Abstract:

Limited empirical data on the roles associated with boards of directors in nonprofit organizations are available, yet understanding the work of boards is vital to ensure the roles desired by organizational members and the roles required by the organization are being fulfilled. The roles or functions of boards in nonprofit organizations, as found in the management literature, were used to explore the roles associated with a sample of nonprofit amateur sport organizations. Data were generated from a survey of executive directors, volunteer presidents, and volunteer board members of sport organizations housed at Ontario's Provincial Sport Centre in Toronto. The survey data yielded a 4-factor subscale providing support for a theoretical perspective in assessing roles of the board in mission, planning, executive director, and community relations areas. Similarities and differences of respondents by gender and position on ratings of importance and performance for the board roles were explored with implications for board development discussed.

Abstract This study examines public transit boards of directors' role performance, prescribed activities that facilitate role performance, relationships between the roles and prescribed activities, and characteristics of boards and their members that affect members' involvement in board activities. It surveys public transit boards and analyzes the resulting data, using factor analysis, structural, and stepwise regression equations. The study finds that transit boards' role performance is enhanced by board members' involvement in contextual, analytical, strategic, interpersonal, and political activities, but not by involvement in board educational activities. Additionally, it finds positive relationships between many of the board member characteristics examined and most of the prescribed board activities. Exceptions to these positive relationships are also revealed. Negative relationships exist between the level of formal education of board members and such activities as setting aside time to learn about the organization and discussing future directions of the organization with other board members. Appointment of board members by state governments exerts a negative effect on board members' attentiveness to decision-making processes, and the use of long-range plan priorities in making strategic decisions. Service on other boards negatively affects members' involvement in transit board-related interpersonal activities.

Abstract:

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine how directors’ roles and social identities are shaped by gender and board life stage, using pre- and post-crisis Iceland as the setting. Recent theoretical work suggests the importance of directors’ monitoring and resource provision roles at certain board life stages; however, there is limited empirical evidence of directors’ identification with these roles as well as social role identification as a member of the board. Design/methodology/approach – The authors contribute empirical evidence from interviews with 23 corporate directors in Iceland on individual identification with the director role of monitoring and resource provision, relational identification with the CEO role and social identification as a member of the board. Findings – Prior to the crisis, male directors identified more strongly with resource provision and with their social roles and less strongly with monitoring roles. Compared to their male counterparts, pre-crisis female directors identified more strongly with monitoring and did not identify with their social roles. After the crisis, mature boards’ male director role identities were little changed; male directors continued to identify with resource provision and social identification, rather than monitoring, roles. Compared to pre-crisis, post-crisis female directors described greater identity with their resource provision roles and reported that male directors resented their attempts to fulfill their monitoring roles. In post-crisis, newly formed diverse boards, male and female directors reported very similar role identities which reflected balanced monitoring and resource provision roles, for example providing the board with ethical individual identities and unblemished reputations. The findings of this paper indicate that board composition and life cycle stage might have more impact on director identity than a pre- or post-crisis setting. These findings suggest implications for theory, practice and future research. Originality/value – This paper provides further empirical evidence of the roles male and female directors identify with on corporate boards. Its originality lies in the context of the board work in terms of newly formed and mature boards, before and after the financial crisis, with differing gender composition (male-dominated and gender-balanced boards).

Abstract:

Variation persists in the quality of board-level leadership of hospitals. The consequences of poor leadership can be catastrophic for patients. The year 2019 marks 50 years of public inquiries into healthcare failures in the UK. The aim of this article is to enhance our understanding of context-specific effectiveness of healthcare board practices, drawing on an empirical study of changes in hospital board leadership in England. The study suggests leadership behaviours that lay the conditions for better organisation performance. We locate our findings within the wider theoretical debates about corporate governance, responding to calls for theoretical pluralism and insights into the effects of discretionary effort on the part of board members. We conclude by proposing a framework for the ‘restless’ board from a multi-theoretic standpoint, and suggest a repertoire specifically for healthcare boards. This comprises a suite of board roles as conscience of the organisation, sensor, shock absorber, diplomat and coach, with accompanying dyadic behaviours to match particular organisation aims and priorities. The repertoire indicates the importance of a cluster of leadership practices to fulfil the purposes of healthcare boards in differing, complex and challenging contexts.

Abstract:

We mobilize theories of corporate governance and the theory of the social psychology of decision-making small groups to understand the operational process of the public hospital supervisory board. More precisely, we empirically test the mediation relationship of the decision-making process (effort norms, use of knowledge and skills, and conflict cognitive) between its structure (size, the composition, and diversity) and the performance of its roles (strategy, control, and service). A total of 320 questionnaires coming from members of the French public hospital supervisory board were collected. The aggregation of these individual answers generates a sample of 159 public hospital supervisory boards. The results of the tests of the assumptions of the research model confirm the fact that the structure of the supervisory board does not influence the performance of its roles. However, supervisory board effort norms positively affect the performance of its roles positively. Only effort norms and the use of knowledge and the skills partially play the role of mediator between the supervisory board structure and the performance of its roles. Practical and theoretical implications are exposed in the discussion.

PurposeThis paper aims to examine the prevalence of directors of US Fortune 500 firms who come from an academic background, and possible unique reasons for their appointment.Design/methodology/approachBased on extant theory of the resource‐dependence roles of non‐management directors, this study proposes and tests three hypotheses concerning distinctive reasons firms may appoint an academic to their boards. Academic directors may serve unique roles in increasing board demographic diversity, increasing firm intellectual capital, and providing links to local geographic constituents. Using year 2002 data from the US Fortune 500 firms, this study presents descriptive statistics and uses t‐tests and χ2 tests to examine hypotheses.FindingsFirms having academics on their boards have greater board demographic diversity than firms without an academic director. Firms with academic directors have the same average emphasis on knowledge‐based earnings as other firms. Academics associated with US top‐ranked universities tend to be more likely to hold board seats. Firms tend to select academic directors from the geographic regions where the firm is headquartered and have a slight tendency to use them on public affairs committees.Research limitations/implicationsThis study's findings highlight a unique non‐monitoring advantage of academic directors for firms seeking increased board diversity, and potential community/stakeholder liaisons.Practical implicationsFirms wishing to increase board diversity or improve relationships with other stakeholder groups may find academic directors useful to such efforts. Academic directors appear to be just as capable as other outside directors in developing firm intellectual capital.Originality/valueThis paper extends the present literature in resource dependence by examining academic directors, a new director subset. The paper is also unique in that it uses data collected from proxy statements, rather than survey data.

Abstract:

Boards of directors are governance bodies that serve important functions for organizations, ranging from monitoring management on behalf of different shareholders to providing resources. Board roles and characteristics vary widely among national cultures and, within each country, among different company types. Despite such variety, research on family business boards has been dominated by prescriptions and by the lack of an explicit recognition of family firm types characterized by different governance requirements. We argue that a contingency approach to defining board structure, activity, and roles offers useful guidance in understanding board contributions to family business performance. We develop a theory to show how board characteristics are a reflection of a family firm's power, experience, and culture makeup. This theory provides insight into descriptions of existing board choices and prescriptions for family firms interested in starting or adapting their board of directors.

Abstract:

The author reports on the corporate board practices in Ukraine. The roles of board of directors are mainly about control. The strategic and advisory roles are not developed. The mode of strategic involvement of the members of supervisory boards in Ukraine is mainly about reviewing and approving. Thus, the board of directors in Ukraine is "a rubber stamp". The degree of independence of directors is very low. Major board practices in Ukraine are: small number of independent directors on the board; low frequency of meeting of the board; small number of committees on the board; the management board influences the supervisory board. Board practices in Ukraine need a sort of recommendations, similar to those, made in UK at the end of 1990s, and at the start of the third millennium.

Abstract:

Purpose: The thesis aims to explore the roles that board directors undertake and understand whether there is an impact of the external organisational environment as well as several board characteristics on these roles. Design/ Methodology Approach: Building on existing literature a model is developed to test hypothesized relationships—i.e. directors’ roles with external environment and board characteristics. Measurements are designed—withdrawing them from the literature—to collect quantitative data from directors of UK organisations. The responses were collected from 115 directors working in UK organisations. Principal component analysis is conducted to reduce the data and propose a set of directors’ roles and correlation as well as regression analyses are utilised in order to test the hypothesised relationships. Findings: The results of the principal component analysis propose a set of six distinct roles for board directors, providing a new framework for future researchers. In addition, it is found that both the external environment and the board characteristics have some impact on what directors do, extending the limited empirical evidence found in the literature. However, the theoretical framework needs further examination and research. Limitations/Future Recommendations: The current thesis is evidenced by various limitations. Firstly, additional constructs can be added as determinants of the directors’ roles. Secondly, the response rate in the survey is low, which is regarded as a limitation, although there are limited studies offering quantitative results from board members.

Abstract:

In this thesis we will present a study on using lighting to enhance the gameplay of modern board games. Informed by observing board gaming events and getting engaged on forums we learned that besides debating strategies and the game mechanics, another regular discussion is on how to create good environments for games and playing. Based on our findings we frame the design space of light extended board games and propose three types of roles that lighting could play in board games to enhance the gameplay experience: (1) ambiance support for decorative purposes, eg. creating thematic atmosphere, (2) gameplay elements like thematic timers, and (3) game tools such as lighting objects that players can interact with. We designed a light extended board game prototype in order to evaluate several ambiance support and gameplay element role concepts. A Wizard-of-Oz test verified that players experience an enhanced focus using the light extended game. On the other hand, some ambiance support also distracted players. Thematic indications enhance sensory immersion, and randomly triggered elements can make the game more exciting by causing surprise and uncertainty, while reducing player e↵ort. Finally, we conclude this thesis by discussing results and outlining future work.

Abstract:

This study examines the impact of corporate governance reforms (SECP code in Pakistan) on board structural characteristics, board roles and firm performance. Related research questions are: a) how and which board roles mediate the relationship between board structural characteristics and firm performance? b) And what is the influence of corporate governance reforms on this relationship? Based upon the existing literature, a model has been developed that relates board structural characteristics (Proportion of non-executive directors, CEO Duality, Diligence and Independence of Audit Committee) with firm financial performance (ROA, Tobin Q) through intervening variables of dual board roles namely board monitoring role (Frequency of board meetings) and board resource dependence role (Board size) using multi-theoretic lens. This thesis uses an exclusive balanced panel data set of 200 companies listed on Karachi Stock Exchange to examine the impact of SECP code on the model for the two equal time windows. The first panel comprises of the data for the years from 1999-2001 which is the era before the implementation of SECP code and second panel comprises of data for the years from 2003-2005. The data set straddles the year 2002 which is the year when SECP code was enforced. The study contributes to a sparse empirical literature on boards using data from Pakistan via multi-theoretic perspective to advance some understanding that if the boards’ monitoring and resource provision roles are strengthened through board restructuring, the financial performance (Tobin Q) of the organization has shown signs of improvement. However, the main findings of the study indicate that the mediated relationship between board structural variables and firm performance is stronger in the post SECP code era. The study also shows that firm value (Tobin Q) increased in the post SECP code era; however, the implementation of SECP code didn’t reflect any improvement in the profitability of the firm (ROA). This study has significant policy implications. It recommends the constitution of independent nomination committee on the board and envisaging an evaluation criterion for the board members performance. The study concludes that overall companies adopted a box-ticking approach for reporting corporate governance. The study concludes lastly that the SECP code overall proved ground breaking and the corporate governance canvas in the country embraced the global calls for the reforms.

Title: LEADERSHIP ROLES FOR NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHERS IN SOUTHERN ILLINOIS SCHOOL DISTRICTS National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) are highly skilled in the latest research-based instruction and understand the importance of data-driven instruction and its impact on student learning. Because of their expertise, NBCTs have the potential to become leadership agents for producing high-performing schools. However, there is little to no evidence that NBCTs are being encouraged to use their expertise to improve school performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore NBCTs in leadership roles in southern Illinois schools. To accomplish this purpose, three areas were explored: the extent to which NBCTs participated in leadership roles in schools and the nature of those NBCT leadership roles, NBCTs' perceptions regarding their leadership role significance, and the enablers and barriers to NBCT leadership. Mixed methods were used to interpret, analyze, and draw conclusions from quantitative and qualitative data. The findings show that prior to November 2007, 150 NBCTs were actively teaching in Regional Areas V and VI in southern Illinois school districts. Sixty-two percent (n=93) of those NBCTs responded to the request that they participate in the survey. Of those responding to the survey, over one half (59%) of NBCTs were involved in leadership roles in schools. In addition to their regular teaching assignments, the majority of these NBCTs were involved in multiple leadership roles in the seven core areas of professional growth and staff development, mentoring, curriculum development, student achievement, grant writing, school improvement, and support groups. Forty-one percent (n=38) of NBCTs indicated not having a leadership role. To determine NBCTs' perceptions of leadership role significance, NBCTs ranked the significance of their leadership role(s). The findings show that NBCTs perceived their leadership role(s) to have the most significance when addressing the following areas: (a) improved classroom practices, (b) communicating and operating from strong ideals about teaching and learning, (c) coaching and facilitating teams of teachers in school wide professional and staff development, (d) disaggregating and analyzing test scores data to increase student learning, and (e) promoting shared goals and vision. NBCTs perceived less significance when their leadership role(s) were involved in collaborating with administrators in creating and sustaining internal conditions, acting as change agents to inspire peers, leading the recognition and celebration of school accomplishments, facilitating sessions on current theories and practices, and addressing and adapting to negative undercurrents within the organization. The enablers and barriers to NBCT leadership roles were explored. The findings show that factors associated with administrators, colleagues, and circumstances beyond one's control contributed to the enabling or barring of NBCT leadership in schools.

Abstract:

Since its inception in 1987, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards has certified over 112,000 accomplished teachers in its effort to professionalize teaching. During this same period, districts have added teacher leadership positions to improve the instructional practice of teachers and meet the complex needs of students, something the Board envisioned for National Board Certified Teachers (Carnegie Forum on Education and the Economy, 1986). However, there is a lack of research about if and how NBCTs holding formal teacher leadership roles utilize their expertise to improve instruction among their peers. This qualitative study sought to examine this issue through semi-structured interviews with forty-three teacher leaders who are National Board Certified Teachers in four public school districts and one state context. In this dissertation, I make the case that National Board Certification served as a career imprint (Higgins, 2005) that National Board Certified Teachers subsequently transferred to their work as teacher leaders and encouraged in their peers. The imprint consisted of capabilities in knowing one’s students, constructivist and differentiated instruction, and observing, describing, and reflecting continuously on instructional practice The cognitive aspects of the imprint included a belief that understanding one’s students was central to instruction, a commitment to assuming internal responsibility for student learning, and an assumption that reflecting continuously on their instruction would lead to improved teaching and learning. The participants indicated that, although National Board Certification prepared them as excellent teachers, they still needed organizational supports to extend what they learned through the process to other teachers. In the absence of some supports, they said that they could not fully transfer the imprint. In a few unique cases, NBCTs reported that they were able to alter the policy context in order to create a more favorable environment for the principles and practices from National Board Certification to take hold among other teachers. The findings suggest that NBPTS could work collaboratively with other organizations and policymakers to more explicitly advance the principles and practices underlying National Board Certification imprint as well as promote NBCTs as teacher leaders beyond their classrooms. Steps that NBPTS, districts, states, and teacher leaders could take to strengthen the extension of the Board imprint in order to improve instruction and learning in schools are outlined. Avenues for further research are explored.

Abstract:

The social and economic effects of high profile governance scandals such as the National Safety Council, HIH and Centro have triggered much debate, reform and research into predicting and preventing future failures. While this has meant director financial literacy is now recognised as a core capability required of each individual director, there has been little guidance on what this capability involves other than the very general statement of being able to 'read and understand financial statements'. This thesis presents the results of a Delphi study aimed at identifying the core concepts a director needs to master to be financially literate. Thirty-five experts drawn from accounting, education and practice agreed that to be financially literate a director must have a conceptual understanding of 24 basic accounting concepts and be able to independently apply this understanding to a strategic evaluation of the finances of the organisation they serve.

Abstract:

This study has examined how the board operates in order to facilitate for the development and success of the clean-tech start-up. Specifically the study has examined several aspects and characteristics of boards to determine which factors contribute towards creating an efficient board that best facilitates for the growth of its company.Through an in-depth analysis of five case firms, several key insights regarding boards in clean-tech ventures have been uncovered. The main constructs examined were the composition of the board, the engagement of the board into different board roles as well as the behavioral integration of the board. The case study has revealed that these constructs were all important determinants of the contribution of the board towards the growth and success of the clean-tech firm.Boards in clean-tech start-ups favor engagement in the service role, and this is also the role that has the strongest influence on the firm's strategic action capabilities. As the firm develops, the control role takes on a larger part of the focus of the board, due both to reduced effect of performing the service role and to pressure from shareholders. The behavioral integration of the board acts as a moderator of the contribution a firm can expect from its board. That means the more the board is integrated behaviorally the more it will be able to influence the firm. In many areas in the innovation of remote and autonomous systems, miniaturisation is leading to a huge increase in the available range of devices and their prevalence in everyday life. In Defence and particularly the naval domain however, the key area of progression is in the opposing direction. Rather than miniaturising, the remote and autonomous systems used in Defence are getting progressively larger in order to provide for increased payload, range and endurance. Navies may often find that they require their platforms to have the ability to cater for both large and small remote and autonomous systems, while also catering for the traditional operations of the navy with use of organic boats and helicopters. Such platforms, with the ability to support an increasingly wide variety of these off-board assets, will be significant for navies in increasing their capability and diversifying into different roles. With provision of sufficient allowances in the design, an adaptable design has the ability to be customised in its configuration. A flexible design has the ability to be reconfigured to fulfil a variety of roles, including those that utilise off-board assets. Allowances are also desirable to enable accommodation of future capability of unknown future high-tech systems so that the navies are able to maintain and increase a strategic technological advantage. This paper examines some of the aspects relevant to operating off-board assets in the design of a cost-effective naval platform that is capable, adaptable and flexible. Particular focus is given to the development of a hullform, seakeeping, general arrangement issues, upper deck arrangements, mission spaces, payload areas, the launch/recovery systems and interfaces.

In recent years, the policy and regulatory environment for intercity passenger rail in the United States has shifted dramatically. To support the resulting increase in intercity passenger rail planning activities, there is a need to understand the roles for passenger rail service in an intercity corridor, including who is using the service and how it is being used. Using on-board passenger survey data, this paper examines the role of the Hiawatha Service in the modal mix of the dense Milwaukee-Chicago intercity corridor. Primary trip purposes among Hiawatha Service travelers include personal trips, work commutes, and business trips. In the absence of the Hiawatha Service, more than 85 percent of passengers would travel via alternative travel modes. Consequently, it is estimated that the Hiawatha Service removes nearly 400,000 vehicles and 32 million vehicle-miles (51 million vehicle-km) traveled from the congested Milwaukee-Chicago corridor annually. As the nation moves forward with significant investment in intercity passenger rail, there are lessons to be learned from the Hiawatha Service, both for rail service planning and the formation of transportation policy. For rail planning, this research indicates that the proper service configurations can result in a variety of trip purposes being accommodated on the route; this raises additional challenges when considering service elements such as on-board amenities. From a policy perspective, these findings present a compelling argument for continued investment in intercity passenger rail because they demonstrate that the availability of high-quality passenger rail service in the right corridor can have meaningful impacts on highway congestion, regional economic development and job access, and air quality and greenhouse gas emissions.

Mathematical models of human posture on a rigid surface predict two types of balance instabilities — a static tipping instability and a dynamic instability leading to large oscillations. Although a common technique to improve balance performance is placing patients on balance boards, little research has modeled bipedal posture on rotational boards to better understand the mechanisms underlying improvement. In this study we present a mathematical model of human stance on a single-degree-of-freedom balance board with controllable torsional stiffness and delayed feedback. Through a bifurcation analysis we find that the standard manipulation of decreasing board stiffness can lead to very different instabilities depending on an individual’s neuromuscular time-delay. This dependency limits the ability to use traditional boards for training and identification of balance deficits. We show that implementing a controllable time-delay may be more beneficial and allow for the customization of treatment plans for individual with very different characteristics.

Abstract:

Abstract This paper presents a finite element (FE) model for simulation of trawl board and pipeline pullover interaction. The considered trawl gear system is referred to as a single otter trawl. This system consists of a single trawl net, two trawl boards and a fishing vessel which are connected by steel ropes. The trawl net was modelled by a new simplified trawl net model ensuring high computational efficiency. This trawl net model can simulate the correct tension level in the steel ropes connecting the trawl net and the trawl boards during the pipeline interaction phase, which is crucial to obtain a realistic trawl board interaction behaviour. The trawl boards were modelled as 6-DOF rigid bodies which were assigned a tailormade hydrodynamic load model based on a 3-parameter interpolation scheme both for the added mass and the forward-speed induced loads. Compared to previous work, the applied interpolation scheme was extended and improved in terms of parameter choice and number of parameters. The forward-speed induced loads consist of drag and lift loads. These loads were estimated by flume tank testing considering numerous trawl board configurations in terms of angle of attack, board-seabed inclination angle and gap between the trawl board and the seabed. Detailed measurements of the trawl board applied in the flume tank test were done to obtain an accurate description of the contact geometry, the centre of gravity and the rotational mass properties. The proposed FE model was validated against model test results of trawl board pull-over considering variation of pipeline height, pipeline diameter and trawling velocity. The FE model was found to give very good agreement with the model test in terms of build-up of pipeline interaction forces, peak force level and duration. The FE model is therefore regarded as applicable for use in design analysis of pipeline and trawl board pull-over interaction.

Specialist nursing practice in mental health, addiction and intellectual disability (MHAID) comprises a growing sector of public health demand, and yet this field is one of the least popular career pathways for student nurses (Happell et al., 2019a; Owen, 2021). International studies and personal observations by members of the research team as nurse educators suggest two key factors at play. First, student willingness to work in MHAID specialist roles is impacted by entrenched stigma and discrimination against people who experience mental distress, addictions and intellectual disabilities. Second, students have voiced their perceptions of specialist mental-health nursing as less important than general nursing. Working in MHAID is commonly seen as carrying little prestige, variety, challenge or opportunity for skill development; worse, such findings from surveys of final-year student nurses’ employment preferences have remained relatively unchanged over the last 20 years, at least (Wilkinson et al., 2016). With employers desperate for specialist MHAID staff, and education providers charged with meeting industry needs, how can nursing programmes begin to combat this bias and bring about attitudinal change? This paper describes a pilot initiative with Year 3 undergraduate student nurses in one Te Pūkenga subsidiary, which we believe shows considerable promise for a wider roll-out across the tertiary healthcare-education sector. A hui supported by Whitireia’s Community of Practice for Mental Health and Addiction within the School of Health and Social Services allowed students to interact with multiple industry stakeholders: District Health Board (DHB) partners; graduates working in the mental health and addictions sector, experts by experience; and the postgraduate New Entry to Specialist Practice in Mental Health teaching team. A subsequent survey evaluation confirmed the positive impact of the initiative regarding altering negative stereotypes of nursing roles within MHAIDs and increasing the number of students who may consider specialising in these areas, post-graduation.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) was founded in 1959 as an initiative of Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries and the United States to support the development of the region through an institution in which LAC countries would play a leading role through their majority capital and voting shares but with significant participation of the United States. The Agreement Establishing the Inter-American Development Bank (the Agreement; IDB 1959/1996) articulated the desired balance of responsibilities and power between LAC and the United States. It also provided that the IDB's governance would center around three governing bodies: the Board of Governors (BOG), the Board of Executive Directors (EXD), and Senior Management. The objective of this evaluation, requested by the EXD, was to assess the extent to which existing institutional arrangements at the IDB allow it to operate effectively and efficiently while providing sufficient accountability, transparency, and stakeholder voice in decision making. The evaluation focused on four dimensions: (1) effectiveness--the extent to which the IDB's governance arrangements allow the institution to effectively set strategic objectives, provide means to attain those objectives, and monitor performance; (2) efficiency--the degree to which the costs (in both money and time) of the IDB's governing bodies to perform their assigned roles and responsibilities are consistent with their priorities; (3) accountability and transparency--the extent to which the IDB's governance arrangements render the IDB governing bodies accountable to its shareholders for the responsibilities delegated to them, and the ability of secondary stakeholders, such as civil society, project beneficiaries, and private sector entities, to access information; and (4) voice--the extent to which the IDB's governance arrangements provide the shareholders and secondary stakeholders with an adequate voice in decision making.

An economic and population boom in the 1890s created opportunities for architects to find work and fame in Western Australia. Architecture, therefore, became a viable profession for the first time, and the number of practicing architects in the colony (and then state) quickly grew. Associations such as the Western Australian Institute of Architects were established to organise the profession, but as the number of architects grew and Western Australian society matured, it became evident that a role for government was required to ensure practice standards and consumer protection. In 1921, therefore, the Architects Act was passed, and, in the following year, the Architects Board of Western Australia was launched. This report traces the evolution and transformation of professional architectural practice since then, and evaluates the role and impact of the Board in its first century.
