In South Africa, the agriculture sector utilizes approximately 62% of freshwater resources and contributes directly about5% to the Gross Domestic Product. The ongoing urbanization leads to densification and growth of cities, which replaces natural areas with hard surfaces. Precipitation is then more likely to runoff as stormwater than to be detained locally. Also, precipitation is predicted to be increasing as an effect of climate change. Traditionally, stormwater has been handled by draining it in underground pipes. As a complement, blue-green infrastructure (BGI) can be used to take care of the increased amount of stormwater. BGI is vegetation and water-based systems that intend to restore the natural flows of water. It does, however, not only

ICA vill utveckla sitt miljöarbete i vattenfrågor. In this study social network analysis is used to empirically map out existing collaborative social networks influencing water governance in the Mkindo catchment, in Tanzania. I assess how existing social networks may affect the capacity to govern water and explore how knowledge about these networks can be used to facilitate more effective or adaptive water resources management. The study is the first of its kind to apply social network analysis to organizations influencing both blue water (the liquid water in rivers, lakes and aquifers) and green water (the soil moisture used by plants) at the

Cyanobacteria are a diverse group of microorganisms adapted to a range of environmental conditions that favour their ubiquity in waterbodies. Cyanobacteria harmful blooms (CyanoHABs) are events in which a cyanobacteria population grows rapidly, dominates the phytoplankton community and may release toxins or other noxious compounds in the waterbody. The frequency and magnitude of CyanoHABs are increasing as a result of climate change and increased pollution from urbanisation and agriculture expansion, representing a major risk to the public health and economy. The sudden and often unpredictable occurrence of potentially toxic cyanobacterial blooms in agricultural irrigation water presents a human and animal health hazard internationally. The cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa produces a range of protein-phosphatase inhibitory microcystins which are the only cyanotoxins for which the World Health Organisation currently produces action thresholds. Contact with irrigation water and irrigated food containing cyanobacterial toxins has caused human illness and livestock deaths, and a suspect relationship with chronic neurodegenerative human diseases i
