The non-woven fabric matrix, non-woven fabric/grid matrix, non-woven/water-bone polyurethane (PU), and matrix/grid/water-bone PU, were put to test their tensile stress, tear stress, and stab resistance. An elastic constitutive relation for cancellous bone tissue is developed. This relationship involves the stress tensor T, the strain tensor E and the fabric tensor H for cancellous bone. The fabric tensor is a symmetric second rank tensor that is a quantitative stereological measure of the microstructural arrangement of trabeculae and pores in the cancellous bone tissue. The constitutive relation obtained is part of an algebraic formulation of Wolff’s law of trabecular architecture in remodeling equilibrium. In particular, with the general constitutive relationship between T, H and E, the stat

AbstractIn biomechanics, large finite element models with macroscopic representation of several bones or joints are necessary to analyze implant failure mechanisms. In order to handle large simulation models of human bone, it is crucial to homogenize the trabecular structure regarding the mechanical behavior without losing information about the realistic material properties. Accordingly, morphology and fabric measurements of 60 vertebral cancellous bone samples from three osteoporotic lumbar spines were performed on the basis of X-ray microtomography (μCT) images to determine anisotropic elast

We then formulate the equation for the fast wave in terms of fabric tensor for the calcaneus. Cement penetrability is a key factor in multifilament cement composites. However, the modes of action and the concepts vary because of brittle and ductile fibers. In the case of brittle fibers such as glass, high penetrability of cement products in between the bundle filaments can lead to brittle composite behavior, and therefore addition in ductility is required. In order to have efficient bundle action and high bonding, fillers can be introduced in between the glass filaments, keeping the telescopic mode of failure but at the same time improving the bond and stress transfer within the filame

Obtaining bone mechanical properties from clinical resolution quantitative computed tomography (QCT)-derived localized apparent density presents the most attractive, available tool for developing subject-specific finite element (FE) bone models. While QCT density is a good predictor of the mechanical properties of HVTB [1, 2], knowledge of the fabric tensor (anisotropy ratio) can substantially improve prediction [3] and accuracy of CT-based continuum FE models [4]. Unfortunately, resolution of currently available clinical CT scanners is inadequate for mapping the fabric tensor of HVTB, which i

The present study is a baseline assessment of the environmental durability of current state-of-the-art, fabric-reinforced shape memory materials being considered for morphing applications. Tensile dog-bone-shaped specimens are cut along three different directions, namely, along 0°, perpendicular (90°), and at 45° to the orientation of the fabric. The shape memory properties and elastomeric response before and after relevant environmental exposure to water at 49°C for 4 days, in lube oil at room temperature and at 49°C for 24 hours, and after exposure to Xenon Arc (63°C, 18 minutes water and li

Finite element models of the spine provide a means to assess fracture susceptibility [3] or to evaluate devices [5]. Such models require accurate estimates of the mechanical properties of the trabecular bone within the vertebral body. Properties can be estimated using density measures from quantitative computed tomography [1]. Cellular solid analysis suggest the importance of incorporating microstructure in determining trabecular bone mechanics [4]. But it is difficult to classify the structure of real trabecular bone morphology in terms of the idealized models. Instead, statistical measures o

Abstract Underlying the importance of trabecular architecture on whole bone strength, osteoporosis has recently been defined as “a disease characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to enhanced bone fragility and a consequent increase in fracture risk” [1]. Architectural measures, such as the fabric tensor and connectivity, can explain 20%–30% of the inter-specimen variance in modulus of trabecular bone [2–4]. It has also been observed that apparent density alone does not fully differentiate clinically between atraumatic fracture and non-fractur

Collagen fibers exhibit a high level of structural organization usually consisting of three sub-tissue zones: (i) a superficial tangent zone with fibers which are tangential to the articular surface, (ii) a middle zone with fibers isotropically oriented, (iii) a deep zone with fibers oriented perpendicular to the subchondral bone [1].
