Stoyanov, Yuri. "Apocryphal themes and apocalyptic elements in Bogomil dualist theology and their implications for the study of Catharism." Thesis, University of London, 2001. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.428986.

Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis is to establish the nature of the relationship between Bogomil dualist teachings and medieval Slavonic and Byzantine apocryphal literature in view of the increasing awareness that apocryphal works contributed important themes and imagery to Bogomil and, subsequently, Cathar traditions. The first chapter explores the character and the place of Bogomil monarchian and radical dualism in the overall history and typology of religious dualism in the light of the interrelations between earlier dualist trends and apocryphal traditions, which developed the diabological, cosmo gonic and apocalyptic themes, revived later in Bogomilism and Catharism. The second and third chapter investigate the relationship between Bogomilism and apocrypha like 2 Enoch, 3 Baruch, and The Sea of Tiberi as in view of the theories that their medieval Slavonic versions were edited in Bogomil circles and represent either earlier or later types of 'Bogomil apocrypha'. Based on the most recent developments in research on the pseudepigrapha and apocalypticism in early Judaism and Christianity, on their textual history and some unpublished Slavonic manuscripts, the analysis of their historical and theological provenance shows that despite the traces ofBogomil editing in some manuscripts, they cannot be defined as 'Bogomil apocrypha' , but served as principal sources for Bogomil dualist teachings. The exploration of the parallels and interchange between Bogomil dualist teachings and apocryphal traditions in the fourth chapter demonstrates the extent to which Bogomil diabology, cosmogony, anthropogony, biblical history, Christology and apocalypticism adopted and reinterpreted themes from apocryphal works such as 2 Enoch, 3 Baruch, The Apoca/ypse of Abraham, The Vision of Isaiah, The Questions of Bartholomew, The Sea of Tiberias and the Apocryphal Apocalypse of John. In contrast to some earlier approaches to Bogomil dualist theology, discussed in the second chapter, the demonstration of its wide-ranging use of earlier apocryphal and apocalyptic traditions highlights the need to explore its formation and elaboration as an essential aspect and outcome of the early development of Slavo-Byzantine Orthodox theology, culture and learning. The present reconstruction of the relationship between apocryphal literature and Bogomilism has significant implications for the study ofCatharism in several important areas: the perceived and actual links between heresy and literacy in medieval Christianity in general; the Cathar adoption of the practice of creating new elaborations, oral or written, of apocryphal traditions inherited from Bogomilism and the related Bogomil and Cathar revivals and re-interpretations of notions and attitudes rediscovered in the apocryphal works, dating from late antiquity, a process which rarely find parallels in medieval heterodox and heretical traditions.

Young, Philippa Anne Victoria. "A local earthquake study near Lake Bogoria in the Kenya Rift." Thesis, University of Leicester, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/34988.

Full text
Abstract:
A 20 X 30 km2, 15 station, seismic network operated for 3 months in 1985, near Lake Bogoria in the Kenya Rift. The array provided both continuous and triggered seismic data. This thesis is concerned with the local earthquakes which occurred within 30 km of the network, in a 50 X 80 km2 study area including parts of the Rift shoulder and the central trough. 572 small events (ML < 2.7) could be located accurately (+2 km) in 3 dimensions. Unexpectedly, most of the seismic activity is associated with the major faults of the Rift shoulder, rather than the younger, minor faults in the central trough. A linear group of events in the central trough do not correspond to any surface feature, and seem to indicate a buried fault. The depth distribution of the seismicity peaks at 9 km and diminishes below 12 km, and the "brittle-ductile" transition is inferrred to occur within a 12 - 16 km depth range. This distribution is similar to those in other young intracontinental regions, suggesting a normal crustal rheology. Only a few events provided well-constrained focal mechanisms. Normal, steeply dipping, N-S striking fault plane solutions could be fitted to almost all events in the central trough. 12 of the best solutions were used to determine the stress orientation, the results indicated near-horizontal E-W extension, but this direction was poorly constrained. Suitable seismograms displayed shear wave polarisation and splitting compatible with the predictions of Extensive Dilatancy Anisotropy (EDA) theory. Instrinsic anisotropy, due to the basement fabric, is probably present, but the EDA should dominate the observations, thus allowing a determination of present-day stress orientation. Suprisingly, two dominent polarisation directions were seen in different parts of the array, indicating a change from E-W to NW-SE "tension" within the network.

Abstract:

Focusing on the works of the Rumanian philosopher Emil Cioran (1911-1995), this study proposes an anthropological approach in order to elucidate the author s conception regarding human being. Cioran s writings portrait man as an essentially infirm being, idea from which this study takes off so as to explain what lies behind his anthropological pessimism. For such, it takes gathering, analyzing and interpreting the reflections offered by him on human being his origins, condition, history and destiny and that are spread out throughout his books. Besides, some of his critics will contribute to sustain the hypothesis: more than just a philosopher, Cioran is a religious thinker, whose pessimistic conception regarding human condition is rooted in gnostic soil. As it is intended to be demonstrated, his connections with gnosticism go way beyond a mere intellectual affinity, involving as well a kinship with the bogomils, a gnostic sect which settled in the Balkans during the Middle Ages and which is supposed to have had a significant role in shaping Rumania s cultural identity. Furthermore, it intends to argue that the crisis of insomnia endured by Cioran in his youth period has a cognitive and spiritual character allowing her to be interpreted as a gnosis. At last, this study commits itself with sustaining the following thesis: much more than his readings, it is rather his insomniac experience that turns out to be the decisive event responsible to shape his thought from then on, including his world and man view

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation the rights of women are investigated with special reference to Monyaise's novel, Bogosi Kupe. The description is based on the theory offeminism and womanism. Among those scholars who have discussed theories on feminism are Ashworth (1995), Lovenduski and Randall (1993), Ryan and Van Zyl (1992), Besley and Moore (1989), Nosizwe Mrwebi (1996) and Phindile Xaba (1999). Among those who have advanced theories on womanism are Alice Walker and Chekwenye Okonjo Ogunyemi (1997), Cannon (1995), Lovenduski and Randall (1993), Collins (1990) and Jones e.a. (1994). The main aim of the dissertation is to investigate the two narratologicallevels of the novel, Bogosi Kupe, namely content and plot structure, with special attention to the rights of women. Furthermore, the concept of feminism is discussed as the movement that fights for the rights of women. In this investigation the two concept to define and to interpret are also examined. Furthermore, the examination follows the adapted narratological model of theorists such as Mojalefa and Groenewald. In terms of this model, a literary text operates on three levels: content level, plot level and style level. Bogosi Kupe is discussed within the framework of this adapted narratological model, with the focus being on the first two levels, namely, content level and plot level. The concept topic is highly significant with regard to the content level because it links the events of the content level, coherently. In Monyaise's text, Bogosi Kupe, the topic has been identified as exhorting or inspiring women to fight for their rights. This topic determines the relationship between all the events on the content level. On the plot level, the theme is strongly emphasised as the most important component of the plot structure because it also links the events of the plot level coherently. The events in Bogosi Kupe are arranged and linked by means of specific techniques to highlight the author’s intention. Title, as an element of plot level is also investigated as it plays a significant role in making the reader aware of the distinguishing name of the literary text and also in enunciating the type of the literary text. Another component which is also considered as vitally important when analysing plot structure, is the design which is the framework in which the story is rooted. Furthermore, design has been described as having two parts which determine plot structure of a particular literary text so that the message is highlighted by the theme and thus well disclosed to the reader. In that way, design in the text can be discussed as having two special functions which are firstly, to identify the type of literary work and secondly to examine characterization. It has been observed that Bogosi Kupe, also falls within the category of womanism because it reflects certain features of womanism. F our phases of the plot, namely exposition, development, climax and denouement have also been examined as the pillars of literary text. In the exposition phase, the first conflict is discussed in terms of the technique of fore shadowing to highlight the rights of women for which Matlhodi strives for. The events, in the development phase are arranged and linked by means of nineteen techniques to form a unit. In the climax phase, Monyaise uses three techniques namely, flashback, frequency and contrast, to highlight the power of modernism in contrast to traditionalism. In the denouement phase, the author uses three basic techniques namely, frequency, elision and symbol to reflect the dawn of civilization and the fading out of tradition. Monyaise concludes Bogosi Kupe with an important occasion in which characters celebrate the advent of civilization. These events are also arranged and linked by means of three basic techniques which are related to the theme of this novel.

Abstract:
Aim of the study The aim of this study was to determine how a character should be represented theoretically and to investigate the representation of the characters in Bogosi Kupe by D.P.S. Monyaise. Methodology It was decided to use an eclectic approach as the theories of various literature theorists were compared and the most suitable theoretical elements chosen. A conclusion was reached after a thorough literature study was completed. Contents of the study Chapter 1 This chapter consists of a brief introduction, the motivation, aim and methodology followed in this dissertation. Chapter 2 A biography of the author, D.P.S. Monyaise, is given in this chapter. The biography is deemed important for this study on the basis of the psychoanalytic approach. Chapter 3 A study of characters and characterisation is done in this chapter, and a theoretical framework determined. This information is then represented grammatically. Chapter 4 A synopsis of the story is given in Afrikaans so that students not fluent in Tswana can roughly follow the story. The characters are then classified on the basis of Greimas' actantial model. This classification is done on the grounds of each character's involvement with the intrigue of the story. In the following three chapters, the characters are analysed separately according to the theoretical framework proposed in chapter three. The separation of the characters rests on the classification done in chapter four, and the characters are therefore studied as follows: Chapter 5 Characters involved in the lovers' intrigue. Chapter 6 Characters involved in the captaincy intrigue. Chapter 7 Characters involved in both the intrigue structures. Chapter 8 The conclusion of the study. It has been shown that general literary theory can be applied to certain literature. Individual differences, for example cultural differences, however, necessitate certain adaptations. It has been determined from this study, therefore, that characterisation in D.P.S Monyaise's novel, Bogosi Kupe, can be analysed according to general literary theory.
