Abstract:
Abstract This paper provides a close reading of Paul Farley’s 160-line poem, “Thorns.” The poem is read in dialogue with William Wordsworth’s celebrated Romantic ballad “The Thorn.” Special attention is given to Farley’s treatment of memory and metaphor: It is shown how the first, exploratory part of the poem elaborates upon the interdependent nature of memory and metaphor, while the second part uses a more regulated form of imagery in its evocation of a generational memory linked to a particular place and time (the working-class Liverpool of the 1960s and 1970s). The tension between the two parts of the poem is reflected in the taut relationship between the poet and a confrontational alter ego. Wordsworth’s importance for Farley is shown to inhere not only in the Lake Poet’s use of personal memory, but also the close connection between his poetry and place, as well as a strongly self-reflective strain that results in an interminable process of self-determination. Farley’s independence as a poet also comes across, though, and is for instance in evidence in his desire to avoid the “booby trap” of too simple appropriation of the methods and motifs of his Romantic predecessor.

Maier, Gunther, and Michaela Trippl. "The Pitfalls and Booby Traps of Cluster Policy." WU Vienna University of Economics and Business, 2012. http://epub.wu.ac.at/3404/1/sre%2Ddisc%2D2012_01.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past two decades, cluster policies have become a standard instrument of public authorities and economic development practitioners in many parts of the world. This paper takes a critical stance on this phenomenon and provides theoretical arguments that challenge the widespread application of cluster initiatives to promote long-term regional development. We distinguish between and compare two main bodies of thought: the neoclassical view and the agglomeration view. We show that there are no rationales for cluster policy from the perspective of neoclassical theory. The agglomeration view, in contrast, provides a convincing conceptual basis for justifying economic policies implemented in form of cluster initiatives. At the same time, however, it points to major problems related with the cluster policy approach. We identify and elaborate on three essential difficulties, i.e. the proper (1) targeting, (2) dosing, and (3) timing of cluster policy actions. We highlight that the problems related with these fundamental issues of each public initiative constitute powerful pitfalls and booby traps of cluster policies. (author's abstract)

Cannon, Ammie. "Controversial Politics, Conservative Genre: Rex Stout's Archie-Wolfe Duo and Detective Fiction's Conventional Form." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2006. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/469.

Full text
Abstract:
Rex Stout maintained his popular readership despite the often controversial and radical political content expressed in his detective fiction. His political ideals often made him many enemies. Stances such as his ardent opposition to censorship, racism, Nazism, Germany, Fascism, Communism, McCarthyism, and the unfettered FBI were potentially offensive to colleagues and readers from various political backgrounds. Yet Stout attempted to present radical messages via the content of his detective fiction with subtlety. As a literary traditionalist, he resisted using his fiction as a platform for an often extreme political agenda. Where political messages are apparent in his work, Stout employs various techniques to mute potentially offensive messages. First, his hugely successful bantering Archie Goodwin-Nero Wolfe detective duo—a combination of both the lippy American and the tidy, sanitary British detective schools—fosters exploration, contradiction, and conflict between political viewpoints. Archie often rejects or criticizes Wolfe's extreme political viewpoints. Second, Stout utilizes the contradictions between values that occur when the form of detective fiction counters his radical political messages. This suggests that the form of detective fiction (in this case the conventional patterns and attitudes reinforced by the genre) is as important as the content (in this case the muted political message or the lack of overt politics) in reinforcing or shaping political, economic, moral, and social viewpoints. An analysis of the novels The Black Mountain (1954) and The Doorbell Rang (1965) and the novellas "Not Quite Dead Enough" and "Booby Trap" (1944) from Stout's Nero Wolfe series demonstrates his use of detective fiction for both the expression of political viewpoints and the muting of those political messages.

Abstract:

This essay is written in the course of War science during the author’s studies to become an Officer in the technical corps, in the Swedish armed forces. Due to the descriptive method in Explosive Ordnance Disposal and demining in modern conflict the reader gets an exposé of the basics, history, and present time features for the Swedish EOD- and Demining personnel. The main purpose with this essay is to discuss the problems that Swedish Explosive ordnance clearance (EOC) personnel might encounter in their current daily service. The opportunities for parts of the supporting technical corps and the technical equipment for detecting, locating and classifying mines, Explosive remnants of war (ERW), Improvised explosive device (IED) and booby-traps to be at hand in the process of solving these problems are also discussed. From interviews and literature studies the author conducts predictions of the development in the subject area. The predictions contains amongst others a more understandable supporting technical corps and multi-sensing-platforms for detecting, locating and classifying mines, ERW, IED and booby-traps. Some of the research that the Swedish defence research agency (FOI), the Swedish Defence Material Administration (FMV) and the Swedish EOD- and Demining Centre (SWEDEC) have produced is presented in the essay.

Abstract:
How did the blue-footed booby evolve those lovely blue feet? Genetic analysis shows that the blue-footed booby shared a recent common ancestor with the grey-footed Peruvian booby of coastal South America. Unlike the latter, whose diet includes anchovies and sardines, the blue-footed booby is a sardine specialist that feeds by plunge diving exclusively into cold-water upwellings, like those of the Cromwell current. Sardines normally abound in Galápagos, but not anchovies—the strong currents quickly carry away their young. But sardines are also rich in blue-green coloring agents (carotenes) that show up in the feet of successful booby divers. Hence it’s an uncanny “fit” of the blue-footed booby to island conditions is uncanny: did it evolve in Galápagos from continental ancestors who followed trade winds west? The species also regulates brood sizes in relation to sardine supply via flexible siblicide, which surely helps in coping with ENSO. It shares siblicide with its close Galápagos relative, the Nazca booby, as well as aggressive NAV behavior in which nonparental adult visitors peck at innocent, unrelated chicks until they bleed or drown. New evidence from brown boobies—another close relative—suggests that this behavior evolved as a result of benefits from survival cannibalism during extreme El Niños.

Abstract:
From Basque descent and growing up in the Philippines, Fred Elizalde was an advanced composer and orchestra leader. He had worked in the USA and was familiar with the quality of its dance music and jazz, which he wanted to bring to London and then develop further. He managed to get a contract with the Savoy Hotel, London's top hotel, and in order to fulfil his ambition he hired Americans including Rollini and Bobby Davis. Rollini was featured on most of Elizalde's records, both with the full orchestra and with a jazz band, sometimes using American arrangements. The public's reaction was generally positive, but the band's broadcasts were not always well received. Elizalde defendedhis approach to his management and with initial success. During a short trip home Rollini marries Dixie. His popularity among British music lovers grows further and Melody Maker, a major magazine, asks him to write articles about his music.
