Freer, Wendy. "Canal boat people, 1840-1970." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1991. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/10946/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to examine the social and economic standing of the men, women and children who lived and worked on the canal boats of England and Wales during the decline of canal carrying between 1840 and 1970. Its main purpose is to analyse how and why this social group, with its peculiarly anachronistic way of life and work, survived until well into the second half of the twentieth century. It discusses the range of survival strategies open to the group ranging from family, through community, voluntary agencies and the state as providers of welfare, together with the relationship between these agencies. This has involved an investigation of kinship patterns among land-based and boat-based boat families and the relationship between boat people and the rest of society. Of particular concern has been the way in which the boat community emerged as a distinctive and cohesive social group based on occupation rather than class. It has not generally been appreciated that the decline of this industry was very long and, up until the First World War, quite gradual. Thus, opportunities for enterprise and remunerative employment continued for long after the appearance of the steam locomotive. At most times throughout the history of canal carrying, boatmen were able to earn money wages on a par with, or even in excess of those paid to manual workers in other old staple industries. This thesis also shows that the decision to live on board was a matter of regional custom and personal choice and not merely a result of straitened economic circumstances. Furthermore, it appears that the majority of those men who did take their families on board retained a house on land. Nevertheless, those who chose to live on board with their families did so at considerable social cost and thus it emerges that social deprivation and some forms of poverty are not merely a reflection of low pay.

Abstract:
The thesis will examine how the Australian government through its Prime Minister JohnHoward presented the asylum seekers on “MV Tampa” ship as a threat jeopardizing Australian security. Using the theory of securitization as a methodological framework and Critical Discourse Analysis as utilized by Fairclough’s Three-dimensional Framework transcripts of interviews by John Howard will be analyzed in order to expose the securitization process that framed the asylum seekers as an existential threat that needed extraordinary measures.

Chou, Cynthia. "Money, magic and fear : identity and exchange amongst the Orang Suku Laut (sea nomads) and other groups of Riau and Batam, Indonesia." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 1994. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/230199.

Full text
Abstract:
The central focus of my thesis is the symbolism of money and the power it holds in the Riau archipelago and Batam of Indonesia to affect the nature of social relationships. These social relationships in turn affect the different forms of exchange that take place in the archipelago. In particular, I am exploring the meaning and moral implications of monetary and commercial exchanges in contrast to exchanges of other kinds that take place between the Orang Suku Laut and other Malay and non-Malay communities. The Orang Suku Laut are regarded as the Orang asli Melayu (indigenous Malays) of Riau. Yet in the interaction between the Malays and Orang Suku Laut, there exists much fear between them with constant accusations of being poisoned and harmed by one and the other through practices of magic and witchcraft. This stems from the Malays' perception of the Orang Suku Laut as a "dangerous, dirty and unprogressive people. " The Orang Suku Laut are regarded as preferring a life of nomadism, and one without a religious orientation towards Islam, as opposed to a life of sedentism guided by the Islamic religion. This thesis explores how this self and other perceptions which have shaped the image of the Orang Suku Laut, have become enmeshed in the exchange economy of the Orang Suku Laut and the Malays.

Smit, Jack H. "The political origins and development of Australia’s people smuggling legislation: Evil smugglers or extreme rhetoric?" Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2011. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/419.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the Australian State response to the voyage facilitators of maritime asylum seekers, commonly known as ‘people smugglers’. It does so by examining a number of Parliamentary debates and previously confidential Cabinet papers. Negative depictions of asylum seekers and their voyage facilitators as well as the prevailing political discourse is critically explored while Parliamentary debates are analysed using Critical Discourse Analysis. The research questions the ways Australian legislators justified the criminalisation of these voyage facilitators and investigates whether political elites were sufficiently informed about the circumstances of maritime asylum seeker journeys and the unique nature of their travel arrangements. The analysis is conducted within the container of established asylum seeker rights as formulated by the United Nations is its 1951 Refugee Convention. Within the Australian context these are framed as the “rights of unauthorised arrivals”. By examining de-classified Fraser government documents, the thesis presents evidence of the State’s intent to criminalise ‘people smugglers’ as part of a two-fold strategy, aiming to also punish maritime asylum seekers for arriving uninvited. This strategy was first proposed under the Fraser government soon after the first asylum seeker vessels arrived in Australia during the late 1970s. The research findings indicate that the increasingly harsh measures imposed by successive Australian governments targeting smugglers and passengers represents an increasingly punitive and continuous series of policy proposals and parliamentary discourse, where the voyage facilitators became the recipients of criminal labels such as “traffickers” and “smugglers” while 1980 legislative measures determined them to be serious criminals. The research also analyses legislative measures aiming to impose criminal sanctions implemented by the Howard government in 1999, and legislation that established a wide range of extended powers to Australian border officials in dealing with ‘unauthorised’ vessels entering Australian waters. Both legislative measures were responses to a number of undetected entries by vessels with Chinese migrants in the lead-up to the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. This section of the research explores the dominant “national security” narrative constructed by Australia’s conservative political elites in order to justify the legislation criminalising ‘people smugglers’. The research presents documented evidence that the Howard government withheld details of the Chinese arrivals from Parliament for ‘operational reasons’ and that the Immigration Department attempted to influence political debates by means of distributing a manipulative briefing document in the Parliament. Post-research participant interviews present evidence that Prime Minister John Howard’s Immigration Minister Phillip Ruddock held the view that nobody has the right, neither by air nor by boat, to enter Australia to seek asylum. The research concludes that the legislative measures criminalising ‘people smugglers’ were not presented in order to fight transnational people trafficking but that they were instead presented and passed by the Parliament to ‘stop the boats’ and to further deter assisted asylum voyages into Australia by regarding such ventures as illegal without due regard for the UN Refugee Convention.

Abstract:
Theater
M.F.A.
This thesis documents a production of the French playwright Moliere's comedy Tartuffe at Temple Repertory Theater in Philadelphia. Set in Philadelphia's Main Line, this production provides an updated version of the play that comments on religion in contemporary America. Tartuffe is one of the best comedies written by Moliere. Banned for many years, it deranged people and touched a very tender spot in 17th century French society. America has a very different approach to religion than France. The many churches in existence make this country a deist democracy as opposed to the French secular state. The use of religion in politics, the "in God we trust" on the dollar bill, and seeing people pray in restaurants before their dinner have dictated this production be set in contemporary America. The use of clown techniques helped in finding American archetypes that would fit the characters. Directing choices, designers and actors created a world that tells the story of a rich American family threatened by the extremist religious discourse of a hypocrite. All these choices try to honor the heightened style of Moliere's language and, here, of Ranjit Bolt's very modern and fluid translation.

Davis-McElligatt, Joanna Christine. "'In the same boat now': peoples of the African diaspora and/as immigrants: the politics of race, migration, and nation in twentieth-century American literature." Diss., University of Iowa, 2010. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/485.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, I take seriously Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assertion that even though non-indigenous peoples in America "may have come over on different ships," they are all, in spite of and in the face of their particular ethnic, racial, gender, class, tribal, or national identities, nevertheless together "in the same boat now." In particular, in this project I reconstruct and reinterpret the process of migration, assimilation, and the realization of full sociopolitical participation in the United States in terms of the relationship between peoples of African descent--who were compelled to migrate as slaves across the Middle Passage, and who also voluntarily immigrated from various localities within the Black Atlantic--and select groups of immigrants from other locations around the globe. In my thesis, I concentrate on novels by William Faulkner, Paule Marshall, James Baldwin, Gayl Jones, and cartoonist Chris Ware, and examine closely how these authors, in their respective texts, work to restructure, reimagine, and thereby challenge the enshrined American narratives of national belonging and acculturation through literary constructions of the identities and experiences of peoples of African descent, as migrants themselves, in tandem with their social, political, economic, sexual, racial, and cultural engagements with other immigrants to the nation-state. In the introduction to my text, I survey and carefully synthesize diverse literary, historical, sociological, postcolonial, and feminist approaches to and theories of the problems of race, immigration, and nationalization, and formulate a new critical interdisciplinary framework for the mutual (de)construction of peoples of African descent as immigrants among immigrants in America.

The accelerated aging of societies and the challenges it entails make nursing homes one of the main social responses in Portugal regarding the provision of care to older people. Thus, it is important to deepen the quality of these services, identifying and analyzing “Good Practices” in formal care. This research thus starts from the question: "How are the norms related to good practices in formal care delivery to the elderly implemented in the context of a residential structure for the elderly and how are they viewed by parties involved?". Aiming to “analyze how the norms related to good practices in formal care for the elderly are reflected in a residential structure context”, the research developed expected to analyze if these norms are mirrored, and in what way, in the institutional reality of residential structures for the elderly population. Through a case study, an nursing homes has been selected where participant observation was performed and surveys conducted by interview with the technical director, the elderly and formal caregivers. Both the grid that guided the participant observation and the construction of the interview guides have been based on dimensions and indicators extracted from the Social Security Institute Manual of Good Practice. The set of results made it possible to highlight good practices: tenderness in the act of caring, good mood of the caregivers, staff ratio in relation to the residents' needs, communication, promotion of autonomy in carrying out daily life activities, occupation and entertainment, patience, availability, attention and love. On the other hand, inappropriate behaviors are also reflected and suggestions for improvement are elaborated. The reflection agreed here is especially important in the studied ERPI, but with the potential to inform other caregivers to older people.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Social media has grown in popularity and is used for several purposes. One of these purposes is news, where users receive news via a social media service. Twitter is one such service. Twitter is a website where users can follow other accounts to read their posts. Twitter has been the platform for several operations where bot agents deliberately spread fake news. This study investigated through a survey how well different Swedish social groups could distinguish between accounts controlled by humans or bots on Twitter. One hundred sixty-two participants had an average of 55.9% correct across all profiles. Human and bot profiles were correctly identified 63.7% of the time and 48.1%, respectively. Groups that were young, academics, or familiar with Twitter had more correct ratings on average. The results suggest that it is generally difficult for people to distinguish between profiles. Participants had an easier time identifying humans than bots. Participants mainly looked at the content of a tweet and the language to make their judgments. However, the older groups, non-academics and those unfamiliar with Twitter, had significantly fewer participants.

Nowadays, the theme "governance and people management" has been gaining worldwide renown. Its origin goes back to corporate governance and its practices were introduced in the public administration in search of solutions to challenges such as the scarcity of public resources and improvements in quality in service delivery. This research had as objective to identify the opportunities of improvement in the good practices of governance and people management of the Brazilian Navy (MB). In order to achieve this goal, we tried to identify this theme in the literature; To know the recommendations of the Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) and to elaborate a panorama of the governance and management of people in MB, identifying the good practices already implemented and the respective opportunities for improvement. The method used for this study was the case study, with the collection of information through questionnaires and unstructured interviews. The results showed that the MB staff sectors adopt on average 75% of the good practices listed in the study. It was verified that the minimum of practices adopted was in the management sector of the inactive and pensioners, and the maximum in the management of the military personnel. The results also revealed opportunities for improvement in all the areas of knowledge categorized in the research, mainly in relation to the practices related to behavioral patterns, competence management and MB talent management. In the internal audit of MB, the main opportunities for improvement are related to the training needs and follow-up of the practices of risk management, ethics, performance evaluation, management by competences and knowledge management. It was concluded that the good practices adopted by MB are satisfactory, however, there are still opportunities for improvements that can be implemented for excellence in governance and people management.

Abstract:
In Sweden, the digital transformation is fast. Research shows that there are vulnerable groups of elderly who do not use digital tools frequently and do not have access to services they need. This study examines whether access to and use of digital tools affects older people's ability to manage their lives. Mastery is measured based on theories of Self-efficacy, Internal and External Locus of Control and Sense of Coherence. The participants (n=144) in the study were elderly people who responded to an online survey and therefore used digital tools. This was an essential limitation that affected the result. No significant differences in mastery were found based on the use of digital tools or demographic factors among participants. Experience of professionally having worked regularly with computers was a key factor in the significant relational findings with small effects that appeared. Participants who reported this experience indicated higher mastery skills than those who did not report that experience. It argues for that differences in mastery are greater in more diverse groups of elderly. It supports research that suggests that digitization affects the quality of life of the elderly. Participants highlight that not everyone wants or are able to use digital tools and call for education and practical support in the use of digital tools. It supports studies showing that groups of elderly cannot participate in the digitized society and studies that highlights the importance of lifelong learning.

This paper analyzes the discourse on indigenous criminalization in printed newspaper Folha de Boa Vista, from the interpretation of written texts (headlines, call, editorials, Photo Reports, materials and news) and imagery (cartoons) disclosed in its pages from 2000 (context of Bra-zil Celebration of 500) to 2005 (time of intense indigenous struggle for ratification of the Raposa / Serra do Sol). The construction of a scientific debate orbited among theorists as Bakhtin, Foucault, and Pêcheux, Orlandi and reports printed newspaper Folha de Boa Vista, documentary basis for the analysis of speech through the use of linguistic and semiotic ele-ments, sought to criminalize indigenous Roraima. In the six years analyzed, we found that the print media through the journalistic discourse contributed to the process of criminalization of indigenous Roraima. Finally, we identified strategies for building a discourse that criminalizes those same Indians. The analysis takes as a reference the mass of documents that match the selected issues of the newspaper Folha de Boa Vista, where we identified the discursive forms of criminalization of indigenous Roraima, and aims to reveal how it produces the silence of theindigenous in the newspaper pages in reference.

The theme of this thesis is The Identity Processes of the indigenous construction workers in the city of Boa Vista, RR. The work unfolded from the questioning, focusing on the perceived and observed elements regarding to both indigenous peoples and city. We sought to justify this arrangement by the experiences as a teacher and participation in social movements of indigenous peoples. The main objective of the research aimed to understand the issue of indigenous identity in the city from the social interactions. In this process we were able to reflect on ethnic identity and political identity. Its methodological approach is constituted from the qualitative approach followed by ethnographic practice in the light of empirical readings in the resources found in Clifford Geertz and Malinowski, and from this perspective, the field diary was used as a research instrument of greater relevance, which are described after hearing situations and everyday practices observed at the construction sites. Through the concomitant oral reports observations, elements pointed in the ancestries that comprise the cultural universe were found, set mainly by cosmologies, which remain in their experiences in the city. We interviewed nine indigenous workers, among them, helpers mason, masons and master builders, and besides them we searched for information with supporting actors, which contributed with specific information for the investigative development. The readings of the captured images at the work sites and at other spaces allowed us to register various situations, especially during the workday. Then we point the analysis of city space in the lives of indigenous peoples before the exploitation processes of these people in the labor world. The body of the research is divided into four chapters, followed by the synthesis of the historical process of the labor of the indigenous peoples, since the period of colony and empire in the northern Amazon region to the Rio Branco region, known as Roraima nowadays, the encounter between indigenous actors and the state: the processes of identity beyond the walls of the city, perceptions of indigenous peoples in the city: the experiences in Boa Vista, Roraima and Indian construction workers in Boa Vista, Roraima: an ethnographic spatial context, knowledge and beliefs in the labor world. We have considered that the thesis is based on the idea of the identity process of the indigenous construction workers.

Abstract:
My first exposure to Brecht and his theories was as a high school drama student. One of our year twelve assessment tasks was to write and perform our own Brechtian drama using three or more alienation techniques. I wrote a piece about Religion and Fundamentalism, an issue that I felt strongly about at the time. By carefully following my teacher’s instructions and adhering to the assessment criteria I received a VHA. I concluded from this experience that political theatre could be made by following a simple recipe and combining key ingredients. As my knowledge of theatre and my own creative practice developed I came to understand the great complexity of Brechtian theory and the extreme difficulty of creating effective political theatre, that is, theatre that changes the world. Brecht’s theories have been so thoroughly absorbed into contemporary theatre practice that we no longer identify the techniques of Epic Theatre as necessarily political, nor do we acknowledge its radical origins. I have not yet seen a professional production of a Brechtian play but I’ve absorbed on countless occasions the brilliant reinterpretations of Brecht’s theories within the work of contemporary dramatists. My approach to creating political drama is eclectic and irreverent and I’m prepared to beg borrow and steal from the cannon of political theatre and popular media to create a drama that works, a drama that is both entertaining and provocative. Hoods is an adaptation for young audiences of my original play Kingswood Kids (2001). The process of re-purposing Kingwood Kids to Hoods has been a long and complex one. The process has triggered an analysis of my own creative practice and theory, and demanded an in-depth engagement with the theories and practice of key political theatre makers, most notably Brecht and Boal and more contemporary theatre makers such as Churchill, Kane, and Zeal Theatre. The focus of my exegesis is an inquiry into how the dramatist can create a theatre of currency that challenges the dominant culture and provokes critical thinking and political engagement in young audiences. It will particularly examine Brecht’s theory of alienation and argue its continued relevance, exploring how Brechtian techniques can be applied and re-interpreted through an in-depth analysis of my two works for young people, Hoods and Children of the Black Skirt. For the purposes of this short exegesis I have narrowed the inquiry by focusing on four key areas: Transformation, Structure, Pretext, Metatext.

Abstract:
This study aims to increase understanding of how housing supporters describe their everyday work with the users' recovery at two sheltered housing, in Social Psychiatry perform purity of Skärholmens District Administration. Abstract:

Boat people, whether refugees or migrants, are protected by special provisions in custom and law relating to safety and rescue at sea. At the same time, the governments of coastal states have expressed concern about the arrival of boat people and have been robust in depicting and treating them as a threat. The questions addressed in this article are: how and why have boat people been regarded as a threat, and what challenges does this treatment present for the humanitarian regime at sea? The article connects two dimensions of the issue. First it deconstructs the prevailing images and discourse surrounding boat people that contribute to securitizing them as a threat. Securitization is defined as the process by which issues are identified, labelled and reified as threats to a community, often by politicians for electoral gain. Second, the article argues that this securitization challenges the maritime regime, which is infused with humanitarian values based on solidarity among seafarers. Both short and long-term remedies might be considered. The immediate requirement is to ensure not only that asylum seekers at sea continue to be rescued and protected but also that the maritime regime is strengthened to facilitate their arrival at a place of safety. Over the longer term, de-securitizing the issue of asylum seekers and boat people requires action to address perceptions in destination states.

For those people who are not familiar with the history towards the early development of Hong Kong, the common impression of Hong Kong may be a shopping paradise, a financial centre with skyscrapers. In fact, Hong Kong is a place with inadequate land for farming. However, there are brilliant harbors located at superior geographical location. During the early colonial days, most of Hong Kong people lived on boats and relied on fishing for supporting their lives. Moving into a new era, the numbers of practitioners in fishing industry dropped sharply and led to slump. In order to sustain development of the fishing industry, the Hong Kong government puts efforts on helping fishermen and invests more for promoting fishing port culture in recent years. In this design, there are researches on fishermen living in Aberdeen Typhoon Shelters in early days. The design objectives are as follow: (1) To explore Aberdeen Typhoon Shelters and lifestyle of fishermen lived there by the means of literature review and field research for information gathering; (2) To understand more on custom, living environment, food culture and characteristics of the fishing industry by conducting expert interview as an supplementary to the literature review and field research findings in objective one; (3) In order to let the public know more about the historical culture of people living on boats, to let them learn more about Hong Kong in different perspectives and to make records for people living on boats, poster design will be made for presenting lifestyle of those fishermen. All of the information gathered as stated above will be used for design accordingly. The lives of fishermen living on boats at Aberdeen Typhoon Shelters in early days will be grouped into three topics such as lifestyle, work and custom etc. for poster creations.

Bolger, Dawn. "Race politics : Australian government responses to asylum seekers and refugees from White Australia to Tampa." Thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.7/uws:37989.

Full text
Abstract:
Through an examination of Australian Government responses to Irregular Maritime Arrivals from 1901 to 2001, this thesis will provide an assessment of the roles of race and racism in contemporary Australian Government policy regarding the treatment of asylum seekers who arrive in Australia by boat. In particular, it attempts to build on contemporary scholarship regarding Irregular Maritime Arrivals in Australia by focusing on the conjuncture of race, refugees and Australian immigration policy. While it is well known that race and racism have played important roles in Australian immigration history, contemporary Australia is principally portrayed as a diverse, egalitarian and multicultural society. With the official abandonment of the policies of White Australia in 1973, successive Australian governments have endeavoured to foster, both domestically and internationally, an image of a cohesive, egalitarian and multicultural nation. The aim of the thesis is therefore to explore whether (and how) a continuous racial thread is used politically within Australian refugee immigration discourse to maintain a covert race agenda. Centred on the principle that racism is inherently political, this thesis seeks to investigate contemporary xenophobia in order to understand the persistent support for discriminatory and exclusionist political policy. It argues that despite the rhetoric of harmonious multicultural cohesion, Australian immigration policy—specifically in regards to Irregular Maritime Arrivals—is still significantly influenced by racist ideology. While they have conceptually abandoned ideas of a White Australia, contemporary governments have strayed little from historical convictions of ‘race’ difference. In this way, the thesis suggests that successive Australian governments have successfully coalesced an overt multiculturalism with a covert racism that effectively conceals the political nature of race itself. The fundamental argument of the thesis is therefore that in the Australian context, race is often mistakenly viewed in isolated terms or attributed to its White Australia Past. Ideas of race however, are not simply a part of Australian history and rather are structural, thereby continuing to resound in Australia’s contemporary refugee policies. The thesis therefore contends that the arrival of asylum seekers and refugees on leaky boats provided (and continues to provide) a perfect opportunity for successive Australian governments to enact race ideology without appearing racist. In assessing Australia’s outward claim of multiculturalism alongside the continued maintenance of deeply exclusionist political policy, this thesis traces the development of Australian immigration policy—specifically in regards to the treatment of asylum seekers who arrive by boat—to show that ideas of race not only form an integral part of Australian history, but that they continue to resound and manifest in Australia’s contemporary refugee and immigration policies.

Al, Imran Hassan F. "Interception of refugees at sea and international law : a Rohingya perspective." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.7/uws:59860.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the development of international law, the interception of refugee boats, the turning back of boats to sea and the refusal of disembarkation of refugee boats are common practices around the world. Party states to the Refugee Convention, for instance, Australia and the United States, adopt various laws and policies to deter refugee boats from their coasts, which challenges the refugee protection regime at sea. On the other side, the South East Asian countries, that are the focus of this thesis, are non-party states to the Refugee Convention and there is no particular law and policy for the refugees in the region. Thus, the lack of refugee protection mechanism poses further challenges in South East Asia. The international, regional and domestic legal regime has significantly progressed to provide refugee protection, but the question remains open: is the current legal regime adequate to protect the boat refugees, those who arrive by sea? This thesis explores this question and provides a case study by focusing on the Rohingya boat refugees of South East Asia. This thesis examines the current refugee protection framework for seaborne refugees, and focuses in particular on the principle of non-refoulement and the international law of the sea. It examines how the parties of the Refugee Convention are dealing with the boat refugees, and as a comparative research it also investigates how non-party states to the Convention are dealing with the boat refugees. This thesis evaluates the existing legal protection mechanisms and explores the challenges and gaps in the protection regime for refugees who arrive by boats through sea routes, specially to the non-party states of the 1951 Refugee Convention in South East Asia. By analysing the shortcomings of the protection regime and the opportunities for the boat refugees of South East Asia, this thesis concludes that adoption of a regional framework would be a way of protection for the boat refugees.

Chhum, Sothea.

Full text
Abstract:
C’est pourquoi ce mémoire propose d’analyser The Gangster We Are All Looking For (2003), de Lê Thi Diêm Thúy, et Ru (2009), de Kim Thúy.
Research on Vietnamese diasporic literature from a North American perspective has long been neglected by literary critics. In the United States, writings of authors who originated from Vietnam are usually labeled as Asian-American literature, while in Quebec we prefer to use the term « migrant literature ». This is why this master thesis proposes an analysis of The Gangster We Are All Looking For (2003), from Lê Thi Diêm Thúy, and Ru (2009), from Kim Thúy. Aside from featuring a second generation protagonist, both novels question the way family and collective memory shape the relation to self and others. In The Gangster We Are All Looking For, the quest for identity is defined by the persistance of anonymity as well as by the desire to become a “gangster”, a rebellious figure. In Ru, the future is more related to the notion of integration : the narrator’s life trajectory can be described as an ascent towards the American dream. Many literary critics understood exile in terms of culture and hybridity, but few of them took into account its juridico-political aspect. Using Giorgio Agamben’s concept of “bare life” and Edward Said’s ideas in « Nationalism, Human Rights, and Interpretation », we will demonstrate that exile cannot be merely reduced to a compelling journey told from the perspective of privileged citizens (writers, artists, poets, intellectuals), since it also reflects the precarious status of those who are not recognized by the State (the refugees, the stateless, the undocumented workers).

Abstract:
Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) can cause balance and mobility deficits with activity and participation limitations. Repetitive Functional Task Practice (RFTP), currently best practice to promote recovery, is often not delivered at an adequate volume due to limited resources. This case series looked at the feasibility of treating community-dwelling people with ABI, in a group format, thus allowing economical, intense rehabilitation. Four participants attended for four weeks, three days/week, 4.25 hours/day. One-to-one and semi-supervised therapy was delivered with one therapist and one assistant. 89.51 minutes of RFTP and 134.82 minutes of total physical therapeutic activity was delivered per day. Participant satisfaction was good. All participants improved on some clinical measures. Three participants improved single and dual-task balance measures. This project established feasibility, allowed the formation of guiding principles for and supported the value of future research and development of this ABI Boot Camp model.

Abstract:
The world is facing some of the most demanding moments in terms of mental health preservation, being this reality also reflected in the current People Management challenges. As COVID-19 started to spread, the world population was advised to adopt social distancing measures, as well as to perform their working obligations from home. This reality, alongside the already existent stressful organisational environments, lack of work-life balance and organisational resistance to the implementation of People Management best practices, can lead companies to struggle with economic prosperity and general development, strengthened by the reduction of employee’s performance. Therefore, the present study set out to analyse the impact of People Management Practices’ implementation on employees' mental health in the light of Organisational Engagement under a COVID-19 pandemic influence. The present research was built based on both primary and secondary data. The primary data was collected from a sample divided in two different perspectives: 1) Working population living in Portugal; 2) Selected Human Resources Consulting company. As main conclusions, it was possible to verify the foreseen existence of a relationship, in specific dimensions, between the implementation of People Management Best Practices and Organisational Engagement, as well as the impact of COVID-19 in the referred relation. The study’s originality can be guaranteed by the current existing literature gap regarding effective People Management practices under a COVID-19 perspective, which effectively allows the preservation of employees’ mental health and the mitigation of current realities such as burnout.
