Hemoglobin is an oxygen binding protein in erythrocytes. Hemoglobin is composed of four polypeptide chains. During the fetal stage the type of hemoglobin called fetal hemoglobin (HbF) dominates. Many attempts have been made to quantify cardiac output using both invasive and non-invasive techniques. The results have generally been poorly reproducible and comparisons of techniques have yielded highly variable values. A single breath inert gas method was used in the study, since it offers several advantages over previous methods, chiefly its speed of measurement, and the controlled manner in which it is performed. Polymorphisms of platelet glycoproteins (GPs) are frequently targets for anti-platelet antibodies. At least 19 antigenic polymorphisms have been identified on platelet GPs. Antibodies against the HPA-lb polymorphism (a Leu to Pro switch at amino acid residue 33 of the IIIa sub-unit of GP IIb/Illa) have been attributed to as much as 90% of all cases of neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenic purpura and posttransfusion purpura in caucasians. This thesis developed an advanced computational model to investigate the motion and deformation properties of red blood cells in capillaries. The novel model is based on the meshfree particle methods and is capable of modelling the large deformation of red blood cells moving through blood vessels. The possibilities of the method of computerized capillaroscopy for studying the structure of the capillaries of the skin of the hands after exposure to temperature are considered. With local frostbite, there is a lack of sensitivity and insufficient expression of blood vessels, their blanching caused by constriction. A non-invasive, in vitro method of estimating mean pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) was developed. This information was obtained by establishing a relationship between the pneumatic right drive pressure (RDP) and PAP waveforms.
