Abstract:
Liliana Cavani’s 1974 film The Night Porter begins when Lucia (Charlotte Rampling), a death camp survivor, and Max (Dirk Bogarde), a former SS officer, begin to replay the sadomasochistic sexual relationship they had during Lucia’s internment. The past/present timelines that emerge are not separate, but interconnected and intermeshed. This article examines the film as a “memory text,” as defined by Annette Kuhn, to explore the way memory impacts Cavani’s ethical pursuits, which is directed by Kelli Fuery’s Beauvoirian analysis of moral ambiguity in the film. Sophia Bain argues film does not endorse the relationship, but rather presents the reality of women’s submission as an embodied memory of women’s past submission.

Abstract This essay explores the plans of 1982–1983 to produce a remake of and then a kind of sequel to Beckett’s 1965 Film. With access to the personal archive of the director who was planning these pieces, Damian Pettigrew, the essay traces the history of the shifting project and focuses on Beckett’s own direct involvement, evidenced in correspondence as well as notes taken of a number of face-to-face conversations between Pettigrew and Beckett. These conversations also throw light back on 1965’s Film with regard to influential films, locations and imagery that provide context to the original. At the same time, further correspondence reveals the involvement or near involvement in the Film remake of notable figures such as Jack Lemmon, Dirk Bogarde and Klaus Kinski.

Abstract:
This article considers the working practices of British cinema's only major female film producer during the early-to-mid post-Second World War era, Betty E. Box (1915–99). Via reference to her extensive archive at the British Film Institute and the films Campbell's Kingdom (1957), The Wind Cannot Read (1958) and Hot Enough for June (1964), the article charts how Box initially envisaged multi-generational casting for roles that were eventually taken by long-term collaborator Dirk Bogarde. It considers the manner in which she approached the diplomatic complexities of location shooting, with particular focus on Ralph Thomas's military romance The Wind Cannot Read, the first British film to be shot in India for twenty years at the time of its production. The reasoning for Box's ongoing absence, as a female creative figure, from scholarship addressing British cinema, and film production more generally, will also be addressed.

Abstract Travis Bogard's reliance on final authorial intention as the principal criterion in his selection of copy-texts for the Library of America edition of O'Neill's plays sometimes disadvantages scholars interested in, for example, performance and reception. For work on thirteen plays in particular, scholars will do well adjunctively to consider states other than those on which Bogard based his texts.

Abstract:
The effect of fructose on γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) content and its metabolic pathway in broccoli sprouts was investigated. The results demonstrated that the fructose treatment not only significantly increased the fresh weight, GABA, and glutamate contents in sprouts, but also promoted the activity of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) and the expressions of BoGAD1 and BoGAD2. Meanwhile, fructose treatment inhibited the stem length of broccoli sprouts and enhanced the abscisic acid (ABA) production in comparison with the control. Ca2+, CaM contents, and BoCaM2 expression in broccoli sprouts were also stimulated after fructose treatment. Exogenous fructose increased inositol trisphosphate (IP3) content and activated the activity of phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) and the expression of BoPLC2, contributing to Ca2+ influx into the cells. These results suggested that Ca2+ played an essential role in GABA enrichment under fructose treatment, which may be associated with GAD and PI-PLC.

Greenfield, Stacey Amanda Lorraine. "Formal techniques and self/other relations in the novels of Dirk Bogarde." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2006. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/3149/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis foregrounds the distinctive contribution Dirk Bogarde made to contemporary writing in a second career that developed in parallel to his screen commitments. It dispels the notion that Bogarde followed a familiar path as an actor who wrote books. Instead it establishes his reputation as an innovative writer whose formal technique was substantially influenced by the textual systems of cinema and the cross-fertilisation from acting to writing. In examining the formative factors that steered Bogarde towards authorship, the thesis addresses the role of performance as a generative factor in the evolution of the novels, establishing a discursive link with Bakhtinian dialogism, and specifically, transgredience as a formal imperative. Secondly, it affords a critical insight into why the major concerns with staging and performativity preoccupy his writing career. The thesis claims that Bogarde was an empirically dialogical writer whose use of camera-eye narration fostered the proliferation of competing discourses across the fiction. This formal dynamic is centred on the relationship between stages and dialogism, which incorporates the work of Erving Goffinan as a complementary critique to Bakhtinian theory with its emphasis on self-presentation. The concern with socially-constructed behaviour leads the thesis to address the associated issues of stereotyping and 'otherness', which in terms of body politics is articulated by the mono logic drive to confine the sexual 'other' to a fixed representation. Bogarde's ability to draw on cinematic and performance techniques identifies an area of expertise unavailable to most other writers. This is an unusual repository of skills to bring to writing which is why the thesis makes the claim for his singular achievement as a contemporary author. There are fruitful points of intersection to be explored in this respect with the work of Christopher Isherwood, whom Bogarde read and admired, as a basis for further research. It is hoped that the thesis will play its part in opening up new possibilities for Bogarde's writing to be re-visited by future critics.

Abstract: The following pages consist in a historical ethnography of the Hollywood eye. In particular, it describes the sedimentation of the screen persona of Humphrey Bogart (1899- 1957) in the first half of the 1940s. The analytical focus is twofold: on the one hand, pays attention to the gender relations inscribed in his performances; on the other, seeks to relate his social trajectory and Hollywood's industrial structure of production. A discontinuity goes between an artist's interpretation in front of the camera and his/her correspondent projected image on the screen: the work of numerous other professionals (screenwriter, sound technician, editor etc.) completes the process until the film release, when it is evaluated by public and critic. In cinema, the artistic performance is submited to the camera, that executes the mediation of the entire process; to the technical apparatus corresponds the screen persona, that does not resume itself to the interpreter nor his/her characters: at the same time that unites these - outlining a model of gender - it also supplies to the former the social setting in the structure of production. The Bogart case offers a circumscribed picture because his persona emerged in a linear form in half a decade (after years of investment), when Hollywood organized itself through a mode of production called studio system, where each studio developed its own style and controlled the entire industrial production of a film, from screenplay to exhibition - and therefore the relative autonomy of the artist was very narrow. Through a series of clues collected from various sources (films, literature, biographies, historiography), this dissertation argues that social experience and visual culture are inseparable, defends that Bogart's persona (a canonical symbol of masculinity) was nourished by the dramatic tension between the apparent indifference and the sudden vulnerability, and finally demonstrates that the relation between Bogart and his persona was characterized by otherness

Abstract:

In the current research we investigate aspects related to the art of directing, emphasizing the artistic experience of Anne Bogart in the SITI Company - theater company founded in the United States in 1992. One of the characteristics of Bogart's work developed in SITI Company is about training: a current practice in many different artistic approaches in the theatre history concerning to continuous improvement of the actor's (and the actress's) techniques. Here the training is regarded as a concept which was established throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries under prerogatives conceived by theatre directors. In the SITI Company, the training is a combination of the Suzuki Method and the Viewpoints, two different theatrical techniques that overlap cultural references of East and West. We went under reflections on the procedures adopted by Bogart in the SITI Company, in order to specify a particular understanding of the links between the concept of training and the art of directing. And how it becames a proposition for Bogart relative to a director's role.

Bogaards, Hendrik. "Development of a basic design tool for multi-effect distillation plant evaporators / H. Bogaards." Thesis, North-West University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/3997.

Full text
Abstract:
A need was identified for a set of basic design tools for Multi-Effect Distillation (MED) plant evaporators. This led to an investigation into the different types of evaporators as well as further research on horizontal falling film evaporators as used in the MED process. It also included the theory on these types of evaporators. In order not to duplicate existing design tools, an investigation was also performed on some of the tools that are currently available. The first set of tools that were developed were tools, programmed in EES (Engineering Equation Solver), for the vacuum system and the evaporator. These programs can be used to simulate different parameters (like different mass flows and temperatures). That enables the correct selection of components for the vacuum system and can be used to address sizing issues around the evaporator. It can also be used to plan the layout of the plant. The second of the design tools was developed by designing and building a flow pattern test section. From the flow pattern test section a set of curves for the wetted length under different conditions was obtained which can be used in order to design the sieve tray. This set of curves was found to be accurate for municipal as well as seawater and can be used in the design of the sieve tray of the evaporator. Further development can be done by implementing the figures of the wetted length into a simulation package like, for example, Flownex (a system CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code that enables users to perform detail design, analysis and optimization of a wide range of thermal-fluid systems). The background gained from the study done on the evaporator can also be implemented into such a package. This could solve the problem of different design packages by creating a single design package with all of the above mentioned options included.

The chapter covers the 1950s. From 1952-55, Milestone lived and worked abroad (based in Paris) to escape the hostile Blacklist atmosphere. In England he shot Melba, a feature about Australian opera singer Nellie Melba, played by American Patrice Munsel. In Cyprus he directed They Who Dare, a feature about a British raid on Nazi airfields in the Mediterranean, starring Dirk Bogarde and Akim Tamiroff. In Italy he shot La Vedova X (The Widow), a minor film about a romantic-sexual triangle. In 1958 Gregory Peck engaged Milestone to direct Pork Chop Hill, depicting a futile operation by American soldiers during the last days of the Korean War, starring Peck as a conflicted commander.

Abstract:
This chapter explores Beauvoir’s notion of ambiguity through two essays, Pyrrhus and Cineas (1944) and “Must We Burn Sade?” (1955), which, when placed together, illustrate the early and later inflections of her thinking. Two features of Beauvoir’s notion of ambiguity - our interdependence on others and reciprocal recognition – are explored through the interplay of privilege and violence as it occurs within the erotic experience screened in Liliana Cavani’s The Night Porter (1974). These two concepts are treated as embodied phenomenological and political experiences, through the ambiguous, sadomasochistic relationship of Max (Dirk Bogarde) and Lucia (Charlotte Rampling). This chapter argues Cavani’s use of violence illuminates the destruction and oppression those in positions of power and privilege enjoy and are oblivious to; further, it reads The Night Porter as making an appeal, a demand for action.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Članek ponuja vpoglede v vsakoletne zbornike, ki preko člankov omogočajo dokaj verodostojno rekonstrukcijo prevladujočih pristopov, orodij, mnenj in trendov skozi čas.

Abstract:
In the course of the years several turbulence models specifically developed to improve the predicting capabilities of conventional two-equations RANS models have been proposed. However they have been mainly tested against experiments only comparing with standard isotropic models, in single hole configuration and for very low blowing ratio. A systematic benchmark of the various non-conventional models exploring a wider range of application is hence missing. This paper performs a comparison of 3 recently proposed models over three different test cases of increasing computational complexity. The chosen test matrix covers a wide range of blowing ratios (0.5–3.0)including both single row and multi-row cases for which experimental data of reference are available. In particular the well known test by Sinha and Bogard [1] at BR = 0.5 is used in conjuction with two in-house carried out experiments: a single row film-cooling test at BR = 1.5 and a 15 rows test plate designed to study the interaction between slot and effusion cooling at BR = 3.0. The first two considered models are based on a tensorial definition of the eddy viscosity in which the stream-span position is augmented to overcome the main drawback connected with standard isotropic turbulence models that is the lower lateral spreading of the jet downwards the injection. An anisotropic factor to multiply the off-diagonal position is indeed calculated from an algebraic expression of the turbulent Reynolds number developed by Bergeles [2] from DNS statistics over a flat plate. This correction could be potentially implemented in the framework of any eddy viscosity model. It was chosen to compare the predictions of such modification applied to two among the most common two-equation turbulence models for film-cooling tests, namely the Two-Layer (TL) model and the k–ω Shear Stress Transport (SST), firstly proposed and tested in the past respectively by Azzi and Lakeal [3] and Cottin at al. [4]. The third model, proposed by Holloway et al. [5], involves the unsteady solution of the flow and thermal field to include the short-time response of the stress tensor to rapid strain rates. This model takes advantage of the solution of an additional transport equation for the local effective total stress to trace the strain rate history. The results are presented in terms of adiabatic effectiveness distribution over the plate as well as spanwise averaged profiles.
