DISSERTATION ABSTRACT María Vania V. Díaz Romero Paz Title: La Revolución de 1952 en la Novela Boliviana Contemporánea Escrita por Mujeres This dissertation studies the different discourses of nation that underlie contemporary novels written by women authors in Bolivia during the period between 1977 and 2007. My primary corpus is comprised of three novels: Gaby Vallejo’s Hijo de opa (1977), Giancarla Zabalaga’s La Flor de "La Candelaria" (1990) and Verónica Ormachea’s Los ingenuos (2007). These novels allude to the Revolution of 1952 at its different stages, either explicitly or implicitly. Written during different time periods, these novels are a product of their respective historical periods and therefore reveal diverse ways of reading the nationalist discourse and the revolution. My objective is to analyze and discuss the concept of nation and how this concept varies among the different novels by focusing on the Revolution of 1952. The Revolution of 1952 is one of the most important moments in the history of Bolivia, when the conditions for socio-political change converge in order to make possible an “imagined community,” of proposing and implementing a nation-building project based on state capitalism. The mestizo is called upon to serve as a vanguard of this revolution. These novels explore how social, economic, and cultural contradictions make the construction of the nation difficult, and transmit a critique of this process of nation-building, and its nationalist discourse. The main purpose of my dissertation is to examine the recurrence of retellings of the revolution from a feminine perspective in which the domestic space is privileged and the house and family work as a metaphor of the country. The three novels I analyze prioritize female protagonists and the female perspective, embracing a feminist critique of the traditionally patriarchal representation of the revolution. Each of them makes the presence of women visible, prioritizes domestic space as a place of enunciation of national imaginaries and portrays the home as a metaphor for the nation. These authors develop their own political agenda in order to become effective political actors, challenge the patriarchal order and claim their space and their right to participate in nation building. This dissertation is written in Spanish.

Ecrivaine bolivienne des années 30 - oubliée jusqu'aux années 90- Hilda Mundy s'est fait connaître notamment à la fin de la guerre du Chaco (1932-1935) et dans l'immédiat après-Guerre comme chroniqueuse humoristique à Oruro, sa ville natale. Ses chroniques sont autant d'exemples d'une écriture des moeurs, critique et satirique de la bonne société de son temps et notamment à l'égard d'une morale hypocrite et bigote. Satire des puissants, les écrits d'Hilda Mundy viseront également les travers et les scandales de la vie politique de l'époque ainsi que la montée du militarisme qui se profilait à la fin de la guerre ; ceci marquera le destin de l'écrivaine sous le signe de la censure. Son seul livre Pirotecnia, ensayo miedoso de literatura ultraista, publié à La Paz en 1936, est la suite de cette écriture des formes brèves, centrée sur la désacralisation des symboles du pouvoir. Les thèmes de la ville moderne, de la technique, du jeu et de l'attaque contre la tradition, présents aussi dans ses écrits parus dans la presse, constituent l'univers avant-Gardiste de Pirotecnia. Mouvement et méfiance sont au coeur de cette littérature moderne qui dit moi. Le moi de l'écriture mundyenne, riche de son hétéronymie, est porteur d'un projet poétique propre à une esthétique des arts scéniques où le masque dont on parle le plus est celui de la parole<br>A Bolivian writer in the thirty's - forgotten until the 90's - Hilda Mundy became known especially at the end of the Chaco War (1932-1935) and in the immediate post-War period as a humouristic columnist in Oruro, the town where she was born. All her columns are instances of a literature of manners, on which she turns a critical and satirical eye. Her remarks on hypocritical and sanctimonious moral standards of her time are particularly scathing. Hilda Mundy's texts satirize the powerful and target the faults and scandals of political life, and the rise of militarism which was looming at the end of the war. This marked the destiny of the writer under the sign of censure. Her only book, Pirotecnia, ensayo miedoso de literatura ultraista, published in La Paz in 1936 remains loyal to this type of writing, favouring short texts and focused on deconsecration of power symbols. The themes of the modern city, of technology, games and gambling and the attack on tradition, which are also present in her press articles, made up the avant-Garde universe of Pirotecnia. Movement and mistrust are at the heart of this modern literature, which is written in the first person. The self of Hilda Mundy's writing is enriched by its heteronymy and continues a poetic project related to an aesthetics of scenic arts, where the most important mask is that of language

Abstract:
Students who participate in study abroad programs have the opportunity to interact with native speakers in a variety of settings. "Composition and Formation of Social Networks during Study Abroad Programs" explores the kinds of social networks that students form while abroad focusing on the areas of host families, church, school, community, and friends from the program. The kind of network that students form is heavily influenced by the nature of their program. Students from the same program often have social networks similar to those of their peers in the same program. Students who went abroad generally made friends in categories that were most accessible to them. Apart from the program structure, individual initiative also plays an important role in the size and composition of a student's social network. Also, students who had more intense friendships were found to be more likely to create second order networks and meet more friends through their established friendships. Children who grow up exposed to two dialects of the same language may become bidialectal giving them an extra set of choices when they speak. The decision of which dialectal features to use is often socially motivated and demonstrates the speaker's perceived identity. In "Bidialectalism and Language Attitudes: A Case Study of a Bolivian-Argentine Family in the United States," two sisters were interviewed regarding their language use and attitudes. One of the sisters felt a strong connection to her Argentine heritage and thus chose to use an accent and words that would identify her as Argentine. The other sister in this study does not feel the need to identify herself as Argentine and prefers to simply fit in. She thus strives to employ a regionally unmarked variety of Spanish when she speaks. Both sisters are able to accommodate their speech to that of their interlocutors, but have preferred dialectal features based on their language attitudes.

To contextualize the literary study of this nation, rich in fantasy literature, understanding its traits in the current literature, we have sought to rescue the history of its first inhabitants, the Kollas, and the cultural reference they inherited and reviewed in the acculturation process between indigenous and Spanish people. This study is based on the contributions of Latin American theorists, such as Antonio Conejo Polar, Nestor Canclini, the Cuban ethnologist Fernando Ortiz, and especially the concept of transculturation of the Uruguayan critic ?ngel Rama. Este estudio se centra en el diario de viaje de Bertram Brice, un inmigrante de origen británico radicado en Valparaíso a fines del siglo XIX. El relato da cuenta, de manera testimonial, de su viaje a la región amazónica de Bolivia en 1909 en busca de su hermano desaparecido, Ernest Brice, quien opta por dejar el comercio y la “civilización” del hombre blanco para vivir como ermitaño entre los indígenas “primitivos”. La primera parte de la tesis corresponde a un estudio teórico sobre los géneros referenciales que persigue determinar qué tipo de diario es el de Bertram Brice. La segunda, se refiere al contexto socio-histórico de la producción del diario en cuestión, abordando los relatos de otros viajeros que exploraron la región del río Beni en la misma época, a la búsqueda del mítico Gran Paitití o Dorado, al tema de la fiebre del caucho y al choque del mundo moderno e industrializado con la vida premoderna de los habitantes de la selva. Por último, se propone una interpretación desde la literatura comparada de las figuras de Bertram Brice y de Ernest Brice, sujeto de la enunciación y sujeto del enunciado, acercando al primero al arquetipo del héroe y al motivo del viaje al averno y, al segundo, al arquetipo del loco.

The New Argentine Film Movement, a loose conglomeration of filmmakers that have altered conceptions of what it means to make national and political cinema in Argentina since the 1990's, has often located itself on the margins in terms of both geography and ideology. It is telling that in the four films analyzed in this study---La Cienaga and La Nina Santa by Lucrecia Martel, and Bolivia and Un Oso Rojo by Adrian Caetano---the downtown Buenos Aires is never shown. While the plaza de mayo and the casa rosada are the political and social centerpieces of Argentina, and the obelisco the prominent symbol of modern progress and nationalism, the structural analyses of these films reveals the formation of new national ideologies surging from the fringes of both the capital and the country. I argue that Martel and Caetano present this 'new' Argentina, imbued not with an uncontested 'European' heritage and stable middle class, but instead with multiple identities and intimately connected to the chaotic overhaul of the 2001 economic crisis which left many searching for new meanings, new jobs, and new residences. Specifically, I consider Bolivian influences in the films---in many ways 'Bolivians,' as discussed by scholars such as Alejandro Grimson and Cristina Garcia Vazquez, has come to designate the 'Other' in Argentine society. I find that both Martel and Caetano consistently investigate the 'Other' in their films, and while 'Bolivia' and 'Bolivians' are specifically referenced and prominent in their first feature-length works, their second films (completed after the crisis) generally take slightly different approaches<br>acase@tulane.edu

abstract: In the last years of the twentieth century, while the narrative of women in other Latin American countries has received critical attention, Bolivian women's narrative has been widely ignored. The fact that the voice of Bolivian women in Latin American feminist discourse is rarely discussed in Latin American criticism is enough to justify the present study. This work focuses on three prominent Bolivian writers: Gaby Vallejos, Giovanna Rivero Santa Cruz, and Erika Bruzonic. The short stories of these three authors are characterized by accentuating certain telluric features revealed in the background of their feminine/feminist narratives. At the same time, based on the American and European feminist literary critique, this work analyzes the feminine/feminist themes mounted in the narrative of these authors. Gaby Vallejos, with a cinematic style, chronicles the life and customs of the "valluno" context, building a mosaic of different voices in dialogue. Her topics revolve around binaries: life-death, and pain and pleasure, voicing condemnation for a patriarchal society. Ericka Bruzonic deals with women and identity, memory and the breaking of lineage as an imposing structure. Her themes are built around the cosmopolitism of "paceña" urban life, and her voice transgresses the binomials established by a patriarchal society. Finally Giovanna Rivero Santa Cruz takes the life and customs of the Santa Cruz and the Guarani culture and her plots weave these elements reaching for myths and taboos, involving the reader into her stories. In this manner, her narrative makes an incursion into the conscious and unconscious realm of the readers questioning their wealth of moral and social values, their notions of heterosexuality, and sexual taboos. The three writers, with different narrative styles yet dialogical, narrate various experiences of women from different regions, social classes, ages, education, and sexual orientations. Our authors give high value to the word and the body embedded in the culture, thereby affirming their woman's voice as Bolivians and their literary presence in the context of Latin American literature.<br>Dissertation/Thesis<br>M.A. Spanish 2013

abstract: The surge of the chola alteña in Bolivia as a woman who, after being historically discriminated, has achieved her empowerment through her practices of resistance and agency is a very particular and new phenomenon hardly studied. The contribution of this research is in principle to describe and discover the complexity of this occurrence, but at the same time to open a field of understanding the works of the chola as a preliminary input for alternative feminisms, in accordance to the particularity of each context. As a result, an eclectic perspective from different non-canonical theories stemming from the Americas has been adopted. For example, intersectionality stemming from various social, cultural, racial, and gender contexts is addressed by Kimberlé Crenshaw, Dora Inés Munévar, Ann Phoenix, Breny Mendoza y Sonia Montecinos. Research from Aníbal Quijano, Walter Mignolo and María Lugones proposes the decolonization of knowledge. From a Bolivian perspective, the proposal of communitarian feminism by Julieta Paredes and the chi’xi approach by Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui. At the same time, the documenting of the chola practices has been obtained from non-conventional digital and oral sources. Thus, this research becomes a referent for future feminist research about the chola, but also for understanding other movements and practices of subaltern and discriminated women in similar or different contexts. The chola is characterized by her peculiar garment which was imposed by the colonizer in the XVIII century, nullifying her indigenous identity. However, this woman has continued to wear it to the present day as much as a tactic of resistance as of empowerment and agency and has transformed it into a current fashion for the valorization of her identity. She is a chi’xi subject who complements or antagonizes opposites without subsuming them.
