Abstract:

Testudo lunellensis Almera and Bofill, 1903 from the Middle Pleistocene of Cova de Gràcia (Park Güell, Barcelona, Spain) is a valid species belonging to the clade of the extant Testudo hermanni – a diagnostic feature being the narrowed vertebral scutes. Thanks to still unpublished material, T. lunellensis is diagnosed for the first time and its shell morphology described in detail. This species is uniquely characterized, among others, by tall peripheral bones and by a peculiar shape of the anterior lobe of the plastron, somewhat recalling the species referred to Testudo s.s. (the clade containing the extant species Testudo graeca, Testudo kleinmanni and Testudo marginata). Given that the purported valid species from Lunel-Viel (Middle Pleistocene, France) is still unnamed and undescribed, T. lunellensis from Cova de Gràcia is currently the stratigraphically youngest extinct Testudo species. The co-occurrence in T. lunellensis of characters typical of both T. hermanni and Testudo s.s. further testifies the phenotypic plasticity of tortoises and the mosaic distribution of morphological characters, which hinders a clear-cut assessment of the relationships of extant tortoises when based exclusively on morphology. Further analyses of the phylogeny of Testudo should consider fossil and extant taxa together, as well as both morphological and genetic characters.

Espai Verd, obra del estudio de arquitectura CSPT bajo la dirección de Antonio Cortés Ferrando, es una singular edificación de arquitectura modular en el espacio, situada en el barrio de Benimaclet, Valencia. Data de principios de la década de los 80, y fue realizada mediante el sistema de cooperativa de propietarios. El concepto principal, del que parte el proyecto, es el de materializar viviendas con jardín individual, dispuestas en un edificio plurifamiliar en altura. Consecuentemente, la principal característica de la obra es la integración de la naturaleza como parte intrínseca de la edificación y el necesario desarrollo de un sistema constructivo capaz de albergar la vegetación, donde destaca el empleo de hormigón visto, tanto in situ como prefabricado. El diseño fue influenciado por las tendencias arquitectónicas propias de la época, el brutalismo y las megaestructuras, además de contar con numerosos referentes particulares como obras de Moshe Safdie, Ricardo Bofill y José Antonio Coderch, entre otros. El texto expone algunas de las estrategias y decisiones realizadas en este proyecto que condicionan el aspecto formal del edificio y, a su vez, ponen de manifiesto la estrecha relación entre naturaleza y hormigón para Espai Verd.

Abstract:

After Francisco Franco’s death, the process of democratisation of public institutions was a key factor in the evolution of the architectural profession in Spain. The approval of the creation of neighbourhood associations, the first municipal governments, and the modernisation of Spanish universities are some examples of this. Moreover, feminist and environmental activism from some parts of Spanish society was relevant for socio-political change that affected women in particular. The last decade of Franco’s Regime coincided with the first generation of women that graduated from the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB). From 1964 to 1975, 73 female students graduated as architects—the first one was Margarita Brender Rubira (1919–2000) who validated her degree obtained in Romania in 1962. Some of these women became pioneers in different fields of the architectural profession, such as Roser Amador in architectural design, Alrun Jimeno in building technologies, Anna Bofill in urban design and planning, Rosa Barba in landscape architecture or Pascuala Campos in architectural design, and teaching with gender perspective. This article presents the contributions of these women to the architecture profession in relation to these socio-political advances. It also seeks—through the life stories, personal experiences, and personal visions on professional practice—to highlight those ‘other stories’ that have been left out of the hegemonic historiography of Spanish architecture.

Abstract The article approaches the inspiration of recycling at different levels of understanding. The introduction describes the meanings of the word recycling as it is perceived in relation to architecture. The first chapter approaches recycling through its most common understanding as material reuse, describing how the recycling of materials can inspire architecture. The second chapter takes up recycling in the sense of conversion, pointing out the particular importance of addressing this issue. The chapter mentions four theories dealing with approaches to conversion, which are specified through examples, and points to architectural recycling motivated by idea and by religion. The third chapter discusses architecture is inspired by recycling or reusing architectural elements that become the bearer of the idea of behind a new architectural concept. The fourth chapter reflects on understanding the recycling of architecture as taking on the formal image of historical architectural styles, thus reflected in the historical styles of the 19th century and postmodernism of the 20th century. The fifth chapter “Recycling the idea” seeks recycling at the level of the idea, by incorporating old ideas into modern concepts, referring to the Ideal City of Chaux and to Ricardo Bofill, the motif of the medieval mázhaus and Socrates’ house. In the sixth chapter, entitled “Recycling as a concept”, we read about inspiring architecture that takes on recycling at many levels of meaning, becoming important for objectifying the ideological essence of the work. The conclusion of the paper briefly summarizes the results of the work and its essence, summarizing a subjective evaluation of the issue.

Introduction. As a spatial art, architecture is related to the past, the present and, thanks to its monumentality, is fixed in the foreseeable future. As the history of the study of the categories of space and time in the history of philosophy and science shows us, it is possible to obtain significant results only in the process of their synthetic study. In contemporary studies on the philosophy of architecture we most often encounter close attention to the category of space, which is quite natural. However, the category of temporality is no less important for understanding the architectural heritage.Methodology and sources. The methodological basis of the work is historical, cultural, and semiotic analysis. The main approach is interdisciplinary. The sources used were philosophical texts related to the problem of time (P. P. Gaidenko, V. I. Ukolova, A. Ya. Gurevich, A. N. Loy, K. N. Pavlyuts, V. N. Finogentov), theoretical works on architecture (A. V. Nekrasov, K. Nornberg-Schultz, N. A. Ladovsky, Z. Gidion, A. Rappoport), as well as materials in which architects reveal the essence and specifics of their professional activities (R. Bofill, D. Libeskind).Results and discussion. In philosophy, temporality is understood as a collective concept that includes several components. The results of the study are the following conclusions: for the perception of architectural space, the temporal characteristics of both the object and the subject are important; the concept of historical memory contained in the heritage of architecture must be approached as carefully as possible; in temple architecture, through the stability of spatial solutions, the temporal characteristics of the object are preserved; at transitional moments of time, there is often a change in style and its temporal characteristics.Conclusion. Along with the category of space, the category of time in architecture is essential, and should not be of secondary importance in the analysis, development, renovation or preservation of any buildings. The history of architecture shows us the depth and complexity of the category of temporality at different levels. It turns out to be promising to study this problem in an interdisciplinary approach, since it is no longer enough to research it only from the point of view of objectively real forms of existence of matter. There is a need to consider it from the point of view of philosophical and socio-cultural interpretation.

Abstract:

This study assessed the effect of triweekly interdental brushing for a period of 6 months using the bleeding on full-mouth interdental brushing (BOFIB) index. All participants answered questionnaires and were instructed to clean all interdental areas using an interdental brush at least every second day. A dentist assessed the BOFIB index of 28 participants at baseline and at 3- and 6-month follow-up visits. We stratified the participants into three groups: IB-NN, those who used the interdental brush less than three times per week both before and after this program; IB-NY, those who used the interdental brush less than three times per week before the program but at least three times per week after the program; and IB-YY, those who used it at least three times per week both before and after the program. Owing to the weekly number of interdental brushings, the IB-YY and the other two groups showed a significant difference at baseline. At the 6-month follow-up, the weekly number of interdental brushings led to a significant difference between the IB-NN and the other two groups. The BOFIB index was lower among the compliant participants than among the noncompliant participants after 3 and 6 months of triweekly interdental brushing.

The law requires the company to keep a register which records information about members of the company and their shareholding. In the keeping of the register, errors are bound to occur and sometimes disputes could result from those records. The courts are given broad power under the companies statute to rectify the register, but the exercise of that power is now restricted in Nigeria by section 11 of the Banks and other Financial Institutions Act of 1991 (BOFIA) in relation to banks. Two superior courts in Nigeria in two different cases respectively interpreted section 11 of the BOFIA and pronounced on its relationship with the Companies Act arriving at conflicting decisions which are bound to lead to further confusion and injustice in some cases as the courts continue to abide by the rules of precedents. The paper examines those decisions of the courts in the context of the statutory provisions interpreted and applied in those cases with a view to straightening the legal position as would make those decisions more acceptable and reliable as guides to future developments of the law

Abstract:

ABSTRACT This study was designed to characterize the viability and potential virulence of bofilm-forming Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium under different pH levels, ranging from 5 to 7. The plate count method and real-time reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) were used to evaluate the survival of S. Typhimurium grown in Trypticase soy broth (TSB) adjusted to pH 5, 6, and 7 (TSB-5, TSB-6, and TSB-7, respectively) at 37°C for 10 days. In TSB-5 and TSB-6, the numbers of viable cells estimated by using the real-time RT-PCR were greater than the culturable counts enumerated by the plate count method. Reflectance micro-Fourier transform infrared (micro-FTIR) spectroscopy was used to evaluate the biochemical changes in biofilm cells. Considerable changes in chemical components were observed in the biofilm cells grown in TSB-5 and TSB-6 when compared to the cells grown in TSB-7. The enterotoxin production and invasive ability of planktonic and biofilm S. Typhimurium cells were inferred by the relative levels of expression of stn and invA. The levels of expression of stn and invA were significantly increased in biofilm S. Typhimurium cells grown in TSB-5 (1.9-fold and 3.2-fold) and TSB-6 (2.1-fold and 22.3-fold) after 10 days of incubation. These results suggest that the biofilm-forming S. Typhimurium under different pH levels might change the virulence production and stress response mechanisms.

Abstract:

In small-scale societies children have great access to observing adult roles and this is often reflected in their play, however very few empirical studies of work-themed play have been conducted despite substantial implications that this type of play has for social learning. The current study describes the work-themed play patterns of 1 1/2- to 4-year-old Aka and Bofi foragers and Bofi farmers in Central Africa and examines the extent to which subsistence economy, age, and gender predicted how often children were observed engaging in work-themed play and characteristics of work-themed play. Overall, farmer children engaged in more work-themed play than forager children. Very few gender differences were observed in work-themed play. Age and subsistence economy predicted tendencies for children to be near adults while engaged in work-themed play and to use objects in their work-themed play.

Abstract:

Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to measure transport of the fluoroquinolones (FQs) ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin into Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms. Biofilms were exposed to each FQ at dose levels of 100, 250, and 500 microg/ml for 30 min. A mathematical transport model was used to extract the diffusion coefficient, binding site density, and adsorption and desorption rates for each experiment. Recalcitrance of the biofilms toward each FQ was evaluated by comparison of efficacies with planktonic bacteria. By this criterion, biofilms were found to exhibit more recalcitrance toward levofloxacin than ciprofloxacin under the experimental conditions. These results cannot be explained by the more hindered transport of levofloxacin, implicating the domination of physiological factors.

Abstract:

This paper examined whether mandatory adoption of IFRS is associated with improvement in accounting quality of banks listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE). The study made use of secondary data; data were extracted from financial statements from 2010 – 2013. The data were analyzed using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) from SPSS. The findings of the study revealed that after the adoption of IFRS, the rate at which Nigerian banks engage in income smoothing increased, while earnings management towards small positive earnings reduced, thus reducing the quality of accounting amount disclosed in the financial statements. The findings of this study have effect on the efficiency of the stock market. Therefore, other bodies, such as SEC, BOFIA, among others should put in place measures that will limit the extent to which bank managers uses their discretion and alternatives in accounting standards to manage earnings.

Abstract:In 1913, a Special Commission Court in Sierra Leone saw a series of trials concerning members of the Human Leopard Society, and conflated this society with the regional Poro Society. This article examines one of those trials and unearths motivations for murder and questions of bias. With the reinvention of identity in the shadow of slavery, a nuanced and complicated picture emerges of the situation. Though more questions than answers are offered by the details of the case, this article problematizes Sierra Leone under British authority, and shows a nuanced snapshot of power struggles playing out in a murder trial.

Abstract:

The serrano artisanal cheese is a typical product from South region of Brazil, which is produced by skilled cheesemakers using raw milk. The contamination of this food by Escherichia coli has a great impact on public health, since it could threat the consumers’ health. The study evaluated the presence of virulence genes, antimicrobial susceptibility profiles and bofilm-production ability of Escherichia coli isolates obtained from raw milk and artisanal cheese produced in Southern Brazil. A total of 117 isolates of E. coli were characterized by multiplex PCR to detect the following virulence genes: eae for enteropatogenic E. coli (EPEC), lt and st for enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), stx for shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), stx and eae for enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), ipaH for enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) and aggR for enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC). In addition, antimicrobial susceptibility profile to 22 antimicrobial agents was also performed by disk diffusion method, and we searched for extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) and/or carbapenemase- producing isolates. Isolates that were positive for ESBL and carbapenemase were further investigated for the presence of the genes: blaTEM, blaSHV, blaOXA, blaCTX-M, for ESBL and blaOXA-48 for carbapenemase. Further, isolates had their ability to form biofilms investigated by the red Congo agar method. Virulence genes of E. coli were identified in 21.37% of the tested isolates, which were classified as EPEC (the most prevalent pathotype) and ETEC or EAEC. Ten (8.55%) of the total studied E. coli isolates revealed a multidrug-resistant profile, since they were resistant to three or more antimicrobial classes; whereas four isolates (3.42%) were classified as ESBL-producers and showed the presence of blaTEM gene. None of the isolates exhibited carbapenemase activity nor did they carry carbapenemase genes. From the total of E. coli isolates, 79 (67.52%) were considered potential biofilm producers. These results address a serious public health issue, since artisanal cheeses pose a risk to consumers’ health, since may be sources of dissemination of diarrheogenic E. coli, that can cause from subclinical to severe and fatal infections in children and adults, and also emphasize the need to improve adaptations/adjustments in the manufacturing processes of these products.

Abstract:

This paper explores childhood social learning among Aka and Bofi hunter–gatherers in Central Africa. Existing literature suggests that hunter–gatherer social learning is primarily vertical (parent-to-child) and that teaching is rare. We use behavioural observations, open-ended and semi-structured interviews, and informal and anecdotal observations to examine the modes (e.g. vertical versus horizontal/oblique) and processes (e.g. teaching versus observation and imitation) of cultural transmission. Cultural and demographic contexts of social learning associated with the modes and processes of cultural transmission are described. Hunter–gatherer social learning occurred early, was relatively rapid, primarily vertical under age 5 and oblique and horizontal between the ages of 6 and 12. Pedagogy and other forms of teaching existed as early as 12 months of age, but were relatively infrequent by comparison to other processes of social learning such as observation and imitation.

Abstract:

The postmodern architecture of the last third of the XX century saw a steady tendency of appealing to classical heritage aimed at combining modern technologies and historical associations with classical architecture. The work considers postmodern urban planning concepts of the late XX-the beginning of ХХI centuries. Methods of interpreting the order system in the architecture of postmodernism are analyzed by comparing such theoretical concepts as R. Bofi ll›s industrial classicism, the new urbanism of L. and R. Krier, the theory of the city by Aldo Rossi. Architects postmodernists searching for sense and architectural language began to address to the historical past, using signs and images of classical architecture. Leaders of postmodern movement, trying to return to architecture the «eternal values» lost by modernism, opened a way for new creative searches and transformation of the order system elements. Its representatives were attracted by the «double code» of the order architecture, which allowed to solve complex town-planning problems. Postmodernism declared the idea of «architecture parlante». The notion of «postmodern classicism» disguised the compositional search for dialogue with any classical epoch – antiquity, renaissance, baroque, classicism itself. The order language of these epochs, possessing a tremendous potential of utterance, allowed the architect to create all the new meanings and texts. The article discusses the change of semantic meanings occurring in modern urbanism, the interpretation of order compositions, the notion of «order tradition» and the expansion of the semantics of the order system in historical and cultural context. The article shows that the theory of postmodernism actualized the notion of «order tradition» and expanded the semantics of the order system by its application in modern city planning concepts.

ObjectiveThe purpose of the study was to confirm the hypothesis of possible intestinal viruses circulation in wastewater in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine.IntroductionThe main reservoir of intestinal viruses in the environment is human feces and contaminated wastewater. Sewage contamination preconditions further contamination of surface water serving as a source of water supply [2,7,8]. High resistance to physical and biological exposures ensures long-term survival of the viruses in water with various type and level of contaminants, especially in sewage. Detection of enteroviruses of a specific serotype in sewage indicates a significant number of people releasing the virus with feces [1,2]. There are two peaks of enteroviruses concentration in sewage: in January-April, and in June-September [8]. Sewage testing for enteroviruses is one of effective methods for their detection and risk assessment [3]. European region, including Ukraine, is recognized as free from of wild polioviruses, and a systematic study of sewage samples is important for identifying the possibilities of their "silent" circulation [6].MethodsWastewater samples from large sewerage collectors, sewage wells of infectious departments, city hospitals and district sewerage networks of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast were tested in 2007-2017 (39-64 samples monthly in the points are determined by the national regulations [7]). Gauze tampons (Moore's method) were used to collect wastewater [8]. In addition, samples were collected from wastewater flow into 1-liter sterile bottle with a sampler. Concentration was carried out using Enterosgel (hydroxyl methyl silicic acid) with high adsorption capacity [7]. The supernatant after all the concentration steps was used for culture on cell cultures RD, HEP-2, L20B [4,7,8].In the presence of cytopathic action in RD cells, culture liquid was inoculated into L20B cells to detect clear cytopathic activity. Culture liquids were investigated to identify enteroviruses in neutralization reaction. In HEP-2, cytopathic effects were observed in the form of clusters of different sizes cells, "grape clusters", which indicated the presence of adenoviruses. Adenoviruses were confirmed by immunochromatographic tests for adenovirus antigens "Cito Test Adeno" Pharmasko, Ukraine).ResultsDuring 10 years, 150 viruses were isolated, 2 of them were a mixture of polioviruses. The frequency of detection of enteroviruses (including polioviruses) and adenoviruses was 2.5% (Tab 1).The isolated strains of enteroviruses, including polioviruses, were sent for confirmation the Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and Regional WHO polio reference laboratories (Moscow and Helsinki). All polio strains were attributed to the vaccine strain Sabin. Also, the result Coxsackie viruses B typing was confirmed.ConclusionsThe data testify to presence of Picornaviridae (polioviruses, Coxsackie B, non-polio enteroviruses (NPEVs), and Adenoviridae in the wastewater in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine. The typical composition of viruses was not constant. Types 1, 2 polioviruses (Sabin) were occasionally isolated from wastewater. Type 2 polioviruses (Sabin) were isolated only in 2015. In 2009, 2012-2014, 2017, polioviruses did not stand out. Polioviruses isolation is associated with mass immunization of children against polioviruses carried out to maintain polio-free status of the country. In average, 150,000 children are vaccinated annually. Oral poliomyelitis vaccine (OPV) produced in Russia, France, Belgium was used in 2007-2017 (attenuated Sabin strains, 1,2,3 types). From April 2016, Ukraine refused to use trivalent OPV and switched to bivalent vaccine (Sabin strains, types 1 and 2).Sewage testing for polioviruses and their differentiation at WHO National and Regional Centers for Polio Diagnosis ensures a system for monitoring of possible "silent" circulation [6]. Sewage testing using cell cultures is one of the most affordable, effective and reliable methods for controlling the presence of viruses in the environment [4,7,8]. RD and L20B cell lines are useful for poliovirus isolation from sewage [4].In addition to polioviruses, 1,2,3 types Coxsackie viruses B were isolated from wastewater samples. However, starting from 2013, Coxsackie viruses were isolated only in sporadic cases (Cox.vir.B5). In 2007-2011, NPEVs were isolated in some cases. Because polio is on the verge of eradication, more attention should be paid to study of NPEVs [5]. For 10 years, adenoviruses were isolated, which are well preserved in wastewater [1].
