Abstract:
Experience and reflection of old age in selected Bohumil Hrabal’s novels from the 70sThis study contains an interpretation of two novels written by Bohumil Hrabal, Too Loud a Solitude and Harlequin’s Millions, focusing on the poetic rendition of old age on the background of a certain idea about human life as well as an experience and reflection of old age in the consciousness of main characters. In these novels there are two concepts of the run of human life: in Too Loud a Solitude it is a dynamic and dialectical opposition of youth and old age characterizing individual human life, but also the dynamics of historical development; in Harlequin’s Millions we can find the traditional concept of human life as a circle analogous to the seasons and months of the year. Haňťa, the character of Too Loud a Solitude, is living either through his memories, or through his work, by which he is being ritually placed beyond the framework of time. Marie, the protagonist of Harlequin’s Millions, also lives in her memories, and though she emphatically and with interest perceives her surroundings and day to day events in a retirement home, she does not live in the real spacetime, because her imagination transforms her reality so much, so that it becomes an intricately constructed and strongly surrealistic fiction. Marie, protagonistka Harlekýnových miliónov, žije tiež spomienkami, a hoci živo a so záujmom vníma svoje okolie a dianie v domove dôchodcov, nežije v reálnych časopriestorových súradniciach, pretože skutočnosť, ktorú vníma, presycuje natoľko svojou imagináciou, že sa jej realita stáva zložito konštruovanou a výrazne kontrarealistickou fikciou.

The object of the analysis is the so-called Szczecin episode in its many variants. The episode plays a significant role in interpreting the novel Too Loud a Solitude, the Czech version of which is a source text for a number of foreign translations. As such, the episode creates space for specific translation operations that are possible in some languages (e.g. Polish and German), while impossible in other.

Abstract:
The article aims to interpret the so-called ‘animal prose’ by Bohumil Hrabal using some of the contemporary tools developed within animal studies, especially those that directly or indirectly address the broadly understood question of hunting. By ‘animal prose’ the author of this article understands these works by the Czech writer whose protagonists or narrative personae are wild, domesticated and breed animals, including the domestic and homing pigeons. All Hrabal’s works show a discernible tension in the human protagonists, torn between the species guilt and the realization that a return to the natural state is a classic example of wishful thinking.

Abstract:
One of priority directions in cultivation of carrots is development of new techniques in technologies allowing to increase not only the yield, but also the quality of root crops. Treatment of vegetative plants with various biological products, growth regulators and hemin preparations is the most promising technological method for increasing carrots yield and quality. The purpose of the research is to study the effect of liquid-phase biological means of various natures on yield and quality of Karini variety carrots grown on peat soil. The experiment had been carried out in 2015-2016 on peat soil of the Dmitrovsky department of VNIIMZ branch FRC V.V. Dokuchaev Soil Science Institute (Moscow region). Two microbiological preparations (LPB and Azotovit) and two humic (BoHum and FlorHumat) were tested. Azotovit and FlorHumat are known registered preparations, and LPB and BoHum are the latest developments of VNIIMZ. The biological means were applied three times during growing season against the background of the main fertilizer P40K60. The largest increase in carrot yield was obtained when using LPB and BoHum - 19.4 and 18.3 %. Humic preparations contributed to a higher level of mineralization processes in soil, providing plants with available nutrients. Improvement in quality indicators of carrots for all tested biological means was noted: a higher content of carotene in root crops in the variant with BoHum - 101 mg/kg, dry matter - when using Azotovit - 9.35 %, the minimum content of nitrates when using FlorHumat preparation - 101 mg/kg. In general, the impact mechanism of the biological means used was their complex effect on plants and soil, which is of certain value for fundamental research. The method of cluster analysis showed a high degree of similarity in efficiency of bio-means LPB and BoHum in terms of set of indicators (yield, quality of carrots, agro-chemical and microbiological indicators of soil). The most promising is the humic biological mean BoHum. The considered biological means used for cultivation of carrots on peat soils will improve provision of processing industry with a raw material base, and population with high-quality vegetable products.

The article deals with an reinterpretation of the motif of the library and librarian in the novel Too Loud a Solitude by Bohumil Hrabal. The library in this piece is not a repository of knowledge, but a collection of waste paper, just garbage pile for books. The protagonist, digging in this trash of culture, is trying to commit an act of artistic creation through the destruction of books. His reading strategies allow him to take on various figures − a Taoist scholar, Sisyphus, Faust, etc. A key reading for him, however, turns out to be Schopenhauer, from whom he learns that it is love and compassion which are the most important, and the state of absolute cognition is attained through an aesthetic attitude.

Abstract:
The aging and literatureThis contribution is focused on the specific reflection of the theme aging in Milan Kundera’s and Bohumil Hrabal’s work. During the reflection on their poetics and pursuit of its evolving, we can see to what extent the aging or youth is a function of literature. Literature and life are distinguished by the opposite characteristics which lead us to consideration that literature provides anchor for life. Literature is eternal youth of irrecoverably disappearing life.

In Rhododendron L. cv. Azuro, Bohumil Kavka, Catharine van Toll, Grandiflorum, Mars, Nova Zembla, Ortrud, Ovation, Prof. Scholz, Purple Splendour, Rebe and Van Werden Poelman, the effect of growth regulators on organogenesis induction of shoot-tip meristems was tested. All cultivars significantly showed the highest shoot regeneration on MS medium containing 6 mg/dm3 isopentenyladenine (2iP). For most rhododendrons, the highest shoot multiplication was found on a medium with 8–10 mg/dm3 2iP in combination with 1 mg/dm3 indoleacetic acid (IAA). Shoots rooted successfully in the substrate with high level of peat without growth regulators. However, the commercial preparation Racine significantly increased rooting in cv. Grandiflorum, Nova Zembla and Rebe compared with 0.03% indolebutyric acid (IBA).

AbstractRehabilitation of post-industrial areas involves many areas. The area after hard coal mines, requires many specific actions and funds in order to eliminate any remnants of the former infrastructure that is located in this area. The area of Upper Silesia, which includes areas on both the Polish and Czech borders, belongs to the area where the process of underground hard coal mining is being extinguished. As a result of the completion of mining works, the mine areas and adjacent sites begin to undergo transformations. Thus, the landscape of this area changes, various types of land, residential buildings and roads are destroyed. The activities related to restoring the utility value to degraded areas should be carried out consistently, primarily from their inhabitants’ perspective. The rehabilitation of post-mining area and its proper management can bring great benefits to the city and its inhabitants in the future. The publication presents a proposal for land development solutions for the former hard coal mine in Bohumin, Vrbice district in the Czech Republic.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper consists of confrontational analysis of two Czech translations of Alexander Blok’s famous poem “The Twelve”: one by Bohumil Mathesius published in 1925 (4th ed. 1977) which was considered canonical for many generations of Czech readers; and the most recent one published by Lubor Kasal in 2016. The present study tries to ascertain which translation is more accurate and closer to the Russian original and to identify the flaws and mistakes from the stylistic and semantic point of view which can be found in both translations. The paper discusses whether the two Czech translations under study render the same aesthetic experience for Czech readers as the original for its Russian readers. Both translations are closely examined with emphases on several important aspects: the semantic density of both the original and the Czech translations; the rhythm of the Russian poem and of its Czech versions; the choice of suitable equivalents in both translations. In the end, the assessment of Lubor Kasal’s Czech translation is overall positive, as it meets the requirements for the translator and his translation without serious reservations.

Abstract:
This article describes a largely unknown Swedish effort to intervene in deportations of Jews of Slovakia between 1942 and 1944. Swedish officials and religious leaders used their diplomatic correspondence with the Slovak government to extract some Jewish individuals and later on the whole Jewish community of Slovakia from deportations by their government and eventually by German officials. Despite the efforts of the Swedish Royal Consulate in Bratislava, the Swedish archbishop, Erling Eidem, and the Slovak consul, Bohumil Pissko, in Stockholm, and despite the acts taken by some Slovak ministries, the Slovak officials, including the president of the Slovak Republic, Jozef Tiso, revoked further negotiations in the autumn of 1944. However, the negotiations between Slovakia and Sweden created a scope for actions to protect some Jewish individuals which were doomed to failure because of the political situation. Nevertheless, this plan and the previous diplomatic interventions are significant for a description of the almost unknown Swedish and Slovak efforts to save the Jews of Slovakia. Repeated Swedish offers to take in Jewish individuals and later the whole community could well have prepared the way for larger rescues. These never occurred, given the Slovak interest in deporting their own Jewish citizens and later the German occupation of Slovakia.

Abstract:
Intensive underground exploitation took place in the area of the Ostrava corporate town in recent past. After the coal mining was shut down in 1994 gradual subsidence in the town area has slowed down, however, establishing of the Digital Technical Map of Ostrava (DTMMO) dates back to 1992. When working a seam the original geostatic and tectonic stress state in the surrounding rock mass changes, which is accompanied by rock transformation and displacement from the roof towards the stope. Undermining is manifested in landscape morphology in many different ways that we can divide to continuous and discontinuous deformations. Residual mining effects could therefore have impacted positional accuracy of DTMMO in the last 18 years. The Bohumín 8-9/43 topographic sheet was selected for testing purposes in the Přívoz cadastral district. Santrauka Netolimoje praeityje Ostravos, miesto Čekijos rytuose, savivaldybėje buvo intensyviai eksploatuojama žemė. Nustojus užsiiminėti angliakasyba, nuo 1994-ųjų, palaipsnis žemės smukimas miesto vietovėse sulėtėjo. Skaitmeninis techninis Ostravos žemėlapis (DTMMO) sukurtas dar 1992 metais.

Abstract:
This study investigated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) pollution of selected rivers in the Czech Republic. Integrated evaluation was carried out using combination of chemical and biological monitoring, in which we measured content of 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHP) in chub bile and priority PAH in water samples obtained by exposing the semipermeable membrane devices at each location. The concentrations of 1-OHP in bile samples and sum of priority PAH in water sampler ranged from 6.8 ng mg protein−1to 106.6 ng mg protein−1and from 5.2 ng L−1to 173.9 ng L−1, respectively. The highest levels of biliary metabolite and PAH in water were measured at the Odra River (the Bohumín site), which is located in relatively heavily industrialized and polluted region. Statistically significant positive correlation between biliary 1-OHP and sum of PAH in water was also obtained (P<0.01,rs=0.806).

Tlustý, Jan. "To See Oneself Through the Eyes of Others and Through the Eyes of Books: Perspective in Bohumil Hrabal’s Autobiographical Texts." Prace Filologiczne. Literaturoznawstwo, no. 8(11) cz.1 (June 28, 2019): 85–98. http://dx.doi.org/10.32798/pflit.57.

Abstract:
This study analyses the use of perspective in the autobiographical trilogy (In-House Weddings, Vita Nuova and Gaps) and the late “journalistic” texts by the Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal. The article examines Hrabal’s play with perspective on several levels: on the narrative level, Hrabal experiments with the narrative voice and focalization, and views himself through the eyes of his wife Elisˇka, who is also the narrator of the whole trilogy; this strategy allows him to gain distance from the “I-perspective” and to touch upon sensitive moments of his life (particularly auto-censorship, his relationship with the Communist authorities, and various fears). Furthermore, Elisˇka’s view clashes with the view of Hrabal as a character in the narrative world, which results in an original autobiographical polyphony; the article presents a detailed scrutiny of these perspectives with regard to time. Drawing from hermeneutics as a way of self-understanding shaped by texts and culture, the analysis of perspectivity will demonstrate that Hrabal also views himself through the eyes of books and cultural images; additionally, the article points to parallels with Hrabal’s other works, particularly Too Loud a Solitude. Finally, Hrabal’s playful use of perspective concerns the question of identity: the textual self that appears in the stream of images manifests itself in constant motion, thus unveiling the non-substantiality and openness of human identity. In this way, Hrabal’s writing about himself approximates the view of self in Eastern philosophies (esp. Buddhism and Taoism − Hrabal’s sources of inspiration) as well as contemporary cognitive approaches to the theory of autobiography (Paul John Eakin).

Abstract:
Oral history accounts area natural object of research for anthropologists, sociologists, researchers of cultural studies, ethnologists, as well as psychologists engaged in memory studies. As narratives of experience they became the antipositivist rebellion against the monopoly of major historical narratives that, according to the reflection of the second half of the 20th century, were supposed to lead to the catastrophes of war and genocide. In historiographic research the questioned positivist discourse based on the corresponding theory of the truth has become counterbalanced by the discourse of memory. As a consequence, also in historical research there is noticeable appreciation for other, non-classic, forms of historical narratives which include oral history accounts. What can a researcher of literary fiction contribute to reflections on oral history whose greatest value should be authenticity, this “truth of experience”? To what extent can literary texts in the convention of a narrative of appeal, first-person narrative, monologue (in which crucial roles are played by dialogue, orality and rhetoric of the text) be read in the perspective of oral history? When analyzing I Served the King of England novel by Bohumil Hrabal – author who by default rejects ‘the macrocosm’, the world of great politics, historical necessities, social processes, for the world of microcosm, i.e. a life of each person and what is more, he rejects any need for psychological or sociological (or any other) analysis of this microcosm – one can notice that the dichotomy of literary fiction and the authentic experience of oral history is not that obvious as it may seem. Categories of text, narration and memory, although analyzed from different research perspectives, are common for both forms.

Abstract:
The beginning of the article briefly outlines the history of Jindřichův Hradec from its foundation through its development in the 15th century and especially in the 16th century, until the 19th century, when the Landfras printing works functioned in the town. Afterwards, the article focuses on the Landfras family of printers and its work in Jindřichův Hradec. It deals with the founder of the printing works, Josef Jan Landfras (1869–1840), as well as with his family background and his public activities. Most attention is devoted to his successor, Alois Landfras (1797–1875), who became one of the most remarkable figures in the history of Jindřichův Hradec, because he was very actively involved in social events in the town. From 1841, he was a member of the town council; ten years later, he was elected mayor and remained in the position for ten years. His private and family life is marginally mentioned as well. The last member of the family active in the 19th century was Vilém Antonín Landfras (1830–1902), who was also a member of the town council. Thanks to him, the weekly Ohlas od Nežárky [Echoes from the River Nežárka] began to be published in the town in 1871. The article further mentions his important role in the organisation of the social entertainment of burghers and his family life. The end of the paper is devoted to his son, Vilém Bohumil Landfras (1865–1931), whose work falls into the first third of the 20th century.

Abstract:
Current design process can be simplified and accelerated, if computer simulation based on finite element method (FEM) is used. FEM numerical calculations of different wheels of railway wheelsets are investigated in the Department of Railway Engineering. The justification for undertaking this issue is that there is no methodology in the design of railway wheelsets both in Poland and abroad. In order to assess the calculation model, experimental tests of static loads (due to carriage weight) and thermal loads (due to braking) have been run. The results of these tests have been compared with the results of numerical analysis. The proposed calculation model has been compared with the results of test stand investigation. Comparison of the results has confirmed the correctness of the proposed discrete model and calculation algorithm. In the framework of the common scientific-didactic projects of Railway Engineering Department and Central Rail Research Institute in Moscow and producer of railway wheelsets-BONATRANS a.s. in Bohumin (Czech Republic), the method was worked out, and the experimental researches were conducted on specialists certified stands for railway wheelset researches (Sitarz, M., Bizoń, K., and Chruzik, K. Abstract:
An outline of past achievements in plant pathology in the CR and main recent problems of Czech plant pathologists are given. A description of the present state in plant pathology in the CR is preceded by data on the structure of CR, on its agriculture, research and development. The outstanding feature of the Czech agriculture is large-scale production. However, the CR still lags behind the EU in yields per hectare. Compared with the EU member states, the CR devotes less money (less then 0.7% of GDP) to research and development (R&D). The trend of state subsidies to R&D in the agriculture sector in current prices is stagnant. It represents an actual decline in the fixed prices. In the Czech Republic, approximately six hundreds persons are professionally engaged in plant health. It represents 6 professionals per 100 hundreds citizens in the CR. Around 160 persons deal with the research and/or teaching of plant pathology. Public service in the field of plant health (advisory work, extension or outreach activities) is one of the weak links in the system of plant health care in the CR. The reason is the lack of commitment for this field of plant health care activity together with absence of sufficient financial support. Minimum requirements for education should be set on advisors and provider of services in the field of plant health at the EU level. In the CR, there exists still some gap in scientific expertise of nematology and integrated pest management. The Czech Lands are proud of the role of some Bohemian and Moravian scientists who have been prominent in the development of plant pathology and related disciplines. These include: AUGUSTUS CARL JOSEPH CORDA and FRANTIŠEK BUBÁK in mycology, GREGOR JOHANN MENDEL in genetics, FRANTIŠEK KRÁL in bacteriology, BOHUMIL NĚMEC and EDUARD BAUDYŠ in plant pathology.

Abstract:
The development of railways brought a great era of tunnel construction in the 19thcentury. One of the greatest obstacles for the railway between Bohumín and Žilina was the Jablunkov Pass. In 1869 the excavation of the first Jablunkov Tunnel started. In 1914 the second one came. However in the era of modern railway corridors these tunnels are no longer satisfactory, so a process of their modernisation was launched. Eventually the second tunnel was re-bored as a two-track tunnel. In 2007 the construction started, but in 2009 an exceptional event occurred, which significantly delayed the whole construction work. During the subsequent clearing of the cave-in a part of the tunnel from the northern portal remained in its definitive lining. Another part was temporarily secured with a concrete plug, while the original primary lining was reinforced with a railway bridge pier (PIŽMO). To get through the caved-in section and the concrete plug it was necessary to deploy blasting too. This created an opportunity to perform a unique experimental measurement of the impact of vibrations on the definitive lining from various sources (blasting and hydraulic demolition hammer). The generated vibrations might negatively affect the already finished definitive lining. All measurements were performed in amplitude and frequency area and the results were drawn as attenuation curves corresponding to the propagation of vibrations through the definitive lining construction.
