Abstract:
A modeling methodology for blog recommendation and forecasting based on information entropy is presented. With the increasing popularity of smartphones and the rapid development of the mobile Internet, the amount of user-generated content such as blogs is increasing daily. Valuable information, such as bloggers’ opinions, feelings, and attitudes, is often part of this content. Particularly in the context of an emergency, this information should also be used to facilitate decision making. The current blog recommendation model examines primarily users’ interests or content similarity, whereas in this paper, the value of the blog is considered. The primary contribution of this paper is the proposal of an information-entropy-based blog recommendation model for finding valuable blogs to facilitate decision-making in an emergency context. A series of indicators for evaluating a blog in an emergency context are proposed. Using the method of information entropy, a blog recommendation model is developed. The model can also be used to forecast the value of emergency blogs in the future. The model has been tested and validated using crawled data from the Sina Blog, and the results have demonstrated that the proposed model can effectively determine the value of emergency-related blogs.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Emergency medicine (EM) residency programs can provide up to 20% of their planned didactic experiences asynchronously through the Individualized Interactive Instruction (III) initiative. Although blogs and podcasts provide potential material for III content, programs often struggle with identifying quality online content. Background To develop and implement a process to curate quality EM content on blogs and podcasts for resident education and III credit. Objective We developed the Approved Instructional Resources (AIR) Series on the Academic Life in Emergency Medicine website. Monthly, an editorial board identifies, peer reviews, and writes assessment questions for high-quality blog/podcast content. Eight educators rate each post using a standardized scoring instrument. Posts scoring ≥ 30 of 35 points are awarded an AIR badge and featured in the series. Enrolled residents can complete an assessment quiz for III credit. After 12 months of implementation, we report on program feasibility, enrollment rate, web analytics, and resident satisfaction scores. Methods As of June 2015, 65 EM residency programs are enrolled in the AIR Series, and 2140 AIR quizzes have been completed. A total of 96% (2064 of 2140) of participants agree or strongly agree that the activity would improve their clinical competency, 98% (2098 of 2140) plan to use the AIR Series for III credit, and 97% (2077 of 2140) plan to use it again in the future. Results The AIR Series is a national asynchronous EM curriculum featuring quality blogs and podcasts. It uses a national expert panel and novel scoring instrument to peer review web-based educational resources. Conclusions

In this column, Kimmelin Hull, community manager ofScience & Sensibility, Lamaze International’s research blog, reprints and discusses a recent blog post series by acclaimed writer, lecturer, doula, and normal birth advocate Penny Simkin. Examined here is the fruitful dialog that ensued—including testimonies from blog readers about their own experiences with traumatic birth and subsequent posttraumatic stress disorder. Hull further highlights the impact traumatic birth has not only on the birthing woman but also on the labor team—including doulas and childbirth educators—and the implied need for debriefing processes for birth workers. Succinct tools for assessing a laboring woman’s experience of pain versus suffering are offered by Simkin, along with Hull’s added suggestions for application during the labor and birth process.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Fine art education increases the quality and quantity of observations that medical students make in both art and clinical reports. However, there are few free and accessible resources that teach art and observational skills to healthcare learners and providers. CanadiEM.org, a medical education blog, developed a new series called Spot the Diagnosis! to address this gap. The goals of the Spot the Diagnosis! series are to: 1) use art to explain medical concepts, 2) tie medical concepts to visual art, 3) hone observational skills, and 4) expose healthcare providers to art. Methods: Each piece of art for the Spot the Diagnosis! Series is selected based upon the author’s art history knowledge, resources found using an online search, and/or suggestions made by other healthcare professionals. The accompanying blog post is researched and written by a medical student in a question-and-answer style and peer-reviewed by another medical student and physician. Posts are uploaded monthly to CanadiEM.org and accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Promotion occurs on site, via email, word-of-mouth, and social media. Viewership is tracked using Google Analytics (GA). A survey for readers is planned to assess who, how, and why readers use the series, but results were not available prior to abstract submission. Results: Six Spot the Diagnosis! posts have been published, each of which begins with the selection of a piece of fine arts that showcases a potential medical diagnosis and a blog post outlining an interpretation of the work informed by observations, historical reports, and medical evidence. Each was published as a blog post on a Saturday and added to a page containing a list of all posts in the broader Arts PRN section on CanadiEM. All contained a single piece of art as the focus, 6 ± 2 (median ± IQR) questions, 638 ± 250 words, and 6 ± 3 references. The answers to questions are hidden under drop-down formatting to allow viewers to arrive at their own answers first. In the first 30 days of publication, each post in the series was viewed 1582 ± 401 times. Conclusion: The Spot the Diagnosis! series is an online educational resource published on CanadiEM.org that aims to improve learners medical knowledge and observational skills by featuring fine arts pieces with relevant question-and-answer style posts. This series fills the gap between art and medicine and has been well received by CanadiEM viewers. We look forward to analyzing responses in our survey to further understand how, why, and who uses this new and innovative resource.

Abstract:
Individuals who consider themselves both scholars and fans represent not only a subculture of fandom but also a subculture of academia. These liminal figures seem suspicious to many of their colleagues, yet they are particularly positioned not only to be conduits to engaged learning for students but also to transform the academy by chipping away at the stereotypes that support the symbolic walls of the Ivory Tower. Because they are growing in number and gaining influence in academia, the scholar-fans of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Buffy) and other texts by creator Joss Whedon are one focus of this dissertation. Though Buffy academics or Whedon scholars are not the only ones of their kind (e.g., academic- fan communities have cropped up around The Simpsons, The Matrix Trilogy, and the Harry Potter franchise), they have produced more literature and are more organized than any other academic-fan community. I approach all of my subjects—fandom, academia, fan-scholars, and scholar-fans—from a multidisciplinary perspective, employing various methodologies, including autoethnography and narrative inquiry. Taking several viewpoints and using mixed methods best allows me to begin identifying and articulating a rhetoric of scholar-fandom. Ultimately, I claim that Whedon academic-fans employ a discourse marked by intimacy, community, reciprocity, and transformation. In other words, the rhetoric of Whedon scholar-fandom promotes an epistemology—a way of knowing—that in Parker J. Palmer’s paradigm is personal, communal, reciprocal, and transformational.

Song, Li. "Piecewise models for long memory time series." Paris 11, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010PA112128.

Full text
Abstract:
There are many studies on stationary processes exhibiting long range dependence (LRD) and on piecewise models involving structural changes. But the literature on structural breaks in LRD models is relatively sparse because structural changes and LRD are easily confused. Some works consider the case where only some coefficients in a LRD model are allowed to change. Ln this thesis, we consider a non-stationary LRD parametric model, namely the piecewise fractional autoregressive integrated moving-average (FARlMA) model. It is a pure structural change model inwhich the nurnber and the locations of break points (BPs) as well as the ARMA orders and the corresponding coefficients are allowed to change between two regimes. Two methods are proposed to estimate the parameters of this model. The first one is to optimize a criterion based on the minimum description length (MDL) principle. We show that this criterion outperforms the Bayesian information criterion and another MDL based criterion proposed in the literature. Since the search space is huge, the practical optimization of our criterion is a complicated task and we design an automatic methodology based on a genetic algorithm. The second method is designed for very long time series, like Internet traffic data. Ln such cases, the minimisation of the criterion based on MDL is very difficult. We propose a method based on the differences between parameter estimations of different blocks of data to fit the piecewise FARIMA model. This method consists in a four-step procedure. Ln Step 1, we fit a stationary FARiMA model to the whole series. Local parameter estimates are obtained in Step 2. Ln Step 3, for all possible BP numbers, we select the intervals with a BP, we estimate the BP locations and we estimate the parameters of each stationary block. Lastly, Step 4 concerns the selection of the BP number using the sum of squared residuals of the different fitted piecewise models. The effectiveness of the two methods proposed in the thesis is shown by simulations and applications to real data are considered

Abstract:
Developments in the field of data analytics provides a boost for small-sized factories. These factories are eager to take full advantage of the potential insights in the remotely collected data to minimise cost and maximise quality and profit. This project aims to process, cluster and visualise sensory data of a blow moulding machine in a plastic production factory. In collaboration with Lean Automation, we aim to develop a data visualisation solution to enable decision-makers in a plastic factory to improve their production process. We will investigate three different aspects of the solution: methods for processing multivariate time-series data, clustering approaches for the sensory-data cultivated, and visualisation techniques that maximises production process insights. We use a formative evaluation method to develop a solution that meets partners' requirements and best practices within the field. Through building the MTSI dashboard tool, we hope to answer questions on optimal techniques to represent, cluster and visualise multivariate time series data.

Aim  With this study we want to highlight and analyze the media spin of the PR campaign Miss Skinny by clarifying; a diffusion pattern which covers posts published by bloggers and journalists; a framing pattern from the first audited post to the last; how journalists are influenced by user generated content, and what consequences this may have for the news coverage. Method  We have conducted a studied of news posts and blog posts about the Swedish PR campaign Miss Skinny through content analysis, diffusion analysis and mapped direct links between blog posts and news posts. Main result  We found that a surprisingly large amount of news postings contained direct links to previous blog posts and that the former media serial no longer can be applied on today's modern media where journalists and other players come together on the converged media arena.

Abstract:
Working with an organization outside the public school system that was creating schoolyard gardens, I began to think about culture and cultivation inside and outside of schooling practices. The liveliness of the schoolyard gardens presented possibilities for enlivening educational discourses. With two participants I planted a container box schoolyard garden outside Lamoureux Hall, which houses the Faculty of Education. Utilizing aspects of place-based pedagogy, ecoliteracy, ecopedagogy and a metissage of a/r/tography, eco-art and writing as a method of inquiry, we tended the garden and dwelled upon ideas of nature, culture, and their intersection in a particular place. Our garden experiences left cyber footprints in virtual space as blog spots on a thesis blog site. The garden and the inquiry it generated outside,is brought back inside the education building as a Master's thesis. The garden grew in different and unpredictable ways due to intense construction on site, entwining the planter boxes with unseen variables.

Abstract:
The aim of this chapter is to examine Quaran-Teens 2020, a collaborative, digital, high school anthropology blog project during COVID-19 to demonstrate the effectiveness of auto-ethnography as a social science method, rhetorical writing style, and digital media pedagogy. The data are collected from a digital collaboration of two international baccalaureate classes at a private, international school in Memphis, Tennessee from March to June 2020. The content of the blog posts is analyzed in terms of critical self-inquiry, the social construction of society, storytelling, and ethical considerations. The findings show the effectiveness of auto-ethnography as a timely method of sociolinguistics data collection and persuasive rhetorical narrative approach, especially in times of digital media and cultural crisis, because it situates the individual both as a culturally produced and culture-producing person. The collaborative, digital nature of the project suggests ways to overcome the traditional limitations of ethnography and may be an effective strategy beyond the specific context.

Abstract:
In this descriptive study, the authors examined the online interactions of 45 teams of American International Schools (AIS) middle school students conducting science fair investigations with their distance mentors. Forty-five preservice teachers in a methods of teaching science college course served as “eMentors” using Blackboard™ and the 2.0 Learning Tools (wiki and blog) as their individually assigned teams planned their projects, shared outcomes of their experiments, and analyzed their data. eMentoring, as defined for this project, is the use of “computer conferencing systems to support a mentoring relationship when a face-to-face relationship would be impractical" (O'Neill, Wagner, &amp; Gomez, 1996, p. 39). The Near East South Asia Virtual Science Fair (NVSF) was designed to implement a science fair that encompasses hundreds of students, distance mentors, judges and teachers from eighteen American International Schools crossing geographic and geopolitical zones. Recognizing that today’s middle schoolers are growing up in a dynamic digital environment, students easily master the technologies of chat, instant messaging, blogs, and a “virtual” science fair using Internet technologies and digital tools.

Abstract:
As the third largest plastics processing technique, blow molding is one of the fastest growing industries worldwide. In this paper, a series of simulations on the parison formation in plastics extrusion blow molding were implemented using finite element method. Then a neural network model was developed based on the numerical results. The effects of the extrusion die inclination angle, die gap, and parison length on the parison swells can be predicted using the network model. The hybrid method combining the finite element and neural network can shorten the time for the predictions drastically.

Abstract:
This literature review draws from academic and grey literature, published largely as institutional reports and blogs. Most information found considered global impacts on employment and the labour market with the particular impact for the very high numbers of youth, women, migrant workers, and people with disabilities who are more likely to be employed in the informal sector. There has been a high negative impact on the informal sector and for precariously employed groups. The informal labour market is largest in low and middle-income countries and engages 2 billion workers (62 percent) of the global workforce (currently around 3.3 billion). Particularly in low- and middle-income countries, hard-hit sectors have a high proportion of workers in informal employment and workers with limited access to health services and social protection. Economic contractions are particularly challenging for micro, small, and medium enterprises to weather. Reduced working hours and staff reductions both increase worker poverty and hardship. Women, migrant workers, and youth form a major part of the workforce in the informal economy since they are more likely to work in these vulnerable, low-paying informal jobs where there are few protections, and they are not reached by government support measures. Young people have been affected in two ways as many have had their education interrupted; those in work these early years of employment (with its continued important learning on the job) have been interrupted or in some cases ended.
