Abstract:
Gunther Schuller is credited with coining the term Third Stream, meaning compositions where twentieth-century art music forms exist simultaneously with jazz. Furthermore, Schuller specifically states in the liner notes to the debut recording of Eine Kleine Posaunenmusik "The work is not a Third Stream piece." Yet the concerto alludes to jazz through a multitude of slide glissandi and plunger mute effects, Solotone mute passages, specific references to the jazz trombone styles of Tommy Dorsey and Lawrence Brown, musical quoting or indirect reference, and the use of a walking bass line in Movement V, Finale. What makes one piece Third Stream and another simply a modern composition with jazz implications? Is Third Stream primarily a compositional designation or a performance practice stipulation? How does a celebrated trombone soloist inspire and collaborate with a distinguished composer in the creation of a major work? The somewhat conspicuous title, Eine Kleine Posaunenmusik, seems to point towards Mozart's famous string serenade Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. What connection to Mozart, if any, does Schuller's title suggest? All of these questions are elucidated in this study through careful investigation and research of Gunther Schuller's Eine Kleine Posaunenmusik. New interviews with John Swallow and Gunther Schuller are included.

Abstract:
The subject matter of this doctoral work is the process by which black characters have become stereotypes in American cinema. The work shows how, very early on, American cinema, the first appearances of black people on screen gave rise to stereotypical black characters. The purpose of this work is to try and show that these very first caricatured, stereotypical, reductive and set images of black people have endured thereafter, in more or less varied forms, throughout American cinema’s history. The work is based on the five major stereotypical black figures listed by American historian Donald Bogle. The categories of stereotypes drawn by Bogle form the backbone of this work. Throughout the work, these black figures will be used as a benchmark to show that American cinema has both, tried to improve its portrayal of black characters while, at the same time, given in to the easy endless repetition of traditional figures. The aim of this dissertation being to provide an overview of black identity’s evolution in American cinema from the early days up until now, it will, therefore, focus on several genres, black and white actors and directors, and independent films, as well as films financed by Hollywood’s movie industry. By way of conclusion, the journey of black characters throughout this study is a long, arduous one. Inequalities remain. American audiences must, therefore, be wary of the persistence of classical representations of black characters, as such representations bring back ghost images that will continue to haunt American cinema for many years

Abstract:
There is always a desire to develop and offer the best and most protable products on the market. This master thesis in mechanical engineering investigates the possibility to reduce the costs of the bogie suspension on Volvo's articulated haulers. The so called stays in the existing bogie suspension are significant components that connects the axle housings to the frame. The existing solution consists of stays that are expensive, heavy and time consuming to manufacture. Concepts in CAD will be compared to each other and and all concept will be evaluated in more detail. Totally five concepts were generated and modelled. They were compared regarding strains on rubber parts, required stay dimensions, collision between different parts and axle movements. Two proceeded concepts for further development after the evaluation and two new concepts were generated. A new comparison was made with additional tests. Simulations conrmed that it was only possible to proceed with one of the two developed concepts because one of the concepts would require large dimensions to manage the applied forces. The selected concept was redesigned and adapted to be as realizable as possible. Bushing kits, reinforcements, and detailed designs of parts were considered. Simple FEMcalculations was only made on parts that wasn't depending on components on the frame since these calculations would be too advanced and time consuming. The resulting concept needs more work to be realizable since there are geometry optimization on molded components left as well as advanced calculations when integrating the solution on the frame. A weight loss ofapproximately 95kg and a cost reduction of 3700SEK was made. Further investigations has to be done to determine if it's possible to obtain a positive business case with the new bogie suspension.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Bogie frame is an important and integral member of bogie. In Indian Railways, LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches are used as passenger coaches. They are equipped with FIAT bogie frames. Inorder to overcome the limitations of the existing FIAT bogie frame structure, a new bogie frame structure namely New CASNUB Bogie Frame is designed to equip with LHB coach. The New CASNUB Bogie Frame design is validated by conducting Stress analysis using ANSYS Mechanical APDL software. The stresses induced in both the frame structures are compared. Stresses induced in the New CASNUB Bogie frame are lesser than in the FIAT Bogie frame and are within the allowable stress limits of material used. New CASNUB Bogie Frame can be used as an alternative for LHB coaches in Indian Railways.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

George Boole's transformation f(x)=x-1/x is an important example of a Lebesgue measure-preserving transformation of the real line. Generalized Boole transformations with finitely many singularities have been widely studied, and they are known to be measure-preserving, ergodic, conservative, pointwise ergodic, exact, and quasi-finite. We extend this work by considering a certain family of generalized Boole transformations that have infinitely many singularities. We assume that the closure of the set of singularities has Lebesgue measure zero. Transformations in this family are also known to be Lebesgue measure-preserving, and we prove that they are ergodic, conservative, pointwise dual ergodic, exact, and quasi-finite. We find the wandering rates and return sequences of these transformations, and under some further assumptions, we obtain a formula for their entropy. We also investigate the c-isomorphism of these transformations.

Rubin

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to describe the similarities and the differences between Boyle's position and Locke's on the primary and secondary quality distinction.
It is in the Corpuscular Hypothesis that Boyle draws the distinction between primary and secondary qualities. Locke not only accepts the Corpuscular Hypothesis but also presents some arguments to support it.
Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 respectively examine the differences in the positions of Boyle and Locke on primary and secondary qualities, in their lists of primary qualities, the terminologies they employ, and the scopes of their discussions. Little attention has previously been paid to these differences.
Chapter 3 discusses the essence of the primary/secondary quality distinction. My point is that the distinction between primary and secondary qualities is really a distinction between two kinds of powers for both Boyle and Locke.

Abstract:
This thesis comprises the only exhaustive examination to date of the life and career of Charles Boyle, 4th Earl of Orrery. Hailing from a family which dominated Anglo-Irish affairs throughout the 1600s, Orrery was an Irish peer of relatively modest means whose diverse career spanned not only politics and military affairs, but diplomacy, literary and scientific activities, and Jacobite conspiracies. His public career was facilitated in the 1690s by acclaim resulting from his role in the celebrated academic controversy between the Ancients and the Moderns. Court and family connections, associations acquired through scientific and literary interests, and his brother's untimely death enabled Orrery to win a Parliamentary seat and obtain an army commission, and, finally, to inherit the Orrery title and estates. Orrery's military and diplomatic activities were particularly noteworthy. Both were characterised by a sporadic, bitter rivalry with the Duke of Marlborough. Orrery's power and influence attained their greatest heights near the end of Queen Anne's reign and in the early years of the reign of George I. A client of John, 2nd Duke of Argyll for most of his life, Orrery remained closely linked to the Tory ministry of Oxford and Bolingbroke from 1710-1713 and played a crucial role in enabling that ministry to assume power. Later, due largely to personal dissatisfaction and misgivings about his future political prospects, Orrery reverted to a stance more palatable to the Hanoverian regime which was ushered in following Queen Anne's death in 1714. Orrery served briefly as Lord of the Bedchamber to George I, a position which afforded him intimate access to the sovereign and the court. Thereafter, however, Orrery's close ties to the previous administration apparently proved his undoing. By 1717 he had fallen from grace, lost all of his offices and perquisites, and defected to the parliamentary opposition. He then sought favour with the exiled Stuart Pretender, and later served as one of the principal Jacobite strategists in England during the 1720s. These activities led to charges of treason and a prolonged imprisonment in 1722-1723. Thereafter, Orrery lived out the rest of his life as a political outcast. He appears to have remained a devoted member of the opposition and a loyal Jacobite, although there is dubious evidence which suggests that he was in fact pensioned by the Hanoverians as a government informant. Orrery's rich career has been virtually ignored by scholars of the period. This thesis rectifies this neglect and in the process explores the world of early-eighteenth century diplomacy, court politics, intrigues, and intra-military rivalries.

Sperry, Brian James. "Complex Bogie Modeling Incorporating Advanced Friction Wedge Components." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33039.

Full text
Abstract:
The design of the freight train truck has gone relatively unchanged over the past 150 years. There has been relatively little change to the fundamental railway truck design because of the challenges of implementing a cost effective and reliable modification to designs that have proven effective in decades of operation. A common U. S. railway truck consists of two sideframes, a bolster, two spring nests, and four friction wedges. The two sideframes sit on the axels. The bolster rides on springs on top of the sideframes. The friction wedges also ride on springs on top of the sideframe, and are positioned between the bolster and sideframe, acting as a damping mechanism. Better understanding the dynamic behavior and forces on the bodies are critical in reducing unnecessary wear on the components, along with potential negative behavior such as loss of productivity and increase in operating costs. This thesis will investigate the dynamic behavior of the truck under warping conditions using a stand-alone model created in Virtual.Lab. This research covers two main areas. First, the full-truck model will be developed and its simulation results will be compared to test data from the Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI). Data was provided from warp testing performed at the TTCI facilities in the spring of 2008. Once validated, the model will be used to gain a better understanding of the forces and moments that are propagated through the system, and of the dynamics of all bodies. Due to costs and physical constraints, not every bogie component can be instrumented during test, so the computer model will be able to provide valuable information not easily obtained otherwise. Second, full-truck models using different contact geometry between the wedges, sideframes, and bolster will be compared. A model with extremely worn sideframes will allow for investigation into the effects of wear on the damping abilities and warp stiffness of the truck. Another model using split wedges will be compared with the previous model to investigate into the behavior differences in the truck using different types of wedges. By understanding the impact of different geometries on the overall performance of the truck, better decisions on design and maintenance can be made in the future. After creating the models, we found that the full-truck model created in LMS® Virtual.Lab compared well with the test data collected by TTCI. In the comparison with NUCARS® we determined that the stand-alone model, which incorporates the wedges as bodies, captures the warp dynamics of the truck better than NUCARS®, which models the wedges as connections. By creating a model with severely worn sideframes, we were able to determine that the truck loses its abilities to damp bounce in the system as well as to prevent warping when the components become sufficiently worn. The split-wedge model behaved similarly to the standard full-truck model for bounce inputs, but had a significantly different behavior in warp. Further development will be needed on the split-wedge model to be confident that it behaved as expected.

Abstract:
The research is divided into four related sections of work. The first relates to the rim wall wear of the existing unlubricated steel, and polyethylene centre bearing components. Based on these findings, the second and third sections of work includes materials characterisation of alternative centre bearing surfaces - plasma nitrided molybdenum steel and stellite 6 laser clad layers, respectively. Finally, in the last section of work, the reciprocating pin-on-plate wear test method is used to evaluate the friction and wear of the existing and alternative centre bearing materials. The worn dimensions of the AISI 1053 steel, Hadfield steel, and polyethylene centre bearing components were determined. The wear of the high density polyethylene centre bowl liner was negligible. The rim wall wear of the unlubricated steel components was greatest in the longitudinal direction, whilst there was negligible wear in the lateral direction. The average wear depth rate for the AISI 1053 steel top centre was approximately twice that of the Hadfield steel centre bowl liner. The cross-sectional microhardness and microstructure of one worn AISI 1053 steel top centre and two worn Hadfield steel centre bowl liners were determined. The worn Hadfield steel centre bowl liners showed significant near surface work hardening. The wear mechanism for the AISI 1053 steel top centre was plastic strain accumulation in conjunction with low cycle fatigue. The quench and tempered AISI 4016 molybdenum steel samples were plasma nitrided at 450, 500, 550 and 580 C using 75% N2: 25% H2 mixture gas for 5 hours. The microstructures of the coatings were determined using optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The treated samples were characterised using x-ray diffraction and vi microhardness. The optimum condition for this material was achieved at the temperature of 500 0C. Stellite 6 multi-track layers were laser clad onto mild and AISI 4016 steel substrates with a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser at 1800 W laser source power using four different processing speeds: 600, 900, 1200, and 1500 mm/min. The laser power, defocused laser spot size, and powder feed rate were held constant. The clad samples were characterised using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in conjunction with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Microhardness profiles of the clad layers and heat affected zones were determined. For both substrates the optimum processing speed is between 600 and 900 mm/min. Wear testing of Hadfield pin - AISI 1053 steel plate, Hadfield pin - untreated AISI 4016 steel plate, HDPE pin – Hadfield steel plate, Hadfield pin - plasma nitrided AISI 4016 steel (500 °C) plate, and Hadfield pin – laser clad Stellite 6 (600 mm/min) plate material pairs was conducted using the pin-on-plate reciprocating wear test method. The wear test conditions provided a good simulation of the rim wall operating conditions for the Hadfield steel pin – plasma nitrided AISI 4016 steel (500 °C) plate and Hadfield steel pin – laser clad Stellite 6 (600 mm/min) plate material pairs. The Hadfield steel pin – nitrided AISI 4016 steel (500 °C) plate material pair had the lowest wear under these wear test conditions, whilst it’s co-efficient of friction of 0.57 would make it suitable for use in lightly loaded (50 ton wagon mass) 3-piece freight bogies.

Reynes-Delobel, Anne. Paris 3, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002PA030092.

Abstract:
American modernist novelist and poet, Kay Boyle (1902-1992) has written an important body of works, which has raised - and still does - the interest of the critics and the publishers. Yet, paradoxically enough, Boyle's work is little known. This paradox may be explained by the brutal change which occurred at the beginning of the forties when the writer decided to give her work a political turn. However, the reasons for this transformation also seem to lie in the tensions which can be read in Boyle's writing from the very start of her literary career This study attempts to offer a critical assessment of Boyle's entire literary production through the analysis of her treatment of the image. Indeed, the image is the primary object of different experiments which give Boyle's writing its originality and aesthetic quality. More essentially, it is also at the core of a systematic questioning which reveals the writer's ambivalent feelings about it and provides an insight into her view of literature and Art

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this thesis, our goal is to propose a method for evaluating boolean operations on b-rep objects. The first chapter consists in a study of existing methods, depending on the types of the objects on which these methods apply. So we can emphasize the problems inherent in the algorithms of the boolean operations, in particular, computation approximations, large running times, sometimes non-connect results, a too large set of special cases and a difficult adaptation for all kinds of objects. In the second chapter, we propose a method for processing boolean operations on objects with planer faces. The main interest of this method is to solve a 3d problem with a 2D problem that is based on the processing of the faces of the two objects. The fundamental contributions are a rigourous formalization of the different processing which lead on a robust and reliable algorithm, and the processing of faces which can take in account non-eulerian objects. The third chapter proves that the best solution for adapting the previous method on objects with non planer faces consists in a pre-processing and a post-processing of the objects in order to use the method on polyhedra without any changes. In the fourth chapter, we show clearly the important alogrithmic developpment which has been necessary for implementating the different concepts described in the both chapter 2 and 3

Abstract:
This thesis explores the career of Lord Broghill, one of the most important politicians of the Civil War and Interregnum period. The first chapter looks at his political 'apprenticeship' in the late 1630s and early 1640s, and his place in the Boyle dynasty, which had a profound affect on his later career. Chapters two and three consider his experience of the Irish rebellion in the 1 640s; his involvement in the factionalism of his home province of Munster; and his contact with the political parties at Westminster. Chapter four evaluates Broghill's relationship with Oliver Cromwell, and charts his rise to the head of a distinct Irish Protestant party, with its own coherent political strategy for the 'settlement' of all three nations. From 1655 until 1656 Broghill was president of the council of Scotland, which is the subject of chapter five. There he tried to create a moderate, civilian administration, and to make compromises with the 'Resolutioners' within the Scottish Kirk. His activities can be seen to parallel the attempts of Henry Cromwell to bring stability to Ireland. In chapter six there is an attempt to step back from the narrative, and to examine two important influences on Broghill's political career in the 1650s: the perilous state of his finances, and the strength of his religious convictions, both of which encouraged him to push for 'settlement'. Chapter seven provides a detailed analysis of Broghill 's role in the 1656-7 parliament, his importance in framing the Humble Petition and Advice and the offer of the crown to Cromwell, and his skill in marshalling English, Irish and Scottish MPs in support of his reform programme. With so much at stake, Cromwell's refusal of the crown was a personal as well as a political disaster for Broghill and his allies. Chapter eight, which takes the form of an epilogue, follows Broghill's decline in influence and enthusiasm at the end of the decade, and suggests reasons for his support of the Restoration in 1660.

Abstract:
In this thesis I trace the relations between thinking about space and the spatiality of thought as it relates to epistemology in the eponymous authors. I argue that the verbal, visual, and mental tools used to negotiate the ideas and objects under consideration are not merely representative or rhetorical, but are part of the process of knowledge-making itself. I contend that the spatialities of language, visual presentation, and mental image facilitate new ways of seeing and the exploring of previously invisible relationships. I show how the dynamic spatiality of the imagination is used for testing hypothesis, considering multiple points of view, accommodating uncertainties, and thinking about expansive ideas that push at (or exist beyond) the boundaries of the known or possible. In this way I offer new readings of key texts that foreground the inherent relativity of human experience, which I contend is at the heart of a scientific uncertainty found even in the new science that strove for objectivity. In four case studies I explore the elationship between external and internal space in the thinking and perceiving subject, building on Steven Connor's assertion that ‘thinking about things is unavoidably a kind of thinking about the kind of thing that thinking is' (‘Thinking Things', 2010). In addition to this unidirectional relation between thinking and things, I demonstrate a complex dialogue between interior (thought) and exterior (thing) that occurs in the ways processes of thought and perception are externalized on the page and with instruments of viewing; in the way objects are brought into the mind; and in the way the mind creates infinities within by tracing expansive external spatialities.

Robotic rovers have become important tools in planetary exploration. Future missions require improved rover performance. This thesis presents an analysis of a six-wheeled prototype rover. Its design is based on the rockerbogie configuration. A procedure is presented which can rapidly compute the configuration of the rover as a function of its environment. Also, a quasi-static force analysis of the system is detailed. It considers realistic physical constraints such as wheel slip and actuator saturation. A computer simulation with a graphic interface is developed to evaluate performance and enhance the understanding of the system. The analysis leads to the design of a fuzzy logic controller that increases rover traction and mobility. Analytical and experimental studies are performed to validate the analysis and control scheme.

Abstract: Carnival is tomorrow backyard: Knowledge and educational practices at Bole-Bole Samba School in Belem/PA had the intention of identifying and reveal the knowledge constructed in the daily life of a samba school, to be recognized and shared with the school ones. It brings as structural problem to achieve a search in a carnival community of the Para State Capital looking for unveiling knowledge and existing educational practices in this space of cultural effervescence as this knowledge also express the culture and identity of a group or community. These questions point to the following problem: what are the knowledge and educational practices regular built in the daily life of a samba school and how the experience in this space can be remarkable for the cultural identity of a social group, from the constituent subjects of this group? In order to provide some parameters for this problem, my samba-theme (text-thesis) was developed in synopsis of the plot (introduction), three verses (chapters) and the samba closure (conclusion). The first stanza has an inspiration, Carnival and a Samba School; the second, Bole-Bole Samba School: ranges of story to tell and the third, Bole-Bole beyond the parade: the non-formal education. The speech of the school highlights (respondents) had total freedom to travel in all the verses. To add life to the stanzas of this samba I counted on the luxurious cooperation of nine school highlights (respondents), divided into two groups. One group was the one that had some administrative and artistic connection to Bole-Bole. The other one was made up of people served by projects of Bole-Bole, which have become professionals from learning at the school projects and becoming hence currently multipliers. The methodology used to perform the treatment of the interviews was transcreation (Meihy, 2005; Vilela, 2010). Transcreation is the last step of a process consisting of three steps, the first being the transcription and the second the textualization. This thesis indicates that there is knowledge and educational practices being conveyed on samba school space, which are formatted through workshops, learned in practice, implicit in interpersonal relationships and experiences performed within the samba school. Knowledge able to transform, to give a direction, to take the blindfold off. This knowledge that needs to be recognized and well exploited

Abstract:
Given a smooth function ˜ f defined on a neighborhood of the euclidian sphere of dimension n in the ball, is it possible to extend it to a function defined on the ball which has no critical points ? This thesis studies this question, assuming the f, the restriction of ˜ f to the sphere, is Morse. This problem was first introduced by Blank and Laudenbach in 1970. We give a necessary condition of extension without critical points that is based on Morsehomology and the repartition of the critical set of f into two sets : the set of points whosenormal derivative to the sphere interior to the ball is negative and the set of points whosenormal derivative is positive. This necessary condition is of algebraic nature and uses great theories of the second half of the XXth century, namely cobordism theory of Thom, Smale,Milnor etc. It also leads to a sufficient condition in some interesting cases, and to a weaker necessary condition for a general function ˜ f which is easily computable. The point-of-view is the one of Barannikov, who was the first to tackle this problem bymeans of considerations about path of functions

Abstract:
This project proceeds from the premise that the historical and logical value of Boole's logical calculus and its connection with Frege's logic remain to be recognised. It begins by discussing Gillies' application of Kuhn's concepts to the history oflogic and proposing the use of the concept of research programme as a methodological tool in the historiography oflogic. Then it analyses'the development of mathematical logic from Boole to Frege in terms of overlapping research programmes whilst discussing especially Boole's logical calculus. Two streams of development run through the project: 1. A discussion and appraisal of Boole's research programme in the context of logical debates and the emergence of symbolical algebra in Britain in the nineteenth century, including the improvements which Venn brings to logic as algebra, and the axiomatisation of 'Boolean algebras', which is due to Huntington and Sheffer. 2. An investigation of the particularity of the Fregean research programme, including an analysis ofthe extent to which certain elements of Begriffsschrift are new; and an account of Frege's discussion of Boole which focuses on the domain common to the two formal languages and shows the logical connection between Boole's logical calculus and Frege's. As a result, it is shown that the progress made in mathematical logic stemmed from two continuous and overlapping research programmes: Boole's introduction ofmathematics in logic and Frege's introduction oflogic in mathematics. In particular, Boole is regarded as the grandfather of metamathematics, and Lowenheim's theorem ofl915 is seen as a revival of his research programme.

The forest industry in Sweden covers 28 million hectare as productive woodland. The soil is important for the forests ecosystem and the soils performance is decreased with increased soil compaction. In order to reduce the impact on the soil done by forest machinery a conceptual suspension axle is presented with the purpose to replace traditional bogie axle system on the trolley part on forwarders. This thesis goal is to determine if the proposed suspension concept isaviableoptionintheforestryindustryintermsofstrengthanddurabilityoftheconstruction and manufacturing cost. The project focus primary on suspension and will not focus on the overall design of the trolley.Amodelisdevelopedwhichisbasedonaideaandmodelprototype. Thegoalofthemodelling is to achieve a construction that allows the suspension to be extended or intended while still beingabletoturnthewheels. Threedifferentloadscasesistested, astaticloadcasewherethree loads are applied to the simulation model, the second case is a fatigue analysis and the third case is a collision case analysis. Each load case is simulated at two different model cases, one with the suspension located at the center, the middle case, and one case with the suspension located at the end point, the extended case. Resulting in a total of six simulations for each design. The final suspension design have a total weight of 1140 kg of one suspension and fulfills the product specification on all but one points, the desirable turning radius. The static analysis showednocriticalpointforneithertheinitialdesignorthefinaldesigninneithertheintended or extended case, but showed higher stress levels when the model was simulated at the extended case. The fatigue results showed similar results between the initial and final design because of the critical points parts where not redesigned between the designs. The collision caseshowedsimilarcriticallyforcebetweenthedesigns,aforceofapproximately70kNand40 kN for the middle and extended case respectively is required to reach the yield strength when colliding with an object. The cost of producing one suspension is estimated to 45800 SEK and is calculated through the tool costing for designer (CFD), which estimates the manufacture cost at an early design phase. The material cost for the suspension is the largest expanse covering roughly 73% of the total cost. In order to conclude if the suspension generates lower soil compaction compared to traditional bogie axles, a experimentally test is the optimal procedure. To be able to conduct this kind of field test the model have to be further refined to be able to produce.Theworkconcludestheproposedsuspensionsystemwiththefinaldesign, intermsofstrength and durability of the construction and the estimated cost, is possible to function in the forestry industry with the restrictions used in this work.

Abstract:
A multi-body simulation study was undertaken to investigate the running behavior of a rail grinder vehicle with newly developed Ganz bogies. The main purpose of the simulations was to forecast and support the vehicle acceptance tests and support the ongoing development. A multi-body model was built in Simpack and the most critical force elements were isolated and validated by tests. Derailment safety was assessed based on both European and Australian standards. The vehicle's running stability was carried out for both standard (1435mm) and broad gauge (1676mm) versions. Vehicle sway characteristics were determined through the calculation of flexibility coefficient both numerically and analytically. A parametric study for primary vertical damper was undertaken to assess the empirically selected dampers and optimize the performance. The results show that the damping coefficient can be greatly reduced while maintaining acceptable running behavior, thus the lifetime of dampers can be increased. Based on stability investigations, yaw damper installation is not necessary, though the bracketry for the possibility of later installation will remain on the prototype bogie.

Consider an equivariant extension of graded separable G-algebras which admits a completely linear positive, grading preserving cross section (not necessary equivariant) of norm 1. We denote (X,G) an amenable topological transformation group of the sense of Anantharaman-Delaroche and Renault. We establish an injective morphism split concerning the Kasparov equivariant bifunctor RKKG(X;−,−). This inclusion in K-theory, allows to extend the half-exactness from the case of the proper algebras (which is analogue to the one obtained by Skandalis in the non-equivariant case) to the case of amenable group action. In particular, we will place ourselves in a significant case, that of hyperbolic displacements of the Poincar´e-Lobatschevsky geometry on the unit disc

Abstract:
This thesis aims to contextualise the disorder characteristic of Boyle's works at all stages of the compositional process, in terms of seventeenth-century discussions about structuring knowledge. This disorder is discussed by Boyle, his contemporaries and later scholars, but has previously been insufficiently understood in terms of his intellectual project. Chapter one shows that seventeenth-century models present correct ordering as determining the epistemological status of information. In particular, it is understood as the means of moving from 'historical' collections of factual data (including experimental results) to 'philosophical' knowledge. Disorderly works are inevitable in the intermediate stages of a progress from piecemeal, preparatory, probable natural history to natural philosophy. Chapter two opens my exploration of the material processes of Boyle's knowledge creation, by examining Boyle's manuscripts for evidence of his aspirations to and achievement of the systematic redistribution of factual data. His methods are contextualised via the stipulations of the commonplace method, and the practices of his contemporaries. Chapter three investigates the structures of Boyle'S published works (particularly his collections of essays), exploring his development of printed modes which resist characterisation as stable and complete. Boyle's piecemeal publications are situated in relation to those of his contemporaries, and especially the early Philosophical Transactions. Chapter four considers Boyle's prefatory representation of the disorder of his works in print, which emphasises the apparent failure of his work to conform to literary and philosophical expectations. Boyle presents his literary failings as rhetorically appropriate, however, given his subject matter and audience. The disorder of Boyle's works has been criticised from his own time on. Reevaluating their distinctive fragmentation in the light of the seventeenth-century understanding of the significance of the organisation of natural knowledge, my thesis suggests that their arrangement reflects, and constitutes, their intellectual scope. In their provisional forms, Boyle's experimental texts embody the intermediate epistemological status of their content
