Abstract:
Cochlear implants (CIs) help to restore basic auditory function in patients who are deaf or have profound hearing loss. However, CI patients suffer from limited voice and tonal perception due to spatial separation between the stimulating CI electrode and the receptor spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs). Directed regeneration of proximate SGN axons may improve tonal performance and implant fidelity by decreasing the spatial separation between the CI electrode and the neural receptor. Additionally, fibrous scar tissue formation on the surface of implanted electrodes further decreases tonal perception

This paper presents designs for Multistable Shape-Shifting Surfaces (MSSS) by introducing bistability into the Shape-Shifting Surface (SSS). SSSs are defined as surfaces that retain their effectiveness as a physical barrier while undergoing changes in shape. The addition of bistability to the SSS gives the surface multiple distinct positions in which it remains when shifted to, i.e. by designing bistability into a single SSS link, the SSS unit cell can change into multiple shapes, and stabilize within the resulting shape, while maintaining integrity against various forms of external assaults n

The method presented involves first, a consistent method of capturing and representing the human model so that the model can be used with CAx tools and solid modeling techniques. Second, it provides a design methodology based on feature structure planning and assembly modeling that provides a consistent structure to the design process so that it can be reused and parameterized. Third, a strategy for identifying parametric variables that are referenced to the human body is introduced.

Using catheter-tip micromanometers inserted in the esophagus or the superior vena cava, new techniques to measure high-frequency intrathoracic pressure oscillations were developed.
