Let $X$ , $Y$ be nonsingular real algebraic sets. A map $\varphi \colon X \to Y$ is said to be $k$ -regulous, where $k$ is a nonnegative integer, if it is of class $\mathcal {C}^k$ and the restriction of $\varphi$ to some Zariski open dense subset of $X$ is a regular map. Assuming that $Y$ is uniformly rational, and $k \geq 1$ , we prove that a $\mathcal {C}^{\infty }$ map $f \colon X \to Y$ can be approximated by $k$ -regulous maps in the $\mathcal {C}^k$ topology if and only if $f$ is homotopic to a $k$ -regulous map. This paper studies a particular type of planar Filippov system that consists of two discontinuity boundaries separating the phase plane into three disjoint regions with different dynamics. This type of system has wide applications in various subjects. As an illustration, a plant disease model and an avian-only model are presented, and their bifurcation scenarios are investigated. By means of the regularization approach, the blowing up method, and the singular perturbation theory, we provide a different way to analyze the dynamics of this type of Filippov system. Abstract:
Abstract IN Chapter V we laid the foundations for a systematic treatment of the projective geometry of the conic, and showed also how the affine and euelidean properties of conics find a natural place in the scheme. In this chapter we shall develop the theory in greater detail, and it will be part of our purpose to prove a number of well-known geometrical properties of conics, such as, for example, Pascal’s Theorem. The reader should by this time be fully conversant with the relationship between the different geometries of the projective hierarchy, and he should be able from time to time to change his point of view without losing sight of the logical structure of the system as a whole. Our principal object of study, he will understand, is projective geometry over the complex field; but by considering only real points as actual and properly complex points as ideal, and by suitably restricting the class of allowable coordinate representations, we can treat affine or euelidean space as a specialization of complex projective space. Up to the present we have been careful to maintain a clear separation between the different kinds of space, but from now on we shall allow ourselves greater freedom, dealing for the most part with projective space, but permitting digressions into more special spaces whenever these seem appropriate or illuminating.

Abstract The history of group actions is intimately tied up with the development of both algebraic topology and Lie group theory. In this chapter, we show how minimal models can be used to study compact Lie group actions on manifolds. We focus on certain aspects of group actions that are especially amenable to model techniques. Throughout the chapter, G will generally denote a Lie group acting on a compact manifold M . Certain properties of M will be apparent. For instance, when the action is free (i.e. no point in M is left fixed by any g G ), we have a principal G -bundle M M/G with the particular consequence that χ (M) 0.

Abstract Let us now review our position with regard to the overall aims of this book. In Chapter 1 we set up the twin problems in four-manifold theory: deciding the existence and uniqueness of manifolds with given intersection forms. In Chapter 8 we have shown how arguments with Yang-Mills moduli spaces give strong non-existence results, and in Chapter 9 we have developed invariants of four–manifolds aimed at the complementary question of uniqueness. However we have not yet given any full-blooded example of the application of these invariants, i.e. shown that they can distinguish differentiable four-manifolds with the same intersection form, and this is the purpose of the present chapter. We will describe the main ideas in the proof of the general Theorem (1.3.5), and give a complete proof of the special result ( I .3.6).

Abstract Is it true that, up to BPI equivalence, there are only countably many BPI spaces with Poincare inequalities (in the sense of Section 2.3)? In particular, are there only countably many positive numbers which arise as Hausdorff dimensions of such spaces? For the first part of the question, one can get counterexamples with families of nilpotent Lie groups. See p. 53-54 of [Bel]. In this case, there is a particularly natural way to try to make nontrivial continuous deformations, using the algebraic structure involved. Abstract:
A fundamental result in Riemannian geometry is the jet isomorphism theorem which asserts that at the origin in geodesic normal coordinates, the full Taylor expansion of the metric may be recovered from the iterated covariant derivatives of curvature. As a consequence, one deduces that any local invariant of Riemannian metrics has a universal expression in terms of the curvature tensor and its covariant derivatives. Geodesic normal coordinates are determined up to the orthogonal group, so problems involving local invariants are reduced to purely algebraic questions concerning invariants of the orthogonal group on tensors. This chapter proves an analogous jet isomorphism theorem for conformal geometry. By making conformal changes, the Taylor expansion of a metric in geodesic normal coordinates can be further simplified, resulting in a “conformal normal form” for metrics about a point.
