Listeria monocytogenes, a foodborne pathogen, is considered as one of the major problems in food safety. With strong safety regulations, a monitoring measure is essential for protecting the health and safety of consumers. Thus, a reliable monitoring method is required. In this study, a rapid assay based on a combination of helicase dependent amplification (HDA) and DNA signal detection via nucleic acid hybridization in blue silver nanoplates (AgNPls) was established. A paper-based laboratory-on-a-chip assay for the rapid detection of a highly pathogenic strain of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (HP-PRRSV) was developed for the first time. The single-unit chip was simply fabricated using Whatman filter paper and plastic lamination. The chip measured 2.5 × 3.0 cm2 and was divided into two parts, one for nucleic acid amplification and the other for signal detection. The HP-PRRSV assay was performed by specific ORF I Nsp 2 gene amplification via an isothermal reverse transcription loop-mediated DNA amplification platform, whereas the cDNA s

In this study, we conducted a one-step photochemical synthesis to produce silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with irregular morphology. The synthesis process involved the photoconversion of Ag nanoseeds into self-assembled Ag nanostructures of various morphologies using a high-pressure sodium lamp with a wavelength of 589 nm, corresponding to an energy of 2.1 eV. During the synthesis, the color of the colloidal Ag nanoseeds gradually changed as the irradiation time increased, transitioning from yellow to brown, juniper green, basil green, ocean green, aegean blue, and finally to true blue. Silver nanostructures (silver nanopaerticles e.g AgNPs and silver nanoplates e.g AgNPls) of various sizes and shapes were prepared using different reducing agents in ionic liquid media. The ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, which acts both as a cosolvent and a surfactant, was used to synthesize smaller and more ordered silver nanostructures. Spherical nanoparticles (silver NPs) were prepared using sodium borohydride as a reducing agent. This is a first report on the cytotoxic activity of humic acid synthesized silver nanoplates (HAgNpl) against Dalton’s lymphoma ascites (DLA). Humic acid, a supramolecule, has been shown to possess various biological activities. Humic acid used in the present study for the synthesis of silver nanoplates is isolated from mangrove sediments. Chemical composition of the humic acid was analysed using solid state C-13 NMR spectroscopy. Morphology of nanoplates were investigated using SEM. Silver nanoplates (AgP) were prepared and used in a colorimetric method for the evaluation of Xanthine (Xan) in blood plasma and fish meat. The detection mechanism for Xan was observed to occur via etching of AgP particles/aggregation/fusion steps, resulting in a color change from blue to grey. First, the basic Xan solution is adsorbed through partial substitution of capping molecules around the AgP with Xan, and then intermolecular hydrogen bonds form between AgP and AgP. Subsequently, the titrant Xan solution further etches the AgP and finally fuses particles together. Owing to the step by s

A fast and sensitive aptasensor was developed using nanoplates with peroxidase activity as a novel approach. E. coli detection is described using a silver/platinum nanoplate (Ag/Pt NPL) that interacts with an oligonucleotide aptamer as a bioreceptor. The size of the Ag/Pt NPLs was about 42 nm according to the FE-SEM images. The EDS result indicates that a thin layer of Pt ions was coated on the surface of the Ag NPLs. This nanobiosensor has the ability to specifically bind to E. coli, increasing the peroxidase activity of the apt-Ag/Pt NPL. Finally, the blue color of the solution in the contam

Abstract We encapsulated silver nanoplates (AgNPLs) into poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) nanoparticles. The encapsulation stabilized the AgNPLs in a physiological environment and the antibacterial activity of the AgNPLs against planktonic bacteria was reduced. However, the PLGA nanoparticles encapsulating the AgNPLs were internalized into macrophages and showed antibacterial activity against intracellular bacteria. AgNPL-loaded PLGA nanoparticles are promising for treating intractable infectious diseases caused by bacteria-infecting macrophages.
