Abstract:
Peatlands are associated with a range of ecosystem services such as long-term carbon storage and sequestration, biodiversity, and potential water reservoirs, mitigating floods and droughts. However, in the 20th century, large peatland areas in the northern temperate and boreal regions were drained by ditching, primarily to enhance forest and agricultural production and peat harvesting. Drainage of peatland is associated with a reduction in wet tolerant peatland species, reduced long term carbon sequestration and increased carbon emissions, conflicting with the goals of the Convention on Biolog

Abstract:
Large areas of northern peatlands have been drained and afforested in the second half of the 20th century with significant impacts on important ecosystem services, including loss of biodiversity and potential changes in C storage. A considerable effort is currently invested into restoring original peatland function and ecosystem services, with an increasing area of newly restored peatland areas over recent years. However, the effect of restoration on the greenhouse gas (GHG) budget is unknown. This study is the first quantification of CO2, CH4 and N2O fluxes from forest-to-bog restoration site

The establishment and intensive management of forests for the production of timber can have significant effects on the soil carbon dynamics. The establishment of forest on organic soils under grasslands may lead to substantial losses in soil carbon, due to the site preparation for the planting of trees and other disturbances. This is gradually compensated by carbon accumulation in tree biomass as the forest grows until clearfelling at maturity may initiate another substantial carbon loss. This study had two main aims. Therefore it is essential to understand how timber density is impacted by site factors and climate in order to predict the potential effects of climate change on timber quality in Sitka spruce in the future. <p>In 1994 a new Forestry Act was accepted in Sweden. One of the aims of the law is to raise consideration forpreservation of biodiversity. Since the new law got accepted and some time has passed, there now lie someinterest in examining whether the law has been effective towards its purpose. Methods suitable for analysishave been examined during this study. The content of this pilot study is based around five parameters whichcan be used to validate the effects of the new law. The field study were executed in Orsa, Dalarna, Sweden ina managed forest where last clearcut was performed after 1994.

Abstract:
The goal of this work is to expand the knowledge on the field of Venn Prediction employed with Survival Data. Standard Venn Predictors have been used with Random Forests and binary classification tasks. However, they have not been utilised to predict events with Survival Data nor in combination with Random Survival Forests. With the help of a Data Transformation, the survival task is transformed into several binary classification tasks. One key aspect of Venn Prediction are the categories. The standard number of categories is two, one for each class to predict. In this work, the usage of ten c

Clinical trials are experiments or observations on a patient’s responses of different medical treatments to cure diseases. Such trials are heavily regulated and must achieve a certain quality standard of the trial and clinical adherence is a determining factor on the success of a study. However, it has historically been difficult to systematically follow and understand patient adherence to medical ordinations, predominately due to lack of proper tools. One new type of tools is a digital pillbox that can be used to supply pills to participants in clinical trials. This paper examines implementin
