Boiler Feed Water Pumps (BFWP) are considered a critical part of boilers in power plant operations. The performance of the pump in a system is estimated by one of these quantifiers in pump performance (power, efficiency, head, and flow). The design and balance of the drum in the boiler feed pump are critical for the smooth flow and optimum efficiency of the pump. The wearing tolerance limits of the drum are correlated with the type of pump and the characteristics of the system in which it is installed. This article discusses the performance problems associated with process water pumps. It highlights that at a boiler steam load in the 25% to 40% range, an automatic recirculation (ARC) valve is simply not accurate enough to detect a minimum pressure differential change of possibly 1–2 psig when the boiler drum level control valve closes for short-duration process demand changes. Converting the ARC valve to an electronic controller does not work reliably either. The amperage change is difficult to discern at low feedwater flow rates. Failure of the valve to open is a recipe for pump cavitation

Abstract Cavitation damage has been a limiting factor responsible for loss of performance, and eventual failure, in a variety of pumping applications, particularly boiler feed pump impellers. These have been prone to early cavitation damage as a consequence of the trend to use many feedpumps in cycling rather than continuous service, often at off-design conditions. This has contributed to expensive unplanned outages. Improved hydraulic design and advanced materials can be used to mitigate the effects of cavitation.
