Abstract:
This article focuses on the training context of private military and security (PMS) contractors. The training they undergo varies considerably, though the majority of training providers offer instruction in how to work in armed close protection (CP) as so-called bodyguards of dignitaries or on convoy protection. Set against this backdrop, the article reports on two periods of ethnographic field research of armed CP training where the author trained as a bodyguard in the first, and played the role of dignitary in the second. The discussion notes the very particular ways in which security is co-constituted between training instructor, author, and student. Here, a form of embodied reflexivity is used to show how security is translated between actors. Acknowledging that security is mediated through time, space, and the body can help to explain the experiences of host populations whose security has at particular moments been jeopardized by these armed actors.

Abstract:
Cutin is a polymer of oxidized fatty acids and glycerol specific to plants. It forms the structural matrix of the waxy cuticle covering the epidermis of the aerial parts and plays a vital role in plants by preventing desiccation. Biosynthesis of cutin polymer was studied in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Mutant loss-of-function monooxygenase type cytochrome P450 CYP77A4 were isolated. The analysis of transgenic lines expressing the GUS reporter gene under the control of the promoter of CYP77A4 showed that the gene was expressed mainly in floral organs and seeds. The analysis of various organs in the cutin demonstrated that the gene was essential for the synthesis of a C18 trihydroxy polyesters present in seed polyesters (9,10,18-trihydroxyoctadecenoic acid). A method for the separation of the embryo and seed coat allowing to analyze embryo polyesters was developed. The trihydroxy C18 fatty acid was found to be the major cutin embryo monomer. Profile of cutin monomers in mutant embryos showed that CYP77A4 is an epoxygenase in the biosynthetic pathway of C18 cutin monomers. The study of the physiology of the mutants also showed that the trihydroxy- fatty acids of the embryo cuticle play an important role in the germination of the seed under conditions of salt stress. In a second study, mutant loss-of-function and overexpressors for the Arabidopsis gene BODYGUARD encoding a protein of the α / β hydrolase fold superfamily have been characterized. Analysis of polyesters in these lines showed that this protein, whose role in the formation of the cuticle was not understood, plays in fact a role in cutin biosynthesis

Abstract:
Host behavioral manipulation, a widespread strategy among parasitic organisms, has evolved to favor the transmission and/or survival of parasites. Understanding such a strategy is at the heart of applied aspects of parasitology, such as epidemiology and medicine, but is also important for evolutionary and ecological reasons. The aim of this study was to improve our knowledge on a category of manipulation that remains poorly documented: the bodyguard manipulation, initially described on parasitoid insects. Following their larval development, certain parasitic wasps (Braconidae) are able to usurp the behavior of their host and force them to serve as bodyguards to protect parasitoid cocoon against natural enemies. Studying the association between the parasitic wasp Dinocampus coccinellae and one of its host the spotted lady beetle Coleomegilla maculata, this work is structured in five axes: i) Efficiency of the bodyguard protection and associated costs, ii) Energetic constraints for manipulative parasites, iii) Diversity and evolution of bodyguard manipulation, iv) Host survival from parasitism and v) Host nutrition effects on a host–manipulative parasitoid association. Our results provide original findings about the ecology and evolution of the bodyguard manipulation, for instance the energetic costs associated with host manipulation or the role of host nutrition in this type of association. New perspectives are identified in order to stimulate future research in this area

This thesis is an interdisciplinary scholarly attempt to explore how individual traumas and colletive traumas are represented in Hualing Nieh’s Mulberry and Peach and Jade Y. Chen’s Mazu’s Bodyguards. In Chapter One, I juxtapose the two novels with Nieh’s and Chen’s accounts of their lived experiences, in order to investigate how Nieh and Chen transfer their traumatic memories into their literary works, and how the historical and social contexts they were in affected their artistic representation of traumas. As Nieh and Chen represent traumas in the novelistic mode, their deeds correspond to a crucial point held by many trauma studies scholars: since the overwhelming power of trauma leads to its impossibility of being fully perceived and accurately presented by people, in trauma narratives too definite positions of recounting the traumatic experiences should be avoided and recreating the traumatic events is needed. This recreation process corresponds to the basic philosophy of narrative therapy, a branch of postmodern psychotherapy approaches. Narrative therapy suggests that the story told by every client is constructed within certain context; during the treatment, the predominant problematic story should be deconstructed and replaced by “alternative stories.” Due to the fact that in both Mulberry and Peach and Mazu’s Bodyguards the two authors reveal their individual and family traumatic stories embedded in national traumatic events through the female perspective, I consider that there are two aspects in which the two texts constitute their authors’ “alternative stories.” First, by interweaving depictions of their lived experiences with fictional elements in the texts, Nieh and Chen tell the “alternative stories” as substitutes for the traumatic memories that have been haunting them in real life. Moreover, Nieh and Chen provide “alternative stories” to counter the male-dominated discourses in mainstream national narratives. In Chapter Two, I examine how Nieh and Chen, as witnesses to women’s sufferings during national unrest, eschew symbolically re-victimizing those female bearers of historical traumas in their “alternative stories.” Borrowing bell hooks’ theory about the margin as a strategic space of resistance, I consider that Nieh’s and Chen’s portrayals of those traumatized women constitute “the subversive voices from the margins” that can provide counter-perspectives against the predominant discourses.

Abstract At present most attention and discussion on 陳玉慧’s Mazu’s Bodyguards from the academic circle focus on the family’s story extending outward and overlapping the country’s fate (family to nation). In my point of view, this kind of discussion regretfully does not refer to the alienation and depressed relationships between people in modern world. I saw alienation between people in modern society in the whole alienated content. Why do tragic lives keep coping to the next generation and cannot be got rid of? Why must one leave? Why is every single character so lonely? Why cannot the thirst for being loved, identified and cared be satisfied throughout the time? Why cannot be accepted when the characters love other people with all their love? Therefore I focus on how a subject looks upon his/her own and family situations and deconstruct the alienation in Mazu’s Bodyguards from objective psychological points of view. This dissertation starts from the author’s semi-autobiography and discusses alienation between men and women’s love, generations and in-law relationship, followed by the author’s life history, compare the alienated topics in the author’s proses and novel, brings out the alienation and identification between the author and other people, and analyze where the root of 陳玉慧’s alienated homeless feeling and pessimistic life is. And then I analyze the relationship between alienation and subject’s self identity. In my point of view, in order to analyze the alienated situation, we have to start from constructing one’s self subject and search for the answer in one’s inside world. Only after recognizing self’s ‘position’, adjusting the interactive attitude between the subject and the outside environment, establishing closer relationships with other people starting from a health self, one subject can truly escape from the alienated relationships. He/she then can reach his/her own peace and comfort in life. Keywords:陳玉慧, alienation, identification, Mazu’s Bodyguards, attachment relationship

The purpose of this study is to explore the application of the traditional martial arts Bajiquan during the close combat (about 6 feet) of personal protection. To better understand the history and characteristics of Bajiquan, the job nature of personal protection and the significance of close compact as a personal defense technique, an extensive literature research was conducted. Through over 20 in-depth interviews with martial art masters, personal security experts and practitioners, relevant data were analyzed and summarized as follows: 1. the uniqueness of martial art: Bajiquan and the personal protection professions originated from the protection of the last emperor Pu Yi of the Qing Dynasty. Until today, it is still a must-have combat skill for Taiwan’s national security secret service personnel. The action characteristics of Bajiquan include “leaning shoulders and striking with elbows, pounding and moving by pelvic limb”, which wins the martial art a reputation of "striking with the elbow and the mountain is knocked down, stamping one’s feet and the entire continent is shaken up." Personal security personnel use close combat technique to ensure the employer’s safety and security. Bajiquan features its action in a way of “Constantly keeping one’s strength ready while holding the actions until the right moment”, which deals with any situation in a low-profile manner while prepares to launch required action at any moment. Such strategy takes into account the employer’s personal and professional image. 2. The relations between the martial art theory, its moves and techniques, and the application of the concept and the move in actions: the close-combat defense technique for personal protection uses the principle of “shielding with body, escorting to leave under cover” as the main tactics. Different scenarios in various situations are classified into three different natures and degrees of risks: low risk (disturbance), medium risk (nuisance) , and high risk (harmful). To deal with different scenarios, Bajiquan’s boxing theory states: "reserves the strength inner-body invisibly, rendering oneself without reservation, preparing to kill with one single blow", with which to exercise the tactics of "attack by strength of the elbow in close range" to eliminate threats and ensure the safety of the employer. 3. Establishing a training system for Bajiquan close combat personal defense skill which suits the need of personal protection requirements: the traditional training system should be used as the basis, combined with the actual work needs and the principles of business management, to establish a "modular" training system, which include real combat practice and the introduction of the training concept and methodology of sports science, meanwhile to facilitate professional teaching resources for inheritance of experience so as to enhance the overall training effectiveness. The research concludes in in attempt to contribute to the promotion of Chinese traditional martial arts culture, and to provide a reference for the use of Bajiquan as a close combat defense technique for the personal security service industry or the continuous development and advancing of government agencies in the coming future.

Schneider, Gavriel. "An examination of the required operational skills and training standards for a Close Protection Operative in South Africa." Thesis, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/734.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the current operational skills requirements for Close Protection Operatives (CPOs) in South Africa. Operational skills refer to those skills that are vital in order for a CPO to effectively protect a designated person (this person is referred to as the `Principal'). In order to determine any shortcomings in the Close Protection industry, twenty in-depth interviews were conducted with current operational CPOs. A detailed literature review was also done in order to create a solid platform for the research and to assist in the verification of the information. During the research, it was found that the task of providing Close Protection could be divided into various sub-categories. This was necessary in order to gain a rounded perspective of a CPO's roles and duties. CPO's tasks in their entirety had to be unpacked into their smaller sub-components. In fact there were many ways to subdivide the skills requirements and functions of CPOs. It was, however, found that the actual subdivisions were less important than the gaining of a comprehensive understanding of how all the aspects are interrelated and should function synergistically. The need for regulation of the South African Close Protection industry was identified as a major concern among all interview respondents. In order to determine the relevant factors involved in regulation, the way countries such as the United Kingdom (UK), Australia and Israel regulate their industries, was assessed. It was noted that the industry in South Africa is `partially regulated'. This means that there is some sort of registration process for CPOs but no comprehensive monitoring and enforcement of accepted minimum competency standards. Currently in South Africa private sector CPOs are rated on the same scale as security guards and must be registered as a Grade level C with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA). This is not an effective manner to regulate CPOs. CPOs should be viewed as professionals and specialists since their skills far exceed those of a security guard (Grade C). According to South Africa's Skills Development Plan all industries will fall under Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs). Close Protection is grouped under the Police, Private Security, Legal, Correctional Services and Justice Sector Education and Training Authority (POSLEC SETA). There is currently a South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) Unit Standard for Close Protection (Protection of Designated Persons, Units Standard number: 11510). However, the research revealed that while the unit standard correctly outlines the operational skills requirements of CPOs there are no assessment guidelines or clearly defined minimum skills requirements. Before the unit standard can be effectively implemented, agreed industry minimum standards for the relevant skills divisions in Close Protection need to be identified and implemented. But currently there is some confusion regarding which body is responsible for, firstly developing acceptable unit standards; secondly, getting the industry as a whole to agree and accept such standards; thirdly, to see to it that training on those standards is provided; and finally the monitoring of these standards in practice. In this study various training related factors were identified and examined in order to assess whether the way CPOs are trained in South Africa is effective or not. Aspects such as the intensity, focus, duration and content were examined. In general it was found that it is important for the following to be implemented: 1. Effective screening and pre-training evaluation of potential trainees. 2. Training should be job orientated and focus on training CPOs for the functions that they will actually have to perform. 3. Training methodologies should focus on an outcomes based approach and utilise the fundamentals of adult based education. 4. Training should simulate reality including the related stress factors that are placed on operational CPOs such as lack of sleep and high levels of activity interspersed with boring waiting periods. 5. Ongoing training and re-training are vital components to a CPO maintaining operational competency. 6. Close Protection instructors need to have both an operational background and training in instructional methodologies before being considered competent. It is important that in the long term international recognition of South African Close Protection qualifications is achieved. This is essential since many South African CPOs operate internationally. Globalisation and improvements in technology have made it easier for international networking to take place. This has meant that clients are using CPOs in different countries and international comparisons are inevitable. If South African CPOs are to be considered `world class' then internationally recognised minimum standards need to be implemented for the South African Close Protection industry. The research indicated and highlighted various trends that may affect the Close Protection industry. The trends identified that seemed most relevant to the South African Close Protection industry were as follows: * Increased public awareness of international terrorism has resulted form acts such as the 9/11 attacks. This has made people more aware of the need for and benefits of security. Use of well trained CPOs is one of the ways that potential clients are able to minimise their exposure to any potential terrorist attack. * A CPO's ability to communicate and liaise with all relevant parties involved in the Close Protection environment is vital to the success of any operation. Therefore it is vital that these aspects receive the relevant focus during training. * The CPO needs to be well trained in use of unarmed combat and alternative weaponry. He/she can no longer rely on the use of a firearm as the primary force option. * A CPO needs to be able to adapt to many different situations. It is important that a CPO is trained to blend in and use the correct protocol in any given situation. The focus of operations should be on operating in a low profile manner to avoid unnecessary attention. * A CPO needs to be well trained in all aspects of planning and avoidance. The skills needed to proactively identify and avoid threats are vital to modern day operations. The CPO also needs to be quick thinking and adaptable in order to function effectively. * A CPO needs to have a working knowledge of all security related aspects that could enhance the safety of his/her Principal (i.e. multi-skilled). In addition to the above mentioned factors, other recommendations emanating from this study focused on minimum competency standards for the identified subdivisions of close protection. Examples of possible assessment guidelines and criteria were identified covering the following broad classifications: * Prior educational qualifications * Physical abilities * CPO skills * Prior experience in guarding * Firearm skills * Unarmed combat * Protective skills * First aid skills * Security knowledge * Advanced driver training * Protocol and etiquette * Management and business skills * Related skills

Abstract:
Physical education in the professional field of private security occupies a key place in the process of training specialists. The complexity of the functional duties performed makes specialists in the field of physical education and sports constantly look for new means and methods of work, introduce existing innovative technologies and theoretical developments of colleagues. In recent years, Ukraine has been actively integrating into the international community, including in matters of standards of physical education and training in the country's law enforcement agencies. The variability of the use of various means of physical education in the field of bodyguards opens up great opportunities for the instructor to work with personnel. When building a program for military personnel, it is important to take into account all factors, namely: the functional tasks of a soldier, anthropometric indicators, training experience, age, etc. etc. In the field of state security of Ukraine, the physical education of future fighters begins at the stage of training in a specialized higher educational institution, where students receive the necessary knowledge for further work with the personnel of the department, as well as for effective special physical training of military personnel throughout their service. The main tasks of physical education, in this case, are: maintaining health, prolonging professional activity and the harmonious development of all motor qualities and functional systems.
