Algae provide an important role in aquatic food web and biochemical cycles in aquatic systems. They are affected by different environmental factors, such as pH, light, temperature and nutrients. This study aimed to describe the composition abundance and density of phytoplankton in the Hoa Binh reservoir during period from March to December 2011. Phytoplankton samples were collected monthly at four sampling stations. Result obtained showed that 6 phytoplankton classes were recorded: Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Euglenophyceae, Dinophyceae and Cryptophyceae. Bacillariophyceae and Cyanobacteria were the most abundant phytoplankton families constituting 61% and 32% respectively of total phytoplankton community. Colony-forming and solitary filamentous-forming of Cyanobacteria group (e.g. Microcystis aeruginosa, M. wesenbergi and Oscillatoria sp. respectively) were a common component of phytoplankton community in the early summer and autumn periods (April and September). The total cell densities of phytoplankton varied seasonally from 84210 to 100x106 cell/L. Phytoplankton density varied with season with high values in early summer and winter (April and December) and low values in summer – autumn periods (from June to October)

Abstract:
Operation Rolling Thunder was a United States led operation, with the political aims of interdicting and preventing the North Vietnamese support of the South Vietnam rebellion, during the later stage of the Vietnam war. Despite being a superpower, Operation Rolling Thunder failed, and the USA lost the war. In this essay, the air power theorists John A. Warden and Robert A. Pape, and their theories regarding how air power should be used to reach success, are used to analyze this failure. The use of these theories in a parallel manner enables to comprehend empirical sources and in turn recognize anomalies in the decision making and missteps of the American leadership. By keeping the case of Rolling Thunder in focus and thereby try and understand what happened, the aim is to create an understanding for why the potent power of the US Air Force made an inadvertent turn despite exercising air superiority throughout most of the operation. This examination concludes that there were three deciding factors in the American failure, which are: (i) absence of efficient attacks against the North Vietnamese leadership, (ii) lack of correlation between strategy and political aim, (iii) lack of experience and communication within the American leadership.

Abstract:
From 1965-1968, the United States Army bore the brunt of President Lyndon B. Johnsonâs military escalation of the Vietnam War, while attempting to maintain its Cold War deterrent responsibilities around the globe. While scholars have exhaustively researched the varying aspects of the former, fewer have studied the implications of these decisions on the latter. This paper examines the devastating effects of escalation in Southeast Asia on the armyâs ability to remain prepared and ready to fight another war should one arise anywhere else in the world. Specifically, it traces the downward trend of army readiness as a result of Johnsonâs decision not to call up the reserves until 1968, paired with the rapid expansion of the army from 1 million soldiers in 1965 to 1.5 million in 1968.

Abstract:
History
Ph.D.
This dissertation examines the early U.S.-D.R.V. relationship by analyzing related myths and exploring Viet Minh policies. I go beyond the previous literature to examine the Viet Minh government's modernization and anti-imperialist projects, both of which proved critical to D.R.V. policy evolution and the evolution of a new national identity. During the French era, as Vietnamese thinkers rethought the meaning of "being Vietnamese," groups like the Viet Minh determined that modernization was the essential to Vietnam's independence and that imperialist states like the U.S. posed a serious threat to their revolution and their independence. I argue that D.R.V. officials dismissed all possibility of a real alliance with the U.S. long before 1950. Soviet and Chinese mentors later provided development aid to Hanoi, while the D.R.V. maintained its autonomy and avoided becoming a client state by seeking alliances with other decolonizing countries. In doing so, Vietnamese leaders gained their own chances to mentor others and improve their status on the world stage. After Geneva, Hanoi continued to advance modernization in the North using a variety of methods, but its officials also heightened their complaints against the U.S. In particular, the D.R.V. denounced America's invasion of South Vietnam and its "puppet" government in Saigon as evidence of an imperialist plot. In advocating an anti-imperialist line and modernized future, D.R.V. leaders elaborated a new national identity, tying modernization and anti-imperialism inextricably to "being Vietnamese." Yet modernization presented serious challenges and Hanoi's faith in anti-imperialism had its drawbacks, limiting their ability to critique and evaluate the U.S. threat fully.

Abstract:
Stress and intonation play important roles in the production and perception of the English language. They are always very difficult for second language learners to acquire. Yet, a review of literature reveals that these important suprasegmental features have not received due attention from second language researchers or teachers. In Vietnam in particular, there is no research to date which studies the stress and intonation errors in the performance of Vietnamese learners of English. This study uses the procedures of Error Analysis to investigate the problem. Chapter one and two give a review of relevant literature and a description of the methodology of the study. In chapter three, the students' stress and intonation errors are described and classified, and the possible sources of those errors are discussed. Finally, chapter four shows implications and makes suggestions for the improvement of teaching and learning English stress and intonation.

Abstract:
Tidal flat is a special environment suffering tidal regime in which tidal flats are submerged during flood tide and exposing the air during ebb tide. Tidal flats in the north coast in Vietnam are constituted in diurnal tide condition with tide range varying from 0.3m to 3.5m. Along 350km coastline of the study area, the diversity of constituent conditions formed various tidal flats with different characteristic. Tidal flats in the southern part of the study area are fed by sediment from two large river systems, in the middle part forms the coal tidal flats, but the only sandy sediment along with tide domination constitute the large tidal flats in the north coast of the study area. This study apply remote sensing techniques and GIS tools to solve four scientific issues including: the evolution of tidal flats over periods from 1989 to 2014, the characteristics of sediments in tidal flats, the surface parameter of tidal flats, and the forcing factors which influence the future change of tidal flats. The results of the study shows that, tidal flats in the north coast in the study area are dramatically eroded but the tidal flats in the south coast are deposition by the concentration of fine sediments. In total 14 forcing factors, the coastal nature factor has highest forcing to the deposition of tidal flats. However, the factors of wind-wave effect and tidal flat width have negative influence to deposition. Consequently, the highest potential for future deposition of tidal flats are around the river mouths in the south coast but no potential for future deposition is in tidal flats in the north of the study area. This study is implemented in the framework of the cooperation between University of Science and Technology Ha Noi (USTH) and Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne (URCA)

North Texas State University and the surrounding Denton community enjoyed a quiet college atmosphere throughout most of the 1960s. With the retirement of President J. C. Matthews in 1968, however, North Texas began witnessing the issues most commonly associated with the turbulent decade, such as the struggle for civil rights, the anti-Vietnam War movement, the fight for student rights on campus, and the emergence of the Counterculture. Over the last two years of the decade, North Texas State University and the surrounding community dealt directly with the 1960s and, under the astute leadership of President John J. Le, Hai Van. "The Vietnam War and the laws of war : an examination of North Vietnam's military strategy and its compliance with the laws of war." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2011. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/4050/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis focuses on the Vietnamese side of the Vietnam War. Though this war is one of the wars best documented, literature about the Vietnamese side is much less in comparison with that about the American side. In the war, inherited from the long history of national defence and influenced by Marxism-Leninism on war and army, North Vietnam applied the Vietnamese strategy of people's war.calling all Vietnamese people to participate in national effort to fight against American aggression. The North Vietnam's military strategy was not consistent with the basic principles of the laws of war as it did not distinguish combatants from non-combatants. This strategy put civilian population at risk. However, the thesis demonstrates through original archive and interview based research how the People's Army of Vietnam (PA VN) was not unrestrained. It had its own rules of engagement in fighting as well as in everyday contact with civilian, in order to minimize civilian casualties and protect civilian lives and assets. Also, PAVN paid great attention to winning and maintaining support of civilian as this support was crucial for its own existence as well as its war fighting capability. One implication of studying the North Vietnam's way of war is that North Vietnam's war against America was not immoral. It also has implications on the debate about the morality of American war in Vietnam and reflection to the American's current counterinsurgency doctrine - the Petraeus Doctrine.

Garrett, Dave L. "The Power of One: Bonnie Singleton and American Prisoners of War in Vietnam." Thesis, University of North Texas, 1999. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc279240/.

Abstract:
Bonnie Singleton, wife of United States Air Force helicopter rescue pilot Jerry Singleton, saw her world turned upside down when her husband was shot down while making a rescue in North Vietnam in 1965. At first, the United States government advised her to say very little publicly concerning her husband, and she complied. After the capture of the American spy ship, the U.S.S. Pueblo by North Korea, and the apparent success in freeing the naval prisoners when Mrs. Rose Bucher, the ship captain's wife, spoke out, Mrs. Singleton changed her opinion and embarked upon a campaign to raise public awareness about American prisoners of war held by the Communist forces in Southeast Asia. Mrs. Singleton, along with other Dallas-area family members, formed local grass-roots organizations to notify people around the world about the plight of American POWs. They enlisted the aid of influential congressmen, such as Olin "Tiger" Teague of College Station, Texas; President Richard M. Nixon and his administration; millionaire Dallas businessman Ross Perot; WFAA television in Dallas; and other news media outlets worldwide. In time, Bonnie Singleton, other family members, and the focus groups they helped start encouraged North Vietnam to release the names of prisoners, allow mail and packages to be sent to the POWs, and afford better treatment for prisoners of war.

Abstract:
The air campaign conducted by the RAAF in the North-Western Area during the Second World War has been largely ignored by historians yet it contributed significantly to the outcome of the Pacific war. This thesis sets out to discuss the campaign by considering various factors that impacted on the RAAF in the lead up to and during the course of the Pacific war and their relevance to the campaign. It looks at the way air operations were conducted in the North-Western Area between 1942 and 1945 and describes the role played by the flying squadrons based in the area. Using primary sources such as operational record books, documents and files at archives and libraries and interviews with veterans and experts the thesis found that the campaign was conducted in several phases. It started with the defence of Darwin. In keeping with overall allied strategy the RAAF then went on an offensive into what was then the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) using medium and heavy bombers and mine laying sea planes flying from bases in Australia???s north west. The NEI was vital to the Japanese war effort as a source of essential raw materials such as oil, timber, and rubber. To defend this part of their new empire the Japanese had amassed large military garrisons on the islands. The vessels used to transport troops and materials became the most important targets for the RAAF???s bomber squadrons. As General MacArthur???s forces advanced along the north coast of New Guinea the North-Western Area based units conducted raids into the NEI to deceive the Japanese into thinking an invasion would be launched from Darwin. As the New Guinea campaign gained momentum the RAAF???s task was to protect its western flank, to prevent the Japanese from moving troops and aircraft east to the Philippines. The thesis concludes the campaign was successful because Darwin was defended, it denied the Japanese vital materials for the conduct of the war and it kept hundreds of aircraft and tens of thousands of troops away from the allied advance.

Abstract:
The struggle between the President and the Congress over the power to control the use of military force is an enduring dimension of U.S. foreign policy. In the 20th century Arthur Schlesinger labeled the growth of Presidential war power the “Imperial Presidency.” While some scholars have attempted to explain the expansion of Presidential power based on the Cold War or nuclear weapons, there has been little work studying the link between America’s ascending role in international legal frameworks and this domestic legal transformation. In this dissertation, I argue that America’s participation in international legal frameworks, such as the United Nations and NATO, has been a central factor in enabling the growth of Presidential war power. These international frameworks allow the President to circumvent Congress and to assert that the use of military force was something other than a ‘war’ that would need Congressional authorization. In case studies of pre-WWII aid to Great Britain, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Gulf War, I demonstrate how the rise of executive war power relied on America’s growing participation in international legal frameworks. The dissertation contributes to the nexus of International Relations and Constitutional scholarship. It offers a unique interpretation of Presidential war power while also offering new insights on the nature of the United States’ relationship with international legal frameworks. I argue that participation in international legal frameworks has been ‘democracy-undermining’ as the President utilizes those frameworks to circumvent the Constitution’s restrictions on Presidential war power.

The aim of this study is to find the solutions of quality improvement for selected leading universites in the North of Vietnam. A survey was conducted in early 2015. The author collected hundred more data from the respondents who are major stakeholders of education in the five departments from the selected five universities in the North of Vietnam, which train one same major that is Business administration or Management. The respondents who have the experience in education are mainly students and teachers. Besides, the author also collected data from parents, staffs, government officer, industrial experts, etc. This study used Likert scale of five. The results finally served the purpose of this research. I found that nine supported hypotheses, the rest were rejected. From the results of hypotheses, the author found the relationships among variables. Based on that point of view, the author proposed general recommendations for university and leaders and the suggestion for each stakeholder in education. In terms of important findings, finding dimensions and analyzing their relationships contribute to the evaluation of educational quality in Northen Vietnam.

Chanay-Savoyen, Frederic. "Business negotiation in Vietnam : relationship development between North American and Vietnamese negotiators." Thesis, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/4359.

Abstract:
This thesis studies some of the major factors affecting relationship development between Vietnamese and North American business people, including: the different status of foreigners, the economic needs of the Vietnamese, the unsettled environment, the different conception of working relationships and the importance of face. The focus of the empirical research is the relationship development between Vietnamese and North American negotiators. A review of the Vietnamese culture and the pertinent literature led to the formulation and thesis of three hypotheses with respect to: the most important issue for the Vietnamese negotiator, the type of relationship wanted by the Vietnamese negotiator, and the impact of status differential on the relationship. Two principal research methods were used to test these hypotheses. First, a questionnaire was distributed to business people attending business classes at the University of Economics of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Second, a series of interviews was conducted with Vietnamese and North American business people living and working in Vietnam. The findings confirm that the Vietnamese emphasize the development of good working relationships with their negotiating counterparts. It should be noted, however, that the concept of a good working relationship is conceived differently than in North America. The second hypothesis is partially supported by the data; the Vietnamese negotiators seem to attach more importance to the evaluation of the trust of their partners, rather than to competitive or cooperative objectives. This is because the Vietnamese negotiators want to make sure they will not be in a situation in which they might lose face. This appears to be the main relationship objective of the Vietnamese negotiators. No conclusive evidence has been found to endorse the third hypothesis. Although status differential affects the behavior of Vietnamese negotiators, it does not affect the way they develop relationships with their North American partners. Possibly, the special status of North American business people, and the similar basis of all business interactions, have led the Vietnamese to have specific relationship objectives when negotiating with North Americans, whatever their status might be.

Dengue is considered as an endemic disease in Vietnam with outbreaks occurring every year. To investigate dengue infection in the North and Central parts of Vietnam, we conducted a molecular epidemiological study. A total of 274 human serum samples were collected and diagnosed by real-time RT-PCR, virus isolation, and E/M-specific capture IgM and IgG ELISA. A total of 26 confirmed cases were identified (2 DENV-1, 6 DENV-2, 15 DENV-3, and 3 DENV-4 cases). Phylogenetic analyses of the DENV envelope gene sequences of 15 Vietnamese isolates demonstrated that they were one Asian genotype 1 DENV-2 strain, 8 genotype II DENV-3 strains, 3 genotype III DENV-3 strains, and 3 genotype I DENV-4 strains. Combined analyses of Vietnamese strains and imported Vietnamese strains in Taiwan indicate that almost all imported Vietnamese strains in Taiwan can be grouped together with the Vietnamese strains. Interestingly, one DENV-4 strain is close to a Thai strain.

MacArthur, Julie Leigh. "Controlling the uncontrollable? : economic transition and elite power in North Korea and Vietnam." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/17549.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis comparatively examines the challenges of economic reform facing the North Korean elite. Is the North Korean regime willing to open the Pandora's box of economic reform? If so what does this mean for the country- both for Korean Worker's Party elites and the nation's impoverished population? It is argued here that realists skeptical of economic reform do not account for the positive incentives facing elites, such as privileged access to new economic assets. Within transitions theory, both Walder (2004) and Hellman (1998) have illustrated that communist elites can benefit, rather than lose, from gradualist economic reforms. This argument supports policies of engaging North Korea economically, and encouraging a gradual, elite-led, transition for the country. The logic of linking economic policy to security is based in liberal institutionalist theory of Keohane and Nye (2001). This emphasizes the power of socialization and interdependence to cause transformation, rather than military conflict or containment. Through analysis of Vietnamese and North Korean political economy, this comparative study makes the case that the elite-led path is possible in North Korea. However, the political will of elites to deepen reform is dependent on outside incentives, as well as the policy choices of its neighbours in Northeast Asia, and the United States. Consequently, facilitation of this process by policymakers in international financial institutions and their constituent donor countries is a key element in paving a path to peace for the DPRK.

Tran, Van Hiep. "Key factors affecting small bamboo enterprises upgrading in North Vietnam: Case studies from Chuong My, Hanoi and Thanh Hoa province." 2002. https://tud.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A75446.

Full text
Abstract:
The bamboo sector significantly contributes to environmental protection, employment opportunities, and poverty reduction in rural and mountainous areas. This assertion holds true for Vietnam. Bamboo processing enterprises play increasingly important roles in value chain upgrading, despite growing overexploitation and mismanagement. This significantly affects small bamboo enterprises (SBEs) upgrading. In effect, SBEs are constrained by several factors, including the application of outdated technology, the lack of product innovation, limited capital, unstable labour resources, and poor market access. In addition, these enterprises do not only face stiff competition from large scales enterprise, but they are also confronted with international competitors (e.g. bamboo and rattan manufacturers from China). As current policies are yet to address these issues, SBEs remain exposed to shocks that may cause them to disappear. The consequences may include rising unemployment and poverty levels within rural communities in Vietnam. In the face of multi-faceted structural deterrents to the survival of SBEs, a few SBEs in the study region have grown successfully, and have established themselves in international markets over the last years. The conditions under which such SBEs thrived remain relatively less understood. Furthermore, a comprehensive analysis of the key determining factors for the upgrading of SBEs is lacking. To address this gap, this thesis presents evidence of both successful and unsuccessful cases of SBEs upgrading in Vietnam.

Over the past half-century, the automotive industry has experienced expansion and diversification, has become an important part of our lives and provides personal mobility with speed, comfort, and convenience. In many countries, the automotive industry is recognized to have a positive effect on the long-run economic increasing growth. Nowadays, in order to achieve sustainable competitive advantages in the market, it is necessary to provide and improve customer satisfaction, which is one of the most important factors in business, especially in marketing. Besides, customer satisfaction is also a determining factor of customer switching behavior. Moreover, both of customer satisfaction and customer switching intention directly influence on customer repurchase intention, which decides the success of a company. Therefore, this study aims to find out the effects of service quality and self-congruity on customer satisfaction, which, thereafter, affects customer’s switching intention and repurchase intention of the customer in Vietnam’s automotive industry. Furthermore, this research has a further discussion of the relationships among customer relationship management (CRM) and switching costs, and switching intention. Along with that, this research also goes to ascertain the combination effect of switching intention and customer satisfaction on repurchase intention. As a result, a research model was developed based on this multidimensional approach. Quota sampling method was used to collect quantitative data from 400 car owners in Hanoi City and Vinh Phuc Province. However, after deleting some invalid records, only 366 questionnaires are valid. The proposed model and hypotheses were verified by using the structural equation modeling (SEM). There were two steps procedures of structural equation model. The first step is a measurement model test and the second one is the structural model test. This analysis also extends to include the different traits of demographic variables by using t-test and ANOVA test. The main findings are as follows: (1) service quality and self-congruity have positive influence on customer satisfaction; (2) customer relationship management has not any influence on switching intention; (3) switching costs has negative impact on switching intention; (4) customer satisfaction positively influences on repurchase intention; (5) customer satisfaction and switching cost have negative influence on switching intention; (6) switching intention has negative effect on repurchase intention; (7) The result of variance analysis indicates that demographic variables have different traits in effecting the extent of predicting variables to help the managers of car brands can get more information to control customer satisfaction and customer behavioral. Eastman, Susan L. "Beyond the Battlefield: Direct and Prosthetic Memory of the American War in Viet Nam." 2010. http://trace.tennessee.edu/utk_graddiss/792.

Full text
Abstract:
“Beyond the Battlefield: Direct and Prosthetic Memory of the American War in Viet Nam” examines shifts in American, Viet Namese, and Philippine memorial, literary, and cinematic remembrance of the war through the cultural lenses of later wars: the Gulf War (1990-1991) and the “War on Terror” that began in 2001. As opposed to earlier portrayals of the American War in Viet Nam (1964-1975), turn-to-the-twenty-first-century representations engage in an ever-broadening collected cultural memory—a compilation of multifaceted, sometimes competing, individual and group memories—of the war. “Beyond the Battlefield” begins with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (1982) because it serves as the impetus for active participation in the reception and creation of memory. It traces a multifaceted collected cultural memory pattern through the stages of recognition for servicewomen, American women, Viet Namese Women, and reconciliation between soldiers and civilians as well as between Americans and the Viet Namese—veterans and civilians alike. Ultimately, a collected cultural memory of the war encourages prosthetic memory—memories of the war acquired via mediated representation by those with no direct experience in or hereditary connection to the war. Prosthetic memory permits an ongoing memory of the war that refuses to relegate the war to the forgotten past.
