Abstract:
In his recent book The Lockerbie Bombing: The Search for Justice, Kenny MacAskill recounts his decision to release Abdelbaset Al-Megrahi, the only man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing. Eight years have passed since Al-Megrahi's release on compassionate grounds. In the book MacAskill ranges far beyond the events in which he was closely involved, recounting the bombing itself, the subsequent investigation, trial and appeals in an effort to offer a comprehensive account of the Lockerbie bombing. In this article I review the book and return to some of the key issues raised by MacAskill's decision and the broader context in which it was made. I argue that the book sheds little new light on Lockerbie and that it falls short in precisely the areas where MacAskill might have the most insight to offer. It is a rather bloodless and legalistic account that renders the complexities and the shades of grey of international politics in black and white. The case will nevertheless remain fascinating to scholars of intergovernmental relations in the UK, of para-diplomacy, and of international politics.

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of a mathematical modeling (computer simulation) effort that applied frame-based, data processing constructs, originally developed and applied in the context of artificial intelligence, to the decomposition of a complex Air Force bomber mission. The model was written in LISP to facilitate the development of a concurrent processing environment in which to simulate the simultaneous occurrence of multiple external events/crew tasks. The model simulated a four hour segment of a strategic mission scenario. Two distinct crew complements, four-man and two-man, together with their respective levels of aircraft avionics automation, were represented during a proof-of-concept demonstration. The model provided measures of resource (crew and “black box”) utilization, presumed to correlate to “workload,” at different levels of specificity. These measures were used to identify crew task “chokepoints” (large queue sizes, task interrupts) and to evaluate the effects of automation.

Abstract:
In this paper we analysed John Updike’s 22nd novel, Terrorist, to ascertain whether this novel could be viewed as a Bildungsroman. Our investigation is based on theoretical insights that Hegel, Lukács and Bakhtin offered on this literary genre; furthermore, we acknowledged some contemporary theories regarding this issue as well. By analysing characters and relations among them, narrative layers of the text and intertextual dialogue in Updike’s Terrorist, we strove to point out how Updike deconstructs this literary genre by showing a young man, Ahmad, who – under the influence of an imam – considers and plans to become a suicide bomber. Also, we indicated how the author’s approach to this sensitive topic is a nuanced one: the novel is militant only on surface.

Abstract:
- Unfortunately, terrorism is an everyday thing in today's world. There are many reasons for terrorism and they are very complex: psychological, sociological, economic, etc. Man, unfortunately, needs an enemy as well as a friend, an enemy that he needs for the projection and projective identification of his own destructive aggressiveness. All of this is being transferred to small and large groups which form homogeneous assemblages based on religious, tribal, or national types, demonizing opposite groups. Medina defined terrorism as a sudden violent attack that threatens the life and welfare of human beings and aims at the defenseless victim. Basic aims of terrorism are to create panic and constant fear by repeating sudden, unpredictable attacks; often its goal is revenge, which in turn arouses the same desire for revenge in the victim, so that the terrorist himself appears to be the ultimate victim. Aims are also permanent demoralization of the victim and intergenerational transmission of fear, hopelessness, shame and hate. The media, especially television, stimulates destructive aggression in victims by awakening in them the most regressive instincts, which are projected onto the enemy. The media stimulate immature personalities to identify with terrorist - heroes. There is no psychology that is peculiar to suicide bombers: the most common terrorists of today. The first suicide bombers were Palestinians recruited from poor and traumatized families, educated in isolated camps. They were promised they would go to heaven, where they would enjoy food, drink and virgins. The terrorists who struck the Twin Towers in New York were educated, fanatically religious family people. The main question is whether we can defend ourselves from terrorism, and what future prospects await us. It is difficult to believe that terrorism will be eliminated in the near future, because there are a number of reasons for its existence.Key words: great enemy group, destructive aggression, group regression, Islamic fanaticism, suicide bomber (sciahid), intergenerational transmission of traumas.Parole chiave: grande gruppo nemico, aggressione distruttiva, regressione del gruppo, fanatismo islamico, dinamitardo suicida (sciahid), trasmissione transgenerazionale del trauma.

Abstract:
This article explain about terrorist’s bombing toward a Roman Catholic cathedral in Jolo, southern Philippines, Sunday 27 January 2019 morning. At least 22 people were reportedly killed tragically and nearly 50 others were injured. The suicide bombing of the husband and wife exploded during Sunday Mass in Jolo is the first bomb explosion was carried out by a woman from inside the church who smashed benches, smashed windows and left the body of the victim at the Catholic church located in Jolo. The first explosion occurred at Jolo Cathedral in Sulu Province. The second bomb exploded outside the church after the congregation left to save themselves. The second bomb was carried out by a man who was the husband of the first bomber. This Jolo suicide bombing mimics the suicide bombing of a family of 8-9 May 2018 in Surabaya and Sidoarjo. Nobody thought that the perpetrators came from one whole family. Officers revealed that the bombers in the three churches were the families of Mr. Dita Oepriyanto and Mrs. Puji Kuswati. These parents invited their four children to take action in three different churches. Their four children have a very young and young age. Yusuf Fadil's son (18), Firman Halim (16), daughter of Fadhila Sari (12), and Pamela Riskita (9). The familial terroist bombing in Jolo dan Surabaya is a reflection that our world today is 'a world full of the thrill of underground revenge, inexhaustible and never satisfied in an explosion'. The present is a age of anger

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the political weakness of the socialist party in the face of fascism, its compliance and inability to organize a real opposition, left to individual initiative, easy to control and exploit. To this end, we focus on Zaniboni's attack on Mussolini, an isolated and desperate gesture that highlighted the lack of a true opposition policy. The present essay then analyzes both the pacification pact of 1921 signed by fascists and socialists and the genesis of the attack and its organization are analyzed. This attack was the first of four, all in 1926. From the beginning it appeared so anomalous that the international press spoke of a farce; in fact it was soon learned that the security services knew everything, indeed they had partly facilitated it. Mussolini was very skilled in managing the attack, useful both to demonstrate the need for restrictive measures, and to demonstrate the political irrelevance of the opposition, which even reached terrorism: the same night the unitary socialist party and the invisible Masonic Lodges were dissolved. to Mussolini. In the conclusions, thanks to the documents recovered in the state archive, the figure of the bomber is resized: not a man who lives his detention with pride, without the shadow of a doubt or an afterthought, but a man left alone, grateful to the Duce for the financial help given to his daughter, to make her follow her studies. For this reason he said he was ready to “make himself available”.

Abstract:
Among the many weapons currently used by terrorist organizations against public welfare and coalition forces, human-born Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) present a significant threat. Commonly referred to as suicide bombers, these individuals enter crowded public areas in order to detonate their IED, inflicting lethal damage to the surrounding individuals. Constructed of non-standard parts and hidden under layers of clothing, these human-born IEDs go undetected until detonated. Currently, there are no detection systems that can identify suicide bombers at adequate standoff distances. The authors developed models and a methodology that examine current technologies to increase the probability of identifying a suicide bomber at a checkpoint or marketplace with an adequate standoff distance. The proposed methodology employs sensor technology incorporating unique detection threshold values. The authors analyze our proposed methodology utilizing a simulation model that provides both the probability of detecting a bomber and the probability of a false detection. These simulations will allow us to determine the threshold values for each sensor that result in the best probability of detection of a suicide bomber and allows for a small probability of false detections. Using experimentally “good” threshold values, the authors were able to drastically increase the probability of detection with a combination of radar and thermal imagery. In this paper, the main sensor is the hand-held radar.

Abstract:
In this paper, the author examine the topic of suicide terrorists as the most radical form of terrorism. On the example of suicide bombers, the reasons for resorting to terrorism were explained, as well as the most optimal ways of eliminating or at least reducing this threat. The analyses often state that the main motives of suicide bombers are rewards in heaven or economic benefit or family’s persuasion, but we believe that this explanation is too simplistic. I will prove that the main motive is the lack of sense of purpose in life, dehumanization of man, human activities, and different cultures.

In the artificial lift method by Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP), the energy is transmitted for the well?s deep through a flat electric handle, where it is converted into mechanical energy through an engine of sub-surface, which is connected to a centrifugal pump. This transmits energy to the fluid under the pressure form, bringing it to the surface In this method the subsurface equipment is basically divided into: pump, seal and motor. The main function of the seal is the protect the motor, avoiding the motor?s oil be contaminated by oil production and the consequent burning of it. Over time, the seal will be wearing and initiates a contamination of motor oil, causing it to lose its insulating characteristics. This work presents a design of a magnetic sensor capable of detecting contamination of insulating oil used in the artificial lift method of oil-type Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP). The objective of this sensor is to generate alarm signal just the moment when the contamination in the isolated oil is present, enabling the implementation of a predictive maintenance. The prototype was designed to work in harsh conditions to reach a depth of 2000m and temperatures up to 150?C. It was used a simulator software to defined the mechanical and electromagnetic variables. Results of field experiments were performed to validate the prototype. The final results performed in an ESP system with a 62HP motor showed a good reliability and fast response of the prototype.

Abstract:
The growing number of terrorist attacks in the past decade has focused the public’s attention on the severity of such a man–made hazard. The rising threat of improvised explosive devices — one of the most successful attack strategies — has significantly increased the number of threats on the ground, in the form of suicide–bombs, vehicle–bombs, etc., thereby requiring the development of more effective blast risk mitigation measures. However, the modern proliferation of such measures poses the problem of evaluating their cost–effectiveness, which prompts the need for a comprehensive optimization methodology — capable of maximizing the resilience of the built environment. The aim of this paper is to lay out the foundations of a resilience–based framework for quantifying the performance of different infrastructure elements incurring blast threats, by means of functionality and resilience indicators. The proposed framework can quantify the consequences of multiple outdoor explosions typified by the emblematic car–bomb scenario. The level of localized damage is evaluated via pressure–impulse diagrams; local failures are then aggregated into the definition of resilience and functionality indicators, designed to provide the analyst with a comprehensive picture of global damage, residual functionality, and downtime of the structural system.

Abstract:
The city of Mumbai (Bombay), India is facing a solid waste management crisis. The infrastructure has been unable to keep pace with economic development and population growth, resulting in insufficient collection of municipal solid waste (MSW) and over-burdened dumps. Improper disposal of solid wastes over several decades and open burning of garbage have led to serious environmental pollution and health problems. This study examined the solid waste management process in Mumbai and the potential for implementation of waste-to-energy facilities. Mumbai’s average per capita waste generation rate is 0.18 tonnes per person. Although the reported collection efficiency of MSW is 90%, almost half of the city’s 12 million people live in slums, some of which do not have access to solid waste services. The most pressing problem is the acute shortage of space for landfilling. When the present waste dumps were constructed they were at the outskirts of the city, but now they are surrounded by housing colonies, thus exposing millions of people to daily inconveniences such as odors, traffic congestion, and to more serious problems associated with air, land, and water pollution and the spread of diseases from rodents and mosquitoes. Mumbai is the financial center of India and has the highest potential for energy generation from the controlled combustion of solid wastes. The lower heating value of MSW is estimated in this study to be 9 MJ/kg, which is slightly lower than the average MSW combusted in the E.U. (10 MJ/kg). The land for the first WTE in Mumbai would be provided by the City and there is a market for the electricity generated by the WTE facility. The main problem to overcome is the source of capital since the present “tipping fees” are very low and inadequate to make the operation profitable and thus attract private investors. Therefore, the only hope is for the local government and one or more philanthropists in Mumbai to team up in financing the first WTE in India as a beacon that improves living conditions in Mumbai, reduces the City’s dependence on the import of fossil fuels, and lights the way for other cities in India to follow.

Abstract:
Research investigating direct injection natural gas (DING) diesel engines shows many attractions in engine performance including higher thermal efficiency and higher power output as well as significant improvement of exhaust emissions. However, ignition of injected natural gas is difficult and requires some form of ignition assist, such as a diesel pilot or a glow plug. This paper introduces the experimental apparatus used for compression ignition engine studies in the Engine Research and Development Laboratory (ERDL) at University of Toronto. The apparatus consists of an optically accessible constant volume combustion bomb coupled to a single-cylinder Cooperative Fuel Research (CFR) engine through its spark plug port. The engine provides rapid compression to create realistic engine conditions in the combustion bomb and also scavenges the combustion products. During the engine compression process, the piston pushes the air from the engine cylinder to the constant volume combustion bomb, generating high-pressure, high-temperature initial conditions and a strong swirling air flow in the constant volume combustion bomb. Experiments were conducted to measure temperatures and pressures in the constant volume combustion bomb for a range of initial conditions. The experiments were complemented by numerically modeling the whole domain of the CFR engine cylinder, the constant volume combustion bomb, and the port connecting them using a modified KIVA-3V code. The code computes spatially and temporally resolved pressure, temperature and swirl intensity in the constant volume combustion bomb during the compression process. The experimental and the numerical results are in satisfactory agreement and provide validation of the initial conditions in the constant volume combustion bomb for subsequent studies of injection and ignition.

Abstract:
During the process of beam extraction in positive ion source under high voltage region, a large number of electrons are produced in the gaps of grids. After back-streaming acceleration, these electrons go back to arc chamber or impinge grids and heat electron dump or grids, which are harmful for the safety of ion source. Under the situation of poor beam extraction optics, a large part of the primary beam ions bombard the surface of suppressor grid. And this process produces a large number of electrons. Due to the huge extracted voltage, the secondary electron emission coefficient of the suppressor grid surface is also great, when beam ions bombard on it. As a result, the grids’ current grows. The curvature of ion emission surface and equipotential surface nearby are mainly connected to the perveance and plasma grid geometry. In order to optimize the beam performance of high current ion source and increase the mean arc efficiency, the plasma grid of accelerator is already replaced from circular cross section grid to diamond cross section grid. As a result, the shape of ion emission surface is only connected to the perveance. According the measurement of the current of suppressor grid and the calculation of the perveance of the corresponding shoot, we can analyze the effect of beam divergence angle on back-streaming electron. When the beam divergence angle increases, the number of back-streaming electrons increases rapidly, and grids current changes significantly, especially the current of gradient grid and suppressor grid. The results can guide the parameters operating on the ion source for EAST-NBI and find the reasonable operation interval of perveance and the best one to ensure the safety and stable running of the ion source, which has great significance on the development of long pulse, high power ion source.

Abstract:
Automatic event location extraction from text plays a crucial role in many applications such as infectious disease surveillance and natural disaster monitoring. The fundamental limitation of previous work such as SpaceEval is the limited scope of extraction, targeting only at locations that are explicitly stated in a syntactic structure. This leads to missing a lot of implicit information inferable from context in a document, which amounts to nearly 40% of the entire location information. To overcome this limitation for the first time, we present a system that infers the implicit event locations from a given document. Our system exploits distributional semantics, based on the hypothesis that if two events are described by similar expressions, it is likely that they occur in the same location. For example, if “A bomb exploded causing 30 victims” and “many people died from terrorist attack in Boston” are reported in the same document, it is highly likely that the bomb exploded in Boston. Our system shows good performance of a 0.58 F1-score, where state-of-the-art classifiers for intra-sentential spatiotemporal relations achieve around 0.60 F1-scores.

Abstract:
For particular applications, like large fans for thermal energy facilities making energy from waste, very special designs are needed for the impeller and the volute in order to accomplish with the plant fan specifications. The diameter of these impellers is 2,2 m and the operating temperature with the waste bio gas ranges between 20°C and 700 °C. Waste power plants enable recovery of valuable materials from the waste and generate over one megawatt of energy from a typical ton of residual household or commercial waste. The system is based on gasification and pyrolysis to convert organic waste content into a synthetic gas, similar to natural gas. Since the bio gas might still have some waste particles the impeller blades are straight, with inlet and outlet angles of 90° in order to reduce abrasion. Another reason for the straight blades is the reduced blade material resistance due to the high temperatures. For that reason the design space of these impellers is restricted to the outer dimensions, hub and shroud shapes, number and size of the blades and eventually to splitter blades. Therefore the proper design of the spiral casing is of great importance in order to achieve the operating point at a high efficiency. Spiral casings for centrifugal fans and blowers are widely used in industry. Classical fan and blower basic spiral casing design is based on a free vortex flow pattern and the assumption of a circumferentially uniform flow at the operating point where the flow rate through the impeller is equal to the flow rate through the spiral casing, e.g. Eck [1]. The shape of the spiral casing might have round, rectangular or more complex cross section shapes. In many cases, however, the manufacturing process plays an important role in the design process of the spiral casings. Especially spiral casings for larger fans are made of bended metal sheets with parallel upper and lower surfaces in order to assure a relative simple way of production. In Germany the method of Bommes [2] is well-known for delivering fans with spiral casings of high efficiency. Therefore these spiral casings are also known for their ease of manufacturing, since the logarithmic spiral form is approximated by four circle segments of 90° each. In order to deliver best efficiencies the ratio of the width of the Bommes spiral casing B and the impeller width at the exit b2, i.e. B/b2 has to lie between 2 and 3. In the recent literature Qiang et al. [3] the influence of various volute designs on volute overall performance is analyzed with CFD. In Baloni et. al [4] the performance of centrifugal blower is enhanced with an optimization process on the blower volute using Taguchi method. However in these and other recent publications no special matching of the volute to the respective impeller is done. In the present work the Bommes [2] spiral casing method is modified and adapted to the respective impellers. In such a way a completely new class of spiral casings was designed. For that purpose 44 different fan, i.e. impeller – spiral casing designs where done. For this purpose a parametric model was implemented in the ANSYS Workbench running ANSYS CFX. The design of the models to be simulated in the Workbench was done based on extended analytical combined impeller – volute design considerations, Epple et. al. [5,6]. It is shown, that the optimum for several designs not always is close to the value of B/b2 recommended by Bommes [2], which lies between 2 and 3. Furthermore it is also shown that for two different impellers, one delivering higher pressure characteristic then the other one, when running in the very same spiral casing this situation can even reverse. It is shown, that spiral casing and impeller cannot be deigned separately. In order to achieve best efficiencies considering all the design constrains the spiral casing has to be matched to the impeller design.

Abstract:
Experimental studies of laminar ethanol - air gaseous flames have been undertaken in a large (34 l) cylindrical constant volume combustion bomb to investigate combustion fundamentals at varying ambient conditions. This vessel has been designed to minimise the influence of boundary walls, hence extending the quasi steady pressure region over which meaningful data may be obtained. Gaseous homogeneous mixtures are achieved by injecting liquid ethanol into the bomb which pre-vaporises prior to ignition. Initial pressure and equivalence ratio are predetermined using partial pressure methodology. Flame propagation is recorded utilising high-speed Schlieren photography, and low ignition energies were achieved via a variable discharge system enabling the sensitive early stages of flame propagation and extinction limits to be studied. Data is presented in terms of flame speed against stretch rate from which Markstein lengths and laminar burning velocities are derived for a variety of different initial conditions. The effect of ignition energy, initial pressure (from sub-atmospheric to elevated pressure) along with the effect of increasing initial temperature is studied. Results are discussed in terms of those of previous workers, and compared with predictions from detailed chemical kinetic schemes. Nonlinear trends witnessed during early stage flame propagation are further investigated as a suitable method for deriving extinction stretch rate.
