Pinn, Jarred Michael. "Effect of End-Plate Tabs on Drag Reduction of a 3D Bluff Body with a Blunt Base." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2012. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/698.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis involves the experimental testing of a bluff body with a blunt base to evaluate the effectiveness of end-plate tabs in reducing drag. The bluff body is fitted with interchangeable end plates; one plate is flush with the rest of the exterior and the other plate has small tabs protruding perpendicularly into the flow. The body is tested in the Cal Poly 3ft x 4ft low speed wind tunnel. Testing is conducted in three phases. The first phase was the hot-wire measurement of streamwise velocity of the near wake behind the bluff body. An IFA300 thermal anemometry system with a hot-wire prob

Abstract:
Radiotherapy is the clinical application of the ionizing radiation to treat cancer. Ionizing radiation causes multiple modes of damage to the DNA damage such as SSBs, DSBs and modified bases such as thymine glycol. These lesions can exist as clusters in one or two helical turns of DNA. DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) are extremely toxic to cells because they can lead to genomic rearrangements and even cell death. If base lesions accompany these DSBs, there will be a substantial hindrance for repair. NHEJ is the primary DSB repair pathway in mammalian cells. HRR repairs single strand breaks (S

Kelbaugh, Cristina Lynn. "Rib Fracture Patterns in Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents." Scholar Commons, 2015. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5524.

Full text
Abstract:
Rib fractures are present in 25 percent of all trauma-related deaths, making the mechanism and pattern of rib fractures an important area of trauma research (Lien et al. 2009). Rib fractures are important to consider when researching trauma because they can cause serious complications contributing to an individual's mortality. This retrospective research study focuses on rib fracture patterns in fatal motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). The sample consists of 105 MVA victims--68 males and 37 females. Data was collected at the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's Office in Tampa, Florida. The stu

Abstract:
Background: The American College of Surgeons guidelines suggest the use of intact gloves, double gloving, hands-free zone technique to pass sharp instruments, and blunt tip suture needles to protect patients, as well as the surgical team. This study estimates the extent to which these guidelines are followed in a large academic health system. Methods: Over a two-month period in the spring of 2010, 320 general surgical attendings, subspecialty surgical attendings, and surgical resident physicians practicing at a large academic health system, were approached during or after surgical conferenc
