Abstract:
Abstract Arctic communities are experienced with severe weather, but impacts can still be serious, particularly when the intensity or persistence of hazardous conditions is extreme. Such was the case for the community of Clyde River (Kangiqtugaapik), Nunavut, Canada, which experienced 33 blizzard days during winter 2021/22—likely the most at Clyde River since at least 1978/79. Blizzard conditions resulted from unusually frequent high winds rather than excessive snowfall. The most severe stretch included eight blizzard days over an 11-day period, with top wind gusts of 98 km h−1. Winds caused s

This work is the second volume of a comprehensive ‘trilogy’ aimed at accounting for the theatrical discourse during the communist period. Covering more than a decade, a so-called ‘deceitful spring’ (1965-1977), comes after ‘the fluctuating thaw’ (1956-1964) tackled by volume one and is followed by ‘the blizzard’ (1978-1989) which ends just before the fall of the totalitarian regime in our country. The author’s endeavour is unprecedented, and the comprehensive research conducted on almost five hundred pages ranges from the education in the field to the party’s contribution

In order to navigate and thereby survive in a hostile environment the Inuit have developed a sophisticated body of knowledge that makes travel possible even during a blizzard or white-out. This unique skill was developed from a thorough understanding of the properties of snow and local meteorology. Problems of space, time and distance are also taken into account by Inuit navigators but this is done with minimal use of quantification and abstraction. However this highly practical form of navigation in which the Inuit deal directly with their environment is none the less scientific and empirical

Abstract:
The image of a blizzard goes beyond the scope of the ordinary landscape in Russian literature. It transcends the characteristic of an artistic space and the background for the plot development. The complex of motifs, established images and compositional systems which accompany the creation of the “blizzard” mythologem were being formed over the last two centuries. The authors of the 19th–21st centuries form the tradition of reflecting the image of “blizzard” putting it in the title of the work and in the center of the image system. We can identify at least seven works with the identical title

Between Saturday night and Monday morning, more than nineteen inches of snow fell as librarians settled into hotel rooms and bars from Streeterville to McCormick Place.1 In winters past, such storms have at times been politically significant

Only a few months shy of its twenty-fifth anniversary as the oldest publishing house of Canadian drama, Playwrights Canada (formerly Playwrights Union of Canada) deserves our congratulations. As Susan Bennett documents in our review article, PUC was formed as a small group on the Gaspé Peninsula in 1971. The date and the place seem now, in retrospect, a fitting start for publishing Canadian drama: 1971, part of the heady days of collective creation and playwrights unions; the Gaspé Peninsula, one of the geographic edges of the country, just as Canadian drama publishing was then on the farthest

Literature overview. Precipitation measurements include random and systematic errors. Systematic errors increase in the following order: evaporation loss, wetting loss, and wind-induced undercatch (World Meteorological Organization, 2008). The last one occurs because of the aerodynamic blockage under the precipitation gauge collector (Baghapour et al. 2017; Sevruk & Nespor, 1994). Field experiments have shown that wind-induced undercatch reaches 14% for rain and 40% for snow for the Tretyakov wind-shielded gauge (Goodison et al., 1998). This chapter looks into the Democratic National Convention that returned to Chicago in 1996. It describes the Convention as the first presidential-nominating convention to be held in Chicago since the infamous and nationally televised 1968 Democratic National Convention. The chapter mentions Michael Bilandic, a shy, careful, competent, and hardworking lawyer, who succeeded Richard J. Daley as mayor of Chicago in 1976. It investigates how Bilandic kept Chicago on a straight course, even if he did not provide dynamic leadership. It also recounts Bilandic's undoing due to the fabled Blizzard of 1

Blizzard phenomena is a complex atmospheric event, in which the snow that falls or has fallen is blown away by the wind, so that the visibility decrease significant enough and the assessment of the simultaneous snow fall is impossible (Țîșlea, D. et al. 1965). The region of Oltenia is featured by a climate with Mediterranean influences, with the dominance of northwest and east winds (Roșu, Al. Et al. 1971). The contact between the cold and the warm air masses leads to the increase of the horizontal baric gradient, which causes strong wind intensification. Due to the geographical position of th
