Abstract:
AbstractThe current study is an investigation of attentional blink (AB) in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Attentional Blink refers to the brief lapse in visual processing when the eye rapidly moves from one location to another. The aim of the study was to determine whether individuals with ASD experience a more pronounced or longer AB than comparisons. Eleven children and adolescents with ASD and 11 typically developing children were matched on verbal and non-verbal mental age (MA) and presented with a dual-stream rapid serial visual presentation containing images of animals (targets) and objects (distractors), and instructed to identify the animals. No significant group differences were found in accuracy rates, indicating that temporal dynamics of attention might be intact in ASD. However, differences were found in accuracy rates when the participants were divided by MA, regardless of diagnosis, indicating a developmental trajectory of AB, for individuals with and without ASD.<br>RésuméCette étude porte sur le phénomène « d'attentional blink » (AB) chez les enfants et les adolescents atteints de troubles envahissants du développement (TED).

Abstract:
Top-down expectations allow us to quickly filter relevant events from the continuous stimulation by the environment. The Attentional Blink (AB) paradigm simulates such taxing situations in the laboratory (Raymond et al., 1992). For the first time, I employed composite events as targets in an AB paradigm. A first target (T1) was defined as 3 consecutive digits, while a second target (T2) was an ‘X’. In this way, unfulfilled expectations regarding T1 could be elicited by presenting partial targets, containing only 1 or 2 digits. My paradigm was specifically developed to allow the manipulation of global and local expectations independently. While global expectations are induced by relative trial frequencies and modulate target expectations prior to a trial, local expectations are induced by the consecutive presentation of digits that raise the expectation for a full target as a trial unfolds. I predicted that, when expectation for the full target was globally high and locally raised to a maximum, disappointing these expectations would result in an AB in itself without a full T1 being presented (i.e. with 2 digits). Possibly, this AB could be even larger in magnitude than when expectations are met (with 3 digits). This was indeed the case when 3 digit trials were the most frequent event (Experiments 1, 3, 4 and 5). When global expectations for 3 digits were high, I observed the strongest AB with 2 digits, greater even than with the full T1. This suggests that maximally raised but violated expectations (with 2 digits) have a more detrimental effect on subsequent T2 processing than fulfilled expectations for the full target (3 digits). I subsequently showed that this pattern could not simply be explained by enumeration of the digits (Experiment 2). Counting the digits was associated with the same blink magnitude with 1, 2 and 3 digits, suggesting that counting involves consolidation of digits into working memory as targets, a process unaffected by global expectation of trial types or the quantity of digits. I then investigated the role of bottom-up signals in switching from raised expectations for the T1 to T2. I considered the roles of the post digit mask (Experiment 3), and of colour- (Experiment 4) and sound-based (Experiment 5) switching signals which marked the end of the digit event. Performance was improved considerably by removing the lag 1 mask after partial targets (1 digit and 2 digits), but not after full targets (3 digits). For partial targets, the presence of a mask seems to conflict with the expectations for another digit, and the knock-on effect could be a delay in switching to T2. The AB magnitude for full targets is unaffected by the mask, suggesting consolidation of T1 and switching to T2 occurs immediately after the 3rd and final digit. On the other hand, marking the final digit with a colour or sound did not influence the AB in any digit condition. Taken together, this suggests that in this paradigm, top-down expectations play a much stronger role than bottom-up factors. I then manipulated the relative frequencies of the digit events to investigate how top-down global and local expectations contributed to the AB magnitudes. In Experiments 6 and 7, the 3 digit event became increasingly rarer as the 2 digit event became more frequent. Overall, I found a reversal of the previous pattern: The AB with 3 digits became increasingly stronger than the AB with 2 digits. My findings suggest that global expectations influence the build up of local expectation increments with each presented digit, yet this occurs in a non-linear fashion. Two MEG experiments further show that raised and subsequently violated expectations for T1 have a distinct neural signature (MEG Experiment 1), which cannot be accounted for by the act of counting the digits (MEG Experiment 2). In particular, beta-band oscillations seem to code for both the target processing and the rapid changes in local expectations during the trial. A key finding from MEG Experiment 1 was the similar widespread beta power decrease for 2 digits and 3 digits until 0.6 s, when the conditions dissociated into a frontal power increase for 2 digits while the 3 digit power decrease continued. Tentatively, I suggest that this could represent the building of expectations for the full target (power decrease) and the subsequent violation of expectations (frontal power increase) in the 2 digit trials. An M300 to each digit suggests that all digits enter the global workspace and are consolidated into working memory; a finding which is corroborated by the theta-band results. Meanwhile, alpha oscillations were more posterior and appear to code for the processing of full targets only (3 digits in MEG Experiment 1, and 1, 2 and 3 digits in MEG Experiment 2). To summarise, my key finding is that an AB can be elicited without a T1 actually occurring. Building up expectations about the T1 event within a trial can alone induce an AB. Furthermore, built and subsequently violated expectations for the T1 event seem to be coded in the brain by widespread modulations of beta oscillations. I discuss the findings with relation to several models of the AB. In particular, my behavioural and MEG findings fit well with the “Robust State” hypothesis (Kessler et al., 2005a), set within the wider “Global Workspace” framework (Dehaene et al., 2003a), which accounts for the dynamic interaction of top-down expectations with bottom-up visual processing. I envisage this novel aspect of expectations complementing the growing knowledge of the AB and emphasising the importance of network dynamics as a metaphor for the parallel distributed processing in the brain.

Abstract:
PONTIFÍCIA UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DO RIO DE JANEIRO<br>COORDENAÇÃO DE APERFEIÇOAMENTO DO PESSOAL DE ENSINO SUPERIOR<br>PROGRAMA DE SUPORTE À PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO DE INSTS. While many comics were and still are produced, either on an industrial scale, or without great pretension to perpetuate, they coexist today with other types of initiative. In opposition to the current arrangements that involve what is usually called literary, comics, in their own way, have been reinvented by their increased displacement to book format, especially on longer narratives aiming adult audience. This dissertation takes as an object of discussion two graphic novels: Cachalote e Campo em Branco. As a result of partnerships between writer and cartoonist, they were produced by RT Features and edited by the label Quadrinhos na Cia. from Companhia das Letras. Starting from the analysis of specificity in production as well as in creation of these works, it is sought to understand the emergence of new shadings in the relations between the verbal and the visual, so much for in the links between the literary, editorial and media. In addition, we discuss of which terminologies are more suitable to these objects and in which way they may or may not allude to long-established issues of hierarchy among cultural products. In the midst of the digital era, marked by the omnipresence of images, we also wonder about what sense it grasps within the gesture of opting for narratives, that call upon manual and authorship trace. Furthermore, we investigate the horizontal dynamics of shared creation and the authors combined effort to avoid the simply-repeated success of previous generations, either in the field of literature, or in the field of graphic genres. Finally, there is an effort in the way the authors bring to new limits the natural dialogue between these two languages.

Abstract:
Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs) are public shell entities uniquely constructed to acquire one or more privately held businesses. The transaction's structural characteristics put significant pressure on the management team's capabilities to find a suitable company to acquire within the predetermined time frame. This thesis investigates whether management team characteristics, such as operating experience and gender diversity, increases the likelihood of success in identifying the target company and conducting the merger. Although not statistically significant, the results indicate that SPACs led by “C-suite” operators do not have a higher likelihood of successfully consummating a business combination. Furthermore, our data indicates gender diversity to have a positive impact on acquisition likelihood.<br>Special Purpose Acquisition Companies (SPACs) är publika skalbolag konstruerade enkom i syfte att förvärva ett eller flera privata bolag.

Abstract:
Human activities such as mining and smelting of lead (Pb) ores and combustion of alkyllead additives in gasoline have resulted in extensive global Pb pollution. Since the late 1960's studies of polar ice and snow have been undertaken to evaluate the extent of anthropogenic Pb emissions in recent times as well as to investigate changes in anthropogenic Pb emissions in the more distant past. The polar ice sheets have been used to investigate Pb pollution as they offer a long-term record of human activity located far from pollution sources and sample aerosol emissions on a hemispheric scale. Lead isotopes have been previously used to identify sources of Pb in polar snow and ice, while new evaluations of Pb isotopic compositions in aerosols and Pb ore bodies allow more thorough evaluations of anthropogenic Pb emissions. Lead isotopic compositions and Pb and Barium (Ba) concentrations have been measured in snow and ice core samples from Law Dome, East Antarctica, to produce a detailed pollution history between 1530 AD and 1989 AD. Such a record has been produced to evaluate changes in anthropogenic Pb emission levels and sources over the past 500 years, to determine when industrial (anthropogenic) activities first began to influence Antarctica and also to investigate natural Pb fluxes to Antarctica. Additional samples were also collected from Law Dome snow and ice cores to respectively investigate seasonal variations in Pb and Ba deposition, and the influence of the 1815 AD volcanic eruption of Tambora, Indonesia. All samples were measured by thermal ionisation mass spectrometry, for which techniques were developed to reliably analyse Pb isotopic compositions in Antarctic samples containing sub-picogram per gram concentrations of Pb.<br>Particular attention was given to the quantity of Pb added to the samples during the decontamination and sample storage stages of the sample preparation process. These stages, including the use of a stainless steel chisel for the decontamination, contributed ~5.2 pg to the total sample analysed, amounting to a concentration increase of ~13 fg g-1. In comparison, the mass spectrometer ion source contributed typically 89 +/- 19 fg to the blank, however its influence depended upon the amount of Pb available for analysis and so had the greatest impact when small volumes of samples with a very low concentration were analysed. As a consequence of these careful investigations of the Pb blank contributions to the samples, the corrections made to the Pb isotopic ratios and concentrations measured are smaller than previously reported evaluations of Pb in Antarctica by thermal ionisation mass spectrometry. The data indicate that East Antarctica was relatively pristine until -1884 AD, after which the first influence of anthropogenic Pb in Law Dome is observed. "Natural", pre-industrial, background concentrations of Pb and Ba were - 0.4 pg/g and - 1.3 pg/g, respectively, with Pb isotopic compositions within the range 206Pb/207Pb = 1.20 - 1.25 and 208Pb/207Pb = 2.46 - 2.50 and an average rock and soil dust Pb contribution of 8-12%. A major pollution event was observed at Law Dome between 1884 and 1908 AD, elevating the Pb concentration fourfold and changing 206Pb/207Pb ratios in the ice to ~1.12. Based on Pb isotopic systematics and Pb emissions statistics, this was attributed to Pb mined at Broken Hill and smelted at Broken Hill and Port Pirie, Australia.<br>Anthropogenic Pb inputs to Law Dome were most significant from ~1900 to 1910 and from ~1960 to 1980. During the 20th century, Ba concentrations were consistently higher than "natural" levels. This was attributed to increased dust production, suggesting the influence of climate change and/or changes in land coverage with vegetation. Law Dome ice dated from 1814 AD to 1819 AD was analysed for Pb isotopes and Pb, Ba and Bismuth (Bi) concentrations to investigate the influence of the 1815 AD volcanic eruption of Tambora, Indonesia. The presence of volcanic debris in the core samples was observed from late-1816 AD to 1818 AD as an increase in sulphate concentrations and electrical conductivity of the ice. Barium concentrations were approximately three times higher than background levels from mid-1816 to mid1818, consistent with increased atmospheric loading of rock and soil dust, while enhanced Pb/Ba and Bi/Ba ratios, associated with deposition of volcanic debris, were observed at mid-1814 and from early-1817 to mid-1818. From the results, it appeared likely that Pb emitted from Tambora was removed from the atmosphere within the 1.6 year period required to transport aerosols to Antarctica. Increased Pb and Bi concentrations observed in Law Dome ice ~1818 AD were attributed to either increased heavy metal emissions from Mount Erebus, or increased fluxes of heavy metals to the Antarctic ice sheet resulting from climate and meteorological modifications following the Tambora eruption.<br>A non-continuous series of Law Dome snow core samples dating from 1980 to 9185 AD were analysed to investigate seasonal variations in the deposition of Pb and Ba. It was found that Pb and Ba at Law Dome do exhibit seasonal variations in deposition, with higher concentrations of Pb and Ba usually observed during Summer and lower concentrations of Pb and Ba usually observed during the Autumn and Spring seasons. At Law Dome, broad patterns of seasonal Pb and Ba deposition are evident however these appear to be punctuated by short-term deposition events or may even be composed of a continuum of short-term deposition events. This variability suggests that complex meteorological systems are responsible for the transport of Pb and Ba to Law Dome, and probably Antarctica in general.
