Montalvo, Edward. "Orange Blossoms." Honors in the Major Thesis, University of Central Florida, 2014. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETH/id/1626.

Abstract:
I miss the smell of orange blossoms, which used to flood the countryside. But as a city grows, the land surrounding it dies. You cannot roll down your windows anymore and smell the sweet scent dancing off the buds. You will however find impressive theme parks, factory-style chain stores and restaurants. If you look close enough, you'll also see disgruntled souls of a once naturally spectacular culture of people. Laid back like the sands of Florida's coast. But now there are bills, traffic, and IKEA. This collection of essays is an attempt to escape such an experience. To explain such an existence, and to explore an eschewal from the inevitable, retail therapy. Xanthomonas axonopodis, often known as citrus cankers, is a bacterial disease affecting most citrus species. Dead tissue forms, then slowly grows, and consumes, then kills the fruits of labor. Grapefruits are the most susceptible to the disease. There was an outbreak from 1910, to 1931. Another from 1986 to 1994, and rumors sprang less than a year later stating the canker was back. To solve most outbreaks, famers and officials just burn the trees to complete, and utter ash. In 2006, the USDA stated eradication of the disease was impossible. If this sounds like cancer, the trust me, you’re not crazy. Florida is known for its beaches, hospitality, and it’s citrus.
B.A.
Bachelors
English
Arts and Humanities

Abstract:
This study is about the relationship between violence, memory and identity. It focuses on a community of relocated internally displaced people in Guatemala and analyses the way they redefined their identity in the aftermath of the conflict. It argues that resistance to State sponsored violence during the period of internal displacement shaped the emergence of a new post conflict community identity, influenced by both national and global discourses of rights. The stories of violence and resistance established the basis for a collective notion of selfto emerge. The process of resistance to the State during the period of displacement cemented relationships of trust and provided people from the town of Prima vera with a sense of ontological security reinforced in people's narratives of the past. This study is based on sociological field work carried out between November 1998 and September 1999 in the town of Prima vera that was created in 1996 by formerly displaced people in the north eastern region of Guatemala known as the Ixcan.

Rankinen, K. (Karoliina). "Under the cherry trees:the symbolism of cherry blossoms during hanami in Japan." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2018. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201806142565.

Full text
Abstract:
Cherry blossom as a symbol has had a central role in Japanese culture long before the written time. Due to its long history, cherry blossoms’ symbolism is multilayered and -vocal. In this thesis, I study cherry blossom’s symbolism through hanami ritual in todays Japan. As there has been hardly any scientific studies regarding the cherry blossoms in English, aside from Emiko Ohnuki-Tierney (2002), the research material is largely based on Japanese studies and my own material. The research material has been collected using ethnographic fieldwork’s methods by conducting semi-structured interviews in Japanese and participant observation. In theory part I’ve used many classics, including Clifford Geertz (1973), Victor Turner (1967) and Arnold van Gennep (1960). In cherry blossoms’ symbolism main categories center around the terms “time” and “place”, the flowers symbolizing changes and identity. Cherry trees are native trees, which is why they’re strongly connected to Japanese identity, although not as strongly as in the past. At the areas known for their blossoms, like Hirosaki and Himeji, cherry blossoms are strongly part of the local identity, which is used for tourism. Cherry blossom’s symbolism is very complex, often even contradictory, symbolizing things like beginning and end, life and death, joy and sorrow. The most important quality that cherry blossom has is its ability to woke strong, complex feelings in people. After all, Japanese culture and language are very emotion-based, and many terms connected to feelings don’t even have straight equivalent term in other languages. First and foremost, cherry blossoms are the sign of spring, similar to autumn leaves. Therefore, their blooming marks the end of season, winter, and the beginning of new one, spring. And as spring has traditionally been the beginning of new year in Japan, cherry blossoms also mark the beginning of new year and the end of old one. As this is an annual phenomenon, every Japanese has a large amount of different memories connected to the blossoms, such as beginning of school or work, or meeting new people. For this reason, cherry blossoms symbolize so many beginnings and endings. The blooming time of cherry blossoms is short. The all blossoms bloom gloriously at the same time for a week or two, and then they scatter to the ground, all at once. As such, cherry blossoms remind Japanese of the evanescence of life, how nothing is permanent. Therefore, according to Japanese philosophy, people should take an example of this and live their lives fully and diligently accept their fate when it comes. Hanami, meaning cherry blossom viewing, is thousands of years old Japanese spring event, where people gather under the cherry blossoms to celebrate the flowers’ blooming and the coming of spring. Spring is also the time when different groups take new members in. For example, new employees start working in their companies at spring and hanami acts as an event where the new employees become full-fledged members of the group, with all responsibilities and rights of the group. Being part of the group is important in Japan. As the appearance of cherry blossoms mark arrival of many changes, hanami also acts as a liminal period that softens both transition and stress
Kirsikankukkien kukkimisaika on erittäin lyhyt. Hanami, eli kirsikankukkien katselu, on tuhansia vuosia jatkunut japanilainen vuosittainen kevään tapahtuma, jossa ihmiset kerääntyvät kirsikankukkien alle juhlimaan niiden puhkeamista kukkaan sekä kevään saapumista. Kevät on myös aika, jolloin erilaiset ryhmät ottavat joukkoonsa uusia jäseniä. Esimerkiksi yhtiöiden rekrytoimat uudet työntekijät aloittavat työnsä keväällä ja hanami toimii tällöin tilaisuutena, jossa uusista työntekijöistä tulee ryhmän täysvaltaisia jäseniä vastuineen ja oikeuksineen. Ryhmään kuuluminen on Japanissa erittäin tärkeää. Koska kirsikankukkien ilmestyminen merkitsee monenlaisten muutosten saapumisesta, hanamin tarkoituksena on toimia liminaalitilana, joka pehmentää muutoksista johtuvaa siirtymää ja stressiä

Donada, Jaqueline Bohn. ""The tree that bears a million of blossoms" : a revaluation of George Eliot's Romola." reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/69843.

Full text
Abstract:
Looking back on her own novel several years after its composition, George Eliot said of Romola that it had been the novel she had written with her best blood, thus indicating a predilection for it among her other books. A survey of her critical fortune, even if a quick one, reveals that Romola is the least popular of her novels. Whereas a few contemporary critics, such as Henry James and Robert Browning, have published enthusiastic reviews, the general tone of these opinions is of disappointment. The most common reason presented is that George Eliot’s fourth novel departs too much from the reality the author knew so well and fails to represent truthfully the zeitgeist of Florence and Florentine people at the close of the fifteenth century. The result of such failure would be a novel constructed out of intellectual effort rather than poetic imagination, with an unnecessary flight to the past and foreign setting which produced improbable events and characters. The clash between George Eliot’s appraisal of her book and the general opinion expressed in its critical fortune is noteworthy and provides the initial motivation of this thesis. Summarising the bulk of criticism about Romola, professor Felicia Bonaparte states that George Eliot never disappointed her readers as much as she did with Romola. The goal of this work is to investigate what I consider to be the main reason for this disappointment: that in Romola, more explicitly than in her other novels, George Eliot was experimenting with the form of the novel and stretching its limits to accommodate formal conventions and aesthetic effects until then generally thought to belong almost exclusively to other genres. The immediate effect of this experiment is a reconfiguration of realism and of the interplay between literary genres which looked like an unselective assortment of loose elements. In Romola, we see George Eliot’s writing progressing towards a more modern kind of novel. This work will have been successful if it can coherently argue that, rather than a random mixture of conventions Romola is a harbinger of the modernist novel. The seminal work of Georg Lukács in The Theory of the Novel sheds some light on the potential of Romola for containing most genres within it and Franco Moretti’s collection The Novel provides valuable critical and theoretical support for this thesis at points in which blanks are left by Lukács’s book. Felicia Bonaparte’s work on George Eliot and George Levine’s studies on realism contribute valuably to the interpretation of English nineteenthcentury that unfolds in the present work.

Dev, Kumar Govindaraj. "Role of airborne soil particulate in transfer of Salmonella spp. to tomato blossoms and consequential fruit contamination." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/40421.

Full text
Abstract:
Contaminated tomatoes have become a commonly implicated vehicle of Salmonella outbreaks. Exposure of tomatoes to pathogen could occur in the field. Blossom inoculation with Salmonella can result in contaminated fruit but natural routes of blossom contamination are not well known. Salmonellae have been known to survive in agricultural soil. Since dispersal of soil particulate by wind is a common phenomenon, the potential of airborne soil particulate as a vehicle of Salmonella contamination in tomato blossoms was examined. It was determined that Salmonella enterica serotype Anatum, Baildon, Braenderup, Montevideo, Newport, Javiana had similar survival patterns in both soil and water. At the end of 40 days, populations of Salmonella in soil dropped by 2.59 log CFU/g and 5.11 log CFU/g when enumerated on Tryptic Soy Agar Yeast Extract (TSAYE) and xylose lysine Tergitol 4 (XLT4) agar respectively. Salmonella populations in water reduced by 2.55 log CFU/ml (TSAYE, enumeration) and 2.94 log CFU/ml (XLT4, enumeration). Blossom to fruit formation takes 20-30 days in tomatoes hence the introduction or presence of the pathogen in agricultural soil and water could increase risk of blossom contamination. Also, it was determined that all Salmonella serotypes tested were capable of biofilm production on glass coverslips and quartz particles. Biofilm based attachment of Salmonella to sand might aid in its dispersal. To visualize transfer of pathogen from soil particulate to blossom in real-time, bioluminescent S. Baildon, S. Braenderup, S. Newport, S. Javiana and S. Anatum were created.Heat shock procedure was developed to improve electrotransformation efficiency in Salmonella. Transformed strains were compared for bioluminescence production and plasmid stability. S. Newport had the best bioluminescence properties but no difference was observed between strains for plasmid stability. Imaging of soil particulate - S. Newport mixture inoculated blossoms, indicated that the event led to pathogen transfer to blossom. It was also determined that S. Newport â soil particulate contaminated blossoms developed into fruits that were positive for S. Newport. S. Newport presence in blossom, fruit surface and internal tissue indicates that contaminated soil particulate could serve as a vehicle of tomato contamination.
Ph. D.

Allen, William Chester G. "Evaluating Application Timing Strategies, Suitability, and Efficacy of Apple Blossom Thinning Chemicals for Commercial Use." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/96444.

Full text
Abstract:
With post-bloom chemical fruit thinning responses being heavily influenced by tree carbohydrate reserves and weather conditions, there is a need for alternative thinning practices such as chemical blossom thinning in the Mid-Atlantic apple growing region. This project sought to 1) evaluate timing strategies for lime sulfur + stylet-oil blossom thinning sprays and 2) screen chemical agents for their suitability and efficacy as blossom thinners. In the first study, two 'Gala'/'M.9' blocks in different states (North Carolina and Virginia) were utilized in 2019 to compare between pollen tube growth model-guided blossom thinning sprays and those that are based on fixed time intervals between the initial application and subsequent thinning sprays. It was generally found that model-guided blossom thinning sprays and sprays applied at 20% open bloom and 48 hours after reduced fruit set, crop load, and improved fruit weight. In the second study, a 'Honeycrisp'/'B.9' and 'Cripps Pink'/'M.9' apple block in Virginia were used in 2018 and 2019 to evaluate multiple chemical agents with and without stylet-oil. Most of the treatments under-thinned compared to untreated control trees. However, it was determined that ammonium thiosulfate with and without stylet-oil was the most effective thinning agent. Potassium bicarbonate + stylet-oil was observed to cause excessive fruit russeting and phytotoxicity. This project demonstrated that optimum apple crop loads can be obtained if lime sulfur + stylet-oil blossom thinning sprays are applied at the proper time, and that multiple chemical agents offer potential use for chemical blossom thinning in the Mid-Atlantic region
Master of Science in Life Sciences
For apple trees to produce high quality fruit, a proportion of the flowers and/or fruit must be removed in a practice known as "thinning". Chemical blossom thinning is a relatively new method of thinning in the Mid-Atlantic apple growing region. This project sought to 1) evaluate spray timing of blossom thinning sprays and 2) evaluate different chemicals for their suitability in blossom thinning. In the first study, two 'Gala' apple orchards in two states (North Carolina and Virginia) were utilized in 2019 to compare a computer model-guided spray timing to structured spray timings based on the amount of time between the first and second sprays. It was found that the model-guided sprays, and sprays occurring once 20% of the blossoms had opened and reapplied 48 hours after, were the most effective in thinning the flowers. In the second part of the study, a 'Honeycrisp' orchard and a 'Cripps Pink' orchard in Virginia were used in 2018 and 2019 to evaluate different chemicals for their potential as blossom thinners. Unfortunately, most of the treatments did not achieve sufficient thinning results compared to untreated trees. However, it was determined that ammonium thiosulfate with and without stylet-oil was the most effective thinning chemical. Potassium bicarbonate with stylet-oil was found to cause excessive injury to the fruit and foliage. This project demonstrated that blossom thinning can be effective when the sprays are applied at the correct time and that multiple chemical agents offer potential for blossom thinning in the Mid-Atlantic.

Shamo, Michael Lyle. "Making the Desert Blossom: Public Works in Washington County, Utah." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2555.

Full text
Abstract:
The following thesis is a study of how communities of Washington County, Utah developed within one of the most inhospitable deserts of the American West. A trend of reliance on public works programs during economic depressions, not only put people to work, but also provided an influx of outside aid to develop an infrastructure for future economic stability and growth. Each of these public works was carefully planned by leaders who not only saw the immediate impact these projects would have, but also future benefits they would confer. These communities also became dependent on acquiring outside investment capital from the Mormon Church, private companies and government agencies. This dependency required residents to cooperate not only with each other, but with these outside interests who now had a stake in the county's development. The construction of the Mormon Tabernacle and Temple in St. George during the 1870s made that community an important religious and cultural hub for the entire region. Large-scale irrigation and reclamation projects in the 1890s opened up new areas for agriculture and settlement. And in the 1920s and 1930s the development of Zion National Park and the construction of roads provided the infrastructure for one of the county's most important industries, tourism. Long after these projects' completion they still provided economic and cultural value to the communities they served. Some of these projects provided the infrastructural foundation that allowed Washington County communities to have greater security and control over their economic future. Over time the communities of southern Utah created dramatic reenactments and erected monuments of these very projects to celebrate and preserve the story of their construction. During the first decade of the twenty-first century Washington County has become one of the fastest growing areas in the country, and as a result public works programs continue to be important to support this growth.

Full text
Abstract:
This research hinges around an ethnographic investigation of what have termed 'underclass' or 'excluded youth'. Located in' a physically isolated and multiply deprived estate - situated in a place deemed to be a prime underclass locale - it examines the extent to which the lived reality of young people's lives in poor places is reflected accurately in recent theories of such lives. Through periods of intensive observation, participant observation and in-depth qualitative interviews with 34 young people, it explores the key themes within these theories (namely attitudes, experiences and aspirations towards education, employment and work, the family, parenthood and independence and crime and community). Despite concerns that young people are detached or excluded from these areas of life, the thesis argues that young people remain attached to the world of work, that the family and parenting are held in high regard, that criminal behaviour is often transitory and that there is a strong attachment to community. In short, then, the research concludes that underclass theories fail to capture the intricacies and realities of the transitions and experiences of so-called underclass youth. Whilst social exclusion discourses do allow for greater understanding of the socioeconomic forces that work to constrain the agency of young people, they - like underclass theories - sometimes over-emphasise choice in the making of youth transitions. Additionally, social exclusion discourses can operate with a similar victimblaming ethos and overestimate the alleged social and moral detachment of young people. Finally, contrary to some of the more convincing social structural analyses of poverty and social exclusion in the US and UK, the thesis argues that in this context blocked opportunities do not generate socio-cultural responses that themselves were significant in generating exclusion. Rather, the ethnography emphasises continued attachment to older forms of working-class culture, life-style and aspirations.

Abstract:
Hydrosols are hydrodistillation products mainly used as food flavoring agents or ingredient in cosmetics. They contain less than 1 g/L of dispersed essential oils giving the organoleptic properties. These are subjected to microbial proliferation that can prevent use due to non-compliance to professional microbiological standards. The microorganisms, their growth dynamics, and the available nutrients in hydrosols remain unknown. Hydrosols can contain few preservatives, but there is no data about their efficiency in hydrosols. The aim of this study was to have a better knowledge on hydrosols composition, their microbiota, and spoilage conditions, in order to propose an adapted stabilization method. The composition in volatile compounds and the microbiota of 22 hydrosol samples of Citrus aurantium L. ssp. amara L. (orange blossom), Rosa damascena Miller (rose D.), and Rosa centifolia L. (rose C.) flowers were analyzed to determine factors responsible for decay. Some non-volatile compounds were likely carried over during distillation by a priming and foaming effect, and could be used as nutrients by microorganisms. Concentrations of volatile compounds in hydrosols are not high enough to prevent microbial proliferation, and bacteria concentrations can reach up to 106 CFU/mL in both hydrosols. The isolated microbial population was composed of oligotrophic Gram-negative bacteria, arranged in four major genera: Pseudomonas sp., Burkholderia cepacia complex, and presumably two new genera belonging to Acetobacteraceae and Rhodospirillaceae. Among those bacteria, Burkholderia vietnamiensis and Novosphingobium capsulatum were able to metabolize volatile compounds, such as geraniol to produce 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one or geranic acid, or 2-phenylethyl acetate to produce 2-phenylethanol. Finally, the growth potential of a range of bacteria isolated from hydrosols and of pathogenic micro-organisms was evaluated, then the anti-microbial activity in nutrient broth and/or in hydrosols of a range of chemical preservatives authorized for food and cosmetic applications was tested.Additional hurdles such as chemical preservatives or aseptic packaging will be necessary to insure microbial stability

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on two early and middle Ming (1368-1580) artists and deals with the role of Chinese historiography in the perpetuation of the dichotomy between the so-called "professional" and the so-called "scholar-amateur" artist. While traditional Chinese historical and biographical sources are an invaluable tool for the sinologist, including the Chinese art historian, the convention adopted by Chinese historians of casting subjects into standard characterized roles has contributed to this dichotomy and resulted in the ongoing debate over the value of the professional artist in China. Historically, Chinese critics and collectors have made a distinction between professional and amateur artists. The traditional Chinese critical bias has been in favour of the scholar-amateur artist. In fact, in much critical literature there is a stigma attached to professionalism in painting. The major initial Western studies of Chinese painting represented a continuation of the traditional Chinese dichotomies. More recently, various kinds of positions have been taken up by Western scholars. James Cahill suggests that a correlation can be made between an artist's painting style and social and economic factors (such as lifestyle, formal training, means of livelihood, demands of patrons, and so on). Richard Barnhart instead defends the professional artist: He believes that Cahill perpetuates the bias in favour of the amateur artist, and that a correlation between an artist's style and social and economic factors is not useful, being too restrictive and general. Their debate was taken up in a series of letters, and this debate has continued down to the present. Some of the most recent Western interpretations attempt to try to break down the earlier dichotomies, and my research supports this interpretive trend. In this context the thesis examines the life and works of two relatively minor artists of the Ming dynasty, the "professional" artist Wu Wei (1459-1508) and the "scholar-amateur" artist Lu Zhi (1496-1576). I discuss the Chinese biographical tradition and have translated the appropriate texts and biographies. Then by examining the paintings themselves in the context of the two artists' environments — Wu Wei in Beijing and Nanjing and Lu Zhi in Suzhou — I show that both of these artists enjoyed the freedom of working in a wide variety of different painting traditions. Early and middle Ming painting criticism is also examined, in addition to the influence of Late Ming (1580-1644) painting criticism and its effect on our perception of Chinese artists. In terms of style, aesthetics, and intellectual outlook, Wu Wei and Lu Zhi may, at first, appear to stand at opposite poles. However, my study of the life circumstances of Wu Wei and Lu Zhi reveals that they share surprisingly similar backgrounds, concerns, and views on their artwork. In addition, an examination of the works of these two artists suggests that a greater fluidity of style and of subject matter existed in the early and middle Ming period than one would expect from the theories based on Late Ming criticism. In other words, the distinction between professional and scholar-amateur artists is overdrawn: Wu Wei and Lu Zhi do not fit neatly into the later understandings of accepted categories or roles, nor do their paintings entirely accord with the theories originating in the Late Ming Period.
Arts, Faculty of
Art History, Visual Art and Theory, Department of
Graduate

Abstract:
The status of women in Taiwan has undergone a significant transformation since the feminist movement in the early 1970s, which was founded by ex-vice president of Taiwan Hsiu-Lien Lu. Women in current Taiwanese society have the right to equality in education as well as employment, unlike women in the 1970s. The thesis explores how new feminist culture has influenced the representation of women in Taiwanese film and television drama. It focuses on an examination of gender in relation to the representation of women in Taiwanese film and television drama from 1985 to 2013. The main body of the thesis is taken up with an analysis of the representation of women in selected Taiwanese films and television dramas, for instance The Fierce Wife: Woman Onerous: Seeking Mr. Right (Pei Hua Wang, 2012) and The Fierce Wife (Fun Jun Xu, 2010). The thesis discusses how new feminism has influenced Taiwanese popular culture through films and television dramas, and how these films and television dramas treat the central themes of marriage, love and the role of women. The thesis also discusses female authorship and films directed by women through an examination of Sylvia Chang’s films, for instance 20, 30, 40 (2004). The thesis further explores the representation of women in conjunction with a feminist discussion of the power and function of these narrative structures in constructing female identities.

Abstract:
"Research on Dracontius' epyllia" is a thesis which is composed of two parts. In the first, after an introduction where are examined the life of the author, his work (whom subject can be the book of genesis or the classical mythology) and particularly the miscellaneous book named romulea, follows the Latin text of the de raptu helenae, eighth poem of this book, with a critical apparatus and a translation. Then a detailed commentary explains all the problems of the establishment of the text and of the translation, and gives precisions about the language, the style, the meaning of this poem. In the second part, which is synthetically, after two big chapters which precisely explain the nature and the characteristics of the epyllion (short poem written in dactylic hexameters, with a mythological subject) and makes the history of the word epyllion from Aristophanes until today, the author deals with Dracontius' epyllia themselves. Here are examined the style of Dracontius' epyllia, his inclination to the baroque and the neo-alexandrinism, his imitations of Vergilius, Ovidius, Lucanus, Statius, Claudianus, his conception of love and his often original vision of the mythological world. Then in five chapters is investigated the verse itself of Dracontius' mythological poems: it is a study of the prosody, of the metric, of the divisions, of the elisions, of the rhythm and of the order of the words. Finally a conclusion makes clear the originality of Dracontius' mythological work and his interest for the history of the Late Latin poetry

96
In the past few years, there have been many new activities popping up in the countryside because of local governments’ impetus to create new festivals. The Wu-Lai Hot Spring and Cherry Blossom Festival is one of these new festivals, and it further developed its own special festival’s activities by combining natural resources and the culture of the local Aborigines. The main goals of this festival were to increase the number of tourists visiting the area, to create employment opportunities, to help locals further understand their own culture, and to maintain a sustainable environment for tourism. A research study was performed and it consisted of information gathered from questionnaire surveys and interviews directed at business owners, public officials and the residents of Wu-Lai. The results of the study were needed to gain an understanding of the overall degree of satisfaction felt by those surveyed, as well as, those who organized and ran the events. The study also gave an understanding of the benefits of having these activities, the factors, which can have both positive and negative influences on the activities, an understanding of what the people who were surveyed thought about attracting tourists to the area, and a complete discussion. The results of the research study provided the following: 1. The understanding and degree of satisfaction of the residents of Wu-Lai regarding to the festival are a little low, according to the survey result difference showed: they don’t have obvious different between sexes and the higher educated people have better acknowledgment on Cherry Blossom Festival. Owners get better acknowledgement than average people. Higher income people get better acknowledgement. Low educated people’s information very much relies on friends or relatives. High educated people rely on media. Average people gain information from friends or relatives. Others rely on media. Wu-La village owner tends to show the lowest satisfaction. 2. Abstract:
99
Trees have always been one of the major themes in both Eastern and Western paintings. Initially its whole purpose was to create contrasts in the picture. As the artists focused on the nature more and more, trees became one of the best symbols on the subject. In this paper, I first described the changing roles of trees in the Western paintings. During the Renaissance period, trees are a minor subject, compared to the human subjects. As the philosophy of humanities developed through out the Baroque years, the artists turned their eyes to the nature and therefore trees were seen more and more frequently in the paintings. In the Romanticism age, trees became the major subject of the paintings. The artists yearned for portraits of the countryside, especially the light and airflow around the trees. This way of paintings also influenced the Impressionists in the later years. Camille Pissarro is a well-known Impressionists describing trees as the symbols of the nature. During his long professional career, he sang the praises of nature from various angles to interpret the trees. Through with different paintings, Pissarro never failed to express the reality of nature. Also in the Eastern paintings, trees served as the contrast in the beginning. After the Five Dynasties, landscape paintings became the main stream of drawings, trees earned its role in the pictures. On the contrary to solely feel the reality of nature, Chinese artists tried to combine the philosophy and the reality together. Just like the so called “Magic arts nature” of Lao-Zhuang thoughts, the artist should first understand the innate characteristics of nature, then he could describe it by painting. This is also one of the major differences between the Eastern and the Western paintings. But I believe there still are similarities between these two schools of paintings. Huang Bin-Hong was one of the famous Chinese artists with similar ways of paintings as those of the Impressionists. He started from sketching the nature. Combining smooth colors and dense strokes, he successfully let the trees become the symbols of nature, just as those great development achieved by Pissarro. This paper tried to discuss the similarities and differences of describing the nature between the Eastern and Western paintings. By comparing the methods of drawing the trees between Huang Bin-Hong and Pissarro, I believe that even in different years and different areas, some similarities should still be developed to praise the beauty and the magic of the nature. Bennett, Jason Patrick. "Blossoms and borders: Cultivating apples and a modern countryside in the Pacific Northwest, 1890-2001." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/876.

Full text
Abstract:
At the turn of the twentieth century, apples served as a catalyst for far-reaching social and environmental change in the North American West. As people debated the future of North American society as a rural or urban civilization, rural advocates found their answer in horticulture. Steadfast in their conviction that urban environments were corrupt, immoral, and disordered, people on both sides of the international boundary engaged in a boisterous promotional campaign that culminated with the creation of an orcharding landscape that spanned British Columbia, Washington State, and Oregon. Consequently, countless communities found new purpose or came into existence organized around the cultivation of apples and other assorted fruits. Fully aware of negative stereotypes that depicted farming as backwards and unfulfilling, horticulturists argued that fruit farming would lead to the creation of a modern countryside. Guided by scientific agriculture, refined and intelligent settlers would transform rural life by uniting in partnership with “Dame Nature,” leading to bountiful harvests as nature was finished to its “intended end.” As a result, the orcharding landscape would organize an alternative modernity that stood in juxtaposition to the urban-industrial axis of development. Despite their location in different political projects, fruit farmers on either side of the International Boundary bore striking affinities that were affirmed and reinforced through publications, associations, exhibitions, and educational initiatives, underlining the significance of the border as a vantage to appreciate divisions as well as continuities. While the creation of a modern countryside was sustained by high hopes, growers did not anticipate that nature’s bounty would in many instances stand as a curse rather than a blessing. Through two world wars, growers wrestled with the changing contours of rural life, particularly as it related to rural growth. While orcharding endured, its original conception as the nucleus of a progressive and middle class rural society did not.

Full text
Abstract:
Blueberry shock ilarvirus (BSIV) was cloned using random primers. Complementary DNA (cDNA) was ligated into Bluescript II and used to transform into DH5a Escherichia coil. The plasmids were screened for BSIV RNA 3 cDNA by Northern, Southern and dot blots. Seven clones were restriction mapped. A 412 base pair region of three clones was sequenced and compared to tobacco streak, citrus variegation, apple mosaic and prune dwarf ilarvirus coat proteins (cp) at the nucleotide and amino acid levels. The BSIV cp amino acid sequence was 61% homologous with that of apple mosaic virus cp. BSIV virions were localized in ‘Bluetta’ and ‘Rancocas’ blueberry pollen by immunoelectron microscopy. The identity of a virus co-isolated with BSIV from blueberry blossoms was determined. It’s host range and symptomatology differed significantly from BSIV. Purified virions were isometric, Ca. 32 nm in diameter, with electron dense centres. The cp subunit had a molecular weight (Mw) of 30 kD. The genome was single-stranded and tripartite with M’s of 1.19, 1.01, 0.74 and 0.37 x 106 D and when the double-stranded RNA profile was compared to that of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) isolated from primula, they were identical. Polyclonal antiserum and monoclonal antibodies were produced. The polyclonal antiserum reacted with CMV serotypes I and II; all the monoclonal antibodies reacted with CMV-II, although some monoclonal antibodies reacted with CMV-I. The virus, called CMV-B since it was isolated from blueberry blossoms, was an isolated of CMV-II. A relationship between BSIV and CMV in blueberry plants was investigated. None of the 650 BSIV infected blueberry tissue samples tested in 1993 were infected with CMV. Vegetation within and near the BSIV-infected field, was surveyed and seven of nineteen species tested were infected with CI\4V. It was concluded that CMV-infected pollen deposited by pollinators on the blueberry blossoms was the source and that blueberry was probably not a host of CMV.

Abstract:
107
The plum blossom poetry, either in quality or quantity, has witnessed extremely great changes in in the Two Song dynasties. There are over 4,700 poems about the plum blossom in The Whole Song Poetry. Instead of the sustenance of the sentimental moods, these poems carry the symptoms of moral significance. The high image and symbol of the plum blossom has hence become a research trend. However, among the various plum blossom poetry, the images and symbolic meanings of the plum blossom varies and should not necessarily be confined in the aspect of morality. This research takes the plum blossom poetry in The Whole Song Poetry published by the Center for Ancient Chinese Classics & Archives, Peking University (CACCA) as the research object, adopting cultural methodology, imagery theory, aesthetics methods, as well as contextual analysis and biographical methods to comprehensively develop a new thesis--A Corner of Literary History: the Image and Symbol of Plum Blossom in Plum Blossom Poetry in the Song Dynasty, which explores the roles that the plum blossom plays in the lives of scholars and the common people in terms of food, clothing, housing, transportation and entertainment during the Song Dynasty. By writing poems, scholars recorded how plum blossoms has occupied their material life, as well as consciously employed different literary techniques to shape the lofty image of the plum blossom. As a self-symbol of morality, the high image of the plum blossom hence became unique. But overall, the images of plum blossoms as depicted in plum blossom poetry in the Song Dynasty are very diverse, with each image being a symbol of the poets’ emotions. This is a result of literati’s unconscious generation of other plum blossom images. Human emotions are varied, complex and cannot be absolutely classified, which can be likened to the growth of the plum blossom, which experiences from being serene, blooming, full blooming, blowing off and bearing. Its diversified images symbolize deep love, common human feelings and leisure moods so as to express the poets’ life and experience. These are the research results concluded from the plum blossom poetry in The Whole Song Poetry in combination with the backgrounds of the poets. In turn this is then utilized to observe the scholars’ mental states and their social life, which in other words is the interaction between literature and society, ultimately enabling the formation of the conclusion of this thesis.

Abstract:
99
Abstract The discourse titled “Blossom Psyche” is a self-exploration through my creations. My intention is to investigate the metaphysical state of human mental performance. Through a coincidental encounter of the ego and the super ego, my intrinsic self was forged with the psyche and was presented in my creations of printmaking. We came to this planet, open to a world of experience. The development of abstraction enables us to establish a link with the real world. The method of abstraction plowed through the way of human civilization, refined the universality of the world, and helped people to escape from the restriction of concreteness. It is in this invisible and intangible abstract world that we could rethink and seek for the spirit of civilization. My creations of printmaking include four series of work: “Microcosm”, “Lyrical Abstraction”, “Ann Weekly Drawings”, and “Mandela”. They released the objective of images from vagarious contingency and created the eternal value through the form of abstraction. I attempted to penetrate into myself through an intuitive way. A surrealistic approach was used to express various emotions by means of point, line, block, color, shape, and composition. The imagination and the power of abstraction were ultimately inspired with each other. The inherent nature of Post-Modernism is the ability that through the symbols, the psyche generalizes itself. Language employs its logic, which was established based on language itself, to restore the world to the symbol. This is also the process to transform the nature into the culture and to transform the culture into an intrinsic system of the sign. I attempted to convert the messages stemming from different dreams and inspiration into the form which person could understand, appreciate, and apply. Looking forward to this discourse could express the energy of the psyche. It is through this mental power that I obtain my rebirth. Keywords: Psyche, Symbol, Surrealistic, Abstract

99
Summary ‘Flowers and Plants’ is my creative theme not only because the appearance it shows but also the complex composition it appears. Flower is the most beautiful creature in nature. It also symbolizes different meanings. In literature, the word ‘flower’ is often used to describe women, and is thought to be an image of personality in literati paintings. In the present day, flower is also used as a transfer medium to express different moral blessing. In my creative process, the two artists Georgia O'Keeffe and Sanyu have a deep impact on me. Through the inspiration of these two masters and aesthetics cultivation of Chinese literati, and combined with my personal visual aesthetic experience, I can convert the images of flowers into a visible image in my paintings. Through the three stages in my evolution of creative process: imitation, transition period and creative period, I hope I can find out my own painting vocabulary and have a sustainable development. The earth is full of Zen. What you see is not always what you get. It just shows the original appearance of nature. The more truth we know, the love to beauty is less unambiguous.

Chapter 2: The academic bases of the painting, including Freud's Subconscious, arguments for happening and analyses on the work of relative artists. Chapter 3: The contents and the form of the painting, exploring expression techniques of the artists whose work symbolizes flowers and comparing the elements of individual expression. Chapter 4: The creating process and analyses of the work, providing detailed explanation on each step and analyzing the meaning of the concepts and the contextual process of the work. Chapter 5: Conclusion, digging deep into the subconscious to look for the most unforgettable memories through the spontaneous happening and hidden emotion triggered by automatism during the creating process.
