Abstract:
Major challenges in the management of blood supply chain are related to the shortage and wastage of the blood products. Given the perishability characteristics of blood which can be stored up to a limited number of days, if hospitals and blood centers keep an excessive number of blood units on inventory, wastages may occur. On the other hand, if sufficient number of blood units are not stored on inventory, shortages of this resource may cause the cancellations of important activities and increase the fatality rates at hospitals. This thesis is concerned with the detection of viruses in blood and blood products, with the general aim of improving the safety of blood donations and factor concentrates for clinical use. The prevention of virus transmission by blood and blood products is currently based on the screening of blood donations for virus specific antibody or antigen and by incorporation of virus inactivation procedures in the manufacturing process. In this study virus detection was by reverse transcription (RT) of virus RNA (where appropriate) followed by amplification of cDNA of virus DNA by the polymerase chain

The blood supply chain, starting from the donor until the blood is used to meet transfusion demands of patients, is a multi-echelon and complex system. The perishable and lifesaving characteristics of blood products, such as red blood cells and platelets, as well as uncertainties in both supply and demand make it difficult to maintain a balance between shortage and wastage due to expiry. An effective blood supply chain should be able to meet the demand while at the same time reducing wastage and total operational cost. In order to be cost effective, the related organizations have to decide how

Abstract Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in developed countries. In patients with complex CAD, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) remains the preferred treatment as it can provide long-lasting results. However, CABG carries a significant risk of excessive perioperative bleeding and other complications, which may deteriorate the prognosis. Transfusion of blood products is generally used to compensate blood loss. However, both bleeding and blood transfusions have been shown to be associated with an adverse outcome. Abstract:
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a common manifestation of stenoses and occlusions of the arteries of the lower extremities. Clinically, PAD is an important effect on functional ability, and quality of life because symptomatic patients are typically able to walk less than one to three blocks before rest is required. The double product break point (DPBP), also defined as the oxygen consumption at which the first portion of nonlinear increase in rate pressure product (systolic blood pressure X heart rate) begins has been identified to determine the anaerobic threshold during exercise test. Traditional inventory models for blood products were based on the situation of hospital’s needs. This thesis considers the perspective of the blood collection center as well as the characters of blood supply chain, such as, short life-cycle, perishable, and rule of first-in-first-out. Three life-cycle cost formulas of blood products under different demand-supply scenarios are proposed in this study. In simulation model, the demand and supply are designed into the followi

BACKGROUND: Recently, South African health system has been experiencing shortage of blood and blood products due to increase in demand for conditions (such as road accident injuries, assaults, surgery and complications of labour) and decrease in supply due to conditions such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Hepatitis B. This resulted in difficulty in managing conditions such as obstetric haemorrhages which is one of the commonest causes of maternal mortality and morbidity in South Africa. It was therefore important to monitor the use of these products in South African hospitals to av

Therefore, a delivery vessel and phase change materials must have excellent thermal insulation properties that the required time for storage temperature of blood products while delivery, can be extended with a small amount of phase change materials. The purpose of this study was to look into the thermal properties of phase cha
