Abstract:
This study is a rhetoric study about the modes of persuasion. The writer chose this topic for her study since she realizes that social media, especially blog, as found in Indonesian food blogs has become inseparable part of people's lives, especially blog, as well as many cafes and restaurants pop up in Jakarta, Indonesia. One thing that has caught the writer’s attention and curiosity to write on this particular topic is the way food bloggers persuade or attract their readers through their blogs. The aims of this study were to describe and to analyze the modes of persuasion commonly used in food bloggers post. The writer used Ethos, Pathos, Logos as her framework of analysis. For the sources of data, the writer used the blogs from three famous food bloggers in Jakarta, Indonesia. In this study, the writer herself acted as the instrument of the study. The writer chose and collected the data she needed. Then, she analyzed the data by using several tables. In the findings and discussion, the writer found that the food bloggers mostly use Pathos as their ways to persude the readers. The writer found several categorises in order to analyze the data based on the modes of persuasion such as: ethos consists of ethos through experiences, citing reliable sources, and demonstrating good will. Pathos consists of happy or satisfactory emotions, disappointed or unsatisfactory emotions, and communicate to the readers directly. Logos consists of facts or research, common-sense information, and value.

Abstract:
The blog is an increasingly familiar newcomer to the panoply of academic genres, offering researchers the opportunity to disseminate their work to new and wider audiences of experts and interested lay people. This digital medium, however, also brings challenges to writers in the form of a relatively unpredictable readership and the potential for immediate, public and potentially hostile criticism. To understand how academics in the social sciences respond to this novel rhetorical situation, we explore how they discoursally recontextualize in blogs the scientific information they have recently published in journal articles. Based on two corpora of 30 blog posts and 30 journal articles with the same authors and topics, we examine the ways researchers carefully reconstruct a different writer persona and relationship with their readers using stance and engagement model. In addition to supporting the view that the academic blog is a hybrid genre situated between academic and journalistic writing, we show how writers’ rhetorical choices help define different rhetorical contexts.

Abstract:
The appearance of the blogging platform created a new epistolary form for writers, with an inbuilt means of instant publication. Blog fiction could be serialized in real time, distributed between multiple online spaces and supplemented in commentary sections by other bloggers, real and fictional. Bad Influences (Segar, 2013a) was an experimental blog fiction making narrative use of these distributions in time, space and authorship (Walker Rettberg, 2004) as well as many other formal blog characteristics, including character avatars, interactive quizzes, aggregated feeds and blog design elements. As the story progressed, it became apparent that the processes of writing, reading and interacting, both within and outside of the text, created relations between the writer/creator and readers/participants who were an essential factor in the realization of the narrative. This led to the conclusion that blog fiction has a relational poetics. Coined by van Rooden (2011) after Bourriaud’s Relational Aesthetics (2002), this term is used here to describe a narrative process that relies on the human relations surrounding the text as much as on the text itself. Similarly relational forms of fiction are developing on the newer social networks, particularly Twitter, and transmediality holds yet more potential.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper looks at blogging by academics and argues that there is a niche role for an academic blog informed by principles of transformative learning. I begin by describing my experiences of blogging, first, as a reader while carrying out my own doctoral research, next, as a teacher introducing blogs to my students, then as a writer of my own journal blog. I suggest that transformative learning principles provide a frame of reference for understanding these experiences, in particular, by offering an idea of autonomy which puts subjective experience in social contexts. I then suggest that academics interested in transformative learning might learn a more engaging style of writing from bloggers.

Abstract:
This article presents a new approach towards teaching writing in English. The 21st century learners communicate basically in writing – writing text messages, instant messages, e-mail messages, etc. Every person wants to become and to be an accomplished writer, engaged learner and active participant in the present-day digital and interconnected world. Therefore, educators around the globe started talking about teaching digital writing and the need to change the teaching methods to meet the needs of their learners who are now called digital natives and to reduce the digital divide between teachers and students. That is why, the Web which provides a read-write environment nowadays can be used in the teaching-learning process, especially teaching writing skills. Such Web 2.0 tools as blogs and wikis are seen as providing a great learning space, motivating learners to write and successfully develop their digital writing skills. Besides, these tools provide them with real-life experience, intercultural communication, full participation and interaction not only with the teacher but with other students as well. This way students learn collaboratively which is very important if they want to learn to communicate in the present-day world.

Abstract:
We consider the phenomenon of network literature as an integral part of the modern literary process. We analyze such a phenomenon as a “writing blog” for its compliance with the basic requirements of the neterature: hypertextuality, interactivity, multimedia, informality and pro-cessuality of the text, as well as its semantic content. We conduct a study of the author’s blogs of D. Glukhovsky, E. Vodolazkin, E. Grishkovets, on the one hand, as methods of creating an artistic work, on the other, as ways of promoting the personality and creativity of the writer. Meanwhile, we identify not only the author’s peculiarities of blogging and communication of writers with the readership, but also the individual approaches of particular artistic individuals to the creation and popularization of their works (collective texts writing, combining an artistic work with multimedia content, etc.). We consider the issue of studying online literature in secondary educational institu-tions, and also develop ways to solve it. In particular, we propose an introduction to the educational process of research project work on topical issues of neterature, modern interactive teaching methods, as well as communication of schoolchildren with modern network writers in the format of forums and blogs.

Abstract Individuals with significant communication challenges need to communicate across many different venues. The author, from the perspective of an individual who uses AAC, discusses the strengths and weaknesses of both traditional AAC technologies and new mobile AAC technologies. He describes how access to AAC has allowed him to fulfill his dreams as a presenter and writer. He successfully manages a blog in San Francisco, writes grants, and has published his first book of poetry. Not one AAC device fits all of his communication needs; however, access to mobile technology tools has increased his flexibility across environments and given him another successful tool for communication.

In this column, Kimmelin Hull, community manager ofScience & Sensibility, Lamaze International’s research blog, reprints and discusses a recent blog post series by acclaimed writer, lecturer, doula, and normal birth advocate Penny Simkin. Examined here is the fruitful dialog that ensued—including testimonies from blog readers about their own experiences with traumatic birth and subsequent posttraumatic stress disorder. Hull further highlights the impact traumatic birth has not only on the birthing woman but also on the labor team—including doulas and childbirth educators—and the implied need for debriefing processes for birth workers. Succinct tools for assessing a laboring woman’s experience of pain versus suffering are offered by Simkin, along with Hull’s added suggestions for application during the labor and birth process.

Abstract:
We aim to reveal the transformations of the subject, structure, goals, and functions of autobiographical practice from diary to blog in Russia, its traditions and developments as a specific form of political and cultural networking. The proposed paper is based on the comparison of the diaries of Alexander Turgenev (1784-1845), historian and a journalist, and the blog of Boris Akunin (Georgii Chkhartishvili, 1956-), a writer, translator, historian. Turgenev’s diaries were published as “Chronicle of a Russian” in reputable literary magazines and political journals in the 1830-40s; they contributed to the formation of the intelligentsia and furthered cultural links between Russia and Europe. Akunin expresses his political views on his blog “Love of History”, posting autobiographical notes, travelogues, reflections, correspondence, and photographs. Juxtaposing the diary and blog promises to yield rich insights into Russian cultural practices over time.

Abstract:
Given the recurrence of the creation of characters as writers in Brazilian fiction works published since the 1990s, it was chosen the Daniel Galeras production as a case study. The character as writer was seen as a strategy to discuss issues concerning the contemporary literary scene. The research corpus was defined by a blog created during the Daniel Galeras stay in Buenos Aires, when he participated in Amores Expressos project, and the novel Cordilheira (2008), written as a result of that experience. By the trajectory of his career in a constant relation with the internet, it was analyzed the construction of writer as character in a blog hosted on the project site, in contrast to the figure of character as writer in the novel. For that, texts on autofiction, performance and authoring were used. Comparing the texts of both supports, similarities and differences in problematizations regarding the authors formation were found. Abstract:
This study focuses on three blogs kept by writers who have published novels in renowned publishing houses: François Bon, Éric Chevillard and Chloé Delaume. This new writing practice raises the question of whether literature can be transferred to the Internet: does this medium admit literary activity or, on the contrary, does it represent a limit or even a threat to the future of literature? By using theoretical tools from the field of discourse analysis, the study discusses theoretical problems related to the impact of digital media on the perception of genres and on the notion of authorship. First, the study shows that the web does not allow the emergence of literary works, because this process is based on the editorial circuit and the hierarchy between textual categories. The existence of authors in the strongest meaning of the term is also compromised by the web, since the writers establish direct contact with their readers. The writer blog thus implies a dilemma: its success is necessarily to the detriment of a rewarding literary practice that the writer does not want to give up. This double bind is apparent in the way the writers use their blog: Bon wishes to open the literary field to the Internet, Chevillard is defending ”good” literature and Delaume intends to make her blog a performance

In this work, verbal interactions in a journalistic blog were analyzed to look for possible relations of control among the participants of the blog: from the journalist to the readers and vice versa, and among the readers themselves. Thirty-seven texts were analyzed; they were published by the journalist to his blog during three and a half days, in the period immediately after the TAM airplane accident that took place in Sao Paulo on July, 17, 2007, as well as 1673 comments on these texts. Comments were classified according to their target - whether they were addressed to the journalist or to other readers, or had no specific target. These comments were also classified into categories such as agreement, disagreement and contribution. The results suggest: 1) the existence of mutual control between the journalist and his readers and among the readers themselves; 2) strong control of the topics relating to the accident on the writing of the participants of the blog; 3) differential control by the journalist on the readers writing behavior compared to the control among readers themselves; 4) strong influence of emotional variables on the writing behavior of the participants of the blog. In this respect, however, it was concluded that, although the data allow supposing the existence of these control relations, further studies are needed to clarify these supposed control relationships. The average delay between the publication of a text and the publication of its first comment was 2 hours and 37 minutes. This delay was less than an hour in 22 out of 37 texts analyzed. These data suggest that new technologies, such as Internet and its byproducts, such as blogs, can reduce extraordinarily the interval between the verbal behavior and its effects, while at the same time the reach of the product of that behavior can be dramatically increased. Thus, these new technologies should be considered in the planning of contingencies for the teaching and the study of the verbal behavior. In addition, the blogs, by allowing the inclusion of new individuals in the process of news production, may increase the possibilities of countercontrol by the reader over the press and cause the relationship between reader and press to become less distant<br>Em sua análise do comportamento verbal, Skinner destaca a importância de se considerar o comportamento do ouvinte para uma adequada compreensão do comportamento do falante e vice-versa.

Abstract:
Some of these transformations are related to the media that support writing and reading and to the ways their evolution affects the relations between writers, readers and texts. The main aim of the present study is to investigate the revolution brought about by the advent of electronic texts and of the use of the computer screen as textual support. In other words, this investigation concentrates on the changes that occurred in electronic reading and writing as well as in the forms of relationship between writers and readers by means of the computer screen. For such purpose, a recent textual tool available on the Internet, called blog, and its writers, called bloggers, were chosen. A qualitative research with 10 bloggers was conducted. An analysis of their discourse reveals that the decision of writing blogs is related to the freedom of expression, to the pleasure of writing and also to the possibility of interaction with their readers. Nevertheless, the same analysis revealed that, in spite of the fact that blogs make available a space for interaction between bloggers and their readers, such interaction is not yet fully materialized in blogs.

Abstract:
The motivation for this action-research came when I observed the existence of a gap between the content worked in the classes of English and the needs that emerged from the social reality experienced by the students, especially those attending state schools. Being an English teacher in regular schools, in the private and public sector, and in language schools institutes, I decided to deepen my studies on this issue, due to the fact that I noticed the great need of making changes in how I used to teacher English to my students. Therefore, this work was developed. The data analysis, and the students written productions in English, confirmed my initial assumption that school failure is related to the distance between the content taught at school and the students needs for living in society, primarily those ones related to the use of ICTs. For this study, Ive chosen the action-research methodology, since itd proved to be the most suitable one for the investigative purposes and feasible to the reality of the research matters. The use of this methodology led me to organize the analysis according to the cycles of the action-reflection-action research and to practice decision-making aiming at restructuring and redirecting goals throughout the development of this work, in a process that counted with the participation of the students. The investigation carried out in this action-research was developed based on a unit that integrated face-to-face activities carried out in the classroom to virtual ones, by means of the production and publication of texts in a blog. I believe that advances in the written production in English of the students were effective, as shown by the use of lexical-grammatical content used in the students productions. The role of the blog in this unit was to motivate and disinhibit the students, which contributed to their participation in the project. Through the activities proposed by the unit, the students had the opportunity to express themselves and to interact with peers. The collaborative construction of knowledge led to significant improvement in students written production in English. Decision-making carried out jointly, which is typical of action-research, increased students self-esteem, who began to feel more valued and able to learn. That said, I understand that the integration of ICTs in units that focus on activities that allow the interaction among the participants, on collaborative knowledge construction and on actual use of language is relevant. The results of this integration, as evidenced by this research, are significant advances not only in the level of linguistic knowledge of the language, but also in the development of autonomy and full training of the students.

Oscar, Svensson. "Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery : A corpus study of emoticons and abbreviations in English blogs written by Swedes." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för språk (SPR), 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-32137.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the use of emoticons and abbreviations in a mode of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC), blogs written by Swedish individuals in English. The aim of the study is to find out whether the emoticons and abbreviations used in these blogs are tailor-made by Swedish users or if they are the same as those found on the rest of the Internet. Another question asked by the study concerns if the use of emoticons and abbreviations differs depending on the gender and age group of the blogger. The method used is mainly concordance searches in a corpus, using the concordance program AntConc to find particular features of CMC. The data used for the study is a corpus of one hundred thousand words from blogs all over the Internet on a wide range of topics written by males and females of different age groups. The results of the investigation indicate that no local variations of abbreviations and emoticons exist within Swedish blogs written in English. While emoticons were used more frequently by males than their female counterparts, abbreviations were used mostly by female bloggers. It also appeared that bloggers aged thirty or younger use emoticons and abbreviations most frequently, suggesting that their use was influenced quite significantly by the age of the blogger. The conclusion drawn from this is that if any eventual local Swedish variations of emoticons and abbreviations, they exist in Swedish blogs and not English ones, as those discovered in this study do not deviate from what already exist in blogs written by native speakers of English.

Abstract:
Climate science and the effective public communication of it havebecome increasingly vital in a world that is changing atan unprecedentedrate. For many scientists and journalists, the Internet hasgrown to be the preferred medium of climate science communication. As the issues thattextsabout climate changedeal with are ratherpressing, it is crucial that thescientific knowledge is recontextualized for non-expert audiencesin the mosteffectiveand engaging way. Science communicatorshave rhetorical strategiesof recontextualization and discursive strategies of newsworthinessat their disposal to achieve the desired science communicationand ultimately createan inclusive and engaging discourse with theirreaders. This qualitative study is a comparative analysis of two different typesof writers:scientists and journalists. The analysis of onlinetexts about climate change, written by these two types of writers, showsthat scientists and journalists employ many of the same strategies.Nonetheless, the findings reveal distinct differences in how extensively certain strategies are/ are not used.Generally, the scientists recontextualized the scientific knowledge in a more personalizedand inclusivemanner. The journalists, in turn, made use of more discursive strategies of newsworthiness. This qualitative comparative studyalsoprovides a novel analytical framework for further studies of the same kind.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractDigital literature on the Russian-language Internet includes a broad variety of phenomena, from online libraries to writers’ blogs, from hypertext to Internet memes. The chapter begins by clarifying the terms “digital literature” and “Runet,” drawing on a functional understanding of literature in the tradition of Russian Formalism. It embeds Runet literary studies into global contexts and gives an overview of essential phenomena (hypertext, fan fiction, blogging) and narratives. It analyzes local discourses, which, in turn, attempt to make sense of global communication technologies, for example, by conceptualizing digital self-publishing as samizdat, that is, the historical phenomenon of clandestine underground publication in the post-Stalin Soviet Union. The chapter concludes with an overview of research approaches and methods, both qualitative and quantitative, and of the challenges that future analysis will face.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the book shifts to an analysis of the blogs as autofiction. This section deals with the paratext, that is information that is secondary to the main text, such: titles, choices of authorship (onymity, pseudonymity); the visual layout of the blog; interviews with the blog authors revealing their social backgrounds and their reasons to blog. The first part of the chapter focuses on the analysis of the paratext of the six blogs chosen as case studies: Wassiʿ Khayalak (Widen Your Imagination) by Ahmed Naji; Ma Bada Li (What Seemed to Me) by Amr Ezzat; Tanatif Maʿat (Ma3t’s Bits and Pieces) by Mona Seif (Munā Sayf); Yawmiyyat Imraʾa Mithliyya (Diary of a Gay Woman) by the writer who uses the pseudonym ‘Emraamethlya’; Al-Kanaba al-Hamra (The Red Sofa) by Bilal Husni (Bilāl Ḥusnī); and Yawmiyyat ʿAnis (Diary of a Spinster) by Abeer Soliman (ʿAbīr Sulaymān). In the second part, the data retrieved from these blogs are analysed together with the larger sample of blogs selected for this study.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the use of blogs for foreign and second language (L2) learning. It first outlines the suitability of blogs for language education and shows the value of blogging beyond technical features. Blogging has been described as a social activity (Nardi, Schiano &amp; Gumbrecht, 2004), which puts the writer in a central position. It will be argued that this centrality of the writer needs to be maintained in an educational context. The shift from teacher to learner orientation is seen as a significant change in language education. With reference to self-determination theory (Deci &amp; Ryan, 2002) the pedagogical principles that support L2 learner autonomy in a Web 2.0 learning environment will be discussed. Using blogs as L2 learner journals, it will be shown that Web 2.0 informs and supports language learning environments which foster L2 learner autonomy. The study indicates that blog-based reflective writing increases the learners’ sense of autonomy and that it has a positive impact on L2 learners’ perception of language awareness and development.

Abstract:
The social media in Nigeria provides an avenue where cultural practices are produced and consumed. One of such practices is joking. Specifically, a genre of jokes found in Nigeria social media space is Akpos jokes. The goal of this chapter is to explore the contextual beliefs in Akpos jokes and the pragmatic strategies employed by the writers of Akpos jokes. Akpos jokes are narratives about an imaginary character named Akpos. The study benefited from contextual belief theory (Odebunmi, 2006) while the data comprised jokes randomly picked from a blog and Facebook pages where Akpos jokes are published. The study revealed that the writer(s) of the Akpos jokes manipulate contextual beliefs like shared knowledge of language and shared knowledge of situations and events in Nigeria in order to generate humour. The writers also employ Implicature and stereotyping of the character of Akpos for humorous effects.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the ways in which the blog transforms adab and in particular the autobiographical genre in Arabic literature. Drawing on theories of autofiction, digital literature and Arabic print literature, it explores the innovative features of autofictional blogs resulting from the adoption of Internet technology. These are (1) interactivity, (2) the blurring of the author/main character, (3) the multimedia, open nature of the blog texts, and (4) their stylistic features. By depicting modes of interaction between readers and writers in the Egyptian blogosphere, the chapter shows how the autofictional blog transforms the practice of writing the self into an interactive game to be played among authors and readers, away from the gatekeepers of the literary institutions. This game requires the readers to be active participants in the interpretation of the text by discovering the blurred identity hidden behind the screen; to find their way in the open, multimedia text; and to contribute actively to the plot and style of the narrative. An aspect related to the interactivity of blogs is “audience gatekeeping”, that is that, in the absence of gatekeepers, readers may themselves take charge of this task, sometimes turning into “online haters”.

Abstract:
The paper presents a corpus study of the discourse features in the corpus of blogs. It is based on the data of Ru-RSTreebank annotated within the framework of the Rhetorical Structure theory [Mann, Thompson 1988]. The Ru-RSTreebank represents genres of news and popular science, scientific papers, and blogs texts. Blog subcorpus contains such topics as travelling, cosmetics, sports and health, psychology, IT and tech and some others. Blogs texts constitute a specific genre as they combine properties of written and spoken discourse. The purpose of the paper is to investigate discourse features of blogs in comparison with other genres. We analyze the variation in rhetoric relations distribution among genres, and single out the differences in discourse connectives usage. Furthermore, we check the distribution of other discourse features reported in different studies for spoken discourse and for social media in the Ru-RSTreebank blogs subcorpus. The general frequency analysis and the experiments on RandomForest classifier application to genre recognition have shown that the most important rhetoric relations specific to blogs are Evaluation and Contrast, that there is a tendency to use shorter discourse units and not to express the discourse relations overtly via subordinative conjunctions.

Abstract:
A paper written for and presented at the ASME 2010 Joint Rail Conference explored the science and methodology that BNSF Railway has taken to avoid wind-caused derailments.1 This paper further develops this topic with the approach Norfolk Southern Corp (NS) has taken. The foundational fluid flow dynamics and vehicle dynamics modeling and analysis are reviewed. The modeling included doublestack platforms loaded with empty boxes, trailer-on-flatcar (“piggyback”) equipment, high-cube boxcars, hoppers/coal gondolas, and multilevel (“autorack”) flatcars. The implementation of the modeling is outlined as a description of NS’ Speed Restriction System (SRS). The SRS uses real-time weather data and a lookup table of vehicle responses to provide the traffic controller (dispatcher) with recommended train speeds. Thoughts and suggestions on further development of a blowover risk reduction system are presented.

Abstract:
Acquisition of the customer data for product design selection using conventional customer survey techniques can be a time-consuming and costly undertaking. The aim of this paper is to overcome this limitation by using web based User-Generated Content (UGC) as an alternative to the conventional customer survey techniques. UGC refers to various public media contents created by web users including contents in online customer reviews, blogs, and social networking interactions. So far, there has not been any systematic effort in using UGC in design selection for a customer durable product. Using UGC in product design selection is not an easy task because UGC can be freely expressed and written by customers with little constraints, structure and bounds. As a result, UGC can contain a lot of noise, variability in content and even bias induced by the customers. In order to make use of UGC, this paper develops a systematic methodology for eliciting product attributes from UGC, constructing customer preference models and using these models in design selection. To demonstrate the proposed method, design selection of a smartphone using UGC is considered as an example. It is shown in the example that the proposed method can provide a reasonable estimation of customer preferences while being useful for product design selection.

In ASME Turbo Expo 2014: Turbine Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2014-25044.

Full text
Abstract:
Method of 1D calculation was developed. It is applicable to various ideal gases and their mixtures with regard to variability of their physical properties within wide temperature range. Four checking cross-sections were set for each vane/blade row: at the row inlet, in the row throat, at the row outlet, and downstream the row at the distance of the inter-row gap. Relations for the calculation of the flow outlet angle and maximum outlet velocity when the velocity in the throat reaches sonic values were a basis for a mathematical model. These relations considered the row geometry, tapering of a meridional streamline, a compressibility of gas, and losses variable along a channel. They made it possible to determine a gas mass flow at various flow outlet velocities. The row loss coefficient was determined from numerous test results. Losses in uncooled row were composed of a friction, edge, wave (due to incidence), and tip losses. A cascade density, the row height, the edge thickness, the airfoil surface roughness, inlet and outlet angles, Re, and the flow turbulence were also considered. Semi-empirical relations, describing an impact of a cooling air blow-off through a perforation in the airfoil and tip shrouds, trailing edge slot, at the shroud mating area, and in the gap downstream the row, were applied for the cooled turbine calculation. The influence of the blade cooling air pre-swirl on its temperature and turbine power was taken into account as well. Axial flows and the impact of a circumferential flow were defined when the radial gap flow for shroudless blades was calculated. For shrouded blades flows through linear and step labyrinths calculated. Influence of the rotation direction on the flow and gas heating in the labyrinth were also taken into account. Disk-gas losses are also calculated. Inputs were geometry of each row, a rotation velocity, a pressure, a temperature, a flow inlet angle, cooling air mass flow, temperature and pressure. Outputs could be any operation parameter of a turbine or a stage and flow parameters at checking cross-sections. Calculation covered whole range of turbine operation modes, including stage operation modes with energy consumption. A high-performance code was written on a basis of this method. It was verified against test results of some model turbines. A comparison showed quite good correspondence to tests both for turbine integral parameters and flow parameters at the checking cross-sections.
