Greenfield, Stacey Amanda Lorraine. "Formal techniques and self/other relations in the novels of Dirk Bogarde." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2006. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/3149/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis foregrounds the distinctive contribution Dirk Bogarde made to contemporary writing in a second career that developed in parallel to his screen commitments. It dispels the notion that Bogarde followed a familiar path as an actor who wrote books. Instead it establishes his reputation as an innovative writer whose formal technique was substantially influenced by the textual systems of cinema and the cross-fertilisation from acting to writing. In examining the formative factors that steered Bogarde towards authorship, the thesis addresses the role of performance as a generative factor in the evolution of the novels, establishing a discursive link with Bakhtinian dialogism, and specifically, transgredience as a formal imperative. Secondly, it affords a critical insight into why the major concerns with staging and performativity preoccupy his writing career. The thesis claims that Bogarde was an empirically dialogical writer whose use of camera-eye narration fostered the proliferation of competing discourses across the fiction. This formal dynamic is centred on the relationship between stages and dialogism, which incorporates the work of Erving Goffinan as a complementary critique to Bakhtinian theory with its emphasis on self-presentation. The concern with socially-constructed behaviour leads the thesis to address the associated issues of stereotyping and 'otherness', which in terms of body politics is articulated by the mono logic drive to confine the sexual 'other' to a fixed representation. Bogarde's ability to draw on cinematic and performance techniques identifies an area of expertise unavailable to most other writers. This is an unusual repository of skills to bring to writing which is why the thesis makes the claim for his singular achievement as a contemporary author. There are fruitful points of intersection to be explored in this respect with the work of Christopher Isherwood, whom Bogarde read and admired, as a basis for further research. It is hoped that the thesis will play its part in opening up new possibilities for Bogarde's writing to be re-visited by future critics.

Abstract: The following pages consist in a historical ethnography of the Hollywood eye. In particular, it describes the sedimentation of the screen persona of Humphrey Bogart (1899- 1957) in the first half of the 1940s. The analytical focus is twofold: on the one hand, pays attention to the gender relations inscribed in his performances; on the other, seeks to relate his social trajectory and Hollywood's industrial structure of production. A discontinuity goes between an artist's interpretation in front of the camera and his/her correspondent projected image on the screen: the work of numerous other professionals (screenwriter, sound technician, editor etc.) completes the process until the film release, when it is evaluated by public and critic. In cinema, the artistic performance is submited to the camera, that executes the mediation of the entire process; to the technical apparatus corresponds the screen persona, that does not resume itself to the interpreter nor his/her characters: at the same time that unites these - outlining a model of gender - it also supplies to the former the social setting in the structure of production. The Bogart case offers a circumscribed picture because his persona emerged in a linear form in half a decade (after years of investment), when Hollywood organized itself through a mode of production called studio system, where each studio developed its own style and controlled the entire industrial production of a film, from screenplay to exhibition - and therefore the relative autonomy of the artist was very narrow. Through a series of clues collected from various sources (films, literature, biographies, historiography), this dissertation argues that social experience and visual culture are inseparable, defends that Bogart's persona (a canonical symbol of masculinity) was nourished by the dramatic tension between the apparent indifference and the sudden vulnerability, and finally demonstrates that the relation between Bogart and his persona was characterized by otherness

Abstract:

One of the characteristics of Bogart's work developed in SITI Company is about training: a current practice in many different artistic approaches in the theatre history concerning to continuous improvement of the actor's (and the actress's) techniques. Here the training is regarded as a concept which was established throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries under prerogatives conceived by theatre directors. In the SITI Company, the training is a combination of the Suzuki Method and the Viewpoints, two different theatrical techniques that overlap cultural references of East and West. We went under reflections on the procedures adopted by Bogart in the SITI Company, in order to specify a particular understanding of the links between the concept of training and the art of directing. And how it becames a proposition for Bogart relative to a director's role.

Bogaards, Hendrik. "Development of a basic design tool for multi-effect distillation plant evaporators / H. Bogaards." Thesis, North-West University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/3997.

Full text
Abstract:
A need was identified for a set of basic design tools for Multi-Effect Distillation (MED) plant evaporators. This led to an investigation into the different types of evaporators as well as further research on horizontal falling film evaporators as used in the MED process. It also included the theory on these types of evaporators. In order not to duplicate existing design tools, an investigation was also performed on some of the tools that are currently available. The first set of tools that were developed were tools, programmed in EES (Engineering Equation Solver), for the vacuum system and the evaporator. These programs can be used to simulate different parameters (like different mass flows and temperatures). That enables the correct selection of components for the vacuum system and can be used to address sizing issues around the evaporator. It can also be used to plan the layout of the plant. The second of the design tools was developed by designing and building a flow pattern test section. From the flow pattern test section a set of curves for the wetted length under different conditions was obtained which can be used in order to design the sieve tray. This set of curves was found to be accurate for municipal as well as seawater and can be used in the design of the sieve tray of the evaporator. Further development can be done by implementing the figures of the wetted length into a simulation package like, for example, Flownex (a system CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code that enables users to perform detail design, analysis and optimization of a wide range of thermal-fluid systems). The background gained from the study done on the evaporator can also be implemented into such a package. This could solve the problem of different design packages by creating a single design package with all of the above mentioned options included.

Abstract:
Inspired by the innovative experiments between artistic languages occurring in the 1960s, the choreographer Mary Overlie created an improvisation technique, Six Viewpoints. Years later, this technique was developed and systematized by Anne Bogart, director of SITI Company. The emphasis of this technique is in the simultaneous use, by the actor, of the categories of time and space as creative partners. From the historical background, this study analyzes the influence of the pioneers of postmodernism, especially the exponents artists from Judson Dance Theater and the minimalist artists. The study also compares the different approaches by these artists who developed the technique in a critical and comprehensive analysis of the fundamentals that drive each component and its methodologies. Besides investigating its source context, its development throughout the eighties, the study investigates the exploitation of the technique and its relationship with the post-dramatic scene as part of the scenic writings. As a case study, it analyzes the creating process of the play \"Otro\", by the Collective Improvisation, a group that was born from Viewpoints technical training, initially coordinated by Enrique Diaz and Marina Lima after their stay in the Summer Course of the SITI Company in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Abstract:
The never ending argument among linguists and teachers about whether reading difficulties of the non native speakers of English are a reading problem or a language problem is an interesting study to start with. This was one of the questions examined in the study leading to the development of an ESP syllabus for undergraduate students at Bogor Agricultural University (IPB). Chapter One outlines the current English course at IPB where the focus of language teaching is on teaching grammar and reading. Chapter Two looks at the theoretical background and the development of ESP as well as the role of the ESP teachers which is different from the role of General English teachers. Since reading is the only target skill students need to acquire, Chapter Three looks at the theory of reading, outlines necessary reading skills and examines a 'good1 reading teacher. Chapter Four consists of a study and its analysis into whether difficulties in reading is a reading problem or a language problem. These findings are expected to give a clearer idea to the teachers of reading about the problems encountered by the students in reading English texts so they can decide whether the focus of the course should be on grammar development or reading development. Chapter Five discusses several types of syllabus as well as relating to the importance of needs analysis in designing a course, and suggests an outline syllabus for the IPB students i.e. the proportional syllabus including the profile of communication needs, aims and objectives of the course, language content, and the syllabus content.

Abstract:
This dissertation, submitted in article format, explores how the physical movement theories of Anne Bogart's Viewpoints may lead to a liberatory setting, one which echoes the theories of Paolo Freire, for college theatre students. It examines whether Viewpoints is effective in creating a studio classroom culture and whether the Viewpoints exercises can lead to a heightened clarity in individual performance, with a much more satisfying and involved learning experience for students of the theatrical arts. In addition, this dissertation applies the theory of Mead's symbolic interactionism to the discoveries that students make while using Viewpoints exercises. Research methods include autoethnography, analysis of case studies, and examination of interview data from three college directors and thirteen student actors who have trained and used Viewpoints in rehearsal.

Abstract:

Gen. John Adams Dix, the Union commander of the Department of Maryland, wrote in an 1861 letter to Francis Blair of President Lincoln's administration that "we are in the most danger on the Eastern Shore [of Virginia]." Dix did not exaggerate when he implied that Accomac and Northampton County embodied secessionist sentiment on the Delmarva Peninsula in 1861. Dix knew that the Eastern Shore of Virginia, the most southern region of Delmarva, heavily influenced its neighbors to the north. If it made a strong demonstration in favor of the Confederacy, the Eastern Shore of Maryland might go spiraling toward secession. It could also decrease Union sentiment and progress in lower Delaware. With this in mind, Dix decided to make a preemptive strike on the Eastern Shore of Virginia in late 1861. Although this campaign describes only part of the question that this thesis entails it embodies the overarching importance of what occurred in the area.1

This research explores the application of Viewpoints and Composition training with a cast of high school students to measure changes in the social cognitive development (SCD) of individuals and the collective group. The research centers on the writing of Michael F. Mascolo and Deborah Margolis, which takes a coactive approach to the relationship between one's social cognitive development and how it is manifested in his or her actions within a social group. Using this framework, the researcher assesses the personality types within the cast and analyzes how utilizing Viewpoints training creates shifts within these personalities. The researcher approaches this study from both a theoretical standpoint as a student during a two-week intensive training course for adults with SITI Company, and a practical standpoint in the direction of a fully mounted production with high school actors. The objective of the research is to propose a method to implement advanced Viewpoints training within a high school ensemble in order to cultivate ensemble and ultimately aid the social cognitive development of the individual actors.

Abstract:
Analysen utgår ifrån Thin Man-filmerna The Thin Man (1934), After the Thin Man (1936) och Another Thin Man (1939) och noir filmerna The Maltese Falcon (1941), Laura (1944), The Big Sleep (1946) och Dark Passage (1947).

Sebate, Phaladi Moses. "The Tswana short story : from B.D. Magoleng to O.K. Bogatse." Thesis, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/3327.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter One of this thesis investigates the growth and development of the Tswana short story. It commences with an evaluation of studies done on this genre and proceeds to a brief exposition of the Tswana short stories published prior to 1995. It also provides theoretical backgmund on the modern short story. The main focus of Chapter Two concerns the major themes explored in Tswana short stories. These include tradition and culture, love and marriage, the makgoweng motif, religion as well as corruption and other social problems. This thesis has discovered that the Tswana Miters not only criticise the negative aspects of these realities, but also recognise their significance and beauty. Chapter Three examines the organisational patte~ of the Tswana short story and tests it against the structural pattenl of the West. It is revealed that the Tswana short story, like short stories of other cultures, shows a continuous sequence of exposition, development and resolution. However, it occasionaHy deviates from the nonn and commences with philosophical commentaries and details irrelevant to the developmental phase. In structuring their stories, the Tswana writers also use flashback and foreshadowing to link their events. However, what has been discovered is that foreshadowing occurs less frequently than flashback in the Tswana short story. Chapter Four focusses on the word, the sentence and the paragraph and refers to other related clements such as repetition, rhetorical questions, proverbs, idioms and Biblical allusions. These elements serve to enhance the style of the Tswana short story and bring the readers into a dialogic relationship with their language and culture. Creative writing in Tswana illustrates a strong, dynamic relationship with oral tradition. Chapter Five shows how writers have cirawn from the wealth of their traditional and cultural heritage original and wlique devices to improve their works of art. The threads of oral tradition that reveal themselves in the Tswana short story pertain to the organisation of material, characterisation, setting, style and language as well as narrative perspective. In Chapter Six the findings of the earlier chapters are highlighted and recommendations for future research are outlined.

Moloko-Phiri, Seepaneng Salaminah. "Exploring the meaning and interpretations of the proverb "lebitla la mosadi ke bogadi" and its implications on indigenous African women's health : a phenomenological study." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/50707.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: The proverb “lebitla la mosadi ke bogadi” (‘a woman’s grave is at the place/home of her husband’) is used as a language tool during premarital counselling to instruct African women on the value of marriage and to encourage married women to stay in their marriages. However, some African proverbs which are commonly used to define the marital relationship between men and women appear to be gender-biased and focus more on women only therefore perpetuating ill-health, discrimination and oppression. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to explore and describe the meaning and interpretations of the proverb “lebitla la mosadi ke bogadi”, the implications of the proverb as experienced by the indigenous African women on their health, and to describe the study’s theoretical framework and the analogy of the proverb based on the study findings. Methods: Hermeneutic phenomenological methods and a qualitative research design and methods were used to achieve the study objectives. Gadamer’s hermeneutic circle was also used to understand and interpret the meaning of the proverb. The study population consisted of indigenous African women who were selected using snowball and purposive sampling methods. A total number of 57 married, divorced, widowed and, on their request, single women who were attending social clubs/networks in the City of Tshwane and Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa were included in the study. Data were collected by means of five individual and eight focus group interviews and field notes were taken. Colaizzi’s data analysis method was used. Findings: Four themes namely, patriarchy, aspects of trapped women, stress and awareness and nine sub-themes emerged and these were supported by literature. A framework based on Wittmann-Price theory of emancipated decision-making and Masenya’s (bosadi) womanhood approach was developed. The hut and the sun were used analogically to understand the meaning and interpretations of the proverb. Conclusion: The study concluded some women asserted the proverb “lebitla la mosadi ke bogadi” brought positive reinforcement and sanctity to their marriages. While other women asserted the proverb had negative implications on their health. Recommendations for the nurses, education and for indigenous African women have been clearly described.

Mothoagae, Itumeleng Daniel. "New Testament as normative : the morality of cohabitation with specific reference to 1 Corinthians 7." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/13839.

Full text
Abstract:
‘Cohabitation’ has become another form of ‘marriage’. It appears to be challenging what is regarded by many as a traditional marriage practice. As a trend cohabitation has found resistance from those who cling to traditional marriage practices such as Christian marriage and African marriage. It has raised moral concerns, especially among the churches. The New Testament has been used to address moral issues, and consequently, there is a tendency to regard the New Testament as an authority on such issues. The first letter of Paul to the Corinthians, chapter seven, one text among many, in both the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament, has been used authoritatively to address issues surrounding marriage, divorce, marriage annulments, celibacy and sexual conduct. Richard Hays sees the New Testament as being ‘normative’ in dealing with such ethical issues. In this dissertation I argue that when dealing with issues of ethics the New Testament is insufficient to address contemporary moral issues. On its own the New Testament cannot be taken as normative as other sources offer influential views that must be taken into account including the role of conscience as well as how Paul links a theology of the body with his moral theology.

Cieplak-Rotowska, Maja. "Biophysical and molecular biology studies of proteins involved in gene silencing." Doctoral thesis, 2017. https://depotuw.ceon.pl/handle/item/2368.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides biophysical bases of the interactions between two proteins involved in microRNA (miRNA)-mediated silencing: CNOT1 and the silencing domain of GW182. The regulation of gene expression at the post-transcriptional level involves the crucial CCR4-NOT deadenylase complex, which deadenylates mRNA, and can also inhibit translation in an independent fashion. In miRNA-mediated silencing, the CCR4-NOT complex is brought into the vicinity of the target mRNA by the successive actions of the miRNA, the Argonaute protein and finally, the GW182 protein, which interacts directly with CCR4-NOT. In the case of silencing of mRNAs containing AU-rich elements, the same action is performed by the protein called tristetraprolin involved in the regulation of inflammatory processes. The interactions and interplay between all of these high molecular weight proteins are relatively poorly understood. In particular, the interaction sites between GW182 and the CCR4-NOT complex were previously unknown. Molecular biology experiments allowed the identification of CCR4-NOT interaction motifs on GW182. One of them is crucial for deadenylation, while the other is vital in mediating the interaction with CCR4-NOT via CNOT1, the scaffolding subunit of the CCR4-NOT complex. Biophysical experiments based on hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry allowed the identification of the corresponding binding site on CNOT1(800-999). Surprisingly, the binding site of the GW182 silencing domain was found to be at the same CNOT1(800-999) surface region as the binding site of tristetraprolin. Biochemical experiments excluded their simultaneous binding to CNOT1. The GW182 and tristetraprolin proteins share a common motif, RLPXφ, that interacts with CNOT1 in a very similar, but not identical, manner. This sequence has been proposed to act as a short linear motif. Thus, the two different gene silencing pathways: miRNA-mediated silencing and ARE-mediated silencing intersect at CNOT1, which serves as a molecular hub. The structural dynamics of the GW182 silencing domain and the CNOT1(800-999) fragments were also studied. The GW182 silencing domain was experimentally proved to be natively unstructured except for an RNA-recognition motif (RRM) domain. The GW182 RRM domain was found to be a loose structure, contrary to the CNOT1(800-999) structure that was found to be very rigid. Experiments performed in this thesis have led to the discovery of the interaction sites between the natively disordered GW182 silencing domain and the helical CNOT1(800-999) protein fragment, contributing to the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of recognition within protein complexes involved in gene silencing in different physiological processes.
W szczególności, nieznane były miejsca odpowiedzialne za tworzenie kompleksu pomiędzy GW182 a CCR4-NOT. Doświadczenia z zakresu biologii molekularnej pozwoliły na identyfikację miejsc wiążących CCR4-NOT w sekwencji domeny wyciszającej białka GW182.
