Abstract:
A profusion of research has been dedicated to the effects of new media on body image. In an attempt to explain the inflation of eating disorders, several researchers have turned to the cultivation theory, postulating that increased interaction with these medias will lead to internalizations of the messages they disseminate. The over presence of extremely thin models and actresses can create a new reality for media users, who begin to equate thinness with beauty, power, femininity and happiness. While an abundance of research has delved into the impact of this thin ideal through television and magazines, the Internet as a medium is relatively new territory. Untrodden further is the field of social media, and particularly Instagram. The aim of this study was to determine the potential of cultivation theory via Instagram and its users.

Jennings, George Bradley. "Fighters, thinkers and shared cultivation : experiencing transformation through the long-term practice of traditionalist Chinese martial arts." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/116974.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditionalist Chinese martial arts (TCMAs) are popular in Britain, and some advocates have made extensive claims of their body-self transformation through sustained training. Despite extensive physiological research, there are few investigations of these practices regarding their socio-cultural practice. This qualitative sociological study examines long-term British practitioners’ experiences of transformation via Taijiquan (Tai Chi) and Wing Chun by addressing five issues: 1) Rationales behind practice 2) Resulting transformations 3) Explicit/implicit pedagogic strategies 4) Cultural transmission 5) Relations to broader social life. It approaches these questions through an emergent research design incorporating autobiographical vignettes as a practitioner-teacher-researcher, life histories of experienced practitioners and ethnographic fieldwork of two case study schools. Following thematic, metaphorical and narrative analysis, a structurationist theoretical framework illuminates the data by incorporating sensitising concepts from diverse thinkers including Bourdieu, Frank, Giddens and Yuasa. The findings are represented through autobiographical, modified realist, impressionist and confessional writing and structure the thesis as follows: Firstly, my own story demonstrates shifts in transformation from a technique-orientated approach to a more spiritual/holistic perspective, finally emerging as a scholarly position of a thinker-martial artist. Secondly, practitioner case studies further articulate transformations along a flexible continuum of changing body-self-society relations interpreted here as three ideal types: Fighters, martial artists and thinkers. Thirdly, the connecting pedagogical issues are addressed, as well-rounded TCMA systems possess specific partner exercises to develop intercorporeal awareness and embodied sensitivity, which are explicit aspects of each association’s martial habitus and body lineage. Meanwhile, socio-linguistic metaphors articulate these transformations and are also interpreted as transformations in thinking and schemes of perception. Overall, these sensitising concepts and empirical findings offer a social theory of shared cultivation that acknowledges transformation on individual, relational, institutional and art levels. This shared cultivation framework may be useful for future methodological, theoretical and empirical considerations of wider physical culture. Key words: Autobiography, Body-self transformation, Chinese martial arts, cultural transmission, ethnography, life histories, qualitative research, sociology, shared cultivation

Abstract: This research investigates the construction of a quality of consciousness as attention and presence in the actor/performer¿s work. For this, in the first chapter, we deal on the notion of awareness in the theatrical context, as well the necessary notes about the dicothomy mind/body, and then, find the thought of Francisco Varela, Yasuo Yuasa and Philip B. Zarrilli, ways to (re)consider an another possible quality for the consciousness. Guided by the analysis the work of Jerzy Grotowski in the end of his life (the period know as Art as Vehicle), the second chapter focuses on the notions of Verticality, Awareness, Performer and the binomial I-I presented by the polish director. Besides an analysis on this momento of Grotowski¿s research, we present a dialogue with Varela, Yuasa and Zarrilli, in order to favor the Idea of the artist¿s work on himself (on the notion of "self-cultivation"), linking art and life, understanding in this process the construction of an subtle and refined quality of consciousness. In a third moment, we direct the focus of the research for creative processes of the author, relating theoretical discourse and lived experience in order to find their own ways in the construction of this particular quality of consciousness

Streng, Catherine Ann. "Riding the Wave: How the Media Shapes South Korean Concepts of Beauty." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2018. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1157645/.

Abstract:
This thesis features a qualitative analysis of eight Korean media products — both fiction and nonfiction. For many years, South Korea (hereafter also called Korea) has been called the "world's plastic surgery capital" by many publications, such as Business Insider and The New Yorker. Although Business Insider considers the United States the "vainest country in the world," the numbers of cosmetic surgeries, percentage wise, per person in Korea still outnumber those in the United States, with 20 procedures per 1,000 persons. In this thesis, I argue by using the cultivation theory that Korean television, such as K-Dramas, talk shows and films, which celebrate transformations and feature makeovers and thus normalize cosmetic surgery, create a fantastic space for viewers where the viewers are compelled to act on a media-generated desire to undergo cosmetic surgery in the belief that doing so will also transform or better their lives in the same way it does for the characters in these Korean television productions.

This dissertation takes Lu-liao settlement of Yunlin County as the main fieldsite in order to understand the trend of women’s cultivation in the rural Taiwan. Through the perspectives of landscape, Feminist geography, and body studies, it analyzes how women transform their secondary status to the irreplaceable position. In addition, it explores how women manage their family and interpersonal network to establish their independence and self-value. The cultivating knowledge which the Lu-liao woman constructed is twofold: the one is established from their body experience; the other is the changing value system in the rural area. (A) the establishment of body experience: through their own working habits, experiences and corporeality, women create their own cultivating styles, which contribute to the local characteristics of Lu-liao. This research also finds out that, apart from working ability and personal network, women have made themselves irreplaceable in the gender division of cultivation work. (B) the changing value system in the rural area: from Wolf’s concepts of "uterine family" and "women''s community", this research tries to locate the position and value of women in the rural community. In addition to everyday labor, it also attempts to understand their spiritual life. In so doing, we can realize the social life and normative value system which have long dominated women. The research discovers that women have made efforts to understand the value of their existence. They establish their own importance from working in the field. Hopefully, this research can provide an overall situation of women’s cultivation in Lu-liao which urge the authorities to face up to the problems of woman labor in agriculture and bring up suitable solutions.

Isaria cicadae, a medicinal fungus of the family Cordycipitaceae, is a rare and precious traditional Chinese medicine. Pharmacological effect of Isaria cicadae include immunoregulation, improvement of renal function, inhibition of cancer cell growth, anti-oxidation, reduction of blood glucose and lipids, pain alleviation, sedation, and promotion of sleep and many other effects. In this study, solid-state cultivation of grains was performed to identify the incubation conditions required to create Isaria cicadae fruiting bodies. Wheat and barley with a dry weight of 30 g were used as the culture medium and placed inside separate glass bottles (hereafter referred to as the “wheat bottles” and the “barley bottles”). Under a temperature of 25°C, a relative humidity of 90%–100%, and an illumination of 125 lux, the wheat bottles produced an average fruiting body wet weight of 14.49±0.77 g, whereas the barley bottles produced an average fruiting body weight of 15.81±0.91 g. Subsequently, grains were cultivated using the solid-state cultivation method to generate incubation conditions for cultivating Isaria cicadae polypides. The results showed that by using 100 live cicada pupae with an average wet weight of 1.38±0.04 g as infected polypides and adopting the injection and smearing method, 71±8% of the live pupae were infected. The infected pupae each exhibited an average fruiting body wet weight of 0.3±0.07 g. Next, the fruiting body and base of wild Isaria cicadae as well as those of Isaria cicadae cultured using wheat, barley, brown rice, and pupae were obtained. Then, the water extraction method was utilized to extract the target ingredients, adenosine, and cordycepin before high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was employed to measure their quantities. The results showed that wild Isaria cicadae fruiting body contained the highest cordycepin content (1.2±0.16 mg/g), followed by Isaria cicadae cultured using pupae (1.04±0.01 mg/g), brown rice (0.96±0.14 mg/g), wheat (0.80±0.14 mg/g), and barley (0.78±0.03 mg/g). Concerning adenosine content, Isaria cicadae cultured using brown rice displayed the highest adenosine content (1.10±0.17 mg/g), followed by those cultured using wheat (0.93±0.08 mg/g), barley (0.92±0.03 mg/g), pupae (0.82±0.19 mg/g), and wild Isaria cicadae (0.79±0.04 mg/g). Regarding cordycepin content in the base, Isaria cicadae cultured using pupae exhibited the highest cordycepin content (0.59±0.06 mg/g), followed by wild Isaria cicadae (0.56±0.06 mg/g), and Isaria cicadae cultured using wheat (0.19±0.03 mg/g), brown rice (0.18±0.03 mg/g), and barley (0.15±0.02 mg/g). With respect to adenosine content in the base, wild Isaria cicadae had the highest adenosine content (0.47±0.04 mg/g), followed by the Isaria cicadae cultured using pupae (0.46±0.04 mg/g), wheat (0.24±0.05 mg/g), brown rice (0.22±0.03 mg/g), and barley (0.20±0.02 mg/g). Based on the results shown above, this study verified that Isaria cicadae fruiting bodies can be successfully cultivated using either grains or polypides as the culture medium. When the adenosine and cordycepin contents in the fruiting body and base of Isaria cicadae cultured using wheat, barley, brown rice, and pupae were compared with those in the fruiting body and base of wild Isaria cicadae, the following results were derived: the adenosine and cordycepin contents in the fruiting body and base of Isaria cicadae cultured using polytides as the culture medium were markedly similar with those in the fruiting body and base of wild Isaria cicadae; the cordycepin content in the fruiting body of Isaria cicadae cultured artificially was lower than that in the fruiting body of wild Isaria cicadae; and the adenosine content in the fruiting body of Isaria cicadae cultured artificially was higher than that in the fruiting body of wild Isaria cicadae. Concerning the cordycepin and adenosine contents in the base of Isaria cicadae cultured using the solid-state cultivation of grains method, they were both lower than those in the base of wild Isaria cicadae. These results thus indicate future studies can investigate the use of grains as a culture medium to culture Isaria cicadae.

Antrodia cinnamomea is a unique fungus in Taiwan. It only spoils the decaying heartwood of the burdock tree, which is endemic to Taiwan in the old age. In view of the fact that the quantity of wild burdock is rare and expensive, this study established the artificial culture conditions of A. cinnamomea, which can reduce the slashing of wild A. cinnamomea. The eight indicators of A. cinnamomea contain five kinds of ergosteres, A, B, C H, and K; 2 kinds of lanolin dehydrogenated polyporic acid and dehydrogenated porphyric acid, and a single benzene ring. This study also established the quantitative analysis conditions of the eight major components of A. cinnamomea. Compare with other test groups, the contents of total triterpenoid and the eight indicators were higher in the A. Camphorata with bumpy surface when culture solution supplementing with Italian distilled lemon essential oil (concentration at 1,000 ppm) and vitamin B group (1/6 stock solution concentration), three months . Then, the cancer cell lines includinghuman liver cancer, human breast cancer, human colorectal cancer and human lung adenocarcinoma were used to evaluate the activies for inhibiting cancer cell growth-self-made and commercially available A. cinnamomea. At the concentration of 125 ppm, A. Camphorata without bumpy surface, cultured with Italian distilled lemon essential oil (concentration at 1,000 ppm) and vitamin B group (1/6 stock solution concentration) has the highest cancer cell growth inhibiting activity. Then, microcapsules of A. cinnamomea were developed. The microcapsule has moderate hardness and stable yield with 80 mL of sodium alginate and 20 mL of gelatin as packaging material, the microcapsules have a spherical ratio and the sphere is rich in elasticity with 20 mL of A. Camphorata extract and 30 mL of 10% glycerol as the core material. The microcapsules of A. camphorata obtained under the above conditions can against the destruction of gastric acid for 3 hours, but be dissolved and absorbed within 30 minutes of the small intestine. The microcapsules of A. camphorata will be packaged in ampoules for easy storage and easy carrying.

Antrodia camphorata, an unique species in Taiwan growing on the wood of Cinnamomum kanehirai, is a kind of newly-developed health food. The wild type of Antrodia camphorata is on the verge of extinction and is hardly to acquire so the price is scorchingly high as well. Nowadays it has already been listed as protective species. Antrodia camphorata has been developed in the culture through deep fermentation. And the majority of scientists study liquified deep fermentable mycelia of Antrodia camphorata as their research materials. On the contrary solid culture is a newly-developed technique. Antrodia camphorata cultivates by this method approximates to wild-type ones. We can expect it is similar to natural Antrodia camphorata in therapeutic effects. Thus, we used solid-cultured Antrodia camphorata as the research material in this study. For the present the constituent and bioactivity of Antrodia camphorata is still in the analysis. And now researches in polysaccharides and triterpenoids are mainstream of in effective constituent. There have been some medical references pointing out polysaccharides have effected on strengthening human immunity and resisting cancers. This study explored the methanol extracts of Antrodia camphorata effected on anti-mutation and anti-aggregation. This study adopted Ames test, a kind of bioassay, to explore the effects against oxidative mutation. We used Salmonella typhimurium TA102 as the test strain. Besides, we used hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl free radicals and cumene hydroperoxide as mutagens to explore whether triterpenoids extracted by methanol have expectant effects on free radical scavenging. The result of this study is as follows: The suppression ratios of the treatment of Antrodia camphorata methanol extracts at 15 mg/ml and 10 mg/ml were statistically significant with control. Our study found out the IC50 were 10 mg/ml, 14 mg/ml, 6mg/ml separately while we treated hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl free radicals and cumene hydroperoxide as mutagens. In platelet aggregation assay, when the extract concentration of Antrodia camphorata were 7.5 μg/ml, 11.5 μg/ml, 15 μg/ml, they can inhibit agglutination induced by collagen (1μg/ml). The inhibitive percentages were 59.13±3.82%, 64.27±7.84%, 96.22±3.44% separtatately. The effective constituent of Antrodia camphorata can inhibit intracellular Ca2+ mobilization which was induced by collagen, therefore it reduced platelet agglutination and the inhibition curves were rather dose-responsive.

The interrelationship of moral character cultivation and a nation’s administration always stated and reflected Chinese’s traditional political condition. In such relationship, body was the key element. On the one part, body was the necessary foundation for moral character cultivation. Whether the emphasis was put on having great virtue inside or on either depreciating or appreciating human body, it all believed human’s heart, his mental status, and the form and structure constituted important concepts of moral character cultivation. On the other part, it was also because human body was deemed as a kind of political ground; when body and mind was trained, i.e. when moral character was cultivated, one was able to govern the country. In such administrative level, “heart” was a metaphor of the king, which was the leader of a country; “hands and legs” and “ears and eyes” implied the king’s subjects. Therefore, the king and the subject’s relationship were often imaged by the king’s body. Because of such idea, not only the king himself should set good examples with his own conducts and influence and reform the people by his own behavior, but also the king’s body would symbolize and represent the whole nation. The ideas of “body and polity”, “king and the nation were equally correlated”, and “body and the nation should be cultivated and administrated simultaneously”, constructed the frameworks of the theory of “the politics of the body”. Within such pattern of thought, great philosophers in Pre-Chin Dynasty had different arguments. Chapter III discussed among one of the body politics theory: moral characters cultivation and discipline, morality realization, body and mind cultivation before administrating the nation, and then putting efforts in governing the nation and loving his people. This article generalized and named this as the theory of “Wei-Jheng-Yi-De (meaning using morality to govern the nation)”. This was just like the political arguments held by the Confucianism and the Mohists in Pre-Chin Dynasty. Chapter IV analyzed another argument, which paid attention to solitude, inactivity, and the administration of doing nothing that goes against the nature. Later, this argument even evolved into versions of “Sing-Ming (meaning actuality and name)”, “Ren-Shih (meaning power appointment)”, “Jyun-wu-wei, Chen-you-wei (meaning an incapable king is acceptable, but his subjects must be capable of assisting the king)”. These were the body politics theory of “Jyun-yi-Chen-lao (meaning the king can be at ease, but his subjects must be hard-working)”. In this argument, Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu stressed on morality realization and inactivity. Following this thinking, from “inactivity and doing everything possible” to the statement of “king can be incompetent but his subjects must be very capable of assisting the king”, the argument of “Jyun-yi-Chen-lao” finally came into existence from the doctrines of Huang Lao, Chuang Tzu’s later study, and Hanfei of the Legalism. When such argument arose, it became an important political theory that was compatible with the idea of “ Wei-Jheng-Yi-De”. Combined real history and different thoughts, Chapter V elaborated theories on historical matters and used theories to explain such matters. From the angle of combing theories and real history, it viewed the continuous development of the two body politics arguments and illustrated how the politics of the body can be realized in the real world. It also indicated the time meaning of such thinking. How did the two concepts of the politics of the body elaborate in thinking? And how were those carried out as the form of political behavior? This article, standing on the point of history of political thoughts, investigated history and thoughts, theory and reality, political behavior and traditional culture, and tried to understand the complicated relationship among them. Between learning and politics, authority and philosophy, theory of the politics of the body not only revealed Chinese philosopher’s concerns and ideals, but also reflected their regrets and disappointments. Through such study, this article hoped to expound the history, so as to know the worldly wisdom and therefore to make some contribution to the political thinking between Pre-Chin Dynasty and early West Han Dynasty.
