Abstract:
Background. The explosive growth of Hispanics in the US makes this population a significant and untapped source for blood donation. Methods. A cross-sectional study was performed to evaluate blood donation behaviors and demographics of foreign-born and US-born Hispanic donors between 2006 and 2009 in metropolitan Atlanta, GA, USA. Bivariate analyses and multivariate logistic regression were used to assess factors associated with foreign-born donors. Results. 5,119 foreign-born and 11,841 US-born Hispanics donated blood. Foreign-born Hispanic donors were more likely than US-born donors to be blood group O (57.6% versus 52.0%; P<.001) and more frequent donors (2.2 versus 2.0; P<.001). Cuban-born donors had the highest rates of return donation (63.2%). In contrast, Mexicans, the most prevalent subpopulation among foreign-born Hispanic donors (31.8%), had the lowest rates of return donation (42.0%). Conclusions. The heterogeneity found among Hispanic donors in this study is valuable for the design of recruitment strategies to increase blood donations.

Abstract:
AbstractIn vaginally delivered births (including a few cases where the mothers were under epidural anesthesia), differences between first and second born twins were compared according to presentation at delivery. Of twins with vertex/vertex presentation in 15 primipara cases and in 14 multipara cases, pO2 levels for the second born were significantly lower (both being p < 0.05) than for the first born. Of twins vertex/non-vertex presentation, the second born in 9 primipara cases showed significantly lower pH, pO2 and HCO3 levels (p<0.05). Also for multipara twins, the second born had significantly lower pH (p<0.05) and significantly higher pCO2 (p<0.05) values. Umbilical cord blood gas value findings indicate unfavourable conditions for second born twins.

Merideth, Richard Iztcoatl. "Perceived Racism and Blood Pressure in Foreign-Born Mexicans." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4157.

Abstract:
Studies have identified perceived racism as one type of social stress that is believed to contribute to hypertension, though no studies to date have examined the relationship between perceived racism and blood pressure among foreign-born Mexicans living in the United States (U.S.). In addition, studies have shown that acculturation may increase levels of perceived discrimination among foreign-born Mexicans living in the U.S. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived racism and ambulatory blood pressure among a convenience sample of 332 foreign-born Mexicans living in Utah County, Utah controlling for age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and acculturation. This was done through the use of several multiple regression analyses using archival data collected at Brigham Young University. The Perceived Ethnic Discrimination Questionnaire—Community Version (Brief PEDQ—CV) was used to measure perceived racism. The Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans (ARSMA-II) was used to measure both language and general acculturation. Four blood pressure variables, including waking systolic blood pressure (WSBP), waking diastolic blood pressure (WDBP), sleeping systolic blood pressure (SSBP), and sleeping diastolic blood pressure (SDBP) were used as outcome variables in the regression analyses. A relationship between perceived racism and any of the ambulatory blood pressure variables used in this study was not found. In addition, English-language acculturation was not found to moderate the relationship between perceived racism and blood pressure in the sample of first generation Mexicans participating in this study. A moderating effect of general acculturation on the relationship between perceived racism and blood pressure was found when controlling for age, BMI, and gender, though this moderating effect disappeared when WDBP was included in the regression model. Implications of findings, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.

Jensen, Bryan J. "Communal and Exchange Relationships in Marriage and Their Effects on Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Caucasians and Foreign-born Mexican Americans." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3021.

Full text
Abstract:
Research shows Mexican Americans typically have better cardiovascular health than European Americans, despite being relatively economically disadvantaged. Given research indicating the importance of relationship quality on one's health, the present study examined whether certain relationship orientations (e.g. communal or exchange) were more prevalent in different ethnic groups and if these orientations could help explain this Hispanic Paradox. 582 adults were recruited from the community. Participants were primarily European American (40%) and foreign-born Mexican Americans (55%). A cross-sectional designed was used where participants wore 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) monitors and completed self-report measures of relationship satisfaction and relationship orientation. Results indicated that, contrary to predictions, European Americans tended to have more of a communal relationship orientation compared to foreign-born Mexican Americans. As expected however, communal orientation was predictive of higher relationship satisfaction, β = .29, SE = .07, p < .001, 95% CI [.15, .43], and while higher relationship satisfaction predicted lower systolic blood pressure, R2 = .02, β = -.16, SE = .07, p < .05, 95% CI [-.31, -.01], when ethnicity was added into the model this relationship was eliminated and foreign-born Mexican Americans had higher ABP compared to European Americans, β = 4.72, SE = 2.25, p < .05, 95% CI [.29, 9.14]. While there were these important differences, communal and exchange orientations had minimal direct or indirect effects on ABP. Even though communal and exchange relationship orientation don't seem to give us any more information to unravel the Hispanic Paradox, there are important ethnic differences in how we engage in marriage relationships and future research may consider other approaches to examine the health effects of these differences.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士
國立中興大學
畜產學系
93
The purpose of this experiment was to study the reproductive traits and blood constituents of female goat kids born in normal and out of the kidding season. Eight kids born in normal kidding season and 5 kids born out of the kidding season were used in this experiment. The signs of estrus were observed twice daily and blood samples were collected twice weekly. Packed cell volume, the concentration of serum total proteins, total lipids and progesterone were determined. Serum protein bands were separated and quantified by agarose electrophoresis. The results showed that the mean age at the onset of puberty (first ovulation) of kids born in normal kidding season was 45.0 ± 2.7 weeks of age, and all of kids showed estrus signs at first ovulation. The mean age at the onset of puberty of kids born out of the kidding season was earlier than 16 weeks of age, and they showed first estrus at 17.6 ± 0.8 weeks of age. The ovarian cyclicity of kids born in normal kidding season started from November 10 to March 16. The mean date of the cessation of ovulation in kids born out of the kidding season was on March 29. The mean date of the first estrus started on November 10 and December 30 for kids born in normal and out of the kidding season, and the former was significantly earlier than the latter (P < 0.01). The mean date of the cessation of estrus was on March 8 and March 26 for kids born in normal and out of the kidding season, and there was no significantly difference between groups. The incidence of estrus only and silent ovulation of kids born in normal kidding season was 12.5 % and 0.00 %, respectively, in pubertal breeding season. The incidence of estrus only of kids born out of the kidding season was 29.63 %. The changes of packed cell volume during 28~52 weeks of age were irregular. The concentration of serum total proteins increased with age, whereas the concentration of serum total lipids increased first , and then decreased with age in both groups. It was concluded that the onset of puberty was not delayed in female goat kids born out of the kidding season (from August to October) in middle Taiwan.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on nothoi. A nothos was defined as the child of two parents who were not legally married, hence the term's standard translation: “bastard.” Nothos status can be divided into two distinct sub-statuses of illegitimate children: (i) a child born to a citizen and a noncitizen (also called a mētroxenos if the mother was the foreigner, as was most often the case); and (ii) a child born out of wedlock to two Athenian citizen parents. In the case of recognized illegitimate children born to two unmarried citizen parents, their pure Athenian blood presumably gave them a higher status than most mixed-blood mētroxenoi. Mixed-blood illegitimate children were likely stigmatized for their impure ancestry, especially in the fourth century, when the ideology of the pureblooded Athenian became most prominent and most strongly policed.

Abstract:
As the nation wrestled with emancipation in 1863, many Americans called for a reassessment of racism in light of scripture. Americans looked to various texts, including the Curse of Ham, but especially Paul’s statement, God “hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation” (Acts 17:26). This was a major proof text in a hotly contested debate over human origins. One view—represented by Swiss-born Harvard professor Louis Agassiz—supported “polygenism,” the belief that different races originated at different times and places. Others argued for “monogenesis,” claiming all races had a common origin and shared a common humanity. Paul’s “one blood” statement became a proof text for monogenesis and a key argument against slavery. Americans often cited it alongside the Declaration of Independence and the golden rule.

Abstract:
The blood supply for the brain is born by four arteries, that is, two internal carotid arteries and two vertebral arteries. They are mutually connected at the cerebral base, and form a closed arterial circle, called the circle of Willis, so that the safety of the brain blood supply is increased. However their anastomoses show a very wide variety of atypism. If some of anastomses are very thin, or even do not exist, the safety of the blood supply is not secured. This is particularly important when some diseases such as cerebral thrombosis occurs and the blood flow supply stops unilaterally. Redistribution of the blood supply in such cases is thought to be strongly affected by geometrical configuration of the anastomoses. It is also known that cerebral aneurysms, which may induce serious cerebrovascular diseases, preferentially occur at the circle of Willis. Complex blood flow pattern has been suspected of having an influence on this preference. This is again dependent on complex geometry of the circle.

Abstract:
The aim of this study has been to investigate the reliability of platelet aggregation in whole blood in some clinical conditions associated to thromboembolic complications.18 healthy subjects, 15 patients affected by ischemic heart disease (IHD) and 15 patients affected by insulin independent diabetes, free of vascular complications, were studied. Collagen induced (2.5 mg/L f.c.) platelet aggregation was evaluated both in whole blood (WB) by using impedance whole blood aggregometer (Chrono-Log) and in platelet rich plasma (PRP) by Born aggregometer. Aggregation was significantly higher in whole blood than in PRP in all the groups investigated (p < 0.01). No significant difference was found in PRP aggregation among the three groups, whereas WB aggregation was significantly higher in the two patient groups (IHD 79.5 + 14.2%, Diabetes 81.3 + 17.6%) than in controls (64.8 ± 14.1%) (p < 0.01 for both comparisons). No relationship was found between WB aggregation and Hct or platelet number in any of the groups studied. A slight relationship was found between megathrombocyte count and WE aggregation values (r=0.31, p < 0.05).Collagen platelet aggregation in WB seems to be provided with higher sensibility than PRP aggregation in detecting hyper-aggregability, probably because it does not imply the selection of platelet populations with loss of larger platelets and of other blood cells.

Abstract:
Congenital cardiovascular defects are the leading cause of death among live births [1]. These defects involve the interior walls of the heart, valves, arteries, and veins and change the normal flow of blood through the heart and into the systemic system. Fortunately, several options exist for the more than 35,000 children born with congenital heart disease. Ventricular assist devices (VADs) currently hold the most promise for bridge-to-transplant treatment; however, a major problem for these devices is thrombus formation and deposition.

Several preliminary operations are required to buy time until the child’s blood vessels grow to sufficient size. Once the child reaches an age of 3–5 years, the blood vessels have grown enough for the Stage 3 Fontan operation, in which the superior and inferior vena cavae are coupled directly to the pulmonary arteries in a cruciform junction [2,3]. After this operation, the heart is only pumping blood to the systemic circulation. Only residual pressure in the systemic veins and intrathoracic pressure change with respiration drive the flow into the lungs [5]. This circulation decreases the load on the heart, allowing the patients to survive with normal blood oxygen levels. This circulation decreases the load on the heart, allowing the patients to survive into their 20s and 30s. An aim of this study is to develop an experimental model of the Fontan circulation that can be readily adapted to simulate patient specific anatomies so as to assist in potential surgical decisions. Of interest is the study of chronic venous hypertension, a result of the Fontan circulation having no heart “vacuum” at the end of the vena cavae; it is known to cause liver failure. We also intend to examine the hypothesis of Hsia et al. [6] that decreasing sub-diaphragmatic venous flow reversal will improve functional outcome of the Fontan.
