Many patients with chronic kidney disease eventually become anaemic. Generally, haemodialysis patients tend to have more severe anaemia than those receiving peritoneal dialysis, probably because of greater blood loss and haemolysis in haemodialysis patients and better removal of uncharacterized ‘middle molecules’ inhibitory to erythropoiesis in peritoneal dialysis patients. Haemodialysis generally improves the fluid environment of the erythrocytes by partial correction of the electrolyte disequilibrium, the acid-base status and the removal of a number of uremic substances that may possibly dis

Nitrous oxide is 30 times more soluble than nitrogen in blood, and it can diffuse to closed spaces and can lead to detrimental effects. Abstract:
Mycotoxins are agents with different and complex chemical structures, with toxic effects for humans and animals. They can be present in feed and food, although in very small quantities, mycotoxins have a negative effect on the health of animals and people. Ochratoxins are mycotoxins intensively studied in recent years due to their toxicity on the animal and human body; these toxins show nephrotoxic, immunotoxic and myelotoxic, neurotoxic and carcinogenic effects. Thirty male rats of the Sprague- Dawley breed were divided into 3 groups who received through feed doses of of ochratoxin A (OTA): 0

Abstract:
The piezoelectric effect is well known and used for vibration energy harvesting applications. The pyroelectric effect is also used to generate electrical power if there is an environment that has cyclic temperature changes. In this study, increasing generated electrical power by use of a combination of piezoelectric and pyroelectric effects is investigated. As a sample case it is aimed to utilize this piezoelectric and pyroelectric effect for a new sensor application. The results of the tests indicate that energy from vibrations and heat can have a significant interaction depending on the freq

The femoropopliteal (FP) artery is a branch of the femoral artery, the main artery in the upper leg, providing blood to all muscles and superficial tissues in the thigh. It is the largest of the femoral artery branches, composed of the superficial femoral artery (SFA) in the proximal region and popliteal artery (PA) in the distal region which runs below the knee. It is characterised by its tortuous geometry, associating a high atherosclerotic plaque burden with it. However, due to the dynamic forces of the SFA and PA, peripheral stents are reported to have the highest failure rates, predominan

Abstract:
This research project was performed in context of the apparent probiotic effect of selected lactic acid bacteria (LAB) silage inoculants on the performance of ruminants (improved feed intake, faster live-weight gain, higher milk yields and improved feed efficiency). The overall objective was to find out how LAB affect ruminant performance. The project included several “chapters” as follows: 1. The effect of LAB silage inoculants on the survival of detrimental bacteria in rumen fluid, in vitro study (Weinberg et al., The Volcani Center). Abstract:
The National Park Service (NPS) is charged with maintaining natural riverine resources and processes in its parks along the Yampa River and downstream along the Green River. This mission requires information on how proposed water withdrawals would affect resources. We present a methodology that quantifies the impact on natural riverine and riparian features of Dinosaur National Monument based on alternative withdrawals that vary in volume and timing. This methodology uses a reverse quantification and develops tools to enable the NPS to ensure that if withdrawals must occur, the adverse impacts

T-2 toxin, a toxic product belongs to the trichothecene mycotoxins, attracts major interest because of its severe detrimental effects on the health of human and farm animals. The occurrence of trichothecenes contamination is global and they are very resistant to physical or chemical detoxification techniques. Trichothecenes are absorbed in the small intestine into the blood stream. The hypothesis of this project was to develop a protecting system using probiotic bacteria that will express trichothecene 3-O-acetyltransferase (Tri101) that convert T-2 to a less toxic intermediate to reduce inges

Health and wellbeing and susceptibility to disease are causally linked to food and nutrition intake, an observation that has informed dietary advice for centuries. However, physiological response to different food types varies greatly by individual, meaning that a “one size fits all” approach to nutritional advice may be inadequate to ensure optimum health outcomes. Personalised nutrition (PN) services, operating at the intersection between health advisory, the wellness sector, and the food system, seek to address this through individualised targeted dietary advice focused on achieving lasting

In Israel and in the U.S., Streptococcus iniae is responsible for considerable losses in various fish species. Poor understanding of its virulence factors and limited know-how-to of vaccine formulation and administration are the main reasons for the limited efficacy of vaccines. Our proposal included the following objectives: (i) construction of host-pathogen interaction models; (ii) characterization of virulence factors and immunodominant antigens, with assessment of their relative importance
