Abstract:

Fisher, Stephanie Jane. "The Blitz and the bomber offensive : a case study in British home propaganda, 1939-45." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/19745.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is a case study of British home front propaganda in the period 1939-45, with particular reference to film propaganda; newsreels, official films, and feature films. It examines propaganda about German bombing raids against Britain during the Blitz and about RAF bombing raids against Germany in the Bomber Offensive. Chapter One sets out the aims and objectives of the thesis and gives some details about the primary sources used. Chapter Two deals briefly with pre-war planning for a propaganda Ministry and the basic structure of the wartime Ministry of Information (MOI). It also discusses in detail the way in which the MOI planned to shape propaganda about the Blitz in the period before the Blitz began. Chapter Three gives a detailed examination of propaganda about the Blitz during the period when it was taking place, and the way in which the RAF's raids against Germany were dealt with in this early phase of the war. The main emphasis is on film propaganda but some comparative data is given covering press and radio presentations. Chapter Four examines the period May 1941 to May 1942 and looks at the way in which propaganda policies for presenting the Blitz and Bomber Offensive were restructured to take account of changing circumstances: the need for increased aircraft production to support Britain's war effort; and the Alliance with the Soviet Union and America. Chapter Five deals with propaganda output about the Blitz and Bomber Offensive for the period covered by Chapter Four. Chapter Six discusses the development of Britain's bombing policy against Germany during the period 1940 to 1945. This chapter sets the context for a detailed study of propaganda about the latter stages of the Bomber Offensive.

Hodgson, Guy Richard. "Manchester and its press under the bomb : Britain's 'other Fleet Street' and its contribution to a myth of the Blitz." Thesis, University of Chester, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/314716.

Full text
Abstract:
The Manchester Blitz was relatively short, lasting two nights in December 1940, when around 1,000 people were killed and more than 3,000 injured in the city centre, Salford and the residential areas near Old Trafford. This thesis focuses on the reaction to this heavy bombing by the local and regional newspapers of Manchester, which was Britain’s second press centre at the time. The newspapers, the Manchester Guardian, Manchester Evening News and Evening Chronicle, are studied over an eight-week period from mid December 1940. According to these editions, Mancunians were unbowed by the death and destruction wrought by the Luftwaffe and had a steely determination to win the war. Contemporary writing, including individual diaries and reports from Mass Observation and Home Intelligence, tells a more complicated and nuanced story. The thesis finds that the Manchester newspapers submitted their coverage to more self-imposed censorship than was being demanded even by a government desperate to maintain morale. They did so partly because they feared they would be closed down if they offended the censor, but also because they felt that patriotism had a greater priority than maintaining the news values of the time. The newspapers could have exposed local authority incompetence and shortcomings in the emergency services but chose instead to paint a rosy picture of defiance by omission, distortion and, in some cases, deceit. They did not do so independently, but in accordance with the reporting norms in Fleet Street and other British provincial cities during the Second World War. Circulations rose for both national and local newspapers during the war, but the cost was a further severing of the confidence people had in their press. When readers themselves became the story by being the victims of the Blitz they discovered there was often a gap between the truth and what appeared in print. It is a trust that has not been recovered to this day.

Kelsey, Darren. "Mentioning the war : the myth of the 'Blitz spirit' in British newspaper responses to the July 7th bombings." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2010. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54403/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the myth of the Blitz spirit in British newspaper responses to the London bombings, July 7 2005. The Blitz spirit is a popular story of Britain during the Second World War, uniting together with defiance and resilience to overcome the threat of invasion from Nazi Germany. By using Roland Barthes' theory of myth, I scrutinise the origins of the Blitz spirit, the messages it suppresses and the ideological impact it had on media coverage after July 7th. A content analysis shows how prominent certain discursive elements were in British newspaper articles between July 8th and August 8th, 2005. A Critical Discourse Analysis then examines how the Blitz spirit was constructed during this period and the ideological role it played. The set of circumstances that London faced in 2005 were drastically different to that of 1940. The perpetrators on July 7th were British citizens, not a foreign enemy equating to the threat of Nazi Germany. Due to a shift in historic context, Blitz spirit analogies were used in different ways, often serving conflicting interests. In some cases a Blitz spirit discourse condoned military responses to terrorism and suppressed critical discourses about the war on terror. But in others it mobilised criticisms of British and American foreign policy. Some discourses reflected criticisms of Islam, whilst others praised London for its multicultural unity. This thesis explores the complex role of the Blitz spirit and argues that whilst it was a problematic feature of post-July 7th media coverage, it did not serve one ideological purpose. Rather, an ideological battleground occurred when elements of myth and popular memory were reused to define events in the present. By analysing this nuanced role of the Blitz spirit, I develop Roland Barthes' theory by considering what happens when a myth established at one moment in time is reused in a different historical context.

Abstract:
In popular memory, civilians’ morale during the Blitz remained high, war production was little affected by the bombings and the will to fight the Nazis was stronger than ever in a classless, fraternal society. The ‘People’s War’ turned civilians into extraordinary heroes in their ordinary city life, as this new kind of ‘total war’ was fought equally as hard on the ‘frontline’ as on the ‘home front’. However, since the late 1980s, historians have started to question this seemingly idealised vision of the determined, invincible spirit of the Blitzed population. In The Myth of the Blitz, Angus Calder argues that the image of a nation united in adversity and resisting hardship was almost entirely constructed by the political propaganda of the 1940s. He believes it necessary to critically rethink the collective memory of the Blitz, stating that it has been ignoring ‘how frightening and confusing the period [...] was for the British people’ since ‘the Myth stands in our way’ (1991, p. 18). Taking as a point of departure Calder’s chapter ‘Formulations of Feeling’, the main objective of my thesis is to oppose the historian’s idea that writers during the Second World War had a very limited ability to produce work that stood outside the People’s War rhetoric. Calder explains that although ‘the writer […] is in a position to defy the myth’s status as an adequate and convincing account of human feeling and behaviour’, unfortunately only few ‘work outside the myth’s paradigm’ (1991, pp. 143-144). Whilst it is true that literature ‘was conscripted into the war effort’ by a government that ‘enshrined [it] as a democratic principle’ (Hartley, 1997, pp. 6-7), I believe too reductive Angus Calder and Mark Rawlinson’s argument according to which ‘the character of wartime writing was strongly determined by its relations to the discourses with which, in the broadest sense, Britain’s war effort was administered’ (Rawlinson, 2000, p. 205). I contend that it is unwise to consider that authors writing in a time of overwhelming social and cultural propaganda could not critically reflect on their surroundings and solely contributed to a literature that aimed to form a coherent defence of war. This thesis is therefore one of the first pieces of research to take Angus Calder’s theoretical framework of the ‘myth of the Blitz’ as the main point of reference to discuss lesser known women’s texts of the 1940s. In his study, Calder deconstructs the ‘myth’ by confronting it with historical facts. In my thesis, I follow the same method by comparing specific values of the ‘People’s WaR4 rhetoric against the literary production of women writers. I have selected three main aspects of Calder’s work crucial to his definition of the constructed and superficial rhetoric of the ‘Blitz Spirit’: ‘class’, ‘patriotism’, and the more abstract ‘representation of the hurt body’. I analyse several novels by different authors in three separate chapters dedicated to each theme. Through the close reading of the nine texts I focus on, my aim is to shed light on forgotten authors who produced works that present us with a vision of the war that questions, and even challenged the propaganda setting they were written in. My main objective is to help place women writers in a category of valuable, talented and recognised war writers by highlighting their ability to maintain their individuality and capacity to criticise even when surrounded with Churchill’s very forceful propaganda.

Full text
Abstract:
Bill Brandt's quite rigorous works cover nearly half a century and encompass the four major kinds of photography (i.e. social photo-reportage, portraits, nudes and landscapes) with a true sense of poetry. Born in Hamburg in 1904, the denial of his German origins led him to fully identify himself with England where he lived most of his life in London until his death in 1983. This thesis aims at highlighting Brandt's modernist path as he constantly used the reflexive capabilities of photography as a way to satisfy his own quest for a native English identity. Beyond the geographical and cultural journeys experienced by the photographer before his arrival in England, the root causes of his quest actually lie in more tenuous matters related to memory as well as historical and genealogical perspectives. This personal quest for redefining his identity resulted in a progressive reshaping of his own works and practice of the medium to push back its inner limits: firstly driven by a scopic appetite, he then explored the many spatial and diegetic dimensions of image until finally evolving towards a more haptic and sculptural serenity as he was receiving a proper artistic recognition, hence offering a rereading of his modernist contributions

Abstract:

The United States' Public Education system shared concerns regarding declining achievement results across the nation. Numerous research studies suggested significant correlations to various variables, such as, SES (Socio-Economic Status), LEP (Limited English Proficiency), IEP (Individualized Educational Programs), ethnicity, and student mobility. The literature suggested these areas of concern need continued research to address specific issues, such as, how to close the educational gaps between students in these categories and students without these characteristics.

The Primary Investigator completed a case study to assist decision makers with transient students at a Midwest near-urban elementary school by specifically focusing on fifth grade students from the class of 2019. The methodology created by the Primary Investigator differentiated among Persistent, Transitional, and Transient mobility populations who entered a supplemental reading model program called, Blitz. The Primary Investigator divided mobility groups into specific categories to determine if needs were met for transient student populations, as compared to non-transient students. Few studies had addressed programs that specifically focused on methods of measurement tool that allowed for comparisons among mobile students in settings where non-mobile students reside.

The Primary Investigator's methods used in this case study allowed decision makers to continue to develop their program to fit the needs of all students at the case study school and to make decisions as to the effectiveness of their efforts to assist their Persistent, Transitional, and Transient students in their large near urban elementary school.

Results indicated there were improvements in each mobility group that participated in the Blitz supplemental reading model. Students in the most transient group significantly increased achievement and decreased variance in scores when compared to the Persistent population. The Primary Investigator's collected data suggested that students in the Persistent population averaged the highest achievement scores for all data sets. Achievement scores of students in the most Persistent populations who were of Caucasian and African American ethnicity and of low SES-socio-economic status did not have negative impacts on scores. Overall, this case study supported a positive effect of additional reading assistance on a student's independent reading ability and Communications Arts achievement in this large near-urban Midwest elementary school.

Abstract:
This work is rooted in a need for dermatologists to explore skin characteristicsin depth. The inuence of skin disease such as acne in dermal tissues is stilla complex task to assess. Among the possibilities, high frequency ultrasoundimaging is a paradigm shift to probe and characterizes upper and deep dermis. For this purpose, a cohort of 58 high-frequency 3D images has been acquiredby the French laboratory Pierre Fabre in order to study acne vulgaris disease. This common skin disorder is a societal challenge and burden aecting late adolescentsacross the world. The medical protocol developed by Pierre Fabre wasto screen a lesion every day during 9 days for dierent patients with ultrasoundimaging. The provided data features skin epidermis and dermis structure witha fantastic resolution. The strategy we led to study these data can be explainedin three steps. First, epidermis surface is detected among artifacts and noisethanks to a robust level-set algorithm. Secondly, acne spots are located on theresulting height map and associated to each other among the data by computingand thresholding a local variance. And eventually potential inammatorydermal cavities related to each lesion are geometrically and statistically characterizedin order to assess the evolution of the disease. The results presentan automatic algorithm which permits dermatologists to screen acne vulgarislesions and to characterize them in a complete data set. It can hence be a powerfultoolbox to assess the eciency of a treatment.

Two herd data ( A and B ) were used to evaluate the economic and technical viability of the eradication of this pathogen, based on this pathogen attack program. It was used a 24 month period data from production; somatic cells count (SCC), clinical mastitis and expenditures. A cost-benefit analysis was carried out through mathematical models. It was identified 16 infected cows with S. agalactiae in herd A , and in herd B , there were 42, from which 31 associated with Staphylococcus aureus. The therapy effectiveness in eliminating S. agalactiae was about 100% in both herds. However, 18 cows kept the infection of S. aureus after the therapy (42% of effectiveness). The number of cases and cows with mastitis decrease was about 18% and 21%, respectively. For herd B it was found a SCC growing tendency on infected group and on total milk, 12 months before the therapy (980x10P 3 P and 968x10P 3 P cells/ml averages, respectively) and stabilization after treatment (577x10P 3 P cells/ml and 563x10P 3 P cells/ml averages, respectively). Treatment cost was about R$ 175.95 per cow considering the following higher cost items: laboratory exams (39%); milk discard (31%); veterinary medicaments and labor for additional operations (20%); and veterinary fees (10%). Payment due to quality and to the decrease in clinical mastitis cases represented about 55% e 34% of total benefit. However, it was not found significant milk production increase for treatment program (p>0.05), in treated group, nor in herd B . It was estimated about 11.67; 6.45 and 2.61 monetary unit return for each unit invested. Prophylactic procedures were important to eradicate and maintain the herd free from S. agalactiae, they have also contributed for lower incidence of clinical mastitis, decreasing SCC and discard/precocious mortality, so its adoption is recommended. Considering Brazilian requirements relative to somatic cells and milk total bacterial as well as S. agalactiae role in increasing these parameters, it is suggested an eradication program of this pathogen, which may help farmers to maintain production under standard requirements, as well as the consumers reducing risk and Government income loss due to taxes collection.

Wang, Yi. "Finite deformations of a generalized Blatz-Ko material." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2832.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, the finite deformations of a certain class of compressible, isotropic elastic materials are investigated. The class is characterized by a two-parameter family of strain energy functions which includes the well-known Blatz-Ko material model for foam rubbers. The Blatz-Ko material, which has been arrived at by experiment and whose deformations have been studied previously, is obtained from the considered class of materials by specifying one of the two parameters involved in the definition of the class. On employing the semi-inverse method, according to which the form of the solution is given at the outset in terms of functions which are then determined from the equilibrium equations and boundary conditions, closed-form solutions to the equilibrium equations are obtained for the non-homogeneous deformations describing the straightening of a sector of a circular tube, the bending of a rectangular block into a sector of a circular tube, the eversion of cylindrical and spherical shells, and the cylindrical and spherical expansions, and a number of associated boundary value problems are investigated using both analytical and numerical methods. Certain situations in which solutions of the pre-assigned form cannot exist are identified and cases of non-uniqueness are dealt with by discriminating between the different solutions on physical grounds. The homogeneous deformations of the materials in this class are also examined and, throughout, comparison is being made with the behaviour of the Blatz-Ko material. For the whole range of deformations examined, it is found that the materials for which one of the parameters is greater than, or equal to, two (the case when this parameter equals to two corresponds to the Blatz-Ko material) become harder as this parameter increases, but that otherwise they all behave in a similar manner. Consequently, it is concluded that the materials in this particular subclass will also represent foam rubbers of the type described by the Blatz-Ko material. In order to describe the situations in which the solutions become unstable, the conditions for the strong ellipticity of the equilibrium equations for non-linearly elastic materials are reformulated so as to be expressible in terms of the derivatives of the strain-energy function regarded as a function of the principal stretches. Use of these conditions reveals that the solutions to the considered boundary value problems become unstable at certain critical values of the applied loads.

Abstract:

Sanches, Tiago Nunes. "Longitudinal flight control with a variable span morphing wing." Master's thesis, Universidade da Beira Interior, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.6/2006.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study focuses on the design of a longitudinal flight controller for an unmanned aircraft equipped with dissymmetric variable-span system (VSMW or Variable-Span Morphing Wing). Its primary role consists in the longitudinal flight stabilization of the aeroplane while in levelled cruise flight, although, it was designed to offer longitudinal flight stabilization for other flight phases as well, such as e.g. take-off and landing. The stabilization algorithm relies on the most up-to-date developments in the state-of-the-art LQR and Batz-Kleinman controller techniques to stabilize the aircraft on its intended longitudinal attitude upon any small atmospheric disturbances inflicted. It was designed for the experimental UAV prototype Olharapo equipped with the VSMW, so it can automatically adjust the VSMW overall wingspan in accordance with the flight speed and stabilize the aircraft in the desired attitude, although, its modular concept allows it to be used for different configurations of the aircraft or even for a different aircraft. The development, simulation and testing of the algorithm were done using the MATLAB® software and the aircraft’s stability and control derivatives previously obtained using the XFLR5® software. Minor adaptations of the flight dynamics equations were performed to allow the compatibilization with the VSMW. The required implementation of imposed flight qualities was also performed to ensure proper scaling the controller weight matrix for optimal values. Finally, the algorithm was tested using three different methods: Classic Disturbances Simulation, Sinusoidal Pitch Variation Test Response and Random Pitch Variation Test Response.

Master’s thesis deals with the generation of digital audio signals with band-limited frequency spectrum, i.e. without the aliasing distortion. Various methods of generating band-limited rectangular, triangular, and sawtooth waveforms are described in the theoretical part. The described methods are programmed in the Matlab programming environment and compared in terms of real-time parameter changes, such as duty cycle change of rectangular waveform or continuous change of frequency. The main part of the thesis describes implementation of methods of successive integration of band-limited impulse train and method of differentiated parabolic waveforms in C++ language. The implemented methods were integrated into a plug-in of VST technology that generates an audio signal in real time. The implemented methods are compared in terms of computational complexity and distortion of the generated signal.

Abstract:
Written in the context of the Master's Degree in Communication Sciences, in the area of Media Studies and Journalism, this work aims to describe the practical experience acquired during a three month internship working at the newsroom of BLITZ magazine, and from it, it will try to reflect on the current state of musical and cultural journalism in Portugal, specifically its online presence. It will try to understand the way this magazine selects and creates its contents, and in what way the procedures for these are different than those taken for the printed version, as well as understand what are BLITZ's goals for one and the other, drawing their target audiences, the publishing timings for each content and the relationships with artists and cultural agents, and analyzing the magazine's interactivity with its readers on an online level. A reading on cultural journalism, specifically musical journalism, will be framed along with a reading on journalism's digital era, followed by an enumeration of the tasks performed during the internship and an analysis that seeks to answer the questions outlined above. During this work, it was found that BLITZ’s online presence is directly connected with its printed version, and that it acts, above all, as a vehicle for the contents which are published in the magazine as well as a way to fill the existing time gap between one issue and the next.

Abstract:
The production of news content on rap music follows a pattern that is almost identical in all portuguese press. During my three months’ internship at PÚBLICO (in Porto newsroom), I had the opportunity to write, on two occasions, about documentaries whose main theme (or part of) was this musical genre. Although it was not the most dominant theme during my internship, the similarity between the two articles I wrote has raised the question that leads to this investigation: How is rap, as a musical genre, mediated by PÚBLICO, Expresso and Blitz? Therefore, this paper first presents, as a report, my experience as an intern in the PÚBLICO newsroom. Then, from a theoretical perspective, a series of themes – the notion of “culture”, cultural journalism (its history, the portuguese perspective, the difficulties) – will be addressed. These topics will help to understand the role of a journalist in a cultural section, and the bridge between this dynamic and the mediatization of rap music happens at another point of this research: an approach to the birth of hip-hop, the contributions, the relationship between rap music and the media and, of course, the history of portuguese rap. The theory meets practice in the empirical research chapter, which is constructed with a three-month quantitative analysis of editions of the publications announced in the title of this Report and two open interviews with a journalist and a rap music critic. The analytical view of the collected data privileged the thematic, geographic and journalistic perspectives to find an answer to the question written above, which will be clearer with the interviews.

The aim of this study was to investigate the biological characteristics of Albugo bliti and its disease control. Albugo is an obligate parasitic Oomycete genus classified in the family Albuginaceae of Peronosporales, and among which A. bliti causes white rust of amaranth. Isolates were collected from the artificial inoculated plants of Amaranthus mangostanus, A. mangostanus forma ruber, A. lividus, and Alternanthera sessilis, respectively. However, there is no distinguishable difference in the morphology of isolates from different hosts and all identified as A. bliti. Zoospores, the main inocula of amaranth white rust, germinated and penetrated host plant via stomata, and then formed substomatal vesicles and coenocytic hyphae in the substomatal chamber. Hyphae grew intercellularly with lateral globose haustoria absorbing the host nutrients. The fungus formed sporangia and sori in spongy mesophyll at 4 - 5 days after inoculation, and in the meanwhile formed antheridia and oogonia in spongy mesophyll and veins. Subsequently, mating between antheridia and oogonia occurred, and then oospores developed at 10 - 11 days after inoculation. Infection and symptoms only occurred on cotyledon and leaves of amaranth. As stomata open more frequently on the abaxial leaf surfaces than on the adaxial leaf surfaces, infection sites and sori were mainly distributed on the abaxial leaf epidermis. Cross inoculations by using whole plants, cotyledons and detached-leaf method showed that infection only occurred on their original host species, manifesting the host specificity of A. bliti. Maintaining for a minimum of one hour of water film on the leaf surface was required for the infection of A. bliti. The highest amount of discharged zoospores was obtained from the sporangia at 8 - 9 days after inoculation. Zoospores would be discharged within 20-40 minutes as mature sporangia were incubated in distilled water at 24 oC, and discharged most abundantly about 4 hr after treatment. The temperatures for sporangia to discharge zoospores ranged from 12 to 28 oC, while 20 - 24 oC was optimal. The zoospore discharging was inhibited at 32 -36 oC, but resumed partially upon transferring these sporangia to 20 oC for 4 hr. Sporangia of A. bliti could survive for one month at room temperature and for one year in soil. The surviving sporangia were able to discharge zoospores in wet soil and caused infection. Salt solutions like acetic acid and copper acetate, and buffers used were found to be inhibitory to the sporangial germination of A. bliti. Disease development of white rust was studied in field. Initial inocula of infection came from soil. The infected cotyledons and diseased leaves of seedlings yielded sporangia abundantly at 3-4 leaf stage, serving as the secondary inocula for infection. Disease development of white rust was slow in the beginning. Symptom did not appear until 10 - 14 days after sowing seed, since then disease incidence and severity increased rapidly. The symptoms mainly occurred among the 4th to 8th leaf counted from the top. Diseased plant distributed randomly in the field at cotyledon and one leaf stage, and the disease was spreading to the entire field afterward. Among the several fungicides tested against sporangial germination, copper hydroxide + oxine-copper and those containing cupric ions were the most effective. The best time of fungicide application was at cotyledon stage, and only one application was adequate. Planting amaranth in plastic tunnel or application of surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate were effective for controlling amaranth white rust in field. The phylogenetic relationship among A. bliti, A. ipomoeae-aquaticae, and A. portulacae collected in Taiwan were analyzed using random amplified polymorphic DNA method (RAPD) and rDNA internal transcribed spacers (ITS) analysis. Results of RAPD and ITS showed the same phylogenetic relationship among tested Albugo species. The genetic distance of A. bliti isolates from Amaranthus spp. could be differentiated into two groups. One group contained Abw and Abr isolates from A. mangostanus, another one contained Abl isolates from A. lividus. Albugo bliti Aba isolates from Al. sessilis formed distinctly a separate group. Albugo ipomoeae-aquaticae was close to A. candida from Capsella bursa-pastoris, while A. portulacae was related most distantly among these tested Albugo spp. The phylogenetic diversity of A. bliti isolates suggested that they have coevolved with their hosts.

This dissertation investigates the symmetry properties of the spherical wave equation for Blatz-Ko materials. Three invariant solutions are obtained by symmetry reduction. Two of them are in separable forms. The non-separable one is governed by a singular, non-autonomous second order ordinary differential equation. A variable transform is applied to turn this non-autonomous equation into an autonomous equation. By analyzing the phase plane of this autonomous equation we find out the condition for the solutions to develop singularity. Similar analyses are also carried out for the governing equation of an invariant solution derived from a multi-parameter symmetry. A special symmetry, the inverse time translational symmetry, of the Blatz-Ko wave equation is also studied. A correspondence between initial/boundary value problems is derived using this special symmetry. And this correspondence can be applied to reduce the duration of the experiments or numerical calculations for the dynamic behavior of the Blatz-Ko spheres. The correspondence can also be used to analyze the limiting dynamic behavior of the Blatz-Ko sphere.

Abstract:
This dissertation arose from a need to derive an inclusive model for describing the historical meanings of progressive education. It considers reform rhetoric published in two widely distributed and accessible journals in Ontario, The School and The Canadian School Journal, between 1919 and 1942. These sources brought together a wide variety of educationists in the province, including teachers, school board representatives, members of the Department of Education, inspectors, and the staff of teacher training institutions, and were forums for the exploration of new and progressive educational ideas. Various conceptions and interpretations of what progressive education would entail were published side by side, in parallel. This dissertation describes the rhetoric of progressive education, which concerned three domains—active learning, individualized instruction, and the linking of schools to contemporary society—and considers the distinctions within this language. Further, this dissertation argues that progressivist ideas were interpreted and represented in different ways according to conceptual orientation and context. Three distinct interpretations of progressive education are described in this thesis. The first progressivist orientation was primarily concerned with child study and developmental psychology; the second concerned social efficiency and industrial order; the third concerned social meliorism and cooperation. Hence, I draw not only on three different domains of progressivist rhetoric, but also on three distinct orientations to reform. What emerges is a description of how different progressivists understood and represented Ontario’s transforming schools, in a context affected by the forces of modernity, world war, and economic depression.
