mathematical models. It was identified 16 infected cows with S. agalactiae in herd A , and in herd B , there were 42, from which 31 associated with Staphylococcus aureus. The therapy effectiveness in eliminating S. agalactiae was about 100% in both herds. However, 18 cows kept the infection of S. aureus after the therapy (42% of effectiveness). The number of cases and cows with mastitis decrease was about 18% and 21%, respectively. For herd B it was found a SCC growing tendency on infected group and on total milk, 12 months before the therapy (980x10P 3 P and 968x10P 3 P cells/ml averages, respectively) and stabilization after treatment (577x10P 3 P cells/ml and 563x10P 3 P cells/ml averages, respectively). Treatment cost was about R$ 175.95 per cow considering the following higher cost items: laboratory exams (39%); milk discard (31%); veterinary medicaments and labor for additional operations (20%); and veterinary fees (10%). Payment due to quality and to the decrease in clinical mastitis cases represented about 55% e 34% of total benefit. However, it was not found significant milk production increase for treatment program (p>0.05), in treated group, nor in herd B . It was estimated about 11.67; 6.45 and 2.61 monetary unit return for each unit invested. Prophylactic procedures were important to eradicate and maintain the herd free from S. agalactiae, they have also contributed for lower incidence of clinical mastitis, decreasing SCC and discard/precocious mortality, so its adoption is recommended. Considering Brazilian requirements relative to somatic cells and milk total bacterial as well as S. agalactiae role in increasing these parameters, it is suggested an eradication program of this pathogen, which may help farmers to maintain production under standard requirements, as well as the consumers reducing risk and Government income loss due to taxes collection.

Full textWritten in the context of the Master's Degree in Communication Sciences, in the area of Media Studies and Journalism, this work aims to describe the practical experience acquired during a three month internship working at the newsroom of BLITZ magazine, and from it, it will try to reflect on the current state of musical and cultural journalism in Portugal, specifically its online presence. It will try to understand the way this magazine selects and creates its contents, and in what way the procedures for these are different than those taken for the printed version, as well as understand what are BLITZ's goals for one and the other, drawing their target audiences, the publishing timings for each content and the relationships with artists and cultural agents, and analyzing the magazine's interactivity with its readers on an online level. A reading on cultural journalism, specifically musical journalism, will be framed along with a reading on journalism's digital era, followed by an enumeration of the tasks performed during the internship and an analysis that seeks to answer the questions outlined above. During this work, it was found that BLITZ’s online presence is directly connected with its printed version, and that it acts, above all, as a vehicle for the contents which are published in the magazine as well as a way to fill the existing time gap between one issue and the next.
The production of news content on rap music follows a pattern that is almost identical in all portuguese press. During my three months’ internship at PÚBLICO (in Porto newsroom), I had the opportunity to write, on two occasions, about documentaries whose main theme (or part of) was this musical genre. Although it was not the most dominant theme during my internship, the similarity between the two articles I wrote has raised the question that leads to this investigation: How is rap, as a musical genre, mediated by PÚBLICO, Expresso and Blitz? Therefore, this paper first presents, as a report, my experience as an intern in the PÚBLICO newsroom. Then, from a theoretical perspective, a series of themes – the notion of “culture”, cultural journalism (its history, the portuguese perspective, the difficulties) – will be addressed. These topics will help to understand the role of a journalist in a cultural section, and the bridge between this dynamic and the mediatization of rap music happens at another point of this research: an approach to the birth of hip-hop, the contributions, the relationship between rap music and the media and, of course, the history of portuguese rap. The theory meets practice in the empirical research chapter, which is constructed with a three-month quantitative analysis of editions of the publications announced in the title of this Report and two open interviews with a journalist and a rap music critic. The analytical view of the collected data privileged the thematic, geographic and journalistic perspectives to find an answer to the question written above, which will be clearer with the interviews.

The aim of this study was to investigate the biological characteristics of Albugo bliti and its disease control. Albugo is an obligate parasitic Oomycete genus classified in the family Albuginaceae of Peronosporales, and among which A. bliti causes white rust of amaranth. Isolates were collected from the artificial inoculated plants of Amaranthus mangostanus, A. mangostanus forma ruber, A. lividus, and Alternanthera sessilis, respectively. However, there is no distinguishable difference in the morphology of isolates from different hosts and all identified as A. bliti. Zoospores, the main inocula of amaranth white rust, germinated and penetrated host plant via stomata, and then formed substomatal vesicles and coenocytic hyphae in the substomatal chamber. Hyphae grew intercellularly with lateral globose haustoria absorbing the host nutrients. The fungus formed sporangia and sori in spongy mesophyll at 4 - 5 days after inoculation, and in the meanwhile formed antheridia and oogonia in spongy mesophyll and veins. Subsequently, mating between antheridia and oogonia occurred, and then oospores developed at 10 - 11 days after inoculation. Infection and symptoms only occurred on cotyledon and leaves of amaranth. As stomata open more frequently on the abaxial leaf surfaces than on the adaxial leaf surfaces, infection sites and sori were mainly distributed on the abaxial leaf epidermis. Cross inoculations by using whole plants, cotyledons and detached-leaf method showed that infection only occurred on their original host species, manifesting the host specificity of A. bliti. Maintaining for a minimum of one hour of water film on the leaf surface was required for the infection of A. bliti. The highest amount of discharged zoospores was obtained from the sporangia at 8 - 9 days after inoculation. Zoospores would be discharged within 20-40 minutes as mature sporangia were incubated in distilled water at 24 oC, and discharged most abundantly about 4 hr after treatment. The temperatures for sporangia to discharge zoospores ranged from 12 to 28 oC, while 20 - 24 oC was optimal. The zoospore discharging was inhibited at 32 -36 oC, but resumed partially upon transferring these sporangia to 20 oC for 4 hr. Sporangia of A. bliti could survive for one month at room temperature and for one year in soil. The surviving sporangia were able to discharge zoospores in wet soil and caused infection. Salt solutions like acetic acid and copper acetate, and buffers used were found to be inhibitory to the sporangial germination of A. bliti. Disease development of white rust was studied in field. Initial inocula of infection came from soil. The infected cotyledons and diseased leaves of seedlings yielded sporangia abundantly at 3-4 leaf stage, serving as the secondary inocula for infection. Disease development of white rust was slow in the beginning. Symptom did not appear until 10 - 14 days after sowing seed, since then disease incidence and severity increased rapidly. The symptoms mainly occurred among the 4th to 8th leaf counted from the top. Diseased plant distributed randomly in the field at cotyledon and one leaf stage, and the disease was spreading to the entire field afterward. Among the several fungicides tested against sporangial germination, copper hydroxide + oxine-copper and those containing cupric ions were the most effective. The best time of fungicide application was at cotyledon stage, and only one application was adequate. Planting amaranth in plastic tunnel or application of surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate were effective for controlling amaranth white rust in field. The phylogenetic relationship among A. bliti, A. ipomoeae-aquaticae, and A. portulacae collected in Taiwan were analyzed using random amplified polymorphic DNA method (RAPD) and rDNA internal transcribed spacers (ITS) analysis. Results of RAPD and ITS showed the same phylogenetic relationship among tested Albugo species. The genetic distance of A. bliti isolates from Amaranthus spp. could be differentiated into two groups. One group contained Abw and Abr isolates from A. mangostanus, another one contained Abl isolates from A. lividus. Albugo bliti Aba isolates from Al. sessilis formed distinctly a separate group. Albugo ipomoeae-aquaticae was close to A. candida from Capsella bursa-pastoris, while A. portulacae was related most distantly among these tested Albugo spp. The phylogenetic diversity of A. bliti isolates suggested that they have coevolved with their hosts.

This thesis investigates the symmetry properties of the finite difference schemes for the spherical wave equation for Blatz-Ko materials. We use the Euler method, Lax method and Lax-Wendroff method to derive difference schemes and investigate their group properties. The maximum error, stability, consistency and precision of these schemes are analyzed.

This dissertation investigates the symmetry properties of the spherical wave equation for Blatz-Ko materials. Three invariant solutions are obtained by symmetry reduction. Two of them are in separable forms. The non-separable one is governed by a singular, non-autonomous second order ordinary differential equation. A variable transform is applied to turn this non-autonomous equation into an autonomous equation. By analyzing the phase plane of this autonomous equation we find out the condition for the solutions to develop singularity. Similar analyses are also carried out for the governing equation of an invariant solution derived from a multi-parameter symmetry. A special symmetry, the inverse time translational symmetry, of the Blatz-Ko wave equation is also studied. A correspondence between initial/boundary value problems is derived using this special symmetry. And this correspondence can be applied to reduce the duration of the experiments or numerical calculations for the dynamic behavior of the Blatz-Ko spheres. The correspondence can also be used to analyze the limiting dynamic behavior of the Blatz-Ko sphere.
