Abstract:
Given the recurrence of the creation of characters as writers in Brazilian fiction works published since the 1990s, it was chosen the Daniel Galeras production as a case study. The character as writer was seen as a strategy to discuss issues concerning the contemporary literary scene. The research corpus was defined by a blog created during the Daniel Galeras stay in Buenos Aires, when he participated in Amores Expressos project, and the novel Cordilheira (2008), written as a result of that experience. By the trajectory of his career in a constant relation with the internet, it was analyzed the construction of writer as character in a blog hosted on the project site, in contrast to the figure of character as writer in the novel. For that, texts on autofiction, performance and authoring were used. Comparing the texts of both supports, similarities and differences in problematizations regarding the authors formation were found. The inclusion of excerpts from the blog in the novel was seen as a strategy that offers complexity of mirroring images and enhances the effects from the novel reading

Abstract:
This study focuses on three blogs kept by writers who have published novels in renowned publishing houses: François Bon, Éric Chevillard and Chloé Delaume. This new writing practice raises the question of whether literature can be transferred to the Internet: does this medium admit literary activity or, on the contrary, does it represent a limit or even a threat to the future of literature? By using theoretical tools from the field of discourse analysis, the study discusses theoretical problems related to the impact of digital media on the perception of genres and on the notion of authorship. First, the study shows that the web does not allow the emergence of literary works, because this process is based on the editorial circuit and the hierarchy between textual categories. The existence of authors in the strongest meaning of the term is also compromised by the web, since the writers establish direct contact with their readers. The writer blog thus implies a dilemma: its success is necessarily to the detriment of a rewarding literary practice that the writer does not want to give up. This double bind is apparent in the way the writers use their blog: Bon wishes to open the literary field to the Internet, Chevillard is defending ”good” literature and Delaume intends to make her blog a performance

In this work, verbal interactions in a journalistic blog were analyzed to look for possible relations of control among the participants of the blog: from the journalist to the readers and vice versa, and among the readers themselves. Thirty-seven texts were analyzed; they were published by the journalist to his blog during three and a half days, in the period immediately after the TAM airplane accident that took place in Sao Paulo on July, 17, 2007, as well as 1673 comments on these texts. Comments were classified according to their target - whether they were addressed to the journalist or to other readers, or had no specific target. These comments were also classified into categories such as agreement, disagreement and contribution. The results suggest: 1) the existence of mutual control between the journalist and his readers and among the readers themselves; 2) strong control of the topics relating to the accident on the writing of the participants of the blog; 3) differential control by the journalist on the readers writing behavior compared to the control among readers themselves; 4) strong influence of emotional variables on the writing behavior of the participants of the blog. In this respect, however, it was concluded that, although the data allow supposing the existence of these control relations, further studies are needed to clarify these supposed control relationships. The average delay between the publication of a text and the publication of its first comment was 2 hours and 37 minutes. This delay was less than an hour in 22 out of 37 texts analyzed. These data suggest that new technologies, such as Internet and its byproducts, such as blogs, can reduce extraordinarily the interval between the verbal behavior and its effects, while at the same time the reach of the product of that behavior can be dramatically increased. Thus, these new technologies should be considered in the planning of contingencies for the teaching and the study of the verbal behavior. In addition, the blogs, by allowing the inclusion of new individuals in the process of news production, may increase the possibilities of countercontrol by the reader over the press and cause the relationship between reader and press to become less distant

Abstract:
Western reading and writing has been going through considerable transformations throughout the times. Some of these transformations are related to the media that support writing and reading and to the ways their evolution affects the relations between writers, readers and texts. The main aim of the present study is to investigate the revolution brought about by the advent of electronic texts and of the use of the computer screen as textual support. In other words, this investigation concentrates on the changes that occurred in electronic reading and writing as well as in the forms of relationship between writers and readers by means of the computer screen. For such purpose, a recent textual tool available on the Internet, called blog, and its writers, called bloggers, were chosen. A qualitative research with 10 bloggers was conducted. An analysis of their discourse reveals that the decision of writing blogs is related to the freedom of expression, to the pleasure of writing and also to the possibility of interaction with their readers. Nevertheless, the same analysis revealed that, in spite of the fact that blogs make available a space for interaction between bloggers and their readers, such interaction is not yet fully materialized in blogs.

Abstract:
The motivation for this action-research came when I observed the existence of a gap between the content worked in the classes of English and the needs that emerged from the social reality experienced by the students, especially those attending state schools. Being an English teacher in regular schools, in the private and public sector, and in language schools institutes, I decided to deepen my studies on this issue, due to the fact that I noticed the great need of making changes in how I used to teacher English to my students. Therefore, this work was developed. The data analysis, and the students written productions in English, confirmed my initial assumption that school failure is related to the distance between the content taught at school and the students needs for living in society, primarily those ones related to the use of ICTs. For this study, Ive chosen the action-research methodology, since itd proved to be the most suitable one for the investigative purposes and feasible to the reality of the research matters. The use of this methodology led me to organize the analysis according to the cycles of the action-reflection-action research and to practice decision-making aiming at restructuring and redirecting goals throughout the development of this work, in a process that counted with the participation of the students. The investigation carried out in this action-research was developed based on a unit that integrated face-to-face activities carried out in the classroom to virtual ones, by means of the production and publication of texts in a blog. I believe that advances in the written production in English of the students were effective, as shown by the use of lexical-grammatical content used in the students productions. The role of the blog in this unit was to motivate and disinhibit the students, which contributed to their participation in the project. Through the activities proposed by the unit, the students had the opportunity to express themselves and to interact with peers. The collaborative construction of knowledge led to significant improvement in students written production in English. Decision-making carried out jointly, which is typical of action-research, increased students self-esteem, who began to feel more valued and able to learn. That said, I understand that the integration of ICTs in units that focus on activities that allow the interaction among the participants, on collaborative knowledge construction and on actual use of language is relevant. The results of this integration, as evidenced by this research, are significant advances not only in the level of linguistic knowledge of the language, but also in the development of autonomy and full training of the students.

Abstract:
This study investigates the use of emoticons and abbreviations in a mode of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC), blogs written by Swedish individuals in English. The aim of the study is to find out whether the emoticons and abbreviations used in these blogs are tailor-made by Swedish users or if they are the same as those found on the rest of the Internet. Another question asked by the study concerns if the use of emoticons and abbreviations differs depending on the gender and age group of the blogger. The method used is mainly concordance searches in a corpus, using the concordance program AntConc to find particular features of CMC. The data used for the study is a corpus of one hundred thousand words from blogs all over the Internet on a wide range of topics written by males and females of different age groups. The results of the investigation indicate that no local variations of abbreviations and emoticons exist within Swedish blogs written in English. While emoticons were used more frequently by males than their female counterparts, abbreviations were used mostly by female bloggers. It also appeared that bloggers aged thirty or younger use emoticons and abbreviations most frequently, suggesting that their use was influenced quite significantly by the age of the blogger. The conclusion drawn from this is that if any eventual local Swedish variations of emoticons and abbreviations, they exist in Swedish blogs and not English ones, as those discovered in this study do not deviate from what already exist in blogs written by native speakers of English.

Abstract:
Climate science and the effective public communication of it havebecome increasingly vital in a world that is changing atan unprecedentedrate. For many scientists and journalists, the Internet hasgrown to be the preferred medium of climate science communication. As the issues thattextsabout climate changedeal with are ratherpressing, it is crucial that thescientific knowledge is recontextualized for non-expert audiencesin the mosteffectiveand engaging way. Science communicatorshave rhetorical strategiesof recontextualization and discursive strategies of newsworthinessat their disposal to achieve the desired science communicationand ultimately createan inclusive and engaging discourse with theirreaders. This qualitative study is a comparative analysis of two different typesof writers:scientists and journalists. The analysis of onlinetexts about climate change, written by these two types of writers, showsthat scientists and journalists employ many of the same strategies.Nonetheless, the findings reveal distinct differences in how extensively certain strategies are/ are not used.Generally, the scientists recontextualized the scientific knowledge in a more personalizedand inclusivemanner. The journalists, in turn, made use of more discursive strategies of newsworthiness. This qualitative comparative studyalsoprovides a novel analytical framework for further studies of the same kind.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate how the modal auxiliaries will and shall and the semi-modal BE going to are used to express futurity by individuals whose first language is Swedish. The study is corpus based, and the corpora used in this study consist of Swedish newspapers in English (SWENC) and material from blogs which are written in English by Swedes (BESC). These are compared with the press sub-corpora in F-LOB (the Freiburg-LOB Corpus of British English) and Frown (the Freiburg-Brown corpus of American English), which represent British and American varieties of English. The method is quantitative and the results are mainly presented in frequencies. The results show that all of the modals are used in SWENC and BESC. The core modal will is the most frequently used modal in all of the corpora and sub-corpora. The semi-modal BE going to is most frequently used in BESC and the second core modal shall is most frequent in SWENC. However, qualitative examination of shall revealed that the writers in SWENC use the modal differently from how it is used in F-LOB Press. This study shows evidence of variation in use of the modals which express futurity. The fact that the semi-modal BE going to exists in the Swedish material indicates that the process of grammaticalization continues in the Swedish form of English.

Abstract:
Working with an organization outside the public school system that was creating schoolyard gardens, I began to think about culture and cultivation inside and outside of schooling practices. The liveliness of the schoolyard gardens presented possibilities for enlivening educational discourses. With two participants I planted a container box schoolyard garden outside Lamoureux Hall, which houses the Faculty of Education. Utilizing aspects of place-based pedagogy, ecoliteracy, ecopedagogy and a metissage of a/r/tography, eco-art and writing as a method of inquiry, we tended the garden and dwelled upon ideas of nature, culture, and their intersection in a particular place. Our garden experiences left cyber footprints in virtual space as blog spots on a thesis blog site. The garden and the inquiry it generated outside,is brought back inside the education building as a Master's thesis. The garden grew in different and unpredictable ways due to intense construction on site, entwining the planter boxes with unseen variables.

Abstract:
101
The aim of this study is to examine the various motherhood experiences of modern middle-class mothers in Taiwan and the social mechanism behind them? This study conducted textual analysis and ten books written by modern middle-class mother blog writers were analyzed. In addition to the contents of the books, the social and cultural implications are also discussed. The study found that, the majority of the mother writers hold a positive attitude towards the experiences of motherhood and shape their own sense of identity within these experiences. They establish a double identity of mother and daughter and further to develop their subjectivity under the existing social norms. These mother blog writers construct a motherhood discourse with the characteristics of female self-awareness and woman-centered. In doing so, they resist the taken-for-granted ideology of motherhood. Furthermore, these mother writers show their autonomy and agency by discovering the gender and power relations within the family, declaring being their selves and taking an action of writing.

Abstract:
Despite the recent growth of social media, rhetorical theory which addresses authorship in this realm has been slow to develop. Static terms such as "reader," "writer," and "author" are often used to refer to the roles occupied by users in social media, although these terms are insufficient to describe the dynamic rhetorical exchange which occurs there. The goal of this dissertation is to use rhetorical theory to develop an updated terminology to describe the model(s) adopted by creators of social media content. First, past models of authorship are surveyed to locate rhetorical precedents for the model(s) that currently exists in social media. After comparing potential historical precedents to the overall process of content creation in social media, the term "participant" is adopted to describe the roles which users assume when creating digital content. Although "participant" initially appears to be an appropriate term, this notion is complicated when one considers the asymmetrical roles adopted on a smaller scale in genres such as social networking and blogs. To determine if the "participant" model is still applicable in such cases, an examination of authorship as it occurs in the genre of women's personal blogs is conducted. An analysis of the terms that bloggers use to refer to themselves as writers reveals that bloggers situate themselves in roles through which they claim to speak for a group such as storyteller and truth-teller. Subsequent examination of the interactions between bloggers and other participants reveals that bloggers negotiate authority with readers in a variety of ways. By using such strategies, bloggers attempt to situate themselves as community members in a manner which aligns with the "participant" model. The participant role adopted in women's personal blogs helps this previously marginalized group to establish a public presence and may also serve as a precedent for models which could be adopted by learners in the composition classroom as they strive to break free from the author/student writer binary and to establish themselves as socially-engaged participants.

Abstract:
The subject of this memoir addresses the questions of the written word in a digital context. The digital allows a series of cultural, writing and reading practices that redefines a number of roles that the printed media had assigned during its five hundred years reign. This memoir proposes to define these practices and explores where they find themselves in rupture or in continuation with those that prevailed with the printed media. It will be discussed how these practices and the technology that permits them opens new spaces for writing and how these spaces differs from those that existed in printed culture. This memoir also tries to identify the new types of writers that emerge in these particular spaces. It shows under which conditions they write and how the digital media affects the word itself.

Abstract:
The traditional media were the first means of information the world has known. But with the development of new technologies and their centrality in the everyday life of the common citizen, the old media — print, radio and television — were forced to migrate to the cyberspace. That is the case regarding PÚBLICO, the newspaper where I did my internship. This phenomenon had two sides: a positive and negative one. More specifically, concerning the written press, there were more setbacks than advantages. If on one hand information on the Internet is accessible to everyone, at anytime, anywhere, and without any costs, and was therefore considered an asset, on the other hand it caused the loss of followers of the physical media, and the risk of its extinction. Not to mention that Web 2.0 has enabled the liberalization of publication, through which the common citizen has become not only a reader, but also an editor. As a result, many informative spaces began to appear, spaces which are not regulated by any ethical codes. Of all these, the blogs are, perhaps, the means used to disseminate information which compete the most with the media, generating controversy. Therefore, the second part of this report figures a case study on the groundbreaking case of these, entitled: The role of national blogs as a means to publicize cinema. The purpose of this study is to understand the relation between these specialized alternative spaces and the corresponding means of social communication, given the current period of crisis in traditional media.
