Abstract:
What methods do writers and illustrators use to visually approach the comic book page in an American Superhero form that can be adapted to create a professional and engaging Australian hero comic? The purpose of this research is to adapt the approaches used by prominent and influential writers and artists in the American superhero/action comic-book field to create an engaging Australian hero comic book. Further, the aim of this thesis is to bridge the gap between the lack of academic writing on the professional practice of the Australian comic industry. In order to achieve this, I explored and learned the methods these prominent and professional US writers and artists use. Compared to the American industry, the creating of comic books in Australia has rarely been documented, particularly in a formal capacity or from a contemporary perspective. The process I used was to navigate through the research and studio practice from the perspective of a solo artist with an interest to learn, and to develop into an artist with a firmer understanding of not only the medium being engaged, but the context in which the medium is being created. This means both in the American genre and its adaptation in Australia within the context of the local scene.<br>Thesis (Professional Doctorate)<br>Doctor of Visual Arts (DVA)<br>Queensland College of Art<br>Arts, Education and Law<br>Full Text

Abstract:
This thesis represents the first full-scale, English commentary on the opening book of Lucans epic poem, De Bello Ciuili, in sixty-five years. Its fundamental purpose is to explain the language and content of the Latin text of the book. The subject matter of the thesis beyond the introduction is naturally dependent upon the content of each individual line under consideration, but the following questions may help establish some of the larger issues I have prioritised throughout my response to the Latin text of book one. These questions may be variously relevant to an episode within book one of De Bello Ciuili, or else a sentence, a line, a word, a metrical issue, or a combination of these. How does it help locate the text within the genre of epic? What does it contribute to the overall meaning of the poem? What does it contribute to our understanding of epic narrative technique? What does it contribute to our understanding of Lucans poetic usage and technique? How does it interact with the rest of the poem (i.e. what are the structural or intratextual markers advertised and what do they contribute to the meaning of the passage under consideration or the structure of the book or poem as a whole)? How does it interact with its (especially epic) models (i.e. what intertextual markers are at work and how does the invocation of earlier models affect the meaning of the passage under consideration)? How does it behave in relation to what we know of the norms espoused by Classical literary criticism? What are the programmatic issues, themes, and images explored or established by book one?

Abstract:
The history of the book in the West shows how new technologies and ways of reproduction have changed the book`s structure, and modified its form and relationship with the reader. The supremacy of the codex over the volumen (scroll) and Gutenberg`s movable type (the printing press) are examples of these revolutionary transformations. According to the French historian Roger Chartier, nowadays the electronic text is making the opposition between book and screen disappear, and fostering new writing forms and reading in digital media. Texts become different on the printed page and on the computer screen (as well as in many other electronic gadgets). This represents a book change, which includes, simultaneously, structure, organization, writing manners and appearance. Its further, represents a cultural transformation in the book form, reproduction, distribution and relationship with the reader. A virtual book exists only in cyberspace and in the reader`s mind. In Design, digital technology and hypermedia bring several possibilities and new thoughts about a book`s project. Its pages are converted in hybrid territories, where typography, image, sound and movement involve the reader during the reading action. This means a new concept and the revision of the book`s visual project. This research approaches book design, literature and the narrative forms developed for digital media reading. It deals with form and content, looking for new characteristics of the electronic book as a novelty, and tries to find out which one is surviving this change from print book to screen.

Gowling, Eric. "Aetius of Amida. Libri Medicinales Book 1 : a translation with commentary." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/6174/.

Full text
Abstract:
This work is the first translation into a modern language of book 1 of the Libri Medicinales of Aëtius of Amida, a Byzantine physician who wrote in the middle of the 6th century AD. It comprises a lengthy preface, describing the analysis of pharmacological materials in terms of the science of the time, followed by 418 chapters, listing such materials obtained from plants. Commentary is to be found in the Introduction, as well as a running commentary after each part of the preface and each chapter. As Aëtius’ book 1 is a synopsis of the plants section of Galen’s On the Mixtures and Capacities of Simple Drugs, particular attention is paid to comparison between Aëtius’ work and that of Galen. Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of the ancient drugs in the light of modern scientific knowledge, a relatively neglected area of research, has also been given serious consideration.

Abstract:
Efficiency in the presentation of a Latin text and its study-aids is the key to assisting intermediate students, who frequently become overwhelmed with the amount of vocabulary and grammar that needs to be simultaneously understood in order to read with any accuracy. This text breaks down the first book of Caesar's Bellum Gallicum in both a visual and a conceptual manner to aid students in learning intermediate Latin efficiently. The text is comprised of five parts. The first section contains the text as found in DuPontet's edition of Caesar's Bellum Gallicum. The second section has grammar notes that explain tense and case uses that are necessary for grasping the text, as well as citations for further reading. The third section displayes the text segmented into clauses and is positioned in such a way that the student can, at a glance, visualize what is part of the main clause, and what is subordinate to it. This segmentation assists the reader in learning to follow the order of Caesarian clauses when translating. The fourth section provides a list of vocabulary, not previously memorized by students, that happens to appear in that specific section. The final component is a list of all words that first appear in Book 1 of Caesar's Bellum Gallicum and that appear throughout Caesar's text five or more times.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the theme of time in the book of Qohelet. Throughout his work Qohelet depicts the temporal reality as intensely problematic for human attempts to fashion a meaningful existence, even in the present. A tension is established in the book between the temporal realities of the world and human time-experience. This tension becomes especially apparent in relation to the field of human cognition: our ability to understand and respond properly to our temporal conditions is drawn fundamentally into doubt by Qohelet. The lacking correspondence between temporal reality and human experience of time affects every temporal area in our existence. Qohelet does not allow the human being any meaningful access to either past or future because of the reality of oblivion. Unable to appeal to a meaningful human continuity, individual human beings are unable to make sense of their present existence too. In addition to analysing Qohelet’s conception of time, the thesis investigates the consequences which this time-conception has for the author’s own philosophical endeavour. Significantly, Qohelet aims to describe an area of reality which he considers fundamentally inaccessible to the human mind. This results in an ongoing tension between statements of knowledge and statements of ignorance; between wanting to investigate human life in time and being unable to do so. This dichotomy is especially apparent in Qohelet’s discussion of the lost temporal horizons of past and future. Past and future cannot be approached directly, but must either be discussed through an examination of their influence on the present or established negatively, simply by stating their inaccessibility. Qohelet’s three main narrative texts demonstrate this particularly clearly. A final chapter uses the analysis of Qohelet’s time conception to undertake a comparative analysis of Qohelet and early layers of 1 Enoch.

Abstract:
The main body of this thesis is a commentary on sections 1.19b-33 and 1.97-109 of Cicero's De Inuentione. These sections treat partes orationis in general (1.19b), then exordium (1.20-26), narratio (1.27-30), partitio (1.31-33), digressio (1.97), and conclusio (1.98-109). Due to the imposed word limit, the sections on confirmatio (1.34-77) and reprehensio (1.78-96) could not be included in the thesis. The structure of the commentary on each of these sections will be: introduction to the section, references to parallel passages in other Latin and Greek rhetorical texts, the most important general literature on the subject of the section, comparison of the passage in Cic.Inu.1 with the corresponding one in Rhet. Her, individual lemmata. The lemmata will cover various kinds of information, such as textual, grammatical, and linguistic issues, background information on persons, objects etc. mentioned, the young Cicero's position within the rhetorical tradition for a particular point (i.e. influence on and by Cic.Inu.). To the commentary proper, a number of introduction chapters have been added. Due to the word limit, only a selection of these can be included in the thesis: the title 'De Inuentione' and Cicero's intention to write on all five partes artis; the structure of Cic.Inu.; subdividing the art; rhythm and clausulae; the young Cicero's knowledge of Aristotle's works; the relationship between Cic.Inu. and Rhet.Her. Hulse, Peter. "A commentary on the Argonautica of Apollonius Rhodius, Book 4, 1–481." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2015. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/30589/.

Full text
Abstract:
Before the publication of Professor Richard Hunter’s Cambridge Classics edition in August 2015, the last large-scale commentary on Apollonius Rhodius’ Argonautica Book 4 was that of Enrico Livrea in Italian in 1973, though mention should be made of the Budé volumes edited by Vian (1974–81). During this period the literary study of the poem has undergone a virtual revolution. The present thesis is an attempt to update and advance the work of the poem’s previous editors. It is intended as a prolegomenon to a commentary on the whole Book. Apollonius’ epic is an outstanding example of Hellenistic poetic practice, embodying all of its allusive qualities. It draws on the entire tradition of previous Greek literature, while maintaining an innovative point-of-view. This commentary tries to elucidate Apollonius’ experiments with respect to all aspects of style and narration, viewing him both as an important literary critic, closely involved in maintaining the inheritance of Classical Greece, and as a creative artist intent on developing an individual voice. The section chosen for commentary exhibits many aspects of Apollonius’ artistry: passages of atmospheric description, action sequences which speed the narrative, speeches, in some of which irony predominates while in others rhetoric prevails, similes which often contain fine images and a macabre climax of chilling power which achieves its effects through a number of striking and original details. There are, therefore, many reasons why the poem as a whole was enormously influential on Latin epic, especially on Virgil’s Aeneid, and why the story and Apollonius’ methods of retelling it enjoyed such an important reception in the European tradition.

Creel, Laura E. "Arthur and Una: Mis-pairings and Delays in 'The Faerie Queene' Book 1." FIU Digital Commons, 2012. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/586.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this project centered around Spenser’s representations of the mythic Arthur. Using a New Historicist approach, I situated Arthur within a late Elizabethan religious context, a context filled with images of and discourse about Apocalypse and the return of Christ. This context makes its way into The Faerie Queene through Arthur. Seeking his bride, Gloriana, he stands for the Christ as figured by St. John’s Revelation, the Christ which will return at the end of time to unite his own Bride, the Church. This marriage—and others in the poem—is always deferred, however. This deferral of marriages reflects the failed hopes of Protestants like Spenser for immediate Apocalypse. I concluded that these failed hopes permeate Spenser’s text both through delayed marriages and through an ever-present undercurrent of expectations for consummation not in the temporal present, but rather in some unforeseeable, inaccessible future.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a commentary on the first 253 lines of book 4 of Lucan's epic poem, the Pharsalia, and is split into four parts. Part one forms the main introduction, which outlines the methodology and focus of the commentary; there the question of Lucan's 'epicness' is posed, and the plus quam motif of the poem is related to the passage under discussion. Also contained in part one are sections on the structural format of the commentary, a review of particularly important scholarship, a brief discussion of Lucan's style, and notes on the text. The remaining three parts of the thesis form the commentary proper: each section of commentary is prefaced with an introductory discussion, which outlines key events and themes in that segment of the episode, and discusses Lucan's interaction with a particular type of literature. The introduction to part two is primarily concerned with Lucan's use and/or abuse of historical sources. It compares the version of the episode at Herda provided by Lucan with that narrated by Caesar in his account of the Civil War, and suggests possibilities for differences between the two (such as Lucan's characterization of Caesar). It then briefly outlines the other extant sources which refer to the Herda conflict. and considers the question of whether Lucan was responding directly to Caesar's account, or whether there may have been an intermediary source (such as Livy). The commentary on lines 1-47 follow. The introduction to part three assesses Lucan's response to didactic and philosophical texts. It argues that an underlying dialogue with Virgil's Georgics can be found throughout the episode at Herda, and that this intertextual relationship is established in order to contrast the destructive civil war behaviour of the soldiers with the productive agricultural activity which they could be undertaking. Another section of the introduction considers the similarities between Lucan's deluge scene and those found in Ovid's Metamorphoses and Seneca's Natural Questions. It proposes that Lucan alludes to the cataclysmic imagery of these texts in order to suggest a new world order, which is then undermined when the post-deluvian world is proven to be worse than that which went before. The commentary on lines 48-143 follow. The introduction to part four argues that Lucan deliberately underpins the fraternization scene with the imagery of love, sex and marriage, and that his decision to end the scene with a mass slaughter forms part of a wider concern linking sex, marriage and death within the Pharsalia. It assesses the importance of Concordia as a goddess in social, political and philosophical terms, and concludes that her presence may imply that the kinsmen are in some way participating in a pseudo-marriage ceremony. The commentary on lines 143-253 follow. The commentary demonstrates that throughout the Herda episode Lucan engages with a wide range of texts, and that his decision to respond to genres which are not 'traditionally' epic shows him both as an inheritor of Virgil and Ovid's style of multilayered epic, and as an author pushing the boundaries of epic poetics.

Abstract:
This PhD thesis provides a commentary for the prefatory epistle and the opening twenty epigrams of Martial Book 12. The texts will be analysed through an interpretative method and focus will be placed upon intra- and intertextual references in order to orientate the work within the broader framework of Ancient literature. Beyond the concentration upon literary allusions, attention will be paid to metrical and philological concerns in order to distinguish Martial’s particular techniques and innovations from conventional or generic usages. Each text will be accompanied with a translation and an introductory essay, which will focus upon the structure, style and content of the text, in order to provide a clear and unambiguous interpretation for each work. A supplementary thematic essay will also be supplied, when it is necessary to pursue particular points that cannot be catered for in the lemmatised entries or the initial essay on the content and structure of each text.

Hogg, Graham Ian. "The self-education of Cyrus : a literary commentary on Book 1 of Xenophon's Cyropaedia." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/20573.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to provide a literary commentary and analysis of the first book of Xenophon's <I>Cyropaedia</I>. The work has traditionally been regarded as an enigma, its subject matter being too diverse and its structure and purpose unclear. Moreover, in contrast with Xenophon's other works and other fourth-century prose literature, the text has been treated as being tedious and having little intrinsic worth. In recent years, however, there has been a resurgence of scholarly interest in the <I>Cyropaedia</I>. James Tatum's <I>Xenophon's Imperial Fiction</I>, Bodil Due's <I>The Cyropaedia</I> and Deborah Gera's <I>Xenophon's</I> <I>Cyropaedia</I> have broken new ground in analysing the work as a whole and bringing it into line with the rest of Xenophon's works. What is lacking in this re-evaluation of the <I>Cyropaedia</I> is a detailed literary commentary on the work. Previous commentaries have dealt primarily with grammar, syntax and textual criticism, or have examined the work as a valuable source for Persian history and ethnography. The thesis focuses on Book 1, approaching it not in terms of one particular genre but as a complex work drawing from all the branches of Greek literature as well as from the author's own knowledge and experiences gained during the course of a very eventful life. The commentary accordingly interprets the <I>Cyropaedia </I>in the context of earlier Greek literature, to show that Xenophon uses and refers back to the works of his literary predecessors to construct a work which is innovative rather than derivative. The importance of Book 1 lies in the way Xenophon introduces the themes and ideas which will be explored in the course of the remaining seven books. Xenophon's portrayal of Cyrus the child in the first book is not only remarkably vivid, it is also a very subtle examination of the successful leader in his youth, of how he seeks to educate himself through undergoing a wide range of experiences, and of the various tactics he uses to make his elders carry out his wishes.

Abstract:
Studies of the value relevance of accounting number in capital market research are consistent with the simple view that, in equilibrium, book values are equal to or have some long-term relationship with market values, and that market returns are related to book returns. This dissertation examines the value relevance of annually-reported book values of net assets, earnings and dividends to the year-end market values of five Japanese firms between 1950 and 2004 (a period of 54 years). Econometric techniques are used to develop dynamic models of the relationship between markets, book values and a number of macro-economic variables. In constructing the models, the focus is to provide an accurate statistical description of the underlying relationships between market and book value. It is expected that such research will add to the body of knowledge on factors that are influential to Japanese stock prices. The significant findings of the study are as follows: 1) well-specified models of the data generating process for market value based on the information set used to derive the models are log-linear in form. Additive, linear models in untransformed variables are not well-specified and forecast badly out of sample; 2) the book value of net assets has relevance for market value in the five Japanese firms examined, in the long run.

The convergence between the new technologies and literature inscribes itself in the human knowledge evolution process throughout history. Full text
Abstract:
"Are the Letters of Horace Satires?" (Hendrickson 1897: 313). In response to this question, this thesis investigates whether Horace's Sermones and Epistulae 1 all belong to the genre of satura. Ancient and modern evidence from the use of the terms Sermones, Epistulae, and satura, is surveyed, and is found to be inconclusive, but not to preclude Epist. 1 as satura. The nature of specifically Horatian satura is ascertained from the text of Serm. 1, especially Serm. 1.1 and the explicitly literary Serm. 1.4 and 1.10. The redefinition of Lucilian satura, and its political implications are also considered. To confirm Epist. 1 as satura a sequential reading of the three libelli is undertaken, tracing the evolution of the theme of locus: place, both as geographical location, and as status, place in the social hierarchy, in the context of the socio-political environment of the time of composition. Serm. 1.1 as a programmatic poem is shown to establish Epicurean moderation as a prerequisite for a vita beata. In Serm. 1 Horace's status as client-poet of Maecenas and Octavian initially permits this ideal lifestyle in the Urbs. The misperceptions of outsiders lead to a preference for a life of Epicurean quietude in the rus in Serm. 2, although Horace's aequanimitas is disturbed by urban officia, and abuse of libertas dicendi associated particularly with Stoicism. The ideal of rural withdrawal is reinforced in Epist. 1 through an exploration of appropriate behaviour in relationships with potentes amici. Horace's addressees cover the entire range of the social hierarchy, and in his letters he utilizes the arguments of moral philosophy, thus reconciling poetry and philosophy. He achieves a pragmatic compromise whereby he can enjoy libertas in his role as a poet, while acknowledging that personal libertas and true aequanimitas are still to be attained.

Full text
Abstract:
Valerius Maximus situates his ninth and final book (henceforth referred as V9) in clear contrast to the rest of his output by adopting an apotreptic approach and focusing entirely on 'vitia'. This makes a break from the dispersive manner in which 'vitia' had hitherto been treated by different authors across a myriad of works, nor was V9’s structure replicated in the same manner by any other Roman author since V. Worthy of note is also how V treats his subject exclusively in a single book, creating 'intensity' as a technique 'per se' to shock the reader into making them fully aware – beyond all reasonable doubt – how pernicious and dangerous 'vitia' are. At the heart of V9 is the ubiquity of vice that transcends ethnicity. In fact V brings domestic and external 'exempla' closer, vice is inherent in life itself; the characters inhabiting both the domestic and external sections are not opposites, but are presented as culpable of the same vices (although sometimes certain 'exempla' are graded worse than others).

Abstract:
Using confidential corporate income tax return data, this paper investigates the association between book-tax non-conformity (measured as book-tax differences) and tax-loss carryforwards (TLCFs). I find that TLCFs are positively associated with temporary and permanent book-tax differences. Only firms with positive pre-tax book income and negative taxable income (double-picture firms) drive the positive association between TLCFs and temporary book-tax differences. Conversely, the positive association of TLCFs and permanent book-tax differences is present for double-picture firms and the remaining firms. The results suggest that double-picture firms, which feature high TLCFs compared to their size and to the remaining firms, use temporary book-tax differences to report a lower taxable income than pre-tax book income. Thus, this paper contributes to the understanding of the drivers of rising TLCFs. This is important, as offsetting TLCFs against future profits jeopardizes a country's tax revenue. A partir do contraste entre dois livros tradicionais e as já citadas obras, esta dissertação se propõe a entender de que forma a configuração física do livro influencia a nossa percepção da arte.<br>Delightfully tactile: production of presence and affection in book design aims to discuss the materiality of the book through graphic design by using two different ways of seeing an object: the emotional design by Donald Norman (along with the affect theory by Antonio Damasio) and the production of presence by Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht. As a meaning of understanding the connection between them and how they can apply to the study of books, I describe four books that are part of the corpus of this research: Bartleby, o escrivão, by Herman Melville, and Avenida Niévski, by Nikolai Gógol, both published by Cosac Naify; Composition No. 1, by Marc Saporta and Tree of codes, by Jonathan Safran Foer, published by Visual Editions. These two publishers are part of a segment of the publishing design that as I argument works to reclaim the presence as a reference to the human being through the creation of graphic projects which try to affect the reader by using the tactile materiality. From the contrast between two traditionally designed books and the previously mentioned works, this dissertation tries to extract a comprehension of how the physical configurations of a book can change our perception of art.

Abstract:
<p> The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the allusions to Gen 11:1-9 in the book of Daniel, and to demonstrate on exegetical and intertextual grounds the references and allusions to Gen 11:1-9 in the book of Daniel and the theological implications of those connections. After reviewing the different kinds of intertextuality and the methodology used by Old Testament scholars in the area of literary allusions (chap. 1), this dissertation investigates the allusions to Gen 11 in both the historical (chap. 2) and the visionary sections (chap. 3) of the book of Daniel. All the allusions to Gen 11 in the book of Daniel are discussed and given an assessment of either "certain allusions," "possible allusions," "uncertain allusions," and "nonallusions." </p><p> Furthermore, this study outlines the contribution of the allusions to Gen 11 to the theology of the book of Daniel (chap. 4) and specifically relates the Babel motif to the themes of the kingdom of God, judgment and the Israelite worship institution, the Temple. </p><p> Finally, a summary and conclusions (chap. 5) gather and present the various findings and insights gained from this research. Based on the evidence submitted in this dissertation it is concluded that the allusions to Gen 11 play a dominant role in the whole book of Daniel. It is further shown that the allusions to Gen 11 make a prominent contribution to the main theological themes in Daniel and cannot be ignored by the careful exegete.</p>

Abstract:
South African common law represents a European ius commune based upon Roman law and Roman-Dutch law of the seventeenth century. Included within South African common law is a large volume of medieval commentaries on Roman law, rarely touched upon by legal historians. The number of South African legal practitioners with a working knowledge of Latin has rapidly declined since the abolition of Latin as a compulsory subject for the LL.B degree in 1996. This state of affairs has led to the marginalisation of untranslated common law sources, as fewer legal practitioners are able to read and understand Latin. Although many Roman legal sources have already been translated into modem Romance languages, medieval commentaries on Roman law are still largely untranslated and therefore of little value to most legal practitioners. The idiosyncrasies and peculiar language of medieval legal Latin has further contributed to the untranslatability thereof, and even jurists with a working knowledge of classical Latin find it difficult to translate. This study aims to provide access through translation and historical annotation to an important untranslated medieval legal text, the Tractatus de jluminibus seu Tyberiadis by the medieval Italian jurist, Bartolus of Saxoferrato (1313 - 1357). The text is concerned with alluvion, an original mode of acquisition of ownership, which is still relevant in contemporary South African law and has recently been perpetuated in section 33 of the Land Survey Act 8 of 1997.<br>Thesis (M.A.)--Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 2000

Full text
Abstract:
Parents are encouraged to read with their children from an early age because shared book reading helps children to develop their language and early literacy skills. A pragmatic Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) research design was adopted to investigate the influence of two forms of a shared reading intervention (Dialogic Reading and Dialogic Reading with the addition of Print Referencing) on children’s language and literacy skills. Dialogic reading is a validated shared reading intervention that has been shown to improve children’s oral language skills prior to formal schooling (Whitehurst & Lonigan, 1998). Print referencing is another form of shared reading intervention that has the potential to have effects on children’s print knowledge as they begin school (Justice & Ezell, 2002). However, training parents to use print referencing strategies at home has not been researched extensively although research findings indicate its effectiveness when used by teachers in the early years of school. Eighty parents of Preparatory year children from three Catholic schools in low income areas in the outer suburbs of a metropolitan city were trained to deliver specific shared reading strategies in an eight-week home intervention. Parents read eight books to their children across the period of the intervention. Each book was requested to be read at least three times a week. There were 42 boys and 38 girls ranging in age from 4.92 years to 6.25 years (M=5.53, SD=0.33) in the sample. The families were randomly assigned to three groups: Dialogic Reading (DR); Dialogic Reading with the addition of Print Referencing (DR + PR); and a Control group. Six measures were used to assess children’s language skills at pre and post, and follow-up (three months after the intervention). These measures assessed oral language (receptive and expressive vocabulary), phonological awareness skills (rhyme, word completion), alphabet knowledge, and concepts about print. Results of the intervention showed that there were significant differences from pre to post between the two intervention groups and the control group on three measures: expressive vocabulary, rhyme, and concepts about print. The shared reading strategies delivered by parents of the dialogic reading, and dialogic reading with the addition of print referencing, showed promising results to develop children’s oral language skills in terms of expressive vocabulary and rhyme, as well as understanding of the concepts about print. At follow-up, when the children entered Year 1, the two intervention groups (DR and DR + PR) group had significantly maintained their knowledge of concepts about prints when compared with the control group. Overall, the findings from this intervention study did not show that dialogic reading with the addition of print referencing had stronger effects on children’s early literacy skills than dialogic reading alone. The research also explored if pre-existing family factors impacted on the outcomes of the intervention from pre to post. The relationships between maternal education and home reading practices prior to intervention and child outcomes at post were considered. However, there were no significant effects of maternal education and home literacy activities on child outcomes at post. Additionally, there were no significant effects for the level of compliance of parents with the intervention program in terms of regular weekly reading to children during the intervention period on child outcomes at post. These non-significant findings are attributed to the lack of variability in the recruited sample. Parents participating in the intervention had high levels of education, although they were recruited from schools in low socio-economic areas; parents were already highly engaged in home literacy activities at recruitment; and the parents were highly compliant in reading regularly to their child during the intervention. Findings of the current study did show that training in shared reading strategies enhanced children’s early language and literacy skills. Both dialogic reading and dialogic reading with the addition of print referencing improved children’s expressive vocabulary, rhyme, and concepts about print at post intervention. Further research is needed to identify how, and if, print referencing strategies used by parents at home can be effective over and above the use of dialogic reading strategies. In this research, limitations of sample size and the nature of the intervention to use print referencing strategies at home may have restricted the opportunities for this research study to find more effects on children’s emergent literacy skills or for the effectiveness of combining dialogic reading with print referencing strategies. However, these results did indicate that there was value in teaching parents to implement shared reading strategies at home in order to improve early literacy skills as children begin formal schooling.

Estes foram relacionados entre si sob três diferentes níveis: o primeiro abrangendo a colação das variantes textuais, o segundo envolvendo a análise, e o terceiro enfocando a possível família textual da Torá do Museu Nacional.<br>The investigation is concerned to the textual criticism at Genesis book, transcript across the IX scroll rolls from the Museu Nacional collection, in Rio de Janeiro, named Pergaminhos Ivriim. So that, some questions were posed, as the criteria used to find out the textual variants, the reasons to appoint the textual family and the period of its transcription. The conclusions were obtained by textual confrontation between the Genesis writing fragments according diferents periods of Hebrew text: ancient massoretic, late medieval and contemporary. These ones were closely connected each other under three stages of investigation: The first step related to the collation. The second step concerned to the analysis of the readings. The third step affected the textual family.

Lovell, Nathan Hains. "The Book of Kings and Exilic Identity: 1 and 2 Kings as a Work of Political Historiography." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/20228.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes that 1 and 2 Kings might be read as a work of written history, produced with the explicit purpose of shaping the communal identity of its first readers in the Babylonian exile. For those readers, much of what it had meant to be Israel had been lost in the events of 587 BCE, including the temple, the land promised to the ancestors, and the Davidic king. By drawing on sociological approaches to the role historiography plays in the construction of political identity, I propose the book of Kings is intended to reconstruct a sense of Israelite identity in the context of these losses. I argue that the book of Kings moves beyond providing a reason for the exile in Israel’s history, and beyond even connecting its exilic audience to that history. The book recalls the past in order to demonstrate what it means to be Israel in the (exilic) present, and to encourage hope for the Israelite nation in the future. After developing a reading strategy for 1–2 Kings that treats the book as a coherent narrative, I examine the construction of Israelite identity within Kings under the headings of covenant, nationhood, land, and rule. In each case I argue that the narrative of the book creates room for a genuine but temporary expression of Israelite identity in exile: genuine to show that it remains possible for Israel to be Yahweh’s people during the exile, but temporary to encourage hope for a future restoration.

According to Walter Benjamin, with the mechanical reproduction, work of art has came near to the human being, loosing its aura - the sacred uniqueness of the objects that distinguish themselves in pre-industrial society. In this sense, we come back on time line, starting on the pre-eminence of the writing on the occidental culture as a fundamental fact to the process of book´s auratização, with the objective of reflect about the possible reasons of the survival of its prestige as a media and as a cultural product in the beginning of the 21st century, that is, in a period characterized by a communicational revolution generated on the advances of electronic and digital media.

Abstract:
A partir da localização destas publicações, busquei compreender o porquê deste livro do século XVI assumir um valor emblemático pelos seus diferentes tradutores e, nesse sentido, identificar como cada um atribuiu novas significações ao livro e quais são estas.<br>Published in Germany in 1557, the book of Hans Staden about his travels to Portuguese America acquired wide circulation in Europe, with several translations. The report also will have other translations into Portuguese, and (re) meaning in different times and circumstances: Albert Lofgren (IHGSP member) in 1900 and the writer Monteiro Lobato in 1925, 1927 and 1945. Each of these agents translated the book Staden in order to reach different audiences and say, through the report, his idea of history of Brazil and nation that was intended to form. Monteiro Lobato published more than once that material, giving him a lobatiana translation or a literary arrangement, adapting it also for children, using his famous characters of the Sitio do Pica Pau Amarelo (literally translated as Yellow Woodpecker Ranch) as Dona Benta and Narizinho. From the location of these publications, I tried to understand why this book of the sixteenth century take on a symbolic value for their different translators and, accordingly, identify how each assigned new meanings to the book and what are these.

Abstract:
The technological revolution experienced by contemporary society and the advancement of media tools point to the need to integrate education in this context , aligning their actions with these materials. Therefore, it is necessary for teachers to appropriate technological knowledge and to use these tools in their educational practices. In this context, it is the teaching of Portuguese Language, whose main topics are the reading and textual production. In this perspective , this work presents a proposal of textual multimodal production with the use of Augmented Reality technology aiming to motivate the reading activities and text production as well to improve this educational process. To development this work was used the methodology of action research and qualitative analysis, using a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews as data collection instrument. It was considered that the use of technology to support the classroom textual production enabled new strategies for this activity, which motivated and encouraged the participation of students in school activities. This research indicated that the use of AR enhances the production of multimodal texts, because this technology allows the inclusion of images, 3D objects and audio in the texts produced by the students and was considered as an important tool of motivation to reading and writing. The results analyzed in this dissertation indicate that the students showed a expressive learning in the textual productions through AR technology. Finally, it is emphasized that the use of this technology in activities of multimodal texts production constitutes an important approach that can be used by teachers who want to insert the technology into their practices of textual production.<br>A revolução tecnológica vivenciada pela sociedade contemporânea e o avanço de ferramentas midiáticas evidenciam a necessidade de que a educação também se insira nesse contexto e subsidie suas ações com o auxílio desses materiais.

Abstract:
This thesis is about the concept of imagination in Book I of David Hume s Treatise of Human Nature. A full understanding of this concept is of fundamental importance to the analysis of the mind model contained in Hume´s theory of human understanding, due to the central role there played by that faculty. While restricting ourselves to that text, we discuss the several senses of the term imagination, by analysing the different functions of that faculty, and by comparing it with other faculties of the mind, such as memory and reason.

Abstract:
Considering that social, professional and academic practices demand knowledge of images and ability to produce them, it is important to understand how the study of images can become an integral part of language study. Authors such as Kress and van Leeuwen (2000) and Unsworth (2004) argue for the need for visual literacy as visual communication has become more prominent in EFL course books. One of the most evident visual elements is the photograph. Photographs are versatile images that can be used in legal data, in historic, medical and scientific documentation, as well as in EFL course books. This dissertation investigates the functions of photographs in the activities suggested in an EFL course book, the negotiation of meanings in photographs, and the social relations between the producer of the image and the observer. This research uses a qualitative analysis of images following Kress and van Leeuwen`s (2000) The Grammar of Visual Design, which is based on the theory of Systemic Functional Grammar by Halliday (1994, 2000). The analysis of the course book shows that photographs illustrate arguments, bridge the students` and the teacher`s world with the real world outside the classroom, and bring meanings into the course book. It also points out the importance of conducting more research on multimodality in EFL course books and developing new methodologies for visual analysis.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the potential futures of the scholarly monograph in an increasingly digital environment. By positioning the medium of the book as a major site of struggle over the future of scholarly knowledge production within the humanities, this thesis argues for the importance of experimenting with alternative ways of thinking and performing the academic monograph. In particular, it argues for the importance of experiments that go beyond simply iteratively reproducing established print practices of knowledge production, dissemination and consumption. This is especially important when the present print-based arrangements tend to sustain the interest of established stakeholders, inhibiting wider access to scholarly research and experimentation with new forms of scholarship and scholarly communication. This thesis will examine some of the forms a politics of the book based on openness, remix and liquidity might take. It will draw on some recent experiments in scholarly book publishing—from liquid and living books to anonymous authorship and radical open access—that try to challenge and rethink the book as a fixed and stable commercial object, as well as the political economy and scholarly practices surrounding it. These experiments do so by cutting the book together and apart differently and by exploring experimentation as a specific discourse and practice of critique.
