Abstract Colombia’s capital city Bogota was founded in 1538 by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, a Spanish Conquistador who came down from the north to reach the Sabana de Bogotá, i.e. the intermountain plateau (and “Savannah”) around Bogota. The whole region was already well-developed by then, and inhabited by the Muisca people. Their settlements were dispersed across the plateau, though only rarely did these encompass flat areas suitable for crop-growing. Today’s Bogota is the largest metropolitan area in the country, with more than 8 million residents currently, and occupying a considerable part

Responding to Bogota's problem of insecurity, CHPs are groups of dwellings that are organised around, or within, outdoor communal grounds closed to the public and surveyed by an armed guard.<br>The CHP, however, is much more than gates and guns. Due to its enclosure, it is isolated from Bogota's troubled urban setting. As a result, the CHP has become a marketing phenomena packaged and promoted by developers as an escape from many of the social problems of living in Bogota. The con

In recent years there has been an extensive output on challenges to democratization, peace building and the strengthening of the rule of law in Colombia. These have tended to focus on their more violent or overt impediments, particularly in rural areas of the country where the monopoly on force and interventionist capacity of the state has never been established, and how this will impact the implementation of the Peace Accords. The overarching objective of this research is to mine the contradictions, occlusions and erasures in these macro-narratives of Colombia’s current post-conflict period.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter aims to analyse how public policies can influence the development of clusters around the cultural and creative industries (CCIs), more specifically the music sector in the case of Bogota, the capital of Colombia. Since the 1990s, the cultural and creative industry has attracted academia and governments across the world to create clusters and economic development, mainly in developing countries such as Colombia. Yet to ensure music industry success, public policies that improve CCIs’ resources and capacities need to be provided. This paper focuses on the impact of public policies on CCIs in Bogota and how different clusters have been created, especially related to music. Moreover, we examine how national strategy has had a positive influence on local strategy with clusters being boosted in devalued areas of the city, bringing improvements in their economic development.

Abstract:
Abstract 5Bogota: Travel with Locals was established in 2013 with the goal of promoting creative tourism in Colombia. This start-up was conceived as a marketplace connecting local hosts with foreigners wishing to explore the city through different eyes, while fostering local sustainable development in the places they visit. Our experience with Colombian start-up 5Bogota (Bogota through the 5 Senses) underlines the importance of a methodical process integrating the creation of unique tourism experiences with the marketing strategies necessary for the development of a profitable business model, thus ensuring the social impact sought by the concept of creative tourism. This brief text outlines the methodology used to create and consolidate the experiences offered by 5Bogota. The methodology comprises eight stages, including context analysis, the study of the destination's characteristics, the establishment of the typology for the traveller and for the local host, the design of the tourism product, and the marketing strategy. In closing, a series of conclusions are presented to share the lessons learned through the application of this methodology at 5Bogota, and to identify the main key success factors for entrepreneurship in creative tourism.

Abstract:
This paper studies whether household surveys precisely identify the LGBT population and are suitable to measure labor market discrimination in Colombia. We first quantify the size of the LGBT population and estimate labor market inequalities from these data, highlighting potential pitfalls from using this approach. We then present findings from a list experiment in Bogotá, Colombia. Results show that household surveys underestimate the size of the LGBT population and may yield biased estimates of labor market inequalities. While survey estimates range between 1-4%, we find that LGBT people con

Gains from government crime-reducing programs are not always visible to the average citizen. The media overexpose crime events, but the absence of crime rarely makes the news, increasing the risk that citizen may have inaccurate perceptions of security. Through a survey experiment carried out in Bogota, Colombia, a city that experienced a substantial reduction in homicides over the last decade, as well as a noticeable drop in robberies, this paper tests the effect that communicating objective crime trends could have on such perceptions.
