Abstract:
At the age of eighteen, when I was approaching the end of my apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker, I made my first self designed piece of furniture. The master cabinetmaker or the client determined the form of most of the furniture made in our shop, and I seldom liked it. I did not even like the wood we used for the best pieces: walnut. I chose light colored ash for my bed and cupboard, and I made them so they looked good on all sides, with the same wood and the same careful work back and front. I disregarded the usual practice of expanding less time and care on the back because no one ever sees it anyway. At long last I was able to round off the edges only slightly without being corrected, running the sandpaper swiftly and lightly over the edges to soften their sharpness without losing the elegance and fineness of the lines. I barely touched the corners where the three edges met. I fitted the door of the cupboard into the frame at the front with a maximum of precision so that it closed almost hermetically, with a gentle frictional resistance and a barely audible sound of escaping air. It felt good working on this cupboard. Making the precisely fitting joints and exact shapes to form a whole, a complete object that corresponds to my inner vision, triggering in me a sense of intense concentration, and the finished piece of furniture added freshness to my environment. Abstract:
Models of non-European boats are commonly found in museum collections in the UK and throughout the world. These objects are considerably understudied, rarely used in museum displays and at risk of disposal. In addition, there are several gaps in current understanding of traditional watercraft from the Indian Ocean, the region spanning from East Africa through to Western Australia. Using models of a range of boats from thirteen museum collections throughout the UK, this Collaborative Doctoral Award PhD research considers the value of these objects for both researchers and museums. This thesis explores the potential of models to help us to understand traditional boats and boat building practices; some of which no longer exist. It achieves this through the production of a catalogue and analysis of a wide range of models. Then, through the presentation of two case studies it starts to explore a number of ideas about the physical attributes of these objects and how representative they are of full-size vessels. In addition, the wider cultural processes and contexts of the models are explored. It considers ideas about collecting, miniaturisation and the iconic symbolism of watercraft. It is anticipated the outcome of this project will be the utilisation of models of boats from the Indian Ocean, and throughout the world, in future studies of traditional watercraft. It is also hoped that this research will help museums to re-evaluate the significance of these objects in their collections, and to use them in displays in the future to tell a range of narratives.

Abstract:
Background: The eHealth era has fully arrived and initiatives to increase and improve utilization of ICT in health care organizations are made in Sweden as in many other countries. However, much focus in research take place after implementation, evaluating the effects of these initiatives, and very little focus is regarding why development projects actually result in certain functionality. Also, few are problematizing the concept of what eHealth services are and what their contribution shall be on the health care environment. Aim and Objective: The main aim of this research was to explore and understand different perspectives and assumptions regarding aims in an eHealth service development. Further, the aim was to create an understanding for how these trough social interaction and activity in an actual development project will construct actual functionality. Method: A qualitative research method was chosen and conducted from a social constructivist point of view. A case, consisting of an eHealth service development project in Jonkoping County Council, where used for data collection through observations and interviews with the participants in the project team. To support formulation of research questions and thematization, a research metaphor was developed. Results: The result of this thesis contains several theoretical and empirical based perspectives and assumptions on eHealth services. eHealth services are expected to support efficiency, information security, extensive usage, pushing bigger changes in the health care environment, be a new and exciting way of working, changing the roles of patients and caregivers and creating empowered and motivated patients. Other result show that, even if all participants felt pleased with the project result, it was hard to relate all choices in functionality to their effect on use quality and expected outcome from using them. Implications are made for how soft system aspects should be included in the project process in development of eHealth services for defining and managing use quality and its relation to system quality.

Abstract:
This study looks at vocational curriculum and pedagogy within the context of internal knowledge structures. Focused on a South African boat building qualification, to determine the nature of the qualification and the enacted curriculum with respect to the type of knowledge required in boat building labour processes. In particular the study focuses on the dual demands of innovation and reproduction in a global context. The study attempts to broaden two empirical studies done by Gamble (2004) and Coetzee (2011) into cabinet making and train driving respectively, and an HSRC commissioned study (2015) into artisanal work of the future. The study develops a conceptual framework of the logic of boat building work that meets the dual demands of innovation and reproduction. The conceptual framework develops the hypothesis that different types of knowledge are required to meet the competing demands of ‘innovation’ and ‘reproduction’. To explore the hypothesis, a labour process analysis is undertaken and then the structure and content of the qualification is examined using a coding device re-contextualised from a four-way knowledge schema developed by Gamble (2016a,) as well as an examination of the workshop component of the learnership and the learning material. The study finds that the curriculum attempts to teach in an old craft-based method of apprenticeship. It also finds that the qualification addresses the procedural and sequential requirements of boat building. The problem is that while this addresses the historical craft-based aspects of the trade, it does not support technological innovation. In conclusion, the contribution of this study is to the importance of knowledge in vocational education and, in particular theoretical scientific knowledge and, the role it plays in vocational qualifications and curriculum in a technologically developing world.

Abstract:
In this thesis the writer is examining the nature and historical development of Sudanese culture, through the examination of the activities of boat builders and users in the Sudan. Chapter One explains the aims of the study, definition and objectives of the subject of material culture. The state of material culture scholarship in the Sudan is also discussed with special emphasis on the study of boats in the Sudan. Chapter Two is a general survey of the history and develop= ment of boat building in the Sudan from ancient times to the modern and contemporary period. For this the writer depends on the archaeological evidence, works of classical writers, works of medieval Arab writers, works of the European travellers of the early modern period, works of the historians of the modern period and the ethnographic evidence collected by the present writer about the contemporary boat builders and users. This last category provides material for the contents of Chapters Three, Four and Six. Chapter Three is a documentary chapter about the work of the boat builder, describing his technical skills, how he assembles the hull planking and prepares the rigging, the processes he follows and the tools he uses. Moreover, the terms used to describe the parts of the boat and the tools are also documented. Chapter Four deals with the types of boats in the Sudan at different centres on the basis of their functions. Regional variations in construction, rigging details, technical terms are also dealt with. The adaptability of river transport to its surroundings and the problem of cultural borrowing and contact is also discussed. Chapter Five is a broad survey of the history of the different cultural influences that formed the fabric of the present Sudanese cultural setting. The materials cited in Chapter Six show how these different cultural influences described in Chapter Five have created the present cultural blend. This syncretism of diverse cultural influences is reflected by the terminology of boat building and handling, some texts of the song tradition and beliefs and practices in their historical and social perspective.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Marketing))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2008
The opening ceremony of the 29th Olympic Games displayed a historical tapestry of Chinese culture to the world. At the same time, the 2008 Games presented new opportunities for Chinese people to experience aspects of the outside world, which may have previously been closed to them. Aquatic sport is one such example, especially recreational sailing and yachting, which are novel concepts within Chinese society. Given China’s rapid economic growth, this burgeoning market has potential for South African exporters, including the recreational marine sector. However, South African manufacturers have not promoted their products, many of which are of a high standard, in this market. Are there barriers, which may prevent successful exports of marine products to China? Would a deeper understanding of China’s unique business culture assist the local boatbuilding industry to successfully present their products in China? The purpose of this study is to assist South African boat builders to expand their business operations in China by developing guidelines for marketing strategy formulation. The entire research study shows that there are indeed opportunities to market boats in China, while the market is mainly located in coastal cities. The research reviewed South African trade with China, successful entry of South African companies into the Chinese market, and shows that potential does exist for penetration of the Chinese market by South African marine industries. Based on a further review of the internal marketing environment in China, it is established that a unique feature of Chinese business culture, termed Guanxi, might be a major barrier for penetration of the Chinese boat market by the South African marine industry.

Abstract:
This thesis is an examination of the history of Salter Bros Ltd and the firms connected with it. Founded in 1858, it became not only one of the most important businesses associated with the recent history of the Upper Thames, but also a significant employer in Oxford. The study takes a thematic approach, which involves examining the five main areas of the firm’s commercial activities, which were: providing services for the sport of rowing (chapter 1), boat-building (chapter 2), boat-letting (chapter 3), passenger boat operating (chapter 4) and property development (chapter 5). This thesis draws on the firm’s archive, which has previously been unavailable to scholars. The mainly quantitative data from the archive is contextualised by reference to wider qualitative sources, although there is not always much comparative information to draw on. Finally, it focuses on the evolution of the workforce, which shows how the business managed to survive both the impact of the industrialisation of Oxford in the twentieth century and some of the challenges associated with family firms (chapter 6). By examining the areas shown above, the work sheds light on our understanding of (1) the socio-economic context of Oxford and the Thames, (2) the development of different forms of water-based leisure, and (3) how a family firm overcame some of the classic weaknesses of such businesses. Chapter 1 analyses the contribution that the firm made to the sport of rowing. The family moved to a riverside tavern in the mid-1830s and this resulted in heavy involvement with the rowing scene. They made a successful transition from professional oarsmen to successful racing boat-builders, which led to John and Stephen Salter moving to Oxford to start their own business in 1858. By exploiting the strong local rowing scene they built their firm up to be the market leader in the 1860s. Supplying craft for the Oxford and Cambridge (university) boat race was important for helping the business gain worldwide fame and, although Salters’ lost the ascendency in the 1870s, it provided a wide range of services for the sport until the second half of the twentieth century. It then slowly became divorced from the rowing scene and, despite a brief renaissance in the 1970s, the company finally bowed out of racing boat construction at the end of the 1980s. Chapter 2 explores the development of the boat-building side of the business. The firm was a major producer of craft and it was especially busy in the late 1920s and late 1970s, when new products helped to stimulate demand. By examining four areas of expertise (steel manufacturing, motorised boats, corporation craft and fibreglass construction) it becomes clear that the business was relatively slow to embrace new technology. Yet although it was not particularly innovative, Salters’ successfully exploited a number of emerging markets, like supplying craft for council-run boating lakes from the 1920s onwards. After a period of decline in the 1960s, the firm’s boat-building department was briefly revived by the introduction of fibreglass construction in the following decade, although this brought to an end skilled craftsmanship in the industry. Salters’ had to be flexible in order to survive, as is shown by the contract work it took on during the two World Wars, but in the second half of the twentieth century the firm’s focus moved away from boat-building towards providing leisure services. Chapter 3 examines the nature and timing of the rise of pleasure boating on the Thames and Salters’ role in promoting it. The railway destroyed much of the carrying trade on the river, but the waterway gained a new lease of life by the rise of leisure activities on it. Different types of boating were popular at different times and certain waterside locations were busier than others, but it is possible to discern short-term peaks in pleasure boating on the Upper Thames, as a whole, in the early 1890s and either side of the First World War (although the river became busier still after the Second World War). There were many factors contributing to the rise of leisure on the waterway, but Salters’ helped to popularise ‘the Thames trip’ between London and Oxford, which was linked to the growth of camping. The firm’s fortunes were also closely tied to the local market and by the late 1880s it had one of the largest fleets of rental craft in the country. Salters’ had to diversify according to changing fashions in pleasure boating, but after the 1920s there was a slow reduction in the number of craft it operated, until it stopped boat-letting altogether in the early 1990s – although this side of the business was revived a decade later, albeit on a smaller scale. Chapter 4 explores the firm’s involvement with passenger services on the waterway. The long-distance steamboat trips took much longer to become established on the Upper Thames, because of the logistical problems caused by having to pass through locks. Salters’ was the first business to make a success of running between Oxford and Kingston and it did this by forging a close association with the railway, which opened up the river to the day-trip market, and by building up its fleet to establish a monopoly over the long-distance journey. The service had to overcome many challenges, but one of the most serious problems it faced was the growth in pleasure boating after the Second World War. Although passenger numbers on the steamers peaked in the 1970s, general traffic on the river also reached record levels, which caused significant delays and forced the firm to end the through-service between Oxford and Kingston. Furthermore, by catering for the growing demand for shorter round trips Salters’ was drawn into direct competition with other companies that were already focused on this market. By the end of the twentieth century, the firm was no longer dominating the waterway and it was heavily reliant on income from both its home city of Oxford and private parties. Chapter 5 examines the extent and significance of the property the firm came to occupy. Salters’ acquired many new properties in order to expand the business and the firm’s success also enabled it to accumulate residential accommodation, which was part of the employment package offered to its staff, as well as being a source of rental income. The commercial sites were useful for preventing competitors from encroaching on the firm’s territory, whilst they were also subsequently used for further development. Most importantly, the property was a reservoir of capital that Salters’ relied upon in times of financial hardship. Chapter 6 focuses on how the workforce evolved in the twentieth century, which sheds light on how the business survived both the industrialisation of Oxford and some of the challenges associated with family firms. Salters’ went from being an employer with a highly skilled and local workforce to one that had fewer specialised craftsmen and which recruited mainly from outside the city. This was symptomatic of the city’s employment market that had been transformed by the motor industry in the interwar period, as well as the firm’s greater focus on its passenger boats, which was connected with it. Salters’ had to be flexible to accommodate the changes, but it was unable to compete with the high wages offered in the car factories and a shortage of local labour meant that it not only struggled to retain employees, particularly its skilled craftsmen, but standards of discipline also deteriorated. Nevertheless, the impact of wage competition was mitigated by the firm’s paternalism and the considerable appeal of working on the passenger boats. The latter offered an enjoyable lifestyle that was very different from the working environment of other waterway communities. The Salter family also played an important part in the survival of their company.

Abstract:
Understanding the true behaviour of impacted structures is the only way to assess their robustness under exceptional events such as vehicle collision. The primary objective of this master’s thesis was to perform a finite element parametric investigation on the influence that some parameters have in steel buildings subjected to vehicle impacts. The parameters chosen for the study, involved uncertainties in the material definition and in the load configuration of the bolts used in the impacted column end-connections. By using the Abaqus software, a finite element model of the structure has been created. The five storey steel building considered has been modelled in a simplified manner with the exception of the impacted area which, instead, has been defined in a more detailed fashion. During the simulations, different preload conditions have been used, comparing cases with and without the preload force. Regardless its variation, it has not been observed any increase in the structural resistance. On the other hand, the simulation provided interesting results for what concerns the material variations in the bolts. Although the changes have been small in magnitude, the effect on the structural response during the impact was remarkable. For all the cases considered, an increase of the material ductility, achieved by increasing the ultimate strain at failure, entailed higher resistance of the connections. Various failure modes have been observed when the material properties have been changed. Having clarified the influence of the assumptions made, the results provided helpful information in sight of future studies. Although the model still needs to be validated, the research clarified which of the parameters investigated are to be collected with more attention. Keywords: Vehicle collision, steel building, FE model, Abaqus/Explicit, parametric investigation, bolt preload, bolt material.

Szabo, Trevor Alexander. "Development and Validation of a Twelve Bolt Extended Stiffened End-Plate Moment Connection." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/78230.

Full text
Abstract:
Three end-plate moment connection configurations are prequalified for special moment frames for seismic applications in AISC 358-10. The eight bolt extended stiffened connection is the strongest of the three configurations, but it can only develop approximately 30 percent of currently available hot-rolled beam sections. The strength of this configuration is limited by bolt strength. There is a need for a stronger end-plate moment connection, hence the reason for the development and validation of a twelve bolt configuration. Equations were developed for the design procedure using various analytical methods, which included yield line analysis and an effective tee stub model. An experimental program was conducted, which consisted of the full-scale cyclic testing of four end-plate moment connections. The intention of the testing was to develop and validate the design procedure, and prequalify a new twelve bolt configuration. A displacement-controlled loading protocol was applied according to AISC 341-10. The experimental results showed that the model for thick end-plate behavior is conservative by 6.7%, the model for end-plate yielding is conservative by 8.8%, and the model for bolt tension rupture with prying conservatively predicts by 18.5%. The specimens that were designed to form a plastic hinge in the beam fractured in a brittle manner. The deep beam specimen fractured in the first 2% story drift cycle, and the shallow beam specimen fractured in the second 3% story drift cycle. The fracture of the prequalification specimens was determined to have been caused by stiffeners of high yield stress relative to the beam yield stress.

Abstract:
Due to different reasons, the population of several countries in the world, including Brazil, have seen a number of accidents related to building collapses, localized faults of some of its structural components or other problems with building subsystems, which result in significant disturbances and in risks to users health and safety. In Brazil, special focus has been given on the Performance Standards and the perception that management appropriate schemes of building conservation are fundamental to provide greater environmental and economic buildings sustainability. With this in mind, several Brazilian states and cities have begun to elaborate inspection laws, aiming at the compulsory of Buildings Inspection. This initiative is reflected in international experiences, which see inspection as an activity incorporated into the routine of conservation and buildings maintenance. The purpose of this thesis is to make a theoretical contribution to the construction of a Brazilian inspection system through the identification of good practices and investigating recurrent deterioration patterns in the inspection reports of the cities of Porto Alegre and Capão da Canoa. The research methodology consisted of a qualitative step, which investigated and analyzed documentation of the international and Brazilian context, aiming to identify good practices related to the scope of inspection laws, inspector profile, periodicity and report structure - and a quantitative step characterized by the Analysis of more than 600 reports obtained from city halls of the target cities of this study The capital of Rio Grande do Sul was the first Brazilian city, to have a legislation on conservation of front elements (Law no. 6323/88), such as marquees and other elements in balance and in 2014 approved the Decree No. 18,574, aiming at the inspection of the entire building. Capão da Canoa has had a law on the subject since 2009 after the accident with the Santa Fe Building. The study identified that in relation to the scope, the laws seek to ensure the safety of buildings; As for the inspector's profile, we can see a good practice in Australia that has classes of inspectors and places able to certify the professionals; As to periodicity, basically age is the conditioning (the older the building, the shorter the time frame for the inspection). Regarding the deterioration patterns, it was verified that in Internal and External Vertical Wall Systems, the infiltration humidity reaches 50% of the sample of Capão da Canoa and 27% of the buildings surveyed in Porto Alegre. It is also recurrent the presence of cracks and painting deterioration. In the subsystem of coatings, the standards refers to loss of adhesion, especially in the sample of Porto Alegre, where 36% of the buildings registered this anomaly that impacts the requirements of durability, maintenance, safety in use and operation. In the analysis of the subsystem structure, the highest occurrence was corrosion of the reinforcement, reported in 52% of the buildings of the city of Capão da Canoa. In Porto Alegre it is recurrent the registration of fissures that impact the watertightness and durability of the building. In general, it was evidenced that the inspection reports are important sources for analyzes related to the useful life and durability of the buildings.

Over the course of the 2007/2008 school year, I visited three classrooms to investigate the effectiveness of Augusto Boal’s drama method, Image Theatre, with elementary-aged students. In Image Theatre, the practitioners and students use their bodies to create frozen images, which in turn become the focus of collaborative meaning- making. I applied the reflective practitioner methodology in my work as it allowed me to adapt to the rapidly altering situations that arise in elementary classrooms. Through reflecting on my interactions with students, I refined a set of teaching techniques that worked best to integrate Image Theatre into the classroom and ultimately into the curriculum. My research provides a qualitative analysis of the power of Image Theatre to foster student dialogue, develop empathic learning, and introduce conflict awareness techniques. My thesis highlights some specific exercises and theoretical frameworks that guided my work and produced the most effective results. The effects of applying Image Theatre to elementary-aged classrooms has not been extensively studied in the past and my research attempts to address this academic gap. It is my hope that future researchers will adapt my activities and further demonstrate the capacities of this theatre technique. Ultimately, I hope that Image Theatre methods can find a place in standard curricula.

Summary The wireless technology realizes the new era of mobility and changes the traditional utilization of Internet in recent years. “M-Taiwan” proposed by Taiwan government become one of the most important project in the next10 years major to migrate Taiwan from developing country into developed country. In order to realize the expectation of this project, more than two billion NT dollar is invested by Industrial Development Bureau Ministry of Economic Affairs every year to establish several demonstration site with different business models. Several counties in Taiwan imitate BOT pattern in the use of win-win policy to leverage the resource of government and enterprises. However, the wireless projects face the severe difficulties for example city plan in Kaoshiung is stopped and the Taipei city plan is postponed. M-project of Taipei county also failed on the first bidding tried to start third one. By investigation of the existing cases that the business model is not so profitable due to the limited applications especially killer applications. It is also hard to find the way to differentiate from the mobile operator and traditional ISP(Internet Service Provider). This become our motivation to study the business model and the roles of both government and enterprises. Our research topics include the following items: 1. To plan the appropriate network structure as the feasible solution with the difference of area and user’s demand. 2. To analyse financial situation and manage content from management viewpoint, confirming the optimal target to predict future. 3. To think about how to build rational planning (BOT plan) and offer rational resource for films from government viewpoint. 4. To analyse and predict the wireless development of what it will be in the future .

Energy saving is one of the central themes these days. The buildings sector is largely responsible for high energy consumption, mainly by increasing demand for indoor thermal comfort. Thus, greater thermal efficiency in buildings becomes a very important issue. The new buildings have already been presenting solutions that promote reduced spending on air conditioning. However, mostly existing buildings do not include any solutions accordingly, therefore it is essential to revitalize them in this area. The buildings located in historic districts have a historical, cultural and huge social value, so their rehabilitation can never get over the loss of identity. The historical center of Coimbra has a high number of restrictions aimed at the rehabilitation of their buildings. Based on these restrictions, the aim of this work is to study the thermal rehabilitation of a building located in this historical center, a house of students: Real República do Bota-Abaixo, without misrepresenting its historical identity. To this end, it was simulated, using the energy simulation tool, Ecotect , the annual spending on air conditioning and the annual hours of discomfort before and after the proposed improvements imposed : insulating roofs , ceilings and floors , upgrading of existing glazing and control of air infiltration rates . This study was complemented with an analysis using the RCCTE. As a result of the rehabilitation solutions it was shown that is possible to have important reductions in energy consumptions for air conditioning. It was verified a decrease of 77% in the global needs, 85% in heating and 54% in cooling. These solutions have led the building to be in accordance with the RCCTE. In resume, it is proved that it is possible historic buildings to offer decent thermal comfort without high energy costs while maintaining their historical, cultural and social heritage.

The purpose of this study is that using financial analysis to explore which method is better by using Building Public Properties or BOT to construct the public columbarium. After case study, the BOT project shows that the net present value (NPV) is -26.92 million; IRR is 5% ; self-liquidating ratio is 0.66. The preliminary assessment finds that BOT method is infeasible. In addition, if the case is done by Building Public Properties, the central and local governments grant a subsidy of $21.6 million, insufficient amounts can be borrowed from the National Treasury Department Local Construction Fund. In this case, net present value (NPV) of the project is 38.96 million ; IRR is 8%; self-liquidating ratio is 1.31. After financial analysis, the Building Public Properties method is the better option.

As the government increasingly value the conservation and reuse of historic buildings, the policy formulation and outcome examination have become a public concern. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the case of Boan 84, a registered historic building in Taipei, and to investigate the role of private sector in the process of its conservation and reuse. On the one hand, this thesis will reveal the typical problems that occur in the design and management of the reused historic buildings; on the other, it will also provide a timely reflection on the current fever of historic reuse. Located in Dadaocheng, the building of Boan 84 used to house the Shuntian Surgery Hospital. Since 2006, a series of refurbishment and reuse plans undertaken by the private sector began to turn the building back to its original appearances, register as a historic building in 2009, and finally become a popular art space. However, the involved private sector throughout the process has been faced with many technical and management problems. This thesis through the methods of interview and questionnaire survey will explore the process and use the case of Boan 84 as an experience for other private-sector organizations who are currently participating in historic conservation and reuse.

Abstract:
This thesis describes the reflection and analysis carried out around a professional project undertaken in Timor-Leste, between the months of Apriland October 2009, at IOM (International Organization for Migration), with the goal of improving construction practices in Dili. After the devastating effects of the political crises in 2006, and the conflicts that followed, more than 100,000 people sought shelter in refugee camps in the centre of Dili. Only three years later was the return of the refugees to their original communities initiated. The IOM, whose mandate defines as responsible, amongst international organizations, for the accompaniment of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), was in charge, in partnership with the Ministry of Social Solidarity of Timor-Leste, which supervises displaced persons, of organizing, managing and monitoring IDP camps and their closure. According to national strategies adopted for the return of IDPs, the government assumed responsibility for co-financing the rehabilitation of homes destroyed during the conflict. As a complement to this action, IOM invested in the technical capacity building of families, a large majority of which resorts to self-construction. To this end IOM launched a project aimed at improving construction practices through the publication and dissemination of a Manual of Good Construction Practices. Since the issue of improving construction practiceswas seen as an opportunity to induce change in these practices, the Handbook was structured to provide technical training of beneficiaries, empowering them as skilled decision makers in the process of rebuilding their homes. The concepts and methodologies that have led this process are the subject of discussion in this study.

Clinical research is essential for advancing scientific knowledge and improving society's quality of life.Clinical studies are a key process in the clinical research value chain as they provide high levels of evidence and significant results about drugs, medical devices, health data, safety of interventions or health services. All clinical studies require quality and safety guarantees oriented mainly to the patient, which requires multidisciplinary coordination based on meeting the needs of citizens and supported by principles and procedures for conducting research, ensuring compliance with applicable ethical and legal provisions.Currently, in the health sector, the quality of the services provided is a requirement in the management of health organizations because it reveals significant gains in competitiveness and credibility and this factor should be extended to clinical research.A clinical research center provides early access to innovative treatments and represents the interface between the sponsor and the patient. A center must guarantee the conditions to the sponsor for carrying out quality research through specialized infrastructures that guarantee the speed, efficiency, transparency, confidentiality of the study, but above all the safety of the participants. This work aims to answer the question "What are the criteria for capacity building a clinical research center?" and to understand if the capacity building of a clinical research center in professional organizations that develop health research involves the development of existing capacities and/or the application of tools that improve their effectiveness and efficiency.Through a literature review, it is intended to identify the criteria and organizational competencies necessary for a clinical research center to develop its activity, guaranteeing the protection of participants, the credibility of the data, the efficiency and effectiveness of research and the compliance with applicable ethical and regulatory requirements.

This project’s study subject is the rehabilitation of cultural heritage, as an instrument that contributes to the preservation of a collective memory that needs to be adapted to today’s reality. With this in mind, we come across the importance of the subject of converting use as a mean to intervene in ancient heritage, making it possible to reuse old built structures in current society. This topic allows for reflection about architectural and urban thinking of a city, based upon memory and past. One of the goals of this proposition is to try to understand which are the needs of the city of Portimão, suggesting the creation of a space that serves not just a limited group of people, but contributes to unifying the population. Another goal is to get to know the importance that recreational centers had and still have in the advertising of cultural sites and gathering of the community. What impact did they have when they were first created, and what is their role in current communities? Given that these are in dire straights as to continue their work for the bennefit of society, would the rehabilitation of the Boa Esperança building revitalize an area of the city, which was once very busy, and bring back the memories of a people through modern times, modern technologies and new kinds of activities? Deep down, the goal is to try to understand the importance of cultural heritage rehabilitation as an instrument that assures the preservation of memory, meaning, the memory of a past that we should transfer onto the future.

Abstract:
In the present research, which focuses on storage conditions, we intend to conduct an approach around the new paradigms of visibility and access to the collections, due to the opening of the storage areas to the public, exploring the theme of visible storage and or visitable storage as well as the visible storage gallery or open storage system, implemented in museums. In order to a better understanding of moderns archetypes it is made a terminological synthesis of the various concepts introduced. Based on the international reality, with particular emphasis on the European situation and especially Portugal, in a preventive conservation perspective we intend to present the current practices and a benchmark of good practices to develop in this domain. We highlight the importance of the visits that were made in the context of this study, as well as the information obtained from the questionnaire prepared and sent to several international and national institutions. It is analysed as a case study the storage area of the City Hall of Matosinhos, especially the fieldwork carried out at the level of monitoring the environment conditions of the storage room, which will be of extraordinary relevance in terms of preventive conservation when it will be carried out the transition of of artworks of the autarchy in storage for the future storage space of Multifunctional Building of the Serralves Foundation in Senhora da Hora, Matosinhos. Embracing the central theme of this research was conceived a project to implement a visitable reserve in the reserve area for CMM in the Multifunctional Building in the Serralves Foundation, to build.
