The current work is an intellectual history of how blood permeated early modern Spaniards' conceptions of morality and purity. This paper examines Spanish intellectuals' references to blood in their medical, theological, demonological, and historical works. Through these excerpts, this thesis demonstrates how this language of blood played a role in buttressing the church's conception of good morals. This, in turn, will show that blood was used as a way to persecute Jews and Muslims, and ultimately define the early modern Spanish identity.

Chapter 6 analyzes the workings of memory and metaphor as Jewish and Christian civilizational tropes. It focuses on the role of blood in both traditions to explicate the different understandings of past, present, and future within Judaism and Christianity. The analysis ranges from ancient to modern times and from religiously constituted communities to membership in the modern nation-state. The chapter ends with an exploration of the particular “double bind” aspect of Judeo-Christian relations that has plagued both right from their inception. This double bind is just one example of a much broader problem of living with differences that cannot be simply reconciled, but which we can learn to accept by recognizing the relevance of the grounds of memory, mimesis, and metaphor.

This chapter assesses The Chronicle of Morea, which contains some of the most intriguing aspects of the colonial encounter of the Fourth Crusade. The Chronicles of Morea provides a series of discursive juxtapositions between the Franks and the Greeks. Although it has a very complicated textual history, The Chronicles of Morea tells the multigenerational story of the Frankish Villehardouin dynasty, which ruled the Peloponnese in the centuries after the conquest of 1204. This text reveals not only the way that colonizer and colonized eventually came to work alongside one another but also the way that the prolonged encounter between Greeks and Franks transformed the means by which both understood their sense of identity and religious commitments. It is precisely because of these aspects of this text that the insights of postcolonial analysis help one to understand the many complexities that they convey.

In colonial North America brutal military force was applied to the subjection and conversion of Native Americans to Christianity. In the United States, that offense continued, joined with condemnations of Indian religious practice as savagery, or as no religion at all. The violence was legitimated by appeals to Christian scripture in which genocide was commanded by God. Chapter 4 explains the endurance and permutation of the ritual murder accusation in the Soviet landscape of the interwar years. The occurrence of the blood libel epitomizes some aspects of the nature of the Bolshevik experiment, and becomes an indicator of the limits (and triumphs) of the Soviet attempt to modernize society. Ritual murder accusations grew out of the power of slander and denunciatory frenzy that enveloped Soviet society. But the accusation also resulted from the encounter between Jews and peasants in the context of a system that violently promoted urbanization and new socioeconomic structures. The intensity of the anti-religious propaganda inadvertently played a role in maintaining this powerful anti-Jewish myth, as the attack on circumcision and kosher slaughtering reinforced anti-Jewish stereotypes. Finally, the transformation of ritual murder echoes the process of Jewish women’s empowerment: only in Soviet society could Jewish women become perpetrators of ritual murder.
