Abstract:
Experience and reflection of old age in selected Bohumil Hrabal’s novels from the 70sThis study contains an interpretation of two novels written by Bohumil Hrabal, Too Loud a Solitude and Harlequin’s Millions, focusing on the poetic rendition of old age on the background of a certain idea about human life as well as an experience and reflection of old age in the consciousness of main characters. In these novels there are two concepts of the run of human life: in Too Loud a Solitude it is a dynamic and dialectical opposition of youth and old age characterizing individual human life, but also the dynamics of historical development; in Harlequin’s Millions we can find the traditional concept of human life as a circle analogous to the seasons and months of the year. Haňťa, the character of Too Loud a Solitude, is living either through his memories, or through his work, by which he is being ritually placed beyond the framework of time. Marie, the protagonist of Harlequin’s Millions, also lives in her memories, and though she emphatically and with interest perceives her surroundings and day to day events in a retirement home, she does not live in the real spacetime, because her imagination transforms her reality so much, so that it becomes an intricately constructed and strongly surrealistic fiction. Marie, protagonistka Harlekýnových miliónov, žije tiež spomienkami, a hoci živo a so záujmom vníma svoje okolie a dianie v domove dôchodcov, nežije v reálnych časopriestorových súradniciach, pretože skutočnosť, ktorú vníma, presycuje natoľko svojou imagináciou, že sa jej realita stáva zložito konštruovanou a výrazne kontrarealistickou fikciou.

Abstract:
The object of the analysis is the so-called Szczecin episode in its many variants. The episode plays a significant role in interpreting the novel Too Loud a Solitude, the Czech version of which is a source text for a number of foreign translations. As such, the episode creates space for specific translation operations that are possible in some languages (e.g. Polish and German), while impossible in other.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article aims to interpret the so-called ‘animal prose’ by Bohumil Hrabal using some of the contemporary tools developed within animal studies, especially those that directly or indirectly address the broadly understood question of hunting. By ‘animal prose’ the author of this article understands these works by the Czech writer whose protagonists or narrative personae are wild, domesticated and breed animals, including the domestic and homing pigeons. All Hrabal’s works show a discernible tension in the human protagonists, torn between the species guilt and the realization that a return to the natural state is a classic example of wishful thinking.

Abstract:
Whilst Bohumir Prokupek's body of work is still awaiting its thorough assesment, an aim to examine and give idea of his life journeys is a subjectmatter of this work. Ideally the work is, in its form, supposed to contain both experimental research and a search for lost time, connecting facts, bare and earthy language and something of Proust's art: to make remebering of someone we loved a gentle stream, to ensure that reader connects memories in pictures and scents of his own imagination. Hence this work is not divided into chapters. Time line of separate stories is rather respected here, in details a literary filter is given precedence. Events are therefore presented as they came with their testimonies, at times repeated intentionally. Personal point of view of the photographic work offers some personal detachment in the Conclusion, substatiation of this approach is then stated in the Introduction.

The life and work of Bob Krčil have so far been known from fragments and unsubstantiated legends. The aim of this essayistic piece is to lay out the deeper motives of his personal trajectory, photographic oeuvre, and activities for the Czech exile community. Krčil’s photographic body of work is inseparably connected with his eventful life. The writing of the thesis was preceded by tracking down and putting together Krčil’s fragmented estate, sorting out his correspondence and writings, and interviewing people who knew him personally. By drawing on these materials, the thesis aims to provide insight into the life and motivations of this important figure of Czech exile culture.

Paris 4, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA040084.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis concerns the 1950s-1970s, a period of renewal of the avant-garde practices after the Second World War. It focuses on the analyses of collage and montage in the works of Bohumil Hrabal (1914-1997) in comparison with those of Claude Simon (1913-2005) and of experimental poetry, particularly that of Brion Gysin (1916-1986) and William S. Burroughs (1914-1997)’s cut-up. Without neglecting the different sociocultural contexts of the ‘post-avant-garde’ in Czechoslovakia and the western ‘neo-avant-garde’, this work mainly concentrates on the aspects of memory, history and destruction, the major features of the collages and montages of Bohumil Hrabal. Coming from an avant-garde heritage and infused with subversive power, these collages and montages elucidate the development of the avant-garde after the Second World War that profoundly changed the development of art. Since collage and montage can transcend the boundaries of different art forms, taking into account works of art in the concerned period is an integral part of the analysis. In this period the practice of collage and montage goes hand in hand with the philosophical and ethical reflections on the ruin of western civilization

"Bohumir Kryl (1875-1961): An American Musical Icon." Doctoral diss., 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.53599.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: For those familiar with the name of Bohumir Kryl, he may be known simply as a cornetist who regularly utilized the extreme pedal register of his instrument. However, his life was much more complex than that. Born in 1875 near Prague, Kryl was trained by his father as a sculptor, and, for a brief stint in his childhood, he was a circus tumbler. Returning to his family vocation, he traveled with them to America and spent much of the 1890s sculpting the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument and busts on the English Hotel in Indianapolis, as well as the friezes adorning the Lew Wallace study in Crawfordsville, Indiana. In the late 1890s, he left sculpting to become a professional cornet soloist, touring with the bands of John Philip Sousa and Frederick Innes, among others. Kryl soon garnered the title of World’s Greatest Cornetist. He formed his own band in 1906 and continued to solo and conduct well into the 1930s, eventually becoming known as one of the five greatest bandmasters in the world. He stopped soloing in the 1930s, but continued to conduct various orchestras until the late 1940s, gaining notoriety for his women’s orchestra. He also became infamous in the way he chose to parent his two daughters. He was financially successful, spending a short time as a bank president in the 1920s and amassing a significant art collection over the span of his life. When he died in 1961, he was worth nearly $2,000,000. This document is the first comprehensive biography of the extraordinary life of Bohumir Kryl. Many documents were reviewed in preparation for this biography, including thousands of newspaper articles, telegrams, and letters. Much of Kryl’s personal correspondence used for this study was acquired through the Redpath Chautauqua Collection, located in the University of Iowa Library in Iowa City. Because there are few secondary sources, this biography of Kryl is based on these primary sources, which were carefully organized, reviewed, and documented. Their wealth of information has allowed this study to offer a complete and multifaceted picture of the life and times of Bohumir Kryl.

Abstract:
In my diploma thesis, I looked at part of Prague 8 - Libeň, in the kontext of the life and work of writer Bohumil Hrabal. I tried to show Libeň in the twentieth century, when the famous writer lived there. At first I made efforts to describe Bohumil Hrabal's life and Libeň, how we can find it in his books. Than I outlined the history of Libeň. In the main part I tried to show real locations in Libeň, which Bohumil Hrabal visited and he liked them. It was mainly Libeň castle, a lot of views of hills in Libeň, the vicinity of Vltava river and Rokytka brook and atmosphere of pubs in Libeň. The diploma thesis shows Libeň in last century especially in the kontext of Hrabal's trialogy Weddings in the house.
