The transfusion of blood products may be required in the pre- and post-operative periods. However, there are inherent risks associated with blood transfusion, and there is not an unlimited supply of blood donations available. When a patient is anaemic, red blood cells should be transfused to maintain the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood.
