Full textThe studies in the area of organizational learning by increment of the tacit knowledge sharing, directed to the nonprofits are scarce, as opposed to what happens in the private and public sector. The growing importance of the third sector and its institutions, in establishing a more just and balanced society, combating asymmetries, justifies the attention of the academic community, with a view to establishing and adopting the best practices aimed at the fulfillment of its missions. The option of a case study of organizations such as Portuguese fire brigades (CBs), unique in their action and identity, accompanies the need increasingly recognized by Portuguese society, in enabling these organizations of different forms of learning that bring a reinforcement of improving their performance. The tragic events that have occurred in recent years in this country, particularly in the case of large fires, have placed CBs at the center of this issue. Thus, focusing on tacit knowledge sharing, as a way to reinforce organizational learning in these organizations in Portugal and taking as a case study the Portuguese volunteer firefighters, we have set as objectives: I) To determine the prevalence of tacit knowledge sharing indicators in Portuguese volunteer firefighters, II) Identify the most relevant factors for this sharing to occur, III) Determine the prevalence of facilitators "intention" and "availability" to this sharing, IV) Identify the main barriers to tacit knowledge sharing, V) Identify the typologies of barriers to tacit knowledge sharing in Portuguese volunteer firefighters, VI) To determine the profiles of volunteer firefighters in Portuguese in the face of tacit knowledge sharing, VII) To determine the influence of lessons learned in tacit knowledge sharing in Portuguese voluntary firefighters, VIII ) Create a diagnostic matrix the analysis of the tacit knowledge sharing in the organizations under study and IX) To elaborate an action matrix with a view to eliminating the most prevalent barriers. A review of the literature on tacit knowledge sharing allowed the identification of indicators, facilitators and barriers to the sharing of this knowledge. It was also possible to establish a set of indicators aimed at understanding the sharing of tacit knowledge through the lessons learned as a result of significant operational events. This was followed by a mixed methodology where data collection was combined through questionnaires and interviews, which allowed for the prevalence of indicators, facilitators, barriers and lessons learned. The treatment of the data allowed to find the answers to the questions of departure and objectives previously stated. It was possible to perceive the main indicators and factors that influence the sharing of tacit knowledge, to identify the prevalence of the facilitators under study, to determine the main barriers to this knowledge sharing and its typologies, to identify and characterize the different groups of firemen in view of the sharing of tacit knowledge, to determine the influence of the lessons learned in the sequence of major operational events, to share this knowledge and, finally, to elaborate a tacit knowledge sharing matrix for this type of organizations and another matrix of action, with a view to eliminating the most prevalent barriers. The study does not end without the limitations of the study being presented first and recommendations made for future research.
